Ward leads NSW talent in piling on runs against Blues

The hosts struck with the first ball of the day at the SCG but it was harder going after that

AAP24-Nov-2024Adopted Tasmanian Tim Ward has his side into a promising position on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales, as three Blues juniors impressed against their old state. In his second game back in Tasmania’s team after being dropped last summer, Ward hit 91 at the SCG on Sunday, before falling late in the day when caught down the leg side. His runs came as Nivethan Radhakrishnan and Jordan Silk also hit half-centuries, giving Tasmania a chance to finally lay the foundation for their first Shield victory of the summer.Ward, Radhakrishnan and Silk never played a senior match for NSW in their career, but all were raised in Sydney and came through the Blues’ system before moving south. On Sunday, each had success on their return home, with Ward’s runs particularly timely. The 26-year-old was the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year in 2022, and part of the Australia A team in 2023 after a strong start to domestic cricket. But he fell out of form last summer, and found himself dropped late in the season after three consecutive ducks.Ward again began this season on the outer, before hitting 51 on return for Tasmania against Queensland in the last round. The No. 3 continued that form into Sunday, after Jackson Bird had Jake Weatherald edging to gully from a poor shot on the first ball of the match.Ward drove Sean Abbott for four early in the day, and later jumped down the deck to hit Adam Zampa for six over midwicket. But for the most part it was an innings of steady accumulation, before his 246-ball vigil was ended when he was caught behind off Abbott.Radhakrishnan’s runs also came after being recalled to the struggling Tasmania side. Playing in just his second first-class match, the 21-year-old who rose to prominence as an ambidextrous spinner, impressed with the bat for Tasmania in his 55.He cover-drove Jack Edwards for one four and hit him behind point for another in the same over, before using his feet to hit Green to the long-on rope. But he was out to the spinner four balls later, when trapped on the pads to one that went straight on.Silk then walked to the wicket and hit 74, before he too was caught behind off Abbott inside the last 20 overs of the day.Abbott finished the day with 2 for 55, after earlier having Radhakrishnan dropped twice in the slips and once by wicketkeeper Josh Philippe in the first session.

Liverpool player ratings vs Arsenal: Who needs Trent Alexander-Arnold? Dominik Szoboszlai's stunning free-kick secures huge Reds win over title rivals

The makeshift right-back sent Arne Slot's side top of the Premier League with a sensational strike that lit up an otherwise dull game at Anfield

Who needs Trent Alexander-Arnold?! Certainly not Liverpool! Dominik Szoboszlai once again did an outstanding job filling in at right-back in Sunday's Premier League meeting with Arsenal at Anfield – before then deciding the game in the home side's favour with the kind of fantastic free-kick that Trent made his trademark.

It was a moment of outrageous quality completely at odds with the dross that preceded it, as the top two teams from last season seemed reluctant to take too many risks at this early stage of the season.

The champions won't care, though, as they once again managed to win a game in which they hadn't played particularly well to go top of the table, three points clear of their main title rivals.

GOAL rates all of the Liverpool players on show as the Reds ended a run of six Premier League games without a win against Arsenal with a hard-fought 1-0 victory…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

Alisson Becker (6/10):

Made one decent stop from Madueke during the first half but, truth be told, he didn't actually have much to do.

Dominik Szoboszlai (8/10):

Once again deployed in defence due to Liverpool's issues at right-back and once again put in an excellent shift for his side before winning the game with a sensational strike from 32 yards out.

Ibrahima Konate (7/10):

After two shocking displays, against Bournemouth and Newcastle, the Frenchman looked back to something resembling his best. Such a shame, then, to see him forced off through injury.

Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Another typically dominant display at the back and, on days like this, it's the Dutchman's anticipation that really stands out. The one gripe was that he didn't shoot after pouncing on a poor pass from Raya.

Milos Kerkez (7/10):

Much more like it from the Hungarian. He struggled in his first two Premier League appearances for Liverpool but he stood up very well indeed to the threat posed by the lively Madueke down Arsenal's right-hand side.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Ryan Gravenberch (7/10):

The Dutchman's propensity for picking up bookings remains a concern, but he's such a calming and influential presence in the middle of the park. Helped Liverpool gain control of the game after the interval.

Alexis Mac Allister (6/10):

Recalled to the starting line-up after missing the game against Newcastle, and although he created a couple of chances, the Argentine is clearly still not 100 percent match fit after a stop-start couple of months.

Florian Wirtz (6/10):

We're still waiting to see the real Wirtz, but this was a bit better from the Germany international, who picked out Salah with a couple of nice passes (both of which were wasted), while he also had one of Liverpool's few shots on target. Ran himself into the ground, too, before hobbling off late on.

AFPAttack

Mohamed Salah (4/10):

Struggled to get any change out of Calafiori all afternoon and failed miserably to take advantage on the few times he found himself in a dangerous position. A really poor performance from a player who hasn't quite got going this season.

Hugo Ekitike (5/10):

Ekitike had scored in his first three competitive games for Liverpool but he never even went close to maintaining his 100 percent strike rate. The Frenchman was forced to feed off scraps for the entirety of his 79 minutes on the field.

Cody Gakpo (5/10):

Looked like a threat when he got on the ball, but the Netherlands international offered no real penetration.

Getty Images SportSubs & Manager

Curtis Jones (6/10):

Came on for Mac Allister on the hour mark and added a bit of intensity to Liverpool's pressing.

Joe Gomez (7/10):

Took over in the centre of defence for the injured Konate for the final 12 minutes and did well to putt off Eze without fouling the new signing before making a brilliant interception to deny Gyokeres.

Federico Chiesa (N/A):

Replaced Ekitike up top in the closing stages and pressed well.

Wataru Endo (N/A):

Brought on in the dying minutes to help Liverpool close out the game.

Arne Slot (6/10):

The decision to stick with Szoboszlai paid off spectacularly, but the former Feyenoord coach will probably be most satisified with the fact that his side looked solid for the first time this season. Still, victory won't mask the fact that his team still hasn't quite clicked yet.

Wolves eye swoop for Lewis O’Brien

Wolverhampton Wanderers have cast their sights towards Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien, with the Old Gold interested in signing a midfielder in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Wolves are among a sextuple of clubs who are interested in signing the 23-year-old.

The mentioned sides who are vying for his signature are Wolves, Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Southampton.

It is said that the Englishman’s fate could be settled as early as next week as it is believed that the Terriers’ midfield man has a release clause in his contract to the tune of around £12m.

As per the report, there is a slim chance that O’Brien could stay, with Huddersfield Town involved in the play-offs, so if they were to earn promotion to the Premier League, the 23-year-old would not have too much to gain.

Ready for the Premier League

It is no secret as to why so many top-flight outfits are sniffing around O’Brien ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

The 23-year-old, who has been described as “terrific” by writer George Smith, has been a vital part of the Terriers’ Championship campaign, having played 93% of Huddersfield’s games this season, and still has a part to play in helping them to achieve their ambition of promotion to the top flight.

The Englishman has “ran the show” according to Smith and has drummed up metrics that would see him slot right into Lage’s Wolves side.

Having created 44 chances in the Championship this season, he would rank first in Wolves’ squad, jumping ahead of Daniel Podence who has created 35 openings in the Premier League this term.

With six goal contributions in the form of three goals and three assists, he has bettered that of Joao Moutinho, who has been mooted to leave Molineux this summer.

Defensively he is sound also, and his average of 1.3 successful tackles per 90 would see him rank fourth among the Old Gold squad for this metric.

Overall, his £12m release clause represents somewhat of a bargain for a player of his calibre who is clearly ready for the Premier League.

Wolves would be right to move for O’Brien, who could offer Lage’s side a much-needed burst of creativity and defensive stability in midfield.

England build foundation through fifties from Burns, Denly and Stokes

Joe Denly top-scored with 74 but England were lacking a defining contribution on a sedate day at Mount Maunganui

The Report by Alan Gardner20-Nov-2019England’s Test team came to New Zealand seeking a fresh start after the angst and drama of the Bayliss era. There are few more tranquil locales in which the longest format can unfold and, on a sedate opening to life as a Test venue at Mount Maunganui, a succession of English batsmen gave notice that they were prepared to adhere to the traditional disciplines favoured by the new head coach, Chris Silverwood. While England’s innings was perhaps lacking in definitive statements, there were encouraging signs aplenty from a revamped top order. In keeping with the team’s new mantra, Rory Burns and Joe Denly both compiled watchful half-centuries, from 135 and 136 balls respectively, while Dom Sibley, the debutant opener, was party to a 52-run opening stand as England made a useful start in benign conditions. That none was able to go on will give New Zealand satisfaction after a day of manful toil from their four seamers. Pre-match suggestions were that this pitch would be accommodating to batsmen and it looks as the Bay of Plenty will live up to its name; Kane Williamson is foremost among the home XI unlikely to miss out given similar opportunity.Watch cricket on ESPN+

And while the English rank and file did their level best, there was disappointment for the captain, Joe Root, who was only able to muster 2 from a laboured 22-ball stay. A typically punchy fifty from his deputy, Ben Stokes, ensured England would retain hope of building a match-defining position on day two.Recent white-ball encounters between these two sides have been marked by their explosive potential, but Test rhythms quickly asserted themselves at the Bay Oval. Colin de Grandhomme’s medium pace applied an effective tourniquet as England were kept to a scoring rate well below three an over, and only while Stokes was at the crease and flexing his tattooed biceps during the evening session did pulses go much above resting rate.Having lost two wickets in quick succession shortly before tea, Stokes and Denly took some time to retrench before swelling their fourth-wicket stand to 83. Denly reached his fourth fifty in as many Tests with a crisp cover drive off Trent Boult, then began to open up as he attacked the under-utilised spin of Mitchell Santner, lofting over extra cover and then depositing a straight-driven six down the ground. His previous Test innings, opening the batting at The Oval in September, saw Denly fall six runs short of a maiden hundred; he did not get that close this time, but may again rue a chance missed after falling to the second new ball for 74, fencing at Tim Southee as he angled a delivery in from wide of the crease. While New Zealand were admirably persistent, their bowlers’ efforts were undermined by several notable lapses in the field – the most glaring of which came a few overs before the close, as Stokes was gifted a life having thrashed Boult for fours down the ground, through midwicket and then cover. The next delivery found his outside edge, only to burst through Ross Taylor’s hands at slip and disappear for a fourth consecutive boundary.New Zealand might also have removed Burns before he had established himself, failing to review for caught behind after a half-hearted appeal in the fifth over. Burns put that behind him to help see off the new ball and take England to a promising position at 113 for 1, despite rarely looking fluent. However, Root was unable to take advantage of coming in with the shine long gone, taking 21 balls to get off the mark and then falling tamely to Neil Wagner’s next delivery, steering an edge to second slip.Wagner pounded the pitch manfully, engaging in an entertaining tussle with Denly and striking Burns a blow on the helmet that seemed to contribute to the opener losing his composure. Twice Denly pulled Wagner for two fours in an over, but in between times the bowler had the better of things, seeing edges fall short of gully and slip.Burns also edged Southee between first and second slip on 37, with Taylor and Tom Latham unmoving, and then survived a marginal lbw appeal on umpire’s call when New Zealand did turn to the DRS. He went to his fifty in Boult’s following over, clipping off his legs for a sixth boundary, before finally succumbing to de Grandhomme via a thin edge to the keeper. It was also de Grandhomme who made New Zealand’s initial breakthrough, a teasing away-nibbler finding Sibley’s outside edge after the new man had compiled 22 from 63 balls in his maiden outing. If it was a regulation dismissal for an opener, drawn into an off-stump push and well held by Taylor at first slip, Sibley had at least made New Zealand work hard for it, leaving the ball well and giving England an ideal start after Root had won the toss and chosen to bat.Having come into the game with a reputation for obduracy, Sibley promptly clipped his first ball in Test cricket to the midwicket boundary; but he was soon living up to his billing, absorbing another 22 deliveries before producing his second scoring shot. The Burns-Sibley axis soon settled into an unhurried groove, in keeping with the relaxed atmosphere on the grass banks for those fans attending Bay Oval’s Test debut. Both captains took the view that the pitch would be good for run-scoring, despite a greenish tinge, and that was borne out. Burns had an escape on 10, HotSpot confirming a thin outside edge to a regulation Boult outswinger, while Sibley was forced to dive for his ground to complete a quick single but otherwise the openers were untroubled, as New Zealand found some gentle swing but little pace from a docile surface.

Villa fans will love what Jurgen Klopp has said

Steven Gerrard’s time at Aston Villa has been a puzzling period so far.

The England great arrived in the Midlands with a healthy reputation following his career in Scotland and after the first few weeks, you could see why there was such a buzz about his management skills.

However, sadly the Villans have slipped by the wayside and to coin an old phrase, they’ve been on the beach in the final few months of the season.

Villa may well find it difficult now to finish in the Premier League’s top 10 after a run of form that’s been rather topsy-turvy, but back to back wins prior to their defeat at Liverpool showed there is still quality in the squad.

Philippe Coutinho looks set to sign for the club permanently but it wasn’t the former Red that Klopp waxed lyrical over at full time.

As the Merseysiders came away with a 2-1 victory at Villa Park, Klopp sunk his teeth into the display of the host’s forward line.

He said in his post-match press conference: “There were one or two moments where we had to defend with the centre-halves in the six-yard box because of the quality of Villa. Ingsy unbelievable, Watkins and these kind of things that’s tricky, but we did it.”

It’s hardly a surprise that Klopp was so effusive in his praise of Ings considering the pair worked together when he played at Anfield but it’s a promising sign for the Villa Park faithful.

There may only be two games of the campaign left but if the former Southampton man really is looking “unbelievable” now, it should delight the supporters at Villa.

After all, this is a player who Dean Smith paid £25m for last summer following the sale of Jack Grealish.

To suggest he’s been good business so far would be lying. The 29-year-old has been rather inconsistent since signing, scoring just seven goals for Villa.

That means that at the moment he’s cost the club a whopping £3.5m per goal.

If Villa are to make this move a worthwhile investment then they’ll need Ings at the top of his game heading into next term – a position Klopp clearly believes he’s getting to again.

The German is no stranger to praising opposition players, with the Anfield chief hailing the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Adama Traore and Gabriel Martinelli relentlessly in the past.

Klopp knows an exciting talent when he sees one, so those at Villa should be extremely excited about what the future holds for the forward under Gerrard’s tutelage beyond the current campaign.

A summer of rest and recuperation should do the England international the world of good, and then hopefully we’ll see the very best from the “unbelievable” Ings next season.

Fermin Lopez wants Barcelona stay as Chelsea told they must pay €90m for Spanish champions to consider selling midfielder

Fermin Lopez reportedly wants to stay at Barcelona as the Blaugrana demand €90 million (£78m/$105m) from Chelsea to consider selling the midfielder. The Blues launched a €50m (£43m/$58m) opening bid only to be met with outright resistance from the Catalan giants. The 22-year-old midfielder remains firmly committed to continuing at Camp Nou, even as the Premier League side dangles eye-watering financial incentives in front of him.

According to Barcelona are adamant that Lopez is not on the market. What was initially talk of listening to offers starting at €70m (£61m/$82m) has now been upgraded to a firm demand of €90m minimum. The message is crystal clear: only a 'crazy' bid will make them budge. Sporting director Deco and coach Hansi Flick have both made their position known; Fermin is central to the project and will not be sacrificed.

Chelsea, though, are not taking no for an answer. Having lifted both the Conference League and the Club World Cup last season, they see Lopez as the jewel needed to continue their rebuild. The west London club reportedly gave the midfielder a 48-hour ultimatum to respond to their contract proposal, an offer that far exceeded his current wages at Barcelona. Yet the deadline passed without movement, leaving the Blues frustrated but not deterred. Inside Stamford Bridge, Lopez remains a priority target, even as they continue stockpiling other attacking recruits.

Lopez insists he wants to stay in Catalunya, where he finally broke into the first team and became a decisive figure last season. He has long been linked with a move to England but would rather not join a Premier League side right now.

Man United transfer news on Osimhen

Victor Osimhen is ‘definitely’ on the ‘radar’ of Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The Nigerian striker joined Napoli in a £67.5m move from Lille in September 2020, and his £112,000-per-week contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona still has more than three years to run.

He has scored 27 goals in his 60 appearances for Napoli to date, including 17 in 30 games this season. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Azzurri will demand at least €100m (£85.6m) to let him leave in the summer.

United are gearing up for Erik ten Hag’s first transfer window in Manchester after he was announced as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent successor as manager. However, the Red Devils appear to have lost out in the race for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, who now looks set to join local rivals Manchester City.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Jones has said that Osimhen is an option for United as a centre-forward target in the upcoming transfer window. The player appears to boast the desired profile for Ten Hag, but his price tag could apparently be an issue.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “He’s a really good player, and definitely somebody that’s on United’s radar for the summer.

“He is extremely expensive. That is a big drawback in terms of pursuing it. He does fit what they’re going to be looking for, though.”

The verdict

You can understand why Ten Hag would want to add a new number nine at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 24 goals this season but he is now 37 years of age, and he could leave at the end of 2022/23 when his contract expires. Meanwhile, fellow veteran Edinson Cavani is poised to leave in a matter of weeks as his deal winds down.

Marcus Rashford is capable of operating as a centre-forward, but he has endured a difficult campaign, scoring only five goals.

Osimhen may come with an eye-watering price tag, but he is only 23 and looks like an elite striker in the making.

The Serie A player of the month for March is a ‘thoroughbred bomber’ who can become ‘world-class’, in the opinion of his manager Luciano Spalletti, and he definitely appears to be a viable alternative to Haaland for United in the transfer market.

Never thought I'd play against Karnataka – Puducherry man Vinay Kumar

The former Karnataka bowler was a mainstay in his former team for nearly a decade before making a switch to Puducherry ahead of the current season

Saurabh Somani in Bengaluru19-Oct-2019″We have a very good team and definitely Karnataka is a very strong side.”It’s odd to hear those words from R Vinay Kumar, talking of his team playing Karnataka. It’s odder still when you realise he’s going to occupy the ‘away’ dressing room at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The anomaly is complete with J Arunkumar standing beside Vinay, as the ‘away’ coach against Karnataka at the Chinnaswamy. Before the current domestic season began, Puducherry pulled off a coup of sorts by not only hiring Arunkumar as coach, but also roping in Vinay as one of their three professional players. They wouldn’t have known then, that the combination that took Karnataka to an unprecedented double-treble – of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup – from 2013 to 2015, would end up facing their former team at the first available opportunity in the 2019-20 domestic season.Puducherry steamrolled their opposition in the Plate Group, earning a quarter-final spot against the Group A and B toppers, which turned out to be Karnataka. And now, the two men who were front and centre of Karnataka’s two most glorious years, will be plotting their downfall.”I never thought I was going to play against Karnataka,” Vinay said on the eve of their quarter-final. “But it’s cricket. We just need to play to win. I’m looking at it as one more game. Definitely there will be a lot of emotion involved, but when it comes to business, it’s business. I never thought that I would be playing so soon against them in an important game. It’s a bit similar to how in the IPL and KPL, my close friends could be in the opposite teams but we needed to win that game.”Karnataka are the heavyweights and the favourites, but in Puducherry, they have an opponent with tools uniquely fitted to cause a flutter of worry. Vinay has performed better at the Chinnaswamy than he has overall, and both he and Arunkumar know not just the ground, but the opponents, inside out. Vinay’s first-class bowling average at the Chinnaswamy is 21.46, against a career figure of 23.53. In List A matches, he averages 18.60 at an economy rate of 5.14. Those figures would read even better without the only ODI he’s played there, where he conceded 102 runs in nine overs for one wicket. His overall List A average and economy rate are 24.19 and 4.81. The last time Vinay played at the Chinnaswamy, he almost took Karnataka to victory over Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 semi-final, having put in his most inspired bowling performance of an otherwise sub-par bowling season, only for Cheteshwar Pujara to get a lucky break in their fourth-innings chase.”It’s a bit of an advantage because you know these players really well,” Arunkumar said. “(Devdutt) Padikkal even played for my team in the KPL. But the execution is very important. Usually, if you plan too much it doesn’t work.””I know about their weakness and they know about mine,” Vinay said, while Arunkumar joked about whether Vinay actually had any weaknesses.S Aravind, who is now the Karnataka bowling coach but bowled alongside Vinay for several years and worked under Arunkumar, said it was bittersweet facing old friends. “We have to look at them as opposition now. There’ll be a healthy competition,” Aravind smiled. “As friends, we are in touch, but during the game, we are in different units.”One of the aces up Karnataka’s sleeve is captain Manish Pandey. He has been in sublime touch through the tournament, and has looked like he belongs to a level above the one he’s currently competing in every time he has stepped out to bat. And both Vinay and Arunkumar know that they will need to neutralise Pandey.”He’s performed in every game. I’ve been watching his scores and he’s doing superbly,” Vinay said. “Being a captain and performing like that shows his calibre, and you can see the difference in the team – they’ve ended up top of the group.”Arunkumar focussed on the fact that it was a one-ball game for batsmen. “In the end, it just takes one ball, one mistake, or one brilliant catch,” he said. “Throughout all our league games, we’ve got all teams all out within 40 overs [Puducherry bowled their opponents out in all seven games they had a full bowling innings in, but three of the teams lasted beyond 40 overs]. It shows how commendable our bowling unit is. Our medium pace department is fantastic, and I think we have some of the best spinners in the country.”He (Pandey) is playing his natural game as captain, (but) there will be a bit of pressure now since it’s a quarter-final. Like I said, it’s just a matter of one ball.”Vinay will have potentially 60 of them with his new team, to overturn the fortunes of his old one.

Dani Ceballos' 'last dance?' Real Madrid star hints at summer exit after La Liga win against Real Oviedo

Dani Ceballos has hinted at his potential exit from Real Madrid in this ongoing summer window.

Ceballos hints at exit this summerMidfielder was previously eager to staySpaniard has offers from Champions League teamsFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After appearing in a cameo against Oviedo in Real's latest La Liga fixture, Ceballos posted a story on Instagram with the caption "Last dance" and a thank-you emoji. This suggests a potential shift in base for the 29-year-old, who has offers from Champions League outfits.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

With Xabi Alonso taking charge at Madrid, Ceballos seems to have fallen in the pecking order. He is the sixth midfielder on the list, alongside injured players like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga. The manager has preferred Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, along with Arda Guler, whom he has converted into a central role. This suggests it will be tough for Ceballos to get a place in the starting lineup. In the 3-0 win against Oviedo, he was subbed on to the pitch in the 86th minute, and against Osasuna, he joined the action in the 90th minute.

TELL ME MORE

Ceballos, despite having offers, wanted to stay at Real and fight for his place. He was aware that if he could convince Alonso for a place in the lineup, it would be smoother for him to convince Luis de la Fuente to offer him a place in the upcoming World Cup. However, as things stand, unless Ceballos moves to a different club and gets sufficient minutes, his dreams of featuring in the 2026 World Cup will remain in jeopardy. Madrid are not reluctant to keep him and will be open to offers between €15-20 million (£13m/$18m to £17m/$23m).

Ceballos' future has to be decided in the next few days as the window closes on August 31. He was previously linked to Betis, but there is no concrete development on it.
