Bruno Fernandes' season in numbers

The Portuguese has been a wonderful servant to this great football club. During his time in Manchester to date, Fernandes has scored an impressive 79 goals and supplied 70 assists. He has been a marvel in the red shirt.

Sadly, this season his performance levels have dropped. The 30-year-old is yet to find the net and has only registered three assists in all competitions, only one of which has come in the Premier League.

To make matters worse, he was given a red card in the dismal 3-0 defeat to Spurs on Sunday, slipping and catching James Maddison with his studs. It was a harsh sending off but it ultimately summed up his lack of influence so far this term.

In the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend he gave the ball away a staggering 34 times and failed to hit a single shot on target. It didn’t get much better in their Europa League clash with FC Twente either where the Portugal international created just one goal-scoring chance, lost possession 19 times and completed just 75% of his passes.

Sunday’s awful display, meanwhile, saw a pass completion rate of just 74% while he didn’t win a single duel either.

It might not be the worst idea for him to sit out the next few games, then. He will be suspended for three matches which gives the likes of Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen a chance to prove themselves.

They could also look at bringing in some more young players like Toby Collyer and Dan Gore. However, they are not of a similar ilk. Isak Hansen-Aaroen is, however, but he’s already left the club.

Why is this a loss? Well, Hansen-Aaroen would be a pretty handy replacement for Fernandes in the here and now. He wouldn’t do any worse than the current crop, that’s for sure.

After all, his playmaking abilities have already been compared to a fellow countryman and one of the finest in the Premier League.

A former teammate of his at Tromso, Yttergård Jenssen, is one name who has rushed to praise the youngster. “He has some skills that are completely raw. He’s so playful with the ball. And the way he moves on a football field… There’s something artistic about it. He is a bit reminiscent of Martin Ødegaard.”

Fine praise indeed for a player who is still only 20. The young Norwegian has featured just three times for Bremen since moving but his numbers at youth level speak for themselves.

He left Carrington having registered ten official assists at youth level alongside eight goals. They’re not jaw-dropping numbers by any means but the fact he’s left and immediately playing senior team football in a major European league suggests he’d have something to offer this current United side.

Sadly, they will never quite know whether he’d have made the grade or not at Old Trafford.

Allan Donald will have his work cut out this week as he prepares one of Bangladesh’s least experienced pace attacks for the Chattogram Test against Sri Lanka. The home side are missing their important spin duo in Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, apart from Taskin Ahmed, their most in-form fast bowler.The South African great, who joined Bangladesh’s coaching staff as the fast bowling coach in March, is focused on what is in front of him in his first home series. Donald said that he is already impressed with the hunger of the Bangladesh fast bowling unit, particularly how they have stepped up in the last five months.”These kids want it, that’s the great thing. My way of coaching is mindset, mental, attitude and creativity. At this level, these things run (parallel). Every single training session is to buy into creating pressure.”Taskin has a heart of gold, he has a massive heart. Once he is back to lead the attack, we will see a lot more of the hunger. I am excited with what I have seen.”Donald remains confident that the likes of Shoriful, Ebadot and Khaled can repeat their impressive showing in overseas Tests,”I was really impressed with Shoriful especially in the one-dayers. On his day, the Belgian was one of the best players in the Premier League. His ability to dribble past opponents with ease, his ability to unlock a defence and his ability to find the net was pretty much unmatched at the time of his peak.

Like Palmer, he could dazzle an opposition, leave them in his dust and to wonder what on earth had just happened.

Remember that goal against Arsenal? Of course you do. Hazard has received the ball close the half way line before dancing beyond Francis Coquelin, leaving Laurent Koscielny in his wake and then finding the back of the net.

Off went Hazard, gleeful and smug at what he had just done. Well, Palmer possesses a similar sort of look after he’s just scored. He’s got that cheeky grin, he’s got that famous celebration and he’s becoming every bit as important as that man Hazard was.

During his time at the Bridge, the winger was a marvel, scoring 110 goals and supplying 85 assists in 352 outings for the club. It’s not a bad record, is it?

Chelsea may have finally found their new talisman in Palmer but they’ve also now stumbled upon a player who’s argubly rather more similar.

Over the summer, Chelsea did plenty of business. Isn’t that a surprising turn of events? We jest, of course, but one of the most interesting names to arrive was Jadon Sancho.

During his days at Borussia Dortmund, he was “astonishing” in the words of Owen Hargreaves, amassing 53 goals and 67 assists in 158 games. There was a particularly remarkable campaign during 2019/20 where he scored 17 times and supplied an equal number of assists in Bundesliga action.

It was that red-hot season that led him to become one of the most sought-after players in Europe. It was that year and the subsequent term that led Manchester United to pay a whopping £73m for his services. Unfortunately, it never quite happened for him at Old Trafford.

Sancho joined Chelsea this summer on an initial loan deal having found the net on just 12 occasions in United red, and supplying six assists. Those are awful numbers for someone who was so prolific in that third of the pitch during his days in Germany.

Not enjoying the best of relationships with Erik ten Hag, the English winger had to get out and he duly did over the summer. Moving to west London, he is enjoying quite the start to life under Enzo Maresca, emulating a certain Hazard and another former Blue in Cesc Fabregas in the process.

Indeed, over the weekend Sancho became just the third Chelsea player to get an assist in each of his first three Premier League outings, joining Hazard (2012) and Fabregas (2014) in the process.

Interesingly enough, Sancho combines the best of those two players. Like the Belgian, he’s a wonderful dribbler of the ball, ranking in the best 3% of positionally similar players over the last year for succesful take-ons per 90 minutes with 3.76. Like Fabregas, he’s a tremendous creator, ranking among the top 18% of wingers for progressive passes.

Cast our mind back that dazzling 19/20 season and those creative numbers were sky-high, supplying 0.63 assists per 90, enough to rank him in the best 2% of wingers in the Bundesliga that term.

Fabregas ended his Premier League career with a staggering 118 assists in 350 games so the Englishman has some catching up to do. That said, you can clearly see where the parallels lie.

Some may have laughed when Chelsea signed Sancho on deadline day but he is quickly proving the doubters wrong. He already looks like a fine addition to the pack.

Brennan Johnson proved ineffective for Spurs out wide, among others, with Postecoglou’s side failing to break down a resolute Arsenal despite taking control of possession and pressuring the Gunners on many occasions.

A win at Coventry tonight, which could spark a potential cup run, would be the right remedy – and Postecoglou has already made a promise to Tottenham supporters on their ambitions for silverware this season.

“Usually in my second season I win things,” Postecolgou told Sky Sports in August (via The Metro).

“That’s the whole idea. First year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. Hopefully the second year is going onto win things.

“Of course it’s easier said than done, particularly in the Premier League and the competition we’re in. That’s always the way I’ve looked at it, is that the second year you should be in a position where you can push on, depending on how the first year has gone. Last year we had some really good moments, obviously we had some tough moments. I think we learnt as much from the tough moments as we did from the good stuff and hopefully that means we’re in a good place.”

Chairman Daniel Levy backed Postecoglou with key new additions in the summer, like highly-rated English sensation Archie Gray, who joined the club from Leeds United in a deal worth £40 million.

Spurs rejected the chance to sign Conor Gallagher, who was heavily linked with a move to north London, in favour of striking a deal for Gray instead. The 18-year-old has made two cameos off the bench spanning 30 minutes so far, but tonight could be a golden opportunity for the midfielder to play his first full 90 for the club.
