BBL considering radical version of timed out rule to speed up play

Players could have to face up within a certain time limit to avoid allowing the bowler a free delivery at exposed stumps

The BBL is close to introducing a radical version of the timed out rule for the upcoming season in an attempt to find ways to speed up play.Cricket Australia’s playing conditions committee is looking into the stricter monitoring of time between the fall of a wicket and the next ball and a potential penalty for players that take too long. The current Timed Out law, 40.1.1, states: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be in position to take guard or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”This law has been previously updated in CA’s BBL playing conditions to state that players must be in position within 60 seconds. However, the playing condition has never been enforced with examples of players taking more than two minutes to face up without any consequence. The BBL is now considering a 75-second limit however it is understood players would not be given timed out should they fail to meet the time allowed. Instead, one proposal is that the bowler will get a version of a batting free-hit with the batter to stand aside and allow a free delivery at the stumps. If the bowler did not hit the stumps, the batter would be able to start their innings. In reality, it is unlikely that it will come into play given batters will be on notice to get to the crease promptly, with any such playing condition acting as a deterrent against unnecessary delays.BBL general manager Alistair Dobson told ESPNcricinfo that the exact details of the rule were still being considered.”We know Big Bash fans want to watch fast-paced, exciting cricket on TV and in the stadium,” he said. “We have spent the off-season looking at ways to keep the game moving and are close to finalising what this might look like.”The Hundred introduced a rule this season to speed up play from a bowling perspective with an extra player moved inside the circle for each over that is not bowled within the allotted time, but it is unlikely that will be introduced in the BBL this season due to various broadcast commitments. The BBL has not been afraid to tinker with T20 cricket after introducing three new playing conditions last year with the Bash Boost, the X Factor, and the Power Surge coming into the competition with mixed success. All three are likely to remain this season with the Power Surge proving a popular addition last year.CA is still working through what the BBL fixtures will look like due to difficulties with border restrictions around the country. The WBBL is set to be played entirely in the states of Tasmania, South Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland but the teams from New South Wales and Victoria had the opportunity to do 14 days quarantine in Tasmania in order to start the tournament. The same opportunity is unlikely to be afforded to the men’s teams with New South Wales and Victoria set to play Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup matches between themselves in the lead up to the BBL after both states were denied quarantine options outside of their states.

European club considering move for "outstanding" £40k-p/w Tottenham player

da pinup bet: After losing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Marseille this summer, Tottenham Hotspur could be about to bid farewell to another player, with a European club now considering a move.

Tottenham transfer news

da bet sport: It's been a mixed summer for those in north London, who have so far welcomed just two reinforcements in the form of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. The latter particularly stands out as a solid piece of business, but given that the Leeds United academy graduate is still just 18 years old, it remains to be seen how much he can impact Ange Postecoglou's starting side. And whilst welcoming a young player, Spurs have sold an experienced midfielder in Hojbjerg.

The Dane may not be the last player to head for the exit door, either, as Daniel Levy gets ruthless this summer. According to reports in Turkey (via The Spurs Web), Galatasaray have now joined the race to sign Emerson Royal from Tottenham this summer, putting themselves alongside the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Milan to sign the right-back before the window slams shut at the end of next month.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 26, 2024

Earning a reported £40k-a-week, Royal has struggled at times in north London and the arrival of Gray hands Postecoglou the right-back cover he needs for Pedro Porro. With European clubs lining up to sign Royal, it would be a deal worth sanctioning for the Lilywhites. What's more, Galatasaray could kill two birds with one stone for Spurs given that they're also reportedly interested in signing Bryan Gil – although he seems close to a move to La Liga outfit Girona.

richarlison-bryan-gil-tottenham-opinion

With the Premier League campaign approaching, Spurs have just a matter of weeks to hand Postecoglou the strongest squad possible to open his second season in charge.

Tottenham no longer need "outstanding" Royal

Considering Royal struggled for starts last term, the emergence of Gray could only make matters worse next season. As things stand, the Lilywhites simply no longer need the Brazilian, despite Postecoglou's praise last season. The Spurs boss said via Football.london: "I see it on a daily basis, others don’t, but if you watch Emerson Royal train every day, you’d think he plays every game.

"He’s just outstanding with his attitude and demeanour around the place. There’s no time for anyone to feel down. When you see a guy like Emerson, and we’ve got a few in that boat this year like Fraser [Forster] or Ben [Davies], they train so hard every day, always have the greatest disposition in terms of their demeanour, it doesn’t give anyone else an excuse to not feel up for it."

A move to the likes of Milan, Dortmund or, indeed, Galatasaray wouldn't exactly be a bad next step either, but Spurs will want to make sure that they're cashing in on their right-back even if he is surplus to requirements in north London. With a month left until the window slams shut, the Lilywhites still have plenty to do.

The official arrivals of Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Estevao Willian and Renato Veiga cost Chelsea around £93 million in total, while deals for Aaron Anselmino and Caleb Wiley most recently have added a further £25.5 million (The Athletic).

Regardless of their spending so far, it remains the case that Chelsea could still make more signings before deadline day on August 30. The west Londoners are believed to be in the market for a new winger, with Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams on Chelsea's radar.

Maresca has also made it clear he wants a new striker behind-the-scenes, according to some reports, which led to a failed bid for Atletico Madrid starlet Samu Omorodion.

Other marquee names have been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge, like Napoli star Victor Osimhen, but a move for the Nigerian appears less and less likely as the window ticks on due to the sheer size of a potential deal.

Chelsea have considered Lille star Jonathan David as a cheaper option, but the Blues even tried their hand with an audacious approach for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak at the start of this month.

Both Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson were responsible for the majority of Chelsea's goalscoring output last season, but as previously stated, it is believed Maresca is keen on bringing in a new striker to ease the burden.

Chelsea offered PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani

According to HITC, PSG may have just handed them a solution to grant Maresca's wish in the form of Randal Kolo Muani.

The outlet claims Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Kolo Muani from PSG, as they look to offload strikers and make room for Osimhen. The Ligue 1 champions are attempting to strike a deal with Napoli over the Nigerian, but will need to offload both Kolo Muani and Goncalo Ramos to free up squad space.

Randal Kolo Muani

The 25-year-old, who's been called a "complete" striker by Kylian Mbappe, bagged 23 goals and 17 assists in the 22/23 season for Eintracht Frankfurt, before joining PSG last summer.

Kolo Muani, on around £205,000-per-week at PSG, hasn't quite reached those same heights at the Parc des Princes, but perhaps Maresca could offer him a fresh start, making this one to watch.

Several of England’s all-format players have withdrawn from this year’s IPL as a result of bubble fatigue and in anticipation of a long winter.Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Dawid Malan have joined Jos Buttler in confirming their withdrawals. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes had pulled out previously.Malan will be replaced at Punjab Kings for the rest of the season by Aiden Markram. Bairstow’s spot in Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, has been taken up by Sherfane Rutherford.Bairstow (Sunrisers), Woakes (Delhi Capitals), Malan and Buttler (Rajasthan Royals) have all been named in England’s T20 World Cup squad and might expect to be named in England’s Ashes tour party, too. As a result, they face the prospect of more than four months away from home including time in quarantine as they move from country to country. Buttler and Woakes are the fathers of young children, with Buttler having just celebrated the arrival of his second child. It has emerged in recent days that all players heading to the IPL (which resumes on September 19) would be required to undergo six days of quarantine. This may well have been a contributory factor in the abandonment of the Manchester Test.Related

Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, George Garton, Eoin Morgan, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone and Jason Roy are the England players still expected to participate in the IPL. Some are expected to fly to the UAE today (Saturday) on a commercial flight. One or two others may not depart until after T20 Finals Day (on September 18). From that group of players, only Sam Curran and Moeen are expected to be named in the Ashes touring party, though it would be no surprise at all if Moeen, a father of two young children, withdrew from that.Indeed, the future of that tour looks more precarious than ever after the events at Emirates Old Trafford. A significant number of senior players remain deeply uncomfortable with the prospect of a two-week quarantine at the start of that tour and, even more so, at the prospect of putting their families through the same. As a result, a number of high-profile withdrawals seem inevitable. In relation to the Ashes tour, Tom Harrison, ECB chief executive, told Sky Sports on Friday: “Now that this Test series has come to an early conclusion, that becomes priority number one for us to work through with the players. It’s a conversation which now takes the centre stage, because it’s looming large on the horizon.”While the ECB are adamant the tour will go ahead, the prospect of a second-string England side competing in the Ashes is real. Whether that is deemed to compromise the integrity of the events remains to be seen.A crucial issue for the England players is the uncertainly surrounding travel to Australia at present. While there has been talk of allowing them to serve a relatively soft quarantine – perhaps in a resort hotel on the Gold Coast which would allow them access to golf courses – there are no guarantees. Perhaps more importantly, there are no guarantees such privileges would be extended to traveling family members. There is also the prospect of further quarantine requirements as the tour party moves between states.”We should always have that ambition in mind to go to Australia with our best possible team,” Harrison said. “It’s an iconic Test series to play in, all England players want to be part of it.”I totally understand the players’ perspective on families being present and the conditions under which families are present. I also don’t think there’s anything unreasonable about the way that debate has been positioned.”It’s a conversation we’re having in partnership with Cricket Australia and the Australian government, all trying to get to the right solution for everyone to feel comfortable about going.”What events at Emirates Old Trafford underline, however, is the power of modern players and their refusal to be cajoled into endless tournaments. Not even the IPL or the Ashes are immune to such pressures.

Romano: Everton hold talks with 20 y/o who is keen on Goodison Park move

da betobet: Whilst their activity in previous transfer windows was severely hampered by financial sanctions, Everton appear eager to put that behind them and use this summer to significantly improve Sean Dyche's side.

Everton eager to get business done quickly

da realsbet: Despite the window still being in its early stages, Everton have already managed to get a number of deals over the line. The Toffees' first incoming of the summer saw Tim Iroegbunam join the club from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £9million.

Iroegbunam was followed through the door at Goodison by former Sheffield United star Iliman Ndiaye who joined in a €20million (£16.9million) move from Marseille. The Senegal international signed a five-year deal with the Toffees and will no doubt play a vital part in Dyche's side next season.

Whilst Everton have already paid out for new signings, with Jack Harrison also returning on loan, the Toffees look set to receive a significant windfall from the imminent departure of Amadou Onana. The Belgian midfielder looks close to completing a £50million move to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa. Whilst Onana will be sorely missed at Goodison, his departure will give the club much-needed funds to bring in more players.

With Everton showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market this summer, the club are now in talks to sign one of their long-term targets.

Toffees have genuine interest in Championship talent

According to the X account of transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Everton are eager to pursue a deal for Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto this summer. Romano has reported that talks have recently taken place between Gnonto's camp and the Merseyside outfit with negotiations now well underway.

The post then goes on to claim that the Italian winger is keen on a move to Goodison Park, perhaps owing to Leeds' failure to secure promotion from the Championship last season.

The Toffees have been eager to sign Gnonto for some time with the 20-year-old linked with a move to Merseyside as far back as last summer. With Daniel Farke's side possibly under pressure to sell some of their biggest talents to make more additions of their own, Everton could finally land the Italy international before the window slams shut next month.

Whilst last season saw Gnonto play his football in the Championship, the winger is no stranger to Premier League football with the Italian impressing during Leeds' most recent spell in the topflight.

Speaking back in January 2023, Sky Sports pundit and former Man United defender Gary Neville sang Gnonto's praises, saying of the player:

"To see someone so mature, so young is very unusual in that position. Sometimes you see potential and talent but watching him so closely, his understanding of where to be, his choice of pass, when to run with it, his awareness of teammates, really good honestly."

With Gnonto's departure from Elland Road looking more likely this summer, now could be the time for the Toffees to finally swoop in and bring the player to Goodison Park.
