Marcus Stoinis and Kagiso Rabada lead Delhi Capitals' rout of Royal Challengers Bangalore

Kohli’s team never got going in their chase of 197 as Rabada ended with 4 for 24, the best figures of this IPL

Agarkar: RCB’s bowling wasn’t as good as it could’ve been

Just when the Royal Challengers Bangalore were started to think they were getting their combinations and players’ roles right this IPL, they were beaten comprehensively by the Delhi Capitals, one of the most balanced sides who lead the points table with four wins out of five games. After posting a challenging 196 with the help of their openers and Marcus Stoinis’ unbeaten 53 off 26, the Capitals’ well-oiled bowling attack strangled the Royal Challengers chase with precise and economical bowling that led to regular wickets.Virat Kohli tried stretching the chase even as the asking rate surged after the fall of Devdutt Padikkal, Aaron Finch and AB de Villiers inside the powerplay. Pace sensation Kagiso Rabada then returned for his second over – the 14th of the chase – to have his opposition captain caught behind. The Royal Challengers needed a stiff 100 from 36 balls at the end of the over, and the required rate headed only in one direction as Rabada closed the chase out with figures of 4 for 24 – the best of this tournament – after being on a hat-trick in the 18th over.Capitals’ skillful bowling attackA silver lining of Amit Mishra being out of the tournament was that the Capitals could bring their economical bowler Axar Patel back. After his first ball was driven beautifully for four by Kohli, Patel extracted turn to beat his outside edge two balls later, and slowed down the ball further on the last ball to have Finch caught behind for a scratchy 13.This, after Finch had been warned by R Ashwin while backing up too far at the non-striker’s end in the previous over. Some more drama was left for the sixth over when de Villiers sent Kohli back for a quick single after pushing the ball to mid-on but Rabada couldn’t get a direct hit. Next ball de Villiers whipped Anrich Nortje over mid-off with his supple wrists but the quick bowler replied immediately with his compatriots’ wicket as de Villiers top-edged a 150km delivery that Shikhar Dhawan pouched while running backwards from extra cover.Rabada had earlier conceded only five in the first over and put down a simple return catch of Finch, but the Capitals have clear plans for the pace spearhead: keep at least two of his overs for the end. That the boundaries dried up for over five overs after the seventh, with Patel taking the pace off and Ashwin mixing up his offbreaks with carrom balls and flatter deliveries, only helped Rabada ‘s second over. The scoreboard pressure meant Moeen Ali holed out off Patel to deep midwicket for 11 off 13 and Rabada had his eyes on one man. With 106 to get from 42, the onus was on Kohli and he took on a Rabada short ball but only edged it behind for 43. Five down for 94, the Royal Challengers weren’t going to recover from that against Rabada and Nortje, who kept breaching the 150kmh mark. Birthday boy Washington Sundar impressed briefly with some off-side strokes off Rabada before being deceived by a slower bouncer, and Shivam Dube soon missed a slog to lose his stumps.Capitals’ best powerplay this IPLEarlier, the Capitals openers Prithvi Shaw and Dhawan put up their best powerplay of the season, of 63, after being put in to bat. Shaw started by targeting the quicker bowlers and Dhawan, who normally drops anchor, attacked as well, going after Navdeep Saini and Yuzvendra Chahal. As soon as Chahal came on in the fifth over, the Capitals openers collected 18 off him to make Kohli change his plans. The Royal Challengers bowler who stood out yet again in the powerplay was Sundar. He sent down three in the first six, stifled the openers with his angle from wide of the crease from around the wicket, and conceded only one four in that phase before finishing on 0 for 20 for the second game in a row.Kagiso Rabada celebrates with his team-mates•BCCI

The Stoinis show againThe Capitals innings was fizzling out after the powerplay. With the field spread and accurate bowling from Mohammad Siraj – who came into the XI with Ali – the boundaries started drying up. Shaw was the first wicket to fall as he edged Siraj behind, followed by Dhawan holing out to long-on and Shreyas Iyer to deep midwicket where Padikkal completed a fantastic hop-out-and-back-in catch. The focus was now on Rishabh Pant and Stoinis to rebuild and accelerate from 90 for 3 in the 12th over.Stoinis came out at No. 5 and didn’t waste any time to settle in, even as Pant was kept quiet by the bowlers. Stoinis was also helped by the three chances he got – a return catch that slipped through Chahal’s hands on 3 in 13th over, another chance put down by Chahal at deep midwicket off Saini on 30, and a run-out chance missed when Pant said no for a second run and Stoinis, on 45, had given up at the non-striker’s end after turning back but an inaccurate throw saved him.The Royal Challengers paid the price for all this. Stoinis not only cashed in when the bowlers erred with full or short deliveries but also shuffled across to the off side to whip and dispatch the ball to the leg side, especially when fine leg was in the 30-yard circle. His and Pant’s assault at the end meant the Capitals collected under 10 runs in only one of the last seven overs, with 94 runs coming off those 42 balls. Stoinis was particularly brutal against Saini and Siraj, by targeting the straight and leg-side boundaries. His 24-ball fifty and Saini’s 0 for 48 off three overs meant the Capitals got a total that was too much for the Royal Challengers.

Chelsea eye Disasi replacement who’s one of "the best CBs in the world"

da dobrowin: Chelsea are still competing to secure a place in Europe for the 2024/25 campaign and have three games left to finish as high up in the table as possible.

da gbg bet: After Manchester United's 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace earlier this week, the Blues are seventh in the Premier League and only two points adrift of Newcastle United in sixth.

The London-based giants can either land a place in the Europa Conference League or the Europa League for next season, having spent the current campaign without any European football.

This means that there is still plenty to play for over the next three games. However, some attention is still on the upcoming summer transfer window as Chelsea look to improve their playing squad.

Todd Boehly and his team are already reportedly eyeing targets to come in and compete with Mauricio Pochettino's current options, and a defender from LaLiga is supposedly on their list.

Chelsea's interest in Barcelona star

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Blues are one of a number of teams interested in a deal to sign versatile Barcelona defender Jules Kounde.

The report claims that the Spanish giants have to cash in on one of their current centre-back options, having overloaded in that position, and the France international has attracted interest from a host of clubs.

Chelsea, PSG, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Inter, and AC Milan are all said to be eyeing up the former Seville star ahead of the summer, but the outlet does not name a potential price tag for the ace.

Jules Kounde

It does, however, reveal that Bayern Munich are keen on Ronald Araujo, and the Uruguay international could, therefore, be the centre-back Barcelona sell, instead of Kounde.

The report adds that the versatile enforcer, who can play at right-back or in the heart of the defence, is willing to remain with the Catalan giants, which does not suggest that he is likely to push for an exit from the Nou Camp this summer.

Chelsea's pursuit of Kounde comes almost two years on from when they failed to sign him on a permanent deal from Seville, in the summer he made the move to Barcelona.

Sky Sports reported that the Blues were confident that they would get a deal over the line to add the French titan to their squad, having agreed a deal with the Spanish side, only for the player to wait for a transfer to Barca.

Todd-Boehly

Boehly and his team could now avenge that one that got away by bringing him to Stamford Bridge this summer, should he become available.

Pochettino could then brutally ditch current first-team centre-back Axel Disasi by bringing Kounde in as an upgrade on his compatriot over the coming months.

Axel Disasi's season in numbers

The 26-year-old battler recently lost his place in the starting XI after Chelsea were hammered 5-0 by rivals Arsenal at The Emirates back in April.

Veteran defender Thiago Silva has replaced him in the lineup over the last three games – a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur and a 5-0 win over West Ham United.

Axel Disasi

Disasi has, however, started 29 of his 31 appearances in the Premier League so far this term, which shows that he has been a regular starter for the majority of the campaign.

The French colossus, who has played eight games at right-back this season, has been solid from a physical perspective in the English top-flight, with a duel success rate of 65%. This shows that opposition forwards rarely get the better of him in one-on-battles on the ground and in the air.

As you can see in the table above, Disasi ranks well below average in a number of defensive statistics against his positional peers in the Premier League this term.

However, he does rank above average in key possession-based statistics. The former Monaco star ranks within the top 33% of centre-backs in the division for progressive passes per 90 (3.91), and the top 27% for progressive carries per 90 (1.05).

Why Chelsea could brutally replace Axel Disasi

Pochettino could brutally replace Disasi by securing a deal to sign Kounde this summer, as the French gem has the potential to be a big upgrade at the heart of the Blues defence.

Firstly, the Barcelona star has averaged more tackles (1.21), interceptions (0.85), blocks (1.06), and aerials won (2.38) per 90 in LaLiga than the Chelsea man has in the Premier League.

This suggests that the ex-Seville man could offer more to the team than Disasi from a defensive perspective, as he cuts out opposition attacks more frequently than his compatriot.

The 25-year-old ace, who has won 63% of his aerial battles in the league, was once reportedly told by Xavi that he and Araujo would be among "the best CBs in the world" at Barcelona, and his work in possession suggests that it was a fair claim by the manager.

As you can see in the table above, Kounde is far more progressive and forward-thinking in his use of the ball than Disasi, with significantly more shot-creating actions, progressive passes, and progressive carries per 90.

In fact, the Barcelona star ranks within the top 1% of centre-backs in LaLiga for progressive passes per 90, the top 3% for progressive carries per 90, and the top 3% for shot-creating actions per 90.

He also ranks within the top 3% of centre-backs in the Men's Big 5 Leagues and European competitions for progressive passes per 90 (7.00), which speaks to how well he has performed across Europe's major leagues.

Boehly could avenge Chelsea's Lukaku mistake by signing £51m "machine"

The Blues have been linked with a move for the Serie A sensation this summer.

ByDan Emery May 7, 2024

Kounde is a strong defender, who can play at right-back or centre-back, and has the quality in and out of possession to be a big upgrade on Disasi, as shown in the aforementioned statistics.

This is why Pochettino could then brutally ditch his own versatile French defender by bringing the Barcelona titan to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Azeem Rafiq was 'on brink of suicide' after experiencing racism at Yorkshire

Ex-player says he ‘lost faith in humanity’ after claiming racist behaviour was ignored by club

Azeem Rafiq has claimed his experiences of racism at Yorkshire left him on the brink of suicide.Rafiq, a former England U19 and Yorkshire captain, says he “lost faith in humanity” after his reports of racist behaviour were “ignored” by the club.Originally seen as a symbol of the club’s desire to embrace the ethnic diversity of the urban areas around its Leeds home, Rafiq came to believe that “institutional racism” at the club is “worse than it’s ever been”.Now aged 29 and pursuing a career away from the game, Rafiq has chosen to speak out in the hope that he can “prevent anyone else feeling the same pain.””I know how close I was to committing suicide during my time at Yorkshire,” he tells ESPNcricinfo. “I was living my family’s dream as a professional cricketer, but inside I was dying. I was dreading going to work. I was in pain every day.”There were times I did things to try and fit in that, as a Muslim, I now look back on and regret. I’m not proud of it at all.”But as soon as I stopped trying to fit in, I was an outsider. There were no coaches on the staff from a similar background who understood what it was like.”Look at the facts and figures. Look at a squad photograph. Look at the coaches. How many non-white faces do you see? Despite the ethnic diversity of the cities in Yorkshire, despite the love for the game from Asian communities, how many people from those backgrounds are making it into the first team?”It’s obvious to anyone who cares that there’s a problem. Do I think there is institutional racism? It’s at its peak in my opinion. It’s worse than it’s ever been.”My only motivation now is to prevent anyone else feeling the same pain.”Yorkshire have so far declined ESPNcricinfo’s request to make a public response to Rafiq’s claims. They have, though, told ESPNcricinfo a board member is in touch with him and will file a report to the committee. For reasons of “sensitivity and confidentiality” they say it would be inappropriate to comment further. This, however, was news to Rafiq. “Someone called me a week or so ago,” he says. “It was made very clear that the conversation we had was as friends and not in any official capacity. It now seems it was an attempt to show they were doing something. I feel quite misled, to be honest.”This is an example of what I mean. When Michael Carberry came out with his comments, the ECB put out a statement which basically said ‘we’re sorry to hear this; we need to listen and we need to do better.’ That was, I think, exactly the right reaction. I have quite a lot of faith in Tom Harrison.”But Yorkshire don’t want to listen and they don’t want to change. And part of the reason for that is the people who were involved in the incidents I’m talking about are still at the club. They just want to sweep it under the carpet.”But not this time. Not again. I know what I’m doing here. I know that by speaking out I’m damaging my chances of working in the game again. But I also know it’s the right thing to do and if I have to stand alone to do it, I will.”Azeem Rafiq bowls on debut for Derbyshire after arriving on loan from Yorkshire•Getty Images

Rafiq’s views first came to light in an interview with Taha Hashim for Wisden.com. While the conversation was meant to be about his new business in catering – and his decision to provide free meals for care workers during the Covid-19 pandemic – he became, in his words, “emotional” when asked about his great friend and mentor, Adil Rashid. “And then a lot more came out.”That was then followed up with further exploration on the theme in The Cricket Badger podcast with James Buttler. But his expectations that someone in power within the game would be in touch and ask for more details were disappointed. Nobody called. For a sport that is apparently trying to become more accessible to people from ethnic communities, it seems an oddly passive response.”When I first spoke about this subject, to Wisden on-line, I didn’t mention the club by name,” he says now. “As a result, Yorkshire claimed I might not have been talking about them. So let me make it really clear: I am talking about Yorkshire. I believe the club is institutionally racist and I don’t believe they are prepared to acknowledge the fact or willing to change.”There were times while he was on the staff when Rafiq did try to change things. During one game in Scarborough, a spectator kept shouting his negative views about the performance of the “Paki” players. The comments were reported by both another member of the crowd and by Rafiq. It turned out the individual concerned was the grandfather of one of the players. This incident, it transpires, was also reported to the ECB and the police. Both investigated and replied to the complainant; Yorkshire did not.”Everyone in the dressing room laughed when they found out,” Rafiq remembers. “Well, everyone but me. How was that meant to make me feel? Nothing was done.”On another occasion, a Muslim boy in the crowd had a pint of beer thrown over his face. Again, Rafiq says the reaction in the dressing room was laughter when they were informed. “The boy was given a jumper by the club,” Rafiq says, “but the laughter told me what people really thought.”ALSO READ: What has English cricket been like for black players? He told Wisden.com another story about his early days in the game. “There was me, Adil Rashid, Ajmal Shahzad and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan. We’re walking onto the field and one player said: ‘There’s too many of you lot. We need to have a word about that.'”You can imagine the sort of thing that leaves on you, and you hear these things all day, every day. I’ve been in that system for nearly the best part of two decades. I know how it works. I’d love to see change.”On another occasion, a Yorkshire player was disciplined by the ECB for an on-field outburst that was, at best, clumsy and at worst racist. “But instead of the club disciplining him, a board member employed Luis Suárez’s lawyers to ensure he got off. What was I meant to think of that?”I’m talking some very high-profile players here. Some very high-profile administrators and media figures. I know they can make life difficult for me. I know I’ll be labelled as a trouble-maker. But if I don’t stand and raise a voice, I couldn’t forgive myself.”He is keen to point out that not everyone at the club was the same. Joe Root comes in for particular praise. Paul Farbrace and Jason Gillespie are described as “amazing” and he distinguishes between some who he believes would benefit from greater education in this area and some who are, in his words, “simply racist”.”I had a captain who was openly racist,” he says. “There’s no two ways about it. Everyone else seemed to find him funny.”But I just felt isolated. It’s a horrible feeling. And I knew I should speak out and say something and I nearly always didn’t. But when I finally did I was immediately isolated. I was made to feel like I was the one who had done something wrong.”Azeem Rafiq in action during his return to Yorkshire in 2016•Getty Images

Rafiq’s career at Yorkshire reached a particularly tragic end. After a difficult pregnancy which had involved numerous emergency trips to the hospital, his son was still-born. While some of the players – notably Root – contacted him to express their condolences and the PCA were, in Rafiq’s words, “amazing”, he felt the club’s reaction was cold.”I took my son straight from the hospital to the funeral,” he says. “Nothing can be harder than that.”Yorkshire told me they would look after me professionally and personally. But all I heard after that was a short email. I was told I was being released. I felt it was used against me, really. The way it was done was horrible.”It killed me for a while. I lost all trust in anything and anyone. I’d spent the best part of a decade around those people. I thought they had my best interests at heart. I lost faith in humanity.”He has now moved on. He has a healthy son, a thriving young business and, he says, has found fulfilment elsewhere. He’s no longer pursuing a career in the professional game. But he still wants change. And what he feels is required now is for the club to embark on a period of introspection and accept they have lessons to learn.”I want the authorities to wake up,” he says. “I want them to stop looking at the issue of race as a PR activity or a marketing activity. I want them to really engage and listen and change. Someone is going to be tipped over the edge if we’re not careful.”

Man City in contact to sign £100m midfielder who could star alongside Rodri

da bet7: Manchester City are looking to sign a current Premier League star, with contact already made over a possible transfer.

Man City transfer rumours

da spicy bet: Despite being knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid earlier this month, it promises to be a busy end to the season, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking to retain the Premier League title and the FA Cup.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Off the pitch, Etihad officials could also be busy when it comes to buying and selling ahead of the 2024/25 season, with Jack Grealish the latest player to be linked with a move away. Bernardo Silva continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona, but there have been a number of incoming rumours.

For example, Crystal Palace star Michael Olise appears to be a target, as well as Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, who City are reportedly willing to break the bank for.

Report: Man City eyeing summer move for international “wonderkid”

He once had a spell at Manchester United.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 20, 2024

Former academy gem Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a return to Manchester as the long-term replacement for Kyle Walker, and a new update suggests contact has been made for a possible Rodri partner.

Man City make Bruno Guimaraes approach

According to 90min, Man City are looking to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes and have approached the player's camp over a move. The report states that Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are contenders to sign the Brazilian midfielder, with the Gunners also looking at Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

City’s interest in Guimaraes comes as the club are ‘looking for a player to compliment Rodri and like the fact Guimaraes can play as a number six or a number eight’. However, the report adds that even though Newcastle need to bring in some funds to comply with FFP, they would love to keep Guimaraes, so his £100m release clause may need to be triggered.

Guimaraes has been a regular at St James’ Park since joining in 2022 and has gone from strength to strength, with his Transfermarkt valuation doubling to a career-high €85m since moving to England. He has now made more than 100 appearances for Newcastle, 44 of which have come during the current campaign, and Guimaraes quickly received praise from Magpies legend Alan Shearer as well, who said in 2022.

“He was superb. Man of the match for me was Bruno. The way he handles that ball under pressure and is able to ping that ball into the forward players, he’s so comfortable on the ball, particularly if you give him this amount of space.”

Capable of playing as a holding or central midfielder, you could argue that a Rodri and Guimaraes partnership in midfield could be dominant for City, and if the club get their way, we may see that at the Etihad come August.

England v Ireland ODI squad 2020: Winners and losers

Joe Denly the continuity selection while Sam Hain and Phil Salt among batting hopefuls who miss out

WinnersJoe Denly
While it’s no surprise Denly has been picked, given he was sent to the ODI bubble last week, his continued selection across formats remains slightly baffling. He is, no doubt, a perfectly useful one-day batsman, as he showed with two fifties in the South Africa series at the start of the year. But at 34, it seems as though he has little chance of making the cut for the 2023 World Cup, and his inclusion blocks opportunities for several talented young batsmen (see below). His white-ball central contract may be a factor, but his legspin can hardly be relevant given there are three frontline spin-bowling options in this squad.Sam Billings
Billings fluffed his lines when he was handed the vice-captaincy in the T20I series in New Zealand, managing 34 runs in five innings, but taking the rest of the winter off seems to have helped him recover from a “tough year”. He is a talented player no doubt, but an average of 22.58 after 12 ODI innings shows he is yet to prove himself at international level. Bairstow seems the more likely option to take the gloves, and at 29, Billings could do with delivering on his promise sooner rather than later.Liam Dawson
It can feel like Dawson has been in just about every England white-ball squad over the last five years, but he has somehow only played nine limited-overs internationals to date. He could prove a cunning inclusion on his home ground, with its big square boundaries, and has the chance to prove that at 30 he is an intelligent bowler who can offer the control that younger rivals to the back-up spin role – like Mason Crane and Matt Parkinson – cannot. His 4 for 21 in Friday’s warm-up game sealed his spot in this squad.Reece Topley
Topley was on the verge of an England recall in 2018 when he felt a problem in his back following a Lions game, which turned out to be yet another stress fracture – his fifth in the space of four years. But 11 Blast games and two Championship matches later, he is back in the fold and in line to play his first international game since 2016. There is plenty to like about him as a bowler, not least his ability to generate good pace from his 6ft 7in frame, and he provides an option both in the Powerplay and at the death.David Willey
Willey had accepted that his international career was probably over last winter after he was left out of the white-ball tours following the agony of his last-minute World Cup omission. He thinks he is back towards his best after watching old footage to tweak his release point, and says that he has his enjoyment back after taking a break from the game. While the 2023 World Cup in India may not be the ideal set of conditions for his new-ball bowling, his inclusion proves he is still in the frame ahead of back-to-back T20 World Cups.LosersSam Hain missed the cut despite his impressive List A record•Getty Images

Ben Duckett
Duckett fell off the radar somewhat after he was sent home from a Lions tour in 2017-18 for pouring a drink over James Anderson, but was handed a chance to impress despite a mixed 2019 season with Notts. He hit 68 in England’s first intra-squad warm-up, and had spoken about his significant weight loss during lockdown as proof of his new-found professionalism, but has missed out on the final cut with other middle-order options preferred.Sam Hain
Hain has the highest List A average ever, his 59.78 putting him clear of Michael Bevan and Virat Kohli, and he thought he was close to an international call-up after being taken to Mumbai on a spin camp and then on the Lions tour to Australia this winter. But he still finds himself unable to get a game, with James Vince ahead of him in the pecking order for No. 3 options. It may well be that his strike rate (86.46 in his career) counts against him, with England preferring firepower all the way through their batting order.Laurie Evans
Evans earned a spot in the training squad on the back of his strong run on the T20 franchise circuit, which was kickstarted by a prolific second season at Sussex in 2018. He went on the Lions tour this winter, hitting 94 in a one-day game, but failed to press on after making a start in all three warm-up games last week. It may well be that aged 32, his best chance has now passed.Phil Salt
An ultra-attacking opening batsman, Salt whacked a 58-ball hundred in the Lions’ game against Ireland on Sunday as they chased down 297 with 15.2 overs to spare. But England had seemingly already made up their mind that he wasn’t part of their plans for the series. He was unfortunate (and mildly irritated) to miss out on their winter T20I tour after being an unused squad member against Pakistan at the start of last summer, and despite a prolific Big Bash season he finds himself some way back in England’s long queue of top-order options.Brydon Carse
While an inexperienced white-ball bowler – he has only played seven List A games in his career – Carse has impressed England’s management with his physique and pace over the past 12 months, and looked like a potential option to replace Liam Plunkett as a back-of-a-length, middle-overs specialist following a decent Lions tour. But Tom Curran and Saqib Mahmood have been picked as the right-arm seam options, with Richard Gleeson preferred as a reserve.
