Kohli 73 keeps RCB in playoff contention

A blistering 18-ball 40 from Glenn Maxwell finished the job as RCB sealed an impressive win

Vettori: Kohli at his best makes RCB a genuine title contender

Virat Kohli finally broke out of the funk, with 73 off 54 balls, his highest score this IPL, to keep Royal Challengers Bangalore’s campaign alive, but only . Royal Challengers still need Delhi Capitals, who now have a superior net run rate than them, to lose their final league fixture to Mumbai Indians, if they are to sneak into the playoffs. Royal Challengers’ victory meant Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad were out of the reckoning for playoffs.Kohli’s second half-century against Gujarat Titans – and only his second overall this season – formed the centerpiece of Royal Challengers’ successful pursuit of 169. Faf du Plessis simply rode in Kohli’s slipstream during a 115-run opening stand before holing out for 44 off 38 balls. Rashid Khan also got rid of Kohli, in his next over, but the game was all but over by then. Glenn Maxwell got the job done with a flurry of boundaries along with Dinesh Karthik.Such a dominant win didn’t seem likely when Royal Challengers’ designated death bowler Harshal Patel bowled just one over and then left the field after splitting the webbing in his bowling hand. Despite late blows from Hardik Pandya (62* off 47 balls) and Rashid (19* off 6 balls), Harshal-less RCB managed to limit Titans to 168 for 5 on a slow Wankhede pitch.Maxwell in the thick of the action
Maxwell’s first contribution of the evening was a spectacular one-handed grab at wide slip to send back Shubman Gill for 1. Maxwell then bowled two overs in the powerplay, which brought the wicket of Matthew Wade and cost Royal Challengers just two runs. Wade was visibly peeved at being given out lbw when he had thought he had bottom-edged a sweep onto his pad. He called for a review immediately, but UltraEdge didn’t detect a spike although some side-on replays suggested a deflection off the bat. So there wasn’t enough evidence for TV umpire Navdeep Singh to overturn the on-field out call.Maxwell could’ve also had Pandya on 14 had Suyash Prabhudessai not misjudged a catch at the long-on boundary.Miller and Pandya do the repair job
When du Plessis nailed a direct hit to run-out Wriddhiman Saha in the ninth over, Titans were 62 for 3. Pandya and David Miller then got together, forging a 61-run fourth-wicket stand. Pandya, in particular, struggled to time the ball on a pitch that offered grip to the slower bowlers. He swung so hard at Maxwell that he not only lost his shape but also his grip, with the bat flying over the square-leg region in the tenth over.As for Miller, he was more fluent against spin, taking fingerspinners Maxwell and Shahbaz Ahmed for 23 off 11 balls. However, Wanindu Hasaranga, the wristspinner, cut short Miller’s innings at 34 off 25 balls by pulling off a terrific return catch.Despite the unavailability of Harshal, Royal Challengers made Pandya work hard for the large part of his innings. He needed 42 balls to get to a half-century. Rashid and Pandya then plundered 34 off the last two overs, bowled by Siddharth Kaul and Josh Hazlewood, but they still couldn’t reach 170. The Kohli show
Kohli gave Royal Challengers’ chase a jumpstart, claiming 34 runs of the 55 they hit in the powerplay. His innings was pure theatre, with the Wankhede crowd right behind him. He pumped Mohammed Shami over his head for four in the third over and regularly hit over the top, a departure from his usual cagey approach in the powerplay.Fortune was also on his side on Thursday. When Shami found some seam movement, the ball did not shave the outside edge. And when Hardik Pandya nipped the ball into him and cramped him, the inside edge missed the stumps. Kohli also got a reprieve on 16 when Rashid, standing a few yards in from the square-leg boundary, dropped a catch.Kohli’s early assault prompted Titans to rush Rashid into the attack as early as the fifth over, but Kohli attacked him as well. He lofted him over his head for four and then rattled up 33-ball fifty in grand style, with his first-ever six off Rashid.Kohli, however, judiciously played out R Sai Kishore who varied his pace smartly and got more purchase from the pitch. When he drifted one into Kohli and got it to turn away sharply, it veered away from the outside edge. There were enough signs that this was Kohli’s night. Kohli was so pumped up that he even celebrated du Plessis’ boundaries with gusto.Rashid then returned to the attack to give Royal Challengers some late jitters. He snagged du Plessis and Kohli in successive overs and almost added Maxwell to his scalps. He hit the top of Maxwell’s leg stump, but the bails didn’t get dislodged. Maxwell was on zero at that point. He walloped an unbeaten 40 off 18 balls to close out the game that he had set up beautifully.

England's batting a concern heading into ODI World Cup

Conditions have been tricky, but unlike Australia the visitors have not been able to find a way

Across all the England cricket teams that have visited Australia this season they are currently 13-0 down with one match, the final ODI of the multi-format women’s Ashes, left to play.It has been a season of batting collapses for the visiting sides, the latest of which on Sunday saw Australia win the Ashes at a canter in Melbourne. Heading into the ODI World Cup in New Zealand it is a concern for Heather Knight’s team.England twice had it within their grasp to keep the series alive but fluffed their lines: they lost 6 for 26 in the second innings of a one-day style chase in the Test match, having played outstandingly to engineer a winning position, and in the first ODI could not hunt down 206 albeit on a tricky surface in Canberra. On Sunday, they produced their worst batting display of the tour as they subsided to 129 all out on what, again, was a pitch with some assistance but as Ellyse Perry later showed was possible to overcome with application.Related

Ellyse Perry's all-round genius carries Australia to Women's Ashes victory

Earlier in the tour, there were caveats after a very difficult build-up, then two of the T20Is being washed out, but as Knight noted after the ODI loss in Canberra the team has had long enough to shake off the rust now.”One of our top five or six needs to take responsibility a bit more often and make sure you are there at the end of the innings,” Nat Sciver said on Sunday.Alyssa Healy noted how batting conditions throughout the Australian summer have been tricky, but one of England’s better performances – in the first T20I in Adelaide – was not enough as the home side won with three overs to spare and Australia’s batters have been able to find a way in the first two ODIs.”The wickets here have been really conducive to seam bowling all summer,” Healy said. “Hasn’t felt like we’ve had a real flat track. The most pleasing thing for me personally has been getting ourselves out of a corner.”We’ve won games that we haven’t looked like we’ve been able to win…so the fact we are able to fight and scrap and work our way back into fixtures to win games with our backs against the wall has been really impressive. Leading into a World Cup it’s hugely important and will give us great confidence knowing that we can back our skills under pressure.”There were concerns about England’s batting raised at the end of the last home season when they were twice bowled out for under 200 against New Zealand although they rebounded to finish the series with 347 for 5. But there remain holes in the order. In 11 innings since the start of last year, Lauren Winfield-Hill is averaging 25.63 and has not reached fifty in ODIs since 2016. Wicketkeeper Amy Jones, while a useful contributor in the middle order, averages 27.40 since the start of 2021. The fact Sophie Ecclestone has twice shown up some of the top order is not ideal. There were also batting problems for the England A side in their concurrent series against Australia A with them bowled out in all three matches for 219, 132 and 211.So while the Ashes have been lost, the final ODI shapes as an important match for England as they try to find some batting confidence although with the game being played on the same pitch at Junction Oval that may not be easy. It’s also the last chance for an England cricket team to secure a victory this season.

Ricky Ponting on Virat Kohli: 'If I was India, I would keep pushing with him because I know the upside'

Former Australia captain believes Kohli should be kept at No.3 since “moving him around” could further unsettle him

Ricky Ponting – “If I was an opposition captain, I will be fearing playing an Indian team that has Virat Kohli in it”•BCCI

If India were playing their first T20 World Cup match – against Pakistan – next week, Ricky Ponting would play Virat Kohli at his usual No. 3 position despite his current form. Ponting, the former Australia captain and current Delhi Capitals coach, told that any opposition will be relieved if India decide to drop Kohli.”I think if I was an opposition captain or an opposition player, I will be fearing playing an Indian team that has Virat Kohli in it, more than I would be one that doesn’t have him in it,” Ponting said. “I know there have been some challenges for him, it’s been a difficult time. But every great player that I have seen in this game has been through it at some stage, whether that’s a batsman or a bowler, they have all been through it. And somehow, the best find a way to rebound and respond, and it’s only a matter of time before Virat does that.”Related

Kapil Dev: 'If Kohli isn't performing, you can't keep youngsters out'

Kohli has not scored an international century since November 2019, but it is his T20 returns that are the most concerning for India. In the last IPL, Kohli tried various things but ended up with a strike-rate of just 116, the lowest among batters who played at least 250 balls in the tournament. Ponting still felt the payoff, if it came off, would be bigger than any other replacement having a “reasonable” tournament.”The other thing you risk as well is, if you leave Virat out on the eve of a T20 World Cup, and someone comes in and has a reasonable tournament, it will be hard for Virat to get back in it,” Ponting said. “If I was India, I would keep pushing with him, because I know the upside. If they actually get him back confident and playing as well as he can, that upside is better than most. So I think if I was a captain or a coach around the Indian setup, I’d be making life as easy as possible for him to feel as comfortable as possible, and just wait for him to flick the switch and start scoring runs again.”Ponting said he would put all the eggs in the Kohli basket as opposed to trying someone else and bringing Kohli in only if his replacement fails.”Early in the tournament, for a first-round game, get him in nice and early, among the runs, and then hopefully by the end of the tournament you’ll have Virat Kohli back at his best,” Ponting said. “That’s the way I would look at it. I wouldn’t think about holding him back at the start of the tournament, with the thought that you might be able to bring him back towards the back end and have him peak. Tournament play isn’t like that. You need to work your way into the tournament, get some runs under your belt, and get some confidence and then be playing your best cricket at the back end.”However, Ponting did say pushing Kohli to open just so he finds his ideal conditions can be counterproductive. “You still got to find the best balance for the team,” he said. “You can’t just make the team all about one person.”They probably should be trying to find new ways to get him back into the form and help him out but that [giving him the opening spot] quite often comes at the expense of someone else as well. You are moving someone else around trying to find a spot for Virat. He has opened the batting, he’s batted at No.3 in the IPL in the last couple of years and done the same for India.”Moving him around, to me, will make him feel that people are worried about him, and he will be more unsettled. I will be going the other way. I’ll be telling him, ‘This is your spot, this is where you’re batting, it’s not going to change. Keep believing in yourself, keep putting in the hard work, keep understanding what made you the best player in the world for a number of years. Get back to those thoughts and the runs will come.'”

'We have to improve in every department to do well in Tests' – Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh captain wants to “revive Test culture in the country” and make sure the team starts winning more at home

Captain Shakib Al Hasan has said that Bangladesh didn’t show enough character against West Indies in the St Lucia Test. West Indies completed a ten-wicket trouncing of the visitors on the rain-interrupted fourth day. Bangladesh, six-down overnight, lasted just over an hour on the day, getting bowled out for 186 to leave the home side a target of 13 to complete the 2-0 series sweep.Bangladesh came into the fourth day on 132 for 6 after their top and middle order once again caved in against a disciplined pace attack. Shakib said that his side’s inability to hold on to their wickets showed a lack of game awareness at this level.Related

Domingo: 'Very disappointing' to see Bangladesh's 'basic errors'

Why is Bangladesh's batting on the decline in Tests?

Domingo: 'Bangladesh need players who are hungry for Tests'

“Considering this Test, we tended to lose wickets just before a drinks break, a lunch break or before the rain. If we didn’t lose these wickets, things would have been quite different. This is a part of game awareness. We weren’t as tough as we could have been, in terms of showing character in this Test match,” he said.Shakib felt that the Test players must work on their game before they meet India in December. Bangladesh go into their T20 season later this week, leading up to the T20 World Cup scheduled to begin in Australia in October. They will be playing T20Is against West Indies and Zimbabwe, before featuring in the Asia Cup and a tri-series in New Zealand before the global event.”We have to improve in every department to do well in Tests. It is good that a big gap is coming up [before we play the next Test]. Those who are interested in playing Tests can improve themselves during this time. We really don’t have a new set of players who will do well immediately after coming to this level.”If all of us, and a couple of the players from outside, can plan together, we might do well. Otherwise, we cannot expect a lot of changes if we continue to play the same way. We have to bring changes in many aspects, including our thinking.”Shakib believes the team must stop losing matches regularly at home to regain confidence. Bangladesh have now lost three Test series in a row: home series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka , before this away series against West Indies.”Teams are mostly underdogs on away tours. Take New Zealand, for example. They are losing abroad. England lost in the West Indies. Australia are losing when they play abroad. The same for India. Teams lose in India too.”So, we have to make sure that we don’t lose at home. Either we win or draw the matches. This improvement will help us when we are playing overseas. Maybe, we won’t win, but we will be competitive.”Shakib spoke of lack of Test culture in Bangladesh, something that head coach Russell Domingo had also pointed out last year. He said that the team need to plan early and execute well to revive the culture.”You can’t really blame the players. The system in our country is this. Did you ever see 30,000 people come to see a Test match? It happens in every game in England. We don’t have a Test culture in our country. But we can’t give up on it.”We have a responsibility to bring Test culture back to the country. We have to plan ahead, otherwise, we can’t get too far. I wouldn’t say that we don’t value Test cricket. But we don’t have good results. These two go hand-in-hand.”Shifting gearsA challenging series awaits Bangladesh as they begin their preparation for the T20 World Cup with three T20Is against West Indies, starting on July 2. After the T20 World Cup last year, where they were knocked out in the second round, Bangladesh went down to Pakistan 3-0 in November and drew 1-1 with Afghanistan.”It is an important series as far as our preparation for the T20 World Cup is concerned,” Shakib said. “We have the Asia Cup and the World Cup coming up. We don’t have much time left. Playing against West Indies will be a major challenge.”If we do well in the T20s here, it will help us go to Sri Lanka [for the Asia Cup] with a good mindset. The Asia Cup will be tough as we will take on India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.”

Ange likely to axe "fearless" in-form Tottenham player in surprise decision

da brwin: Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is now likely to axe an in-form player ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Manchester City this evening, as team news leaks before Spurs host the Premier League champions in north London.

Tottenham suffer 1-0 Crystal Palace defeat as Postecoglou aims to bounce back

da heads bet: Spurs were on a steady run of good form before their disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace over the weekend, beating West Ham 4-1 in a fierce London derby the weekend prior and clinching victory against Dutch giants AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Club chiefs convinced their "extraordinary" player is set to join Tottenham

There is a theory growing within the side.

However, Oliver Glasner managed to upset the apple cart by wrestling Palace’s long overdue first win in the top flight this season, in what was a step back for Spurs who were aiming to go on a winning run and put their abject 3-2 loss away to Brighton firmly behind them.

The Lilywhites’ loss at Selhurst is a stern reminder of Spurs’ shortcomings, with Postecoglou now aiming to bounce right back against a Man City side who pose one of the toughest tests in European football.

A plus-point for Postecoglou is that Man City have won just twice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since it’s opening, with both of those coming last season in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively.

The home advantage and backing of supporters could be crucial for Spurs, especially considering Postecoglou will be forced to cope without star forward Son Heung-min yet again.

Son missed Tottenham’s loss to Crystal Palace with a thigh injury and is set to be absent again tonight as Postecoglou aims to get him back for their home game against Aston Villa this weekend.

Wilson Odobert has also suffered a setback after recovering from a recent hamstring injury, which Postecoglou has described as “serious”.

“Sonny, no. Well he is almost fit but we will probably from our perspective aim him for the weekend,” said Postecoglou on Son’s fitness.

“We’re quite confident he will be right for the weekend. The only one missing out, which is a bit of a disappointment is Wilson [Odobert]. He’s had a setback during the week and it seems like it’s a serious one, so we’re waiting for more information. And then from the weekend everyone else is okay and Djed’s back training.”

Postecoglou set to drop Mikey Moore for Man City clash

As per GiveMeSport, another player who may not take part is in-form teenage winger Mikey Moore, who has really impressed since being handed regular starts.

The 17-year-old was handed a chance right from the off in each of Spurs’ last two games, putting in a Player of the Match display against AZ Alkmaar in particular, but it is believed Postecoglou is likely to drop Moore for Tottenham’s clash with Man City – in favour of the under-performing Timo Werner.

This could be seen as a surprise decision considering their contrasting fortunes, though Postecoglou apparently doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the youngster at this early stage of his career at N17.

“[He has] that young, fearless mentality and you never want to take that away from him,” said James Maddison to TNT Sports on Moore, following their win over AZ.

“He’s a young kid, a brilliant lad, a lovely boy. He takes in information, and he’s got bags of ability, so I’ll be there as an older player, hopefully with some wise words to help along the way.

“He’s got all the ability. It’s just about knuckling down and working hard, which he does to be fair to him.”

-O atual momento do clube é OK, nada espetacular.

Both Saurashtra and Madhya Pradesh to play Irani Cups in 2022-23

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy to be played between October 11 and December 2

06-Sep-2022

Madhya Pradesh are the defending champions of the Ranji Trophy•PTI

The BCCI has awarded both Saurashtra and Madhya Pradesh an opportunity to compete in the Irani Cup during the 2022-23 season.Saurashtra will play the season-opener against Rest of India from October 1-5 at Rajkot, their home ground, while Madhya Pradesh, winners of the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy, will play their corresponding fixture from March 1-5 in Indore. The board issued a circular to all state associations, with the calendar along with venues for the 2022-23 season. There had been some miscommunication earlier when it was assumed MP would play the season-opening Irani Cup.The squad had also begun their pre-season training, with special emphasis on red-ball cricket, on the assumption that they would be playing this fixture.Saurashtra were belatedly awarded the game they were denied in 2020, when they beat Bengal to clinch their maiden Ranji Trophy crown. They were slated to host the Irani Cup the following week, but the game was postponed indefinitely owing to the onset of the covid-19 pandemic that led to a nationwide lockdown in India.Meanwhile, Kolkata and Ahmedabad will host the knockout stages of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), respectively. SMAT, the domestic T20 event, will take place from October 11 to November 5, while the VHT one-day competition will run from November 12 to December 2.Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, Punjab and Jaipur will host the league-stage matches of the SMAT, while Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata and Ranchi will stage the VHT league fixtures. The BCCI is conducting a full-fledged domestic season in 2022-23 after truncated versions in 2020-21 and 2021-22 because of the pandemic. The season will begin with the Duleep Trophy, from September 8 to 25 across three venues – Coimbatore, Pondicherry and Chennai, while the Ranji Trophy – back in the home-and-away format, will be played from December 12 and February 20.
