If New Zealand, why not South Africa? Tamim banks on new-found belief to spur Bangladesh on

“Ten years ago, I would have said that we want to play good cricket. Now I will say that we want to win there, and we will do what we have to do to win”

Mohammad Isam09-Mar-2022Tamim Iqbal expects the Mount Maunganui Test win a couple of months ago to inspire Bangladesh when they travel to South Africa for a series of three ODIs and two Tests this month.Like in New Zealand before that win, Bangladesh have never won an international match against South Africa in South Africa – in fact, they have lost everything (six Tests, nine ODIs and four T20Is) but the one ODI that was washed out in late 2008 in East London. But Tamim is hoping that will change this time.”We don’t have a great record in South Africa but records can change,” Tamim, the ODI captain, said. “A great example is our Test win in New Zealand. We turned things around there after many years. We couldn’t win in 30-32 matches in New Zealand but the Test team changed that. I am hopeful this team will force the same change [in South Africa]. Belief makes a big difference.Related

“We will try to do the same in South Africa. We know it will be difficult since they are a very, very good team in their own conditions. Ten years ago, I would have said that we want to play good cricket. Now I will say that we want to win there, and we will do what we have to do to win. If we get the result, very good. If we don’t, we will work harder.”Tamim, who missed the tour of New Zealand because of an injury – and has scored 8, 12 and 11 in three ODIs against Afghanistan since coming back – said that he wanted help from the members of the ODI side who were in New Zealand, especially in terms of their mindset while on tour.”I wasn’t with the team in New Zealand, unfortunately. I want those who were in that squad, to speak about it,” he said. “Many of them are in the ODI squad, so they can talk about their thought process, and what they were thinking at the time to turn things around.”Since then, Bangladesh have beaten Afghanistan 2-1 in an ODI series at home [while the T20I series was split 1-1]. But their fielding, especially, has been poor, as they dropped seven catches in the five white-ball matches.”I am really worried about our fielding,” Tamim said. “There’s no place to hide with our fielding. If we want to do well in any format, fielding has to improve. We speak a lot about it, but fielding has put us in problem in the last few years. We have to find a solution.”Rajin (Saleh) did an exceptionally good job as our fielding coach against Afghanistan. He did everything possible to prepare us. We made the mistakes.”

“I am very happy that they are playing the full side. I think it is the best possible thing for us. We will play the best teams in the World Cup, so we must play against the best teams now. It will help identify our weaknesses”Tamim Iqbal on going up against a strong South Africa side in the ODIs

Tamim has been using the time between the two series to work on his game with Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh batting consultant who has identified the positioning of Tamim’s front foot as an aspect of his game that the batter needs to work on.”I have always loved practicing with him [Siddons]. I think he has great understanding of the game. I rate him highly,” Tamim said. “He is very honest. If I am doing something [wrong], he will tell me. You have to keep working on batting. Problems will keep cropping up, so you have to keep working. If he can make me 5% better this time, I will be happy.”Bangladesh are going to come up against an almost-full-strength South Africa side, which is only missing Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala, who have fitness concerns.”I am very happy that they are playing the full side. I think it is the best possible thing for us,” Tamim said. “We will play the best teams in the World Cup, so we must play against the best teams now. It will help identify our weaknesses. If we do well against them, it gives us a huge amount of confidence.”Bangladesh are scheduled to leave for South Africa on March 12. The ODIs will be played on March 18, 20 and 23, and will be followed by a two-Test series.

"Excellent" – Pundit reacts as Crystal Palace now eye new Eze-like signing

Pundit Carlton Palmer has been reacting to rumours of Crystal Palace eyeing up another Eberechi Eze-like signing in 2025.

As can be seen, Palace actually received more than they spent after cashing in on Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen, however, they have appeared to bolster the squad with players who have Premier League experience in Eddie Nketiah, Ismaila Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah.

More new additions could be on the way in 2025, though, with reliable reporter Alan Nixon recently claiming that Crystal Palace are interested in signing Millwall attacker Romain Esse.

The 19-year-old has progressed through the Lions’ academy in recent years and has now made 48 senior appearances at The Den, scoring on four occasions, two of which have come during the current campaign.

Palmer reacts as Palace eye move for Esse

Talking to Football League World, Palmer gave his thoughts after hearing of Palace’s interest in Esse. He labelled the Millwall teenager as “technically very good”, “direct”, “versatile” and “pacey”, sighting Palace’s move for Eze when it comes to signing Championship gems and developing them.

“Crystal Palace are the latest Premier League club to be monitoring the situation on Millwall’s talented frontman Romaine Esse. He’s naturally a right-winger but can play anywhere across the front, he’s had an excellent start to the season which is causing Premier League clubs to look at the talented 19-year-old.

“Palace have a habit of signing and developing good young players, look at Eze and Michael Olise and they buy these players, develop them and sell them on for big money.

“If he’s sold, Millwall would get a sell-on clause and that would be vital. Obviously when you develop young players, it’s good to see when they come through – especially the likes of Esse, who has came through the youth academy and worked his way up the ranks.

“He’s shown ability throughout his earlier [youth] career, he’s a very important part of Millwall’s first team squad, he’s technically very good and he’s a versatile player. He’s very direct and pacey.”

Palmer clearly likes what he has seen in Esse, so who knows, a move to Selhurst Park from Millwall could be just what he needs at this stage of his career, making a January or summer deal in 2025 one to watch.

Georgeson withdraws from Ireland contract to achieve 'ambitions of playing for New Zealand'

Two-year deal with Cricket Ireland, inked earlier this month, terminated by mutual consent

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2022Luke Georgeson, the former New Zealand Under-19 player who signed a two-year central contract with Cricket Ireland (CI) earlier this month, has now withdrawn from the full-time agreement and will no longer be in contention for an Ireland call-up.In a statement on Friday, CI said that the contract had been terminated “by mutual consent”. “Georgeson has informed Cricket Ireland that he will be withdrawing from the full-time contract after reconsidering his future playing options,” the statement said. “Georgeson, 23, will remain in Belfast and play for club side CSNI this summer, but will no longer be in contention for an Irish call-up.”Georgeson, who had turned out for New Zealand in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, had a contract with Wellington in New Zealand’s recent domestic season, but chose to commit his future to Ireland after spending last summer playing for Northern Knights in the inter-provincial set-up.”The basis of this decision is that I have come to a clearer understanding that I still harbour ambitions of playing for New Zealand, and I underestimated how much I want to realise this dream until recent days,” Georgeson said. “I would like to take the opportunity to thank Cricket Ireland for their effort and commitment to me over the past year. I have been overwhelmed by the understanding and support shown by all those who have been a part of this decision. It is not one that has been made easily, and I am truly grateful for the support I have been shown throughout.”This, however, will not conclude my involvement in Irish cricket. I am passionate about cricket in Ireland and the NCU [Northern Cricket Union], and I will endeavour to stay involved and make a difference wherever I can. I appreciate everyone’s understanding about this decision.”Andrew White, chair of the national men’s selectors, who revealed that Georgeson had met him as well as other members of the Ireland senior team management, said, “We are obviously disappointed that Luke will no longer be making himself available for Ireland – he is a talented player and was a firm part of our plans going forward.”An Irish passport-holder, Georgeson batted in the middle order for the Knights last year, but opened for Wellington throughout the New Zealand summer. The CI statement added, “Following consultation between Cricket Ireland and Northern Knights’ selectors, the Knights will shortly select a replacement member to join their core squad of 12 to replace Georgeson, which will be announced in due course.”

Tottenham’s lacklustre record defending dead-ball situations was brought to the forefront yet again after Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes’ winning header from a corner became Spurs’ 10th goal conceded from a set-piece since Postecoglou took charge last year.

Mikel Arteta’s side also travelled to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium without a host of key players in club captain Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Declan Rice, but the home side ultimately couldn’t take advantage of their weakened opponents.

Brennan Johnson proved ineffective for Spurs out wide, among others, with Postecoglou’s side failing to break down a resolute Arsenal despite taking control of possession and pressuring the Gunners on many occasions.

A win at Coventry tonight, which could spark a potential cup run, would be the right remedy – and Postecoglou has already made a promise to Tottenham supporters on their ambitions for silverware this season.

“Usually in my second season I win things,” Postecolgou told Sky Sports in August (via The Metro).

“That’s the whole idea. First year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. Hopefully the second year is going onto win things.

“Of course it’s easier said than done, particularly in the Premier League and the competition we’re in. That’s always the way I’ve looked at it, is that the second year you should be in a position where you can push on, depending on how the first year has gone. Last year we had some really good moments, obviously we had some tough moments. I think we learnt as much from the tough moments as we did from the good stuff and hopefully that means we’re in a good place.”

Postecoglou could be about to hand Archie Gray full Tottenham debut

Chairman Daniel Levy backed Postecoglou with key new additions in the summer, like highly-rated English sensation Archie Gray, who joined the club from Leeds United in a deal worth £40 million.

Spurs rejected the chance to sign Conor Gallagher, who was heavily linked with a move to north London, in favour of striking a deal for Gray instead. The teenager was a star player for Leeds last season, most often dazzling at right-back, but he’s yet to start for Spurs since swapping Elland Road for N17.

According to GiveMeSport, that may be about to change, as Postecoglou could hand Gray his full Tottenham debut by starting him against Coventry this evening.

The 18-year-old has made two cameos off the bench spanning 30 minutes so far, but tonight could be a golden opportunity for the midfielder to play his first full 90 for the club.

Liverpool enquire over another cheap but "unbelievable" player after Chiesa

Liverpool have enquired about the possibility of signing another bargain attacker after the arrival of Federico Chiesa, according to a new report.

It has been a frustrating summer for Liverpool supporters at times, as the club have taken their time to get their transfer business underway. However, with two days of the window left, it appears they are now starting to get very busy.

Liverpool have finally got their first transfer through the door under manager Arne Slot, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joining the club in a £30 million deal from Spanish side Valenica. But he doesn’t look like he is the only signing arriving at Anfield in this transfer window, as Liverpool now close in on the signing of Juventus winger Federico Chiesa. The Italian is said to have agreed a four-year contract with the Merseyside club, following talks earlier this week.

It has since been reported that Liverpool and Serie A giants Juventus have agreed a meagre £10 million fee, with £2.5m in add-ons, that will see Chiesa swap Turin for Merseyside. The 26-year-old has been with Juventus on a permanent basis since July 2022, but he did spend time on loan with the Italians from Fiorentina in 2020 to 2022.

As well as looking to wrap up a deal for Chiesa, another player who could be on Liverpool’s radar is Crystal Palace winger Ebere Eze. Palace are reportedly expecting offers for their talisman between now and the end of the transfer window, and Liverpool are said to be weighing up a move for the youngster, who impressed in Euro 2024 with England.

But while Eze may be an option for Liverpool, the Premier League side are also said to be considering another shrewd purchase after signing Chiesa, who could be even cheaper than the Italian.

Liverpool make an enquiry for Rayan Cherki

According to L'Equipe, relayed by Get Football News France, Liverpool have made an enquiry over the possibility of signing Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki. The 21-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with the French side, and Lyon are looking to move him on as they do not want to let him go for free.

The Ligue 1 side could be looking to offer Cherki a new contract as we enter the closing stages of the transfer window, but as it stands a fee of £12.5m or potentially even less would be enough tempt them into using him to balance the books. PSG had agreed a fee to sign the player, only for Cherki to pull out of the deal as he wanted to join Borussia Dortmund instead, but the German side have yet to table a formal offer.

Lyon's Rayan Cherki

The report states that Liverpool have made an enquiry over a possible purchase, although it hasn't gone any further than that at this stage, so it's unclear whether he's seen as an alternative or an addition to Chiesa.

The 21-year-old has earned some rave reviews in France, as he was described by pundit Frank Leboeuf as being “unbelievable” and “one of the best players on Earth”.

There have also been a number of exits to balance the books at Villa Park, with Douglas Luiz joining Juventus and Moussa Diaby signing for Al-Ittihad. As a result, a replacement for Diaby appears to be needed, and it has been claimed that an offer has been submitted to Hoffenheim attacker Maximilian Beier, although there is competition from Chelsea.

Joao Felix of Atletico Madrid has also been heavily linked with a move to the Midlands, however, an alternative target appears to be former Villa star Jack Grealish, with a loan-to-buy deal with Manchester City mooted in the media. However, it appears as if Villa may have a real chance of signing Felix, going off a new claim.

Joao Felix to Aston Villa transfer update

The latest transfer update has come from The Boot Room, who state that Aston Villa are battling Benfica to sign Felix this summer. Villa have held talks over a permanent transfer, something which Atletico Madrid are willing to entertain. It is added that ‘Felix is keen to link up with Villa and he has held talks with Emery and Monchi’.

However, Villa may need to act fast, as the lure of returning to Benfica could also appeal to Felix, who is also being linked with a return to Barcelona on loan.

Aston-Villa-Joao-Felix

Previously named as Emery’s “dream” target, it looks as if Villa are in a good position to get a deal done for the £96,000-a-week forward, with the funds also there following Diaby’s move to Saudi Arabia.

Should a deal go through, Villa would be getting a forward who is still just 24 years of age and has plenty of experience in the Champions League. The Portugal international also has knowledge of the Premier League after a loan spell at Chelsea and has played as a centre-forward, second striker, left winger, right winger and attacking midfielder throughout his career.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Felix was also hailed by Gary Neville after his goal against Manchester United. “He’s a proper player, him. Just the way he moves with the ball looks so different, so in control. Class – real class. He’s got options in front of him but he thinks 'no, I’m going to go on my own', and he just fires it past David de Gea. Really good finish."

Sunderland looking to sign “poacher” who could shine with Clarke

Sunderland will have everything crossed this off-season that they can somehow keep hold of Jack Clarke ahead of the coming campaign, valiantly fending off any suitors interested in their star-man's services as a positive Championship term awaits.

Regis Le Bris will know, even if Clarke does stay put, that the Black Cats need a sprinkling of firepower in the forward positions, having been far too goal-shy last campaign away from the exploits of the ex-Leeds United winger.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

That much-needed quality to lead the line looked to be arriving into the building in the form of SM Caen sharp shooter Alexandre Mendy, but that move has gone somewhat awry, as other options are now eyed up this summer by the Wearside outfit.

Sunderland looking at cheap Mendy alternative

As per a report by Slovenian outlet Planet Nogomet, with this development being further relayed by the Roker Report, Sunderland are one of a number of clubs expected to pounce on Bordeaux's unfortunate bankruptcy as a move for Slovenian striker Zan Vipotnik is considered.

Whoever does end up winning his services, with Hadjuk Split, FC Twente and VFL Bochum named as other interested parties from across Europe, the lucky winner would be gaining Vipotnik for free after his contract with the ex-Ligue 2 team was torn up after the club went out of business.

Slovenia striker Zan Vipotnik.

The Slovenia international will be on the hunt for a new place to call home, therefore, with Sunderland hopeful he will pick England over the other array of potential next onward destinations.

With Mendy's move to the Stadium of Light stuck on hold at this moment in time, the Black Cats might see this swoop as an easier one to get over the line, owing to the 22-year-old's new free agent status.

Starring for Bordeaux before their recent demise, Vipotnik had also managed to garner a reputation for being a reliable striker in the same league as Mendy, but could be snapped up for £0 away from his fellow attacker's bold £4.2m price-tag.

What Vipotnik can offer Sunderland

Le Bris clearly wants to add in top talents from his native country this summer, having come up against these stars in the flesh when he was still Lorient manager, allowing him to get a flavour for how they perform before now swooping in.

Vipotnik managed to bag ten goals last season in all competitions for his now-defunct club, taking his overall career goal tally to 44 strikes from 122 games playing in his home country of Slovenia and beyond.

There is definitely room for the in-demand 22-year-old to develop further and hone in on his skills in front of goal too, with 16 big chances missed for Vipotnik last season, with ten goals an impressive tally overall from just 25 starts.

Only needing 14.2 touches per clash in order to regularly make an impact, the free agent forward could live more up to his billing as a "poacher" – as was handed to him by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – surrounded by the likes of Clarke feeding him chances on Wearside.

The goal above from Nazariy Rusyn last campaign showcases Clarke at his explosive best darting forward for the Black Cats, twisting and turning shirts attempting to shut him out, before finding his Ukrainian teammate to tap home.

Vipotnik could well excel playing in a similar manner, with Rusyn only finding the back of the net a meagre two times last campaign in the second tier, which has left Sunderland hunting for a potent striker.

Sunderland linked striker Alexandre Mendy in action for Guingamp.

This means that Clarke could help Vipotnik to shine by creating high-quality chances for the forward to find the back of the net, which is backed up by his 12 'big chances' created in the division last term.

Mendy's 22 goals in Ligue 2 could well have filled that gap, but with that move taking an age to get over the line, seeking out a cheap alternative in Vipotnik could prove to be a shrewd move to ensure that the Black Cats bolster their strike force before the window slams shut.

Move over Mendy: Sunderland could reignite interest in exciting attacker

Sunderland could well have other striker targets in mind away from Alexandre Mendy.

Advanced talks: West Ham close to signing £15m "monster" who Carragher loves

West Ham United are in advanced talks to sign a £15m "monster" who has been praised by Jamie Carragher in the past.

West Ham want more signings in defence and attack

The Irons and technical director Tim Steidten have already completed three summer signings, with teenage winger Luis Guilherme arriving from Palmeiras, goalkeeper Wes Foderingham joining on a free transfer after his contract expired at Sheffield United and Max Kilman the most expensive of the three, coming in for £40m from Wolves.

It doesn’t look as if the trio will be the only new arrivals, though, with Steidten living up to his promise of a busy summer window earlier in the month, saying at Lopetegui’s first press conference as West Ham boss: “I can’t tell you specifics, but it will be a busy summer for us for sure. The owner and the board have done a really good job over recent years, so we’re in good shape financially. We’re trying to build up the squad. We’re not limiting ourselves to one position – we’re looking at all areas.”

Bid ready: West Ham now preparing offer to sign ex-Tottenham forward

It’s worth more than £16m.

ByCharlie Smith Jul 17, 2024

After Guilherme, Foderingham and Kilman, West Ham appear to be eyeing more signings at the back and in attack. Recent claims have suggested that West Ham have agreed a loan with an option-to-buy deal for defender Jean-Clair Todibo, however, the Frenchman has his heart set on a move to Juventus instead.

In the final third, a £25m offer has been submitted for Alexander Sorloth, whereas the club are reportedly closing in on signing Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, who has said yes to the Irons after the club tabled a long-term London Stadium contract.

Alongside another winger and centre-back, a new right-back is seemingly required after Ben Johnson left for Ipswich Town, leaving Vladimir Coufal as the only senior option available to Julen Lopetegui.

Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been heavily backed to become the new first-choice right-back at the London Stadium, with an enquiry made earlier this month. Now, a new update has emerged, and it is a positive one for Irons supporters wanting to see the Englishman in a Hammers shirt.

West Ham in advanced talks to sign Wan-Bissaka

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham are in advanced talks to sign Wan-Bissaka, with conversations at the final stages. The Red Devils want £15m for the full-back, who is open to making the move to the Hammers, although personal terms are yet to be agreed.

The £15m asking price isn’t a problem for the Irons and with a green light from the player and talks advanced, a move could gather pace relatively quickly.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Manchester United

Should West Ham sign Wan-Bissaka, they’d be getting a defender called "a real monster in defence" by the Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig and who Jamie Carragher dubbed as the "best one-on-one full-back in the world", saying back in 2020: “I actually think Wan-Bissaka is the best one-on-one defender for a full-back in the world. I don’t think anyone would get the better of him.”

Wan-Bissaka responded to that praise last year, saying: “I try not to [take notice of praise] but sometimes you just run into it. “For me, it’s good to see how people notice the improvement this season and the work that’s been put in so it’s always a nice feeling.”
