New Zealand in sight of a rare win

Stats highlights from Hamilton where the hosts are in sight of a rare Test win against South Africa

Shiva Jayaraman28-Mar-201715 Number of consecutive Tests New Zealand have gone without a win against South Africa. Their last win had come in Auckland in 2003-04. Since then New Zealand have lost ten matches and drawn five against South Africa. Should the hosts win this Test, it will be only their third win in 28 matches against South Africa since the latter’s readmission to Tests.127 The lowest target defended successfully in the fourth innings at Seddon Park. The home team had been bowled out by Pakistan for 93 in the fourth innings on that occasion. Apart from that instance though, in the other five instances when teams have successfully defended targets at this venue, the targets have been 300 or more. Teams have been bowled out in the fourth innings at this venue six times. Only two of those have been scores less than 150 runs.170 New Zealand’s previous highest individual score at home in Tests against South Africa – by Scott Styris in Auckland in 2003-04. Kane Williamson’s 176 in this Test bettered that.5 Number of 150-plus scores by Kane Williamson in Tests; among New Zealand batsmen, only Brendon McCullum has made more. Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor have 4 each.4 Number of times a New Zealand Test innings against South Africa has lasted more deliveries than the 162.1 overs played by the hosts in their first innings. Only two of these instances have come since South Africa’s readmission to Tests.3 First-innings lead bigger than 175 runs taken by New Zealand in Tests against South Africa. The last time New Zealand took a higher lead was in Auckland in 2003-04 when the led by 299 runs at the end of the first innings.2003-04 The last time New Zealand had four or more fifty-plus scores in a Test innings against South Africa, which was in the Auckland Test. Overall, this is only the sixth time that New Zealand have had four or more of their batsmen getting fifty-plus scores in an innings in Tests against South Africa.2012 The last time three South African pacers have had to bowled 30 or more overs each in a Test innings. Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel had sent down 30, 30 and 31 overs respectively in Australia’s first innings at the Gabba. Philander, Morkel and Kagiso Rabada clocked in more than 30 overs each in New Zealand’s first innings in this Test.71.4 Number of wicket-less overs bowled by Philander since his last wicket in this series – Jeetan Patel in the Dunedin Test. Before this series, Philander had taken 32 wickets at just 15.53 in six matches against New Zealand. He has two wickets in this series at an average of 101.50.5 Number of away Test series Hashim Amla has now gone without making a hundred. His last hundred outside South Africa came in Colombo in 2014 when he made an unbeaten 139. Since that match, Amla has made only 389 runs in 20 innings at an average of 20.55. In a period of five years up until the Colombo Test in 2014, Amla had made 2249 runs at 77.55 with ten hundreds and five fifties in 19 away Tests.

Sheffield United now plotting move for £8,500-a-week goalscoring defender

Sheffield United are now plotting a move for a “clinical” Championship star to strengthen a priority position, according to a recent report.

    Blades pushing for promotion

Chris Wilder’s side are faring very well in the Championship as we approach the end of the January transfer window, after a solid recent run of form. The Blades are in a very strong position to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, and they are trying to capitalise on the opportunity that has presented itself by making signings capable of aiding their promotion push.

The main aim this month has been to strengthen in attacking areas, and it is job done for Wilder on that front, having moved swiftly to bring in Ben Brereton Diaz and, most recently, Tom Cannon.

Sheffield United reach "full verbal agreement" to sign "brilliant" defender

The 27-year-old is aiming to move to the Championship before deadline day.

    ByDominic Lund Jan 21, 2025

As such, the United boss may turn his attentions towards reinforcing other areas of the squad, and Football League World report that signing a new defender is now a priority, in order to replace Harry Souttar, who suffered a season-ending injury in December.

Queens Park Rangers’ Jimmy Dunne has now emerged as a target for the Blades, with the defender out of contract at the end of the season, which means he could be available this month if Wilder pushes to get a deal done.

QPR are having a decent season themselves, now just four points off the play-offs, but they risk losing the 26-year-old for free in the summer if they don’t cash in this winter.

Queens Park Rangers'JimmyDunnecelebrates after the match

Although Jack Robinson has performed well in Souttar’s absence, Sheffield United are keen to bring in a replacement for the Leicester defender, and they are now plotting a move for Dunne.

Dunne could be the perfect Souttar replacement

Souttar was particularly impressive in the air during his stint at Bramall Lane, and there are signs the QPR defender could be a like-for-like replacement in that regard, having also displayed his aerial ability on a regular basis over the course of the past year.

As shown, Dunne is outperforming Souttar on almost every key defensive metric, so he could be the perfect replacement for the injured Australian.

Not only that, but the £8,500-a-week defender is also a threat on the front foot, having been lauded as “clinical” by journalist Sam Tabuteau at the end of December, and he now has four goals to his name in the Championship this season.

The Blades are already in a very strong position to seal promotion to the Premier League, but signing a top defender could help them get over the line, and Dunne is showing signs he could be the perfect addition to the squad.

Barcelona player ratings vs Leganes: Raphinha saves the day for lacklustre La Liga leaders as Robert Lewandowski goes missing and Lamine Yamal has rare off-night

Hansi Flick's below par Blaugrana side needed an own goal to see off struggling Leganes and maintain their title charge.

Barcelona beat Leganes 1-0 away from home on Saturday, thanks to an own goal forced by Brazilian talisman Raphinha. With their lead at the top of La Liga sitting at four points before kick-off, Hansi Flick's side started brightly as Robert Lewandowski sent a warning shot towards the Leganes goal early on, though the forward fired clear of the crossbar.

The hosts threatened despite their limited possession. Wojciech Szczesny had to be alert to deny Adria Altimira, who had been set up by a wonderful run and cut-back from Dani Raba only to strike straight at the Polish veteran.

Leganes couldn't stop the visitors creating chances, however, and Barca so nearly went ahead when Jules Kounde's effort was deflected towards the near post, but Marko Dmitrovic batted it behind for a corner. Lamine Yamal had been kept relatively quiet but soon sprung into action, striking the side-netting after drifting in from the right wing. His fleet-footed approach was matched by the exciting Raba, who led Leganes well going forward, while the hosts also looked dangerous when they tested Barca with a direct approach through the middle.

Yan Diomande had a penalty appeal waved away before the break while Raphinha had to produce a last-ditch challenge to keep the game goalless. Barca were left knowing a more lethal second half would be required to beat a side in danger of relegation, and in the opening minutes of the second half, Flick's team finally found the breakthrough.

Barca nicked the ball and Raphinha was afforded too much space to pick out a cross. Lewandowski was waiting to tuck it home, but Jorge Saenz slid in and ended up poking the ball beyond his own goalkeeper. Any slip-up would have offered inspiration to second-placed Real Madrid, but the goal seemed to ease Barca's tension in possession and punctured Leganes' building confidence.

It should have been 2-0 when Fermin Lopez escaped a few challenges and was bearing down on goal, but the Spaniard contrived to pull his shot wide. There were still some hairy moments at the other end of the pitch, with Inigo Martinez surviving a penalty appeal for handball.

Raba then had the ball in the back of the net for Leganes with a bullet header, but he had wandered clearly offside and the goal was disallowed. Barca were able to keep Leganes at a distance to see out the win, taking their lead at the top of the La Liga table to seven points before Real face Alaves on Sunday.

Chelsea now interested in Arsenal flop named among Arteta’s worst signings

Chelsea are interested in signing a former Arsenal defender who has been named as one of Mikel Arteta’s worst-ever signings, according to a new report.

    Chelsea latest transfer news

Despite recently recalling Trevoh Chalobah back from his loan spell at Crystal Palace, Chelsea are still thought to be in the market for a new defender this month due to injuries to both Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.

Fofana is expected to miss the remainder of the season having suffered a hamstring injury against Aston Villa last month, while Badiashile is also set to be out until at least February with a similar issue.

Caught Offside have recently reported that Chelsea are actually favourites to beat Arsenal and Bayern Munich to the signing of Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Chelsea now battling Arsenal in race to sign £68m "elite talent"

The Blues are among the favourites to secure the defender’s signature.

    1 ByDominic Lund Jan 19, 2025

The 21-year-old has a release clause of around £68 million, and though publicly the Portuguese club is insisting that this is paid, CaughtOffside claim that an offer of between £42 million to £50 million would be enough for Sporting to consider selling up.

Diomande, who was signed by Sporting while the now Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was in charge, has previously been described by scout/writer Jacek Kulig as an “elite talent”.

Chelsea make approach for Nuno Tavares

Another defender reportedly on Chelsea’s radar is Arsenal flop Nuno Tavares, who is currently on loan with Serie A club Lazio. Nuno Tavares joined the Italian outfit from Arsenal on loan with an obligation to buy, and according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Chelsea have now made an enquiry to Lazio about signing the Portuguese full-back.

The Blues are thought to be eyeing Tavares as a potential replacement for Renato Veiga should he leave Stamford Bridge, though Pedulla claims Lazio do not want to lose him.

Tavares struggled during his sole season at the Emirates in 2020/21, which saw him make 28 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners and score one goal. So poor were his performances, he is considered to be one of Arteta’s worst-ever Arsenal signings.

He’s been doing just fine in Italy, however, producing eight assists in 16 games, with Pedulla describing him as “the best left back in Serie A to say the least”. Lazio president Claudio Lotito has also heaped praise on Tavares, saying after he got two assists in a game against AC Milan earlier in the season: “Did you see how good he is? Nuno is an excellent player.”

If Chelsea do sign Tavares, they’ll be hoping they get the Lazio version, not the Arsenal version.

Brook's unbeaten century gives Sunrisers enough to trump Knight Riders

Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh gave KKR a chance after SRH put up the biggest total of the season so far, but they fell well short in the end

    Hemant Brar14-Apr-20232:28

Moody: Brook is a sensational talent in all formats

Harry Brook put behind a string of low scores with an unbeaten 55-ball 100 that included imperious hitting against pace and calculated strike rotation against spin. Aiden Markram was equally destructive, scoring 50 off 26 balls, as Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 228 for 4, the highest total of IPL 2023 so far.In response, Kolkata Knight Riders were 96 for 5 in the 11th over and in need of a miracle for the third game in a row. Nitish Rana’s 41-ball 75 kept their hopes alive, and with 58 required from the last three overs, they had Rinku Singh and Shardul Thakur – their miracle-makers from the previous two games – in the middle. Rinku fought hard with an unbeaten 58 off 31 but this time, it wasn’t to be.

    Brook shows his class

Coming into this game, Brook had 29 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 74.35. But one felt it was only a matter of time before he stepped up. On Friday, he started by hitting the first ball of the innings, bowled by Umesh Yadav, through the covers for four. He picked up two more fours in the over, pulling and scooping the bowler with little fuss.Against Lockie Ferguson, he exposed his stumps and dispatched a slow full toss to the cover boundary. He used the same strategy in Umesh’s next over with even better returns – two back-to-back sixes. Thanks to Brook, Sunrisers raced to 43 for no loss in three overs.

    Russell’s double-strike

Andre Russell hadn’t bowled this season so far, but it took him just one ball to make an impact. While Brook seemed unstoppable, Mayank Agarwal was struggling. Russell ended his agony by having him caught at short third for 9 off 13 balls. Rahul Tripathi hit a couple of fours but ended up top-edging a pull on the last ball of the over, giving Russell his second wicket.Aiden Markram took out his big strokes when Harry Brook slowed down•Associated Press

    Markram takes over

In their spinners, Knight Riders found a way to keep Brook quiet. In the first six overs of the innings, Brook had smashed five fours and two sixes. In the next eight – seven of which were bowled by the spinners – he didn’t find a single boundary, and instead focused on rotating the strike. That, though, didn’t mean Knight Riders could breathe easy. Markram took the baton and ransacked 42 off 22 balls against the spinners. He was severe on Suyash Sharma, in particular, taking him for two sixes and a four in the 12th over of the innings. In the next over, he hit successive balls from Varun Chakravarthy for a four and a six, the second shot bringing up his half-century off 25 balls. He tried to go big on the next ball as well but holed out at deep midwicket.

    Brook brings up his hundred

In the 15th over, Knight Riders re-introduced seam in the form of Ferguson. And Brook was back hitting boundaries, sending the bowler for four fours and a six in a 23-run over. Abhishek Sharma, meanwhile, took over Markram’s role and looted 32 off 16 against spin. He didn’t even spare Sunil Narine, hitting him for a four and a six in the 17th over. Those were the only two boundaries Narine conceded in his 4-0-28-0. Abhishek faced just one ball of pace, and was out on that.Brook kept picking up the occasional boundary, and moved to 95 off 52 with one over left. He was tiring by then but found just enough energy to hobble a couple of twos and a single to bring up his hundred.1:59

Did KKR get their plan for Narine’s overs wrong?

    Knight Riders start poorly

Bhuvneshwar Kumar dealt Knight Riders an early blow when Rahmanullah Gurbaz sliced the third ball of the chase to deep third. In the fourth over, Marco Jansen dented them further by removing Venkatesh Iyer and Narine off successive deliveries. Iyer, who came in as Impact Player for Suyash, hit a couple of boundaries before miscuing one to Markram at mid-on. Narine was cramped for room and was also taken at mid-on, leaving Knight Riders 20 for 3.

    Nitish Rana’s counter-attack

It looked like Knight Riders would surrender without a fight, but their captain Rana resuscitated the chase. In the sixth over, he hit Umran Malik for 4, 6, 4, 4, 4, 6. Not every shot came off the middle of the bat, but the 28-run over helped Knight Riders end the powerplay on a solid 62 for 3.N Jagadeesan gave Rana good support with his 36 off 21 before Mayank Markande had him caught at deep midwicket. Russell, who had walked off twice during the first innings with cramps, didn’t last long either, holing out in the legspinner’s next over.At that stage, Knight Riders needed 133 in 9.5 overs. Rana and Rinku kept the fight on, adding 69 in 6.2 overs for the sixth wicket. The pair was also helped by some lapses in the field – both Rana and Rinku were dropped once each, and later, Thakur was dropped twice. With 70 needed from 23 balls, Rana got two full tosses in a row from T Natarajan. He smashed the first one for a six but ended up hitting the second to sweeper cover, where Washington Sundar held on to the chance.Rinku hit three fours off Natarajan in the 19th over to reduce the equation to 32 needed off six, but as Rana himself said after the game, miracles don’t happen every game.

Robertson upgrade: Liverpool want "one of the best left-backs in the world"

Anfield might have seen sweeping structural changes enforced this summer, but very little has been tweaked within the Liverpool first-team squad.

Various bits of fat were trimmed, but Federico Chiesa has been the only signing to have played for the Reds this season – and his injury issues have left him with merely three appearances to date.

It’s hardly been detrimental. Liverpool have been brilliant under Arne Slot, smashing past opponents to claim the top spot in the Premier League and Champions League tables, through to the last eight of the Carabao Cup too.

Slot’s tactical nous and disarming demeanour have worked a treat for Liverpool in the wake of Jurgen Klopp’s departure. The Dutch boss has been loath to enforce changes, but there’s one area that has seen two players jockey for the number one spot: left-back.

    Liverpool's left-back tussle

For what seems like the first time since Andy Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in a deal worth around £10m, his number one spot on the left side of the backline is under threat.

    Andy Robertson and Arne Slot

Kostas Tsimikas, 28, has been happily playing second fiddle since arriving just over three years ago and has been an able deputy throughout, posting 17 assists across 97 outings.

But Robertson was embroiled in suffering across the 2022/23 campaign, along with his teammates, and was beset by more trouble last season, injuring his shoulder on international duty in October and failing to recover his finest form.

The 30-year-old Robertson has been a stalwart for Liverpool, but Slot seemingly isn’t the biggest fan and appears to be sending out probes ahead of anticipated transfer activity in 2025.

    Liverpool eyeing new left-back

As per a recent report from Football Insider, Liverpool have joined Manchester United in weighing up a move for Fulham’s Antonee Robinson.

The USMNT international has been a core part of Marco Silva’s success over the past few years in the Premier League and, aged 27, has built up the experience to make a positive impact at a top-performing club.

A separate report commenting on the Red Devils’ interest reveals that Fulham are willing to field offers worth £40m for the dynamic left-back, and this might be worth the money for a Liverpool side already flying high.

Why Antonee Robinson would be a Robertson upgrade

Robertson is keen to prove the doubters wrong once again, and in fairness, the Scotland skipper is still one of the finest full-backs in the world, even if there are signs of regression.

    Liverpool defender Andy Robertson

Is it so hard to recognise that a player of unceasing energy might splutter after many years of service in a full-throttle Klopp system? Liverpool writer Leanne Prescott once hailed the Scotsman as a “Duracell Bunny”, but all batteries run out of juice at some stage.

Robinson isn’t quite a new kid on the block, but the 27-year-old is currently operating at the height of his game and has only played 261 senior club matches across his career. Robertson, in comparison, has played 514 – with only 45 coming since the start of last season.

The Fulham man’s performances have led pundits such as Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley to hail him as “one of the best left-backs in the world”, with others, like analyst Ben Mattinson, claiming that the North American ace is a full-back with “insane defensive numbers and anticipation.”

As per FBref, Robinson ranks among the top 4% of Premier League full-backs this season for assists and carries into the penalty area per 90. Praiseworthy stuff. However, he also ranks among the top 6% for tackles and interceptions won and the top 9% for aerial duel success rate.

It’s quite clear that Robinson is operating at a brilliant level, and that he might be the missing piece in Liverpool’s puzzle. The Reds are thriving under Slot’s wing, sure, but there are always facets to work upon, to improve.

As the table above demonstrates, Robinson is outperforming his positional peer across a range of key metrics this season, having been far more aggressive in defensive phases and more accurate still.

Furthermore, the west Londoner is actually seeing more of the ball than Robertson despite playing in a team that enjoys less possession and control. This is largely down to his mobility, performing 1.1 dribbles per match compared to his Liverpool counterpart’s 0.2.

    Fulham defenderAntonee Robinson.

While Robertson has been marginally more creative than his counterpart, it’s important to remember that Fulham, impressive though they have been, do not operate in the same realm as Slot’s rampant Reds.

And still, Robinson has outstripped the Scot. Given the quality of Liverpool’s rivals in England’s top flight, it’s vital that means of improvement are uncovered and pounced upon, lest stagnancy take hold and fellow Premier League heavyweights enter the ascendency.

The fate of Trent Alexander-Arnold on the opposite side of Slot’s backline is bound to conjure up the most deafening noise from a transfer perspective, but keep an eye on the left flank; Robertson is still an excellent player, but Robinson is showing every bit the signs of superiority right now.

If Liverpool are to create a dynasty under their new boss, perhaps this might be the move to go for, completing the strength of the left side.

Hundred team-by-team previews: Southern Brave, Birmingham Phoenix the teams to catch

Tim David (Southern Brave)One of the most talked-about players in the Australian game at the moment with all eyes on whether he gets a place in the T20 World Cup squad. A strong return for Brave will keep that bubbling ahead of decision day in mid-September. Made two appearances last season.Nathan Ellis (London Spirit)Won Hampshire the Blast title twice, holding his nerve in extraordinary scenes after being called for a no-ball, to cap a tournament where his death bowling stood out. Making a strong push for the T20 World Cup squad, which he has spoken about after his late call to the Hundred to replace Riley Meredith.Josh Inglis (London Spirit)The wicketkeeper-batter made 173 runs at a strike-rate of 136.22 for Spirit last season and this time will take over from Glenn Maxwell when he leaves for international duty having himself not been included for the ODIs.Glenn Maxwell (London Spirit)Will be one of the headline overseas names and is a player capable of winning white-ball matches off his own bat, regardless of how many balls are involved. However, he will be one of the Australians leaving early for international duty.Ben McDermott (London Spirit)McDermott finished the T20 Blast for Hampshire very strongly, producing the top score in the final, after being picked as a Hundred wildcard. Likely to be Spirit’s wicketkeeper.Kane Richardson (Birmingham Phoenix)No longer holds a CA contract but remains part of the white-ball plans, although may start to face pressure from Ellis so a strong Hundred could be useful for him ahead of T20 World Cup selection.Daniel Sams (Trent Rockets)Picked up as a wildcard, Sams’ power with the bat could be as valuable as his left-arm pace bowling. During the T20 Blast for Essex he struck 71 off 24 balls against Sussex. Was a reserve at last year’s T20 World Cup and remains on the fringes of the team.Marcus Stoinis (Southern Brave)Stoinis had his Sri Lanka tour cut short by a side injury so this tournament will be his return to action ahead of the Australian season. Has become a finisher in Australia’s T20I side but opens in the BBL so it will be interesting to see where Brave use him. Won’t be available all tournament.Ashton Turner (Manchester Originals)Had his T20 Blast campaign with Durham interrupted by a dislocated shoulder and largely struggled to make an impact.Matthew Wade (Birmingham Phoenix)Enjoying a final flourish to his international career as Australia’s T20 finisher, and has stated the upcoming World Cup will be his swansong.Adam Zampa (Welsh Fire)One of the leading white-ball spinners in the world, the Hundred will be Zampa’s first outing since the tour of Pakistan having skipped Sri Lanka for the birth of his first child. Should be a key weapon in Fire’s attack before heading back to Australia to play against Zimbabwe.

Mustafizur shows he's no one-trick pony

Mustafizur Rahman’s record-breaking exploits were watched by his family all over Bangladesh, and it proved he was not going to be easy to read

Mohammad Isam21-Jun-2015Mustafizur Rahman’s family watched him intently from all over Bangladesh – his sister and cousins watched him from the Shere Bangla Stadium, his father and a couple of his brothers watched from his Tetulia village, and his eldest brother and mother from Khulna. At a newspaper office in Dhaka, one of his uncles watched with cheering colleagues. They celebrated every time he picked up wickets, some times even calling each other and celebrating his wickets on the phone.Mustafizur followed up his five-for on debut with a six-wicket haul on Sunday, becoming only the second bowler after Zimbabwe’s Brian Vitori to take five-fors in their first two ODIs. He took one more wicket than Vitori when he dismissed Ravindra Jadeja just after the long rain break, giving himself a unique place in history by getting 11 wickets. After Mustafizur had taken 5 for 50 in the first game, there were suggestions that India would read him better in the second. After all, all five wickets fell to offcutters. Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha had said Mustafizur would have to be on his A-game now that the world has seen a bit of his variation. On Sunday, however, Mustafizur brought out some of his other skills. Unlike in the first game, Mustafizur took a wicket in his first spell when he got Rohit Sharma with the angle he created. The second spell remained similar. He first got Raina to edge a cutter that bounced to the wicketkeeper, and MS Dhoni, with whom he had collided in the first game, was also sucked in by his slower delivery. Dhoni got out in the last over of the batting Powerplay, giving Bangladesh the advantage heading into the last 10 overs. What Mustafizur did next set his bowling in the second game apart from the first game. He surprised Axar Patel with a straight, quick delivery that struck him right in front. In the 42nd over, he got R Ashwin to edge behind with another offcutter. After the two-hour rain break, he came back and stung Jadeja with a full ball, quicker one again. He had completed a six-wicket haul, doing what he knows best, but the look of surprise on his face was the expression of someone who wasn’t expecting such results. All this time, his family kept calling each other. They wished they could have been together, watching him bowl in an international match against India, in front of a TV set without any power cuts. But they had to make do with wishing each other from long distances.According to his uncle Shariful Islam, deputy chief reporter of the , the family members tried their best to be in front of a TV. There was a power cut before the presentation ceremony in the first match, and his brother in Khulna called up Sharif to ask what Mustafizur was saying after winning the Man-of-the-match award.”We were not sure whether he would be playing the first game but when we heard that he got selected in the XI, we were anxious how he would do,” Shariful said. “When he was selected in the 14-man ODI squad, my brother who lives in Ohio promised to gift him an iPhone if he took three wickets. After he took the five-for in the first game, he immediately bought the phone and is now trying to find someone to send it to Dhaka.”When Mustafizur couldn’t get to play for a club in Dhaka, it was his brothers and uncles who communicated with the right people to get him a place or a trial in the pace foundation. Mustafizur, according to them, is grateful to have the full support of his family.
