Arsenal could be without "underrated" star for Shakhtar after injury update

Arsenal could be without an “underrated” member of their squad for tonight’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium, with manager Mikel Arteta looking to secure the Gunners’ second victory in Europe this season.

Arsenal vs Shakhtar Donetsk – match preview

Arteta’s side endured their first loss of the season last weekend, succumbing to a 2-0 loss away at Bournemouth, with star defender William Saliba given his marching orders on the half-hour mark.

The Gunners still need a out-and-out striker…

It was an afternoon to forget for Arsenal, who also watched Premier League title rivals Man City and Liverpool both secure 2-1 victories against Wolves and Chelsea respectively.

Ryan Christie’s 70th-minute strike undid all of their hard work defensively before a Justin Kluivert penalty 10 minutes from added time sealed their fate on the south coast.

Leandro Trossard was among Arsenal’s average performers at Bournemouth, but there were a few to choose from during a very difficult encounter. Arsenal will be desperate to get back to winning ways against Shakhtar this evening, but the Ukranian champions won’t be easy customers either.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has been sidelined by another long-term injury and is set to miss Shakhtar tonight, alongside the likes of Kieran Tierney, who has been named in their European squad list but remains absent with a hamstring problem.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s tie, Arteta drew attention to the number of absent players in Arsenal’s squad right now and their hectic fixture calendar as factors which helped cause their first loss of the season.

“Very clear, we put a bit of perspective into the situation,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Bournemouth.

“Obviously we want to win in any context. The reality is we made that context very difficult for ourselves. It was very difficult already with the amount of players that we had out, the schedule and the games that we had to play, but that’s the reality. For that game we didn’t get away with it. We could’ve done and it would’ve been a very different narrative. The reality is we didn’t and now the context is that we have lost one game in six months. Ok, now we have to win again, with the context that we have lost for the first time in six months, so let’s show it.”

Arsenal could be without Bukayo Saka for Shakhtar Donetsk clash

A real miss for Arsenal has been club captain and chief creator Martin Odegaard. Arteta confirmed before Bournemouth that Odegaard is in the latter stages of rehab and could be back fairly soon, but this evening’s fixture comes far too early.

Another big miss has been star winger Bukayo Saka, who was forced to miss their trip to Bournemouth last weekend after picking up an injury on international duty with England.

Ahead of Shakhtar this evening, Arteta confirmed that Saka is an injury doubt for Arsenal, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll feature.

“They are closer and both progressing really well,” said Arteta on Odegaard and Saka.

“Martin is still not fit. With Bukayo, let’s see how he feels today and in the training session that we have later on.”

Saka’s importance to Arsenal is crystal clear, and Arteta will be desperate to have him back fit and firing as soon as possible. The 23-year-old looks set to be a crucial role yet again this campaign, despite still being “underrated” by a lot of people according to journalist Charles Watts.

“I think Saka’s season has been absolutely underrated by a lot of people,” said Watts on Inside Arsenal earlier this year.

“I think he still had a really, really good season. His numbers are fantastic. He’s exceeded any other season, and this is one where you’d say he hasn’t always been at his best. He just gets booted around constantly, gets up, keeps going.”

Arsenal confirmed on Wednesday that U.S. international Jenna Nighswonger has joined the club on a permanent transfer from Gotham FC, with the fee reportedly around $100,000. The left-back will join a USWNT teammate in London, as American right-back Emily Fox has been with the Gunners since January 2024.

Nighswonger was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft and immediately became a key player for Gotham, winning a league title and the NWSL Rookie of the Year award in her debut season. On the international level, Nighswonger has made 18 appearances for the USWNT and was a member of the gold medal squad at last summer's Olympic games.

The Athletic reported Nighswonger's transfer fee.

I got more than I expected – Shastri

ESPNcricinfo spoke to Ravi Shastri, India’s new team director, after the conclusion of the tour of England, where MS Dhoni’s team lost the Tests, won the ODIs and then lost the only Twenty20 international

Nagraj Gollapudi08-Sep-2014Did you achieve the targets you had in mind when you started the role?
Absolutely. I got more than I would have expected. I say that only because of England’s record at home, not many sides have thrashed them 3-0 in a four-ODI series. It is a big achievement: from what they were mentally after the Test series defeat, and then to respond in that fashion made me feel proud. The players, including MS Dhoni, said your aura and positive outlook were the stand-out factors. How did you relax the dressing room?
Those factors defined me as a cricketer. I had to make it a place where the boys wanted to enjoy themselves. I was very clear when I said I am doing this job because I believe in them. And that was enough. As I got talking to them one on one, things started falling in place.Did you emphasise on individual sessions?
I had a plenty of one-on-one chats. Not sessions. I was not afraid to speak to a guy individually. Ground, bus, bar, dressing room, while eating – we were talking cricket. Communication is important. The advantage I had was I had watched these boys a lot. I told them I have watched more cricket than I have played. I have learned more about cricket after I stopped playing. One of the guys you focused on was Virat Kohli. Why?
About Virat, you knew it was due (the half-century in the Edgbaston Twenty20). The reason he did not perform earlier was a combination of mental and technical issues. You cannot get out to the same bowler in the same fashion five to six times. So there is an issue. He has to accept there is something wrong otherwise you cannot get out. And that had to be addressed, which we did. There are certain issues Virat understands he needs to work on, which he has been doing. Similar case with Shikhar [Dhawan].Shikhar batted magnificently – you would have seen the difference in him in the last three matches. He was technically and overall more fluent and confident. Mentally they were down after the Test series, but my job was to make them free. The good thing about this entire team was the willingness to listen and learn. No one works harder than these boys – they push themselves to the limit.

My job was to be with the team for the ODI series. They have won it. I want to let that sink. I will return to India and then think about the futureRavi Shastri

Why did you handpick these two players?
Not just these two. It was they along with Jinks [Ajinkya Rahane], [Suresh] Raina and [Ambati] Rayudu. And never forget Rohit [Sharma], whose half-century in the second ODI started off everything. If India goes to the World Cup with these players in form, it would be massive. How did you draw the line between where your job ends and Duncan Fletcher’s begins?
Fletcher is the coach: he looks after the handling of various things including little, little stuff. My experience comes into play from the outside – of having been there, done that. The fact that I watch so much is a massive help. And my personality is such if I feel like saying something I don’t hold back. I don’t care who it is.What are your observations about Fletcher, having worked with him for the first time?
He is tremendous. He would have done over a 100 Tests as coach, which is massive. He is technically very sound. He is a solid character. He is respected. He is a fatherly figure. I knew Fletcher from the 1983 World Cup. Then in 1984 I led an India Under-25 side to Zimbabwe, where he was my counterpart. So I was aware of his leadership qualities already. Also what made Fletcher’s job easier was having the trio of Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar as his assistant coaches. How did the team receive the three coaches who were brought in suddenly to replace the well-established pair of Joe Dawes (bowling coach) and Trevor Penney (fielding coach)?
The three coaches have been brilliant. Have you seen fielding like that in the Twenty20 at Edgbaston from India? We lost by three runs, but if we had not fielded the way we did, they would have gone over 200 runs. That was the biggest positive – the Indians were like tigers on the field. You field well and that is half the battle in limited-overs cricket. So the assistant coaches are in for the long term?
All three of them have done an excellent job in the short period they have been given. I have to go back and sit with the BCCI to discuss what will happen in the long term.A BCCI official was quoted in the media saying your report would decide Fletcher’s future with India?
Let the media say what they want. I have told you what I thought of Fletcher. I will go back and speak with the BCCI.Ravi Shastri: “The fact that I watch so much is a massive help. And my personality is such if I feel like saying something I don’t hold back. I don’t care who it is.”•Getty ImagesHow did you work with Dhoni?
When I first worked as a consultant with the Indian team during the 2007 Bangladesh tour, Dhoni was a key player already. Hence both of us know each other well. Our job was to make his life easier after the Test series. Our job was to take the pressure off him. Our job was to communicate more with the players, make them at ease, and give them the confidence.Dhoni said it a “good” tour overall for India. Do you agree?
He is not far from the truth. One of the things I had told the boys was, the reason I am here is you have shown me two things on this tour: first was India’s greatest ever Test win, at Lord’s during the second Test. I mean it. It was phenomenal. I also told them in the final three Tests you played spineless cricket. So for me a good team cannot be a bad team in two weeks. It cannot. It is a learning curve. Then to beat England in the ODI series the way India did was very good. And don’t forget, this is only the second time India have won a bilateral ODI series in England. In ODI cricket, bowling remains a weak area for India …
Death bowling, big time we need to improve on. It is a key area. For Dhoni to fall back on a spinner to bowl in the death overs becomes very risky. It is not yet a concern, but bowlers need to be aware about where to bowl and what to try in such a situation.Dhoni has pointed out consistently that India lack an allrounder in Tests. If you were a selector how would you solve this issue?
Someone like [Ravindra] Jadeja has to be backed and encouraged and told you can get runs on a regular basis. And I feel he is good in all three formats.About your future, strong voices within the BCCI want you performing the role for the World Cup. Are you happy to take it?
One step at a time. I was doing commentary during the Oval Test. This is my first, proper off day. I got a call immediately after the Oval Test asking me take over. Then your whole mind goes into a tailspin because you are supposed to suddenly do something different and massive. My job was to be with the team for the ODI series. They have won it. I want to let that sink. I will return to India and then think about the future.

Better than Aaronson: Leeds wanted to sign World Cup winner under Bielsa

Leeds United recorded their second successive win without conceding a goal in the Championship at the weekend as they beat Coventry City 3-0 at Elland Road.

The Whites had beaten Cardiff City 2-0 in the previous match and are now sitting fifth in the table after seven matches, having only lost once so far.

Daniel Farke is plotting a promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking after his side lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final in May, after they had finished third in the Championship during the regular season.

The German head coach was dealt a number of blows during the summer transfer window, though, as Georginio Rutter, Rennes, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville were all sold, to Brighton & Hove Albion, Rennes, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United respectively.

Their exits did open the door for Leeds to make signings of their own, however, and the likes of Largie Ramazani, Jayden Bogle, Manor Solomon, and Ao Tanaka, among others, came through the door.

Farke’s squad was also bolstered, in an attacking sense, by the return of Brenden Aaronson, who had spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Union Berlin.

Brenden Aaronson's strong start to the season

The USA international is looking to redeem himself at Elland Road, after scoring one goal in 36 games as Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in his first season at the club, and has plenty of work left to do.

The Whites reportedly splashed out a fee of £24.7m to sign the attacking midfielder from RB Salzburg in the summer of 2022 and is currently valued at just £9.2m by Transfermarkt, after difficult seasons with Leeds and Union.

This shows that Aaronson still needs to do more to raise his value and prove that it was not a huge mistake from the West Yorkshire outfit to bring him to England.

As you can see in the table above, the American dynamo has enjoyed a strong start to the Championship season since his return to the club this summer.

The 23-year-old talent, who still has plenty of time left to develop and improve at his young age, has contributed with five goals and ‘big chances’ created in five starts in the division so far.

This suggests that he is on the right track to redeeming himself at Leeds and, hopefully, there will be many more top-quality performances from the midfielder to eventually justify his huge price tag.

However, things could have been so different for the Whites if they had landed one of their top targets in one of the transfer windows before they signed Aaronson – Rodrigo de Paul.

Leeds United's interest in Rodrigo de Paul

In the summer of 2020, after Marcelo Bielsa had just led the club to the Championship title, it was reported that Leeds were interested in signing the attacking midfielder from Udinese.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

The Guardian claimed that Bielsa was very keen to bring the Argentina international over to Elland Road and that it would have cost the Whites a fee of around £31m to snap him up from the Serie A side.

Fabrizio Romano went on to report that Leeds were in talks with Udinese to secure an agreement for the central midfielder’s signature at the start of September, at the time that they were trying to sign Josko Gvardiol – now of Manchester City.

The Argentine wizard had produced seven goals, six assists, and 17 ‘big chances’ created in 34 appearances in the Serie A for Udinese during the 2019/20 campaign, which is why his club demanded a fee of £31m.

Ultimately, no club opted to move for de Paul that summer and former Leeds sporting director Victor Orta later revealed that the financial demands from the Italian side were too much for a team that had just been promoted from the Championship.

The Whites may feel like he is one that got away from them in the end as he has gone on to enjoy a great career in recent years and is now worth more than Aaronson in the present day.

Rodrigo de Paul's current market value

At the time of writing (1/10/2024), Transfermarkt currently has his market value at €30m (£25m) and that is around £16m more than Aaronson is currently worth.

De Paul produced an outstanding nine goals and ten assists in 36 Serie A appearances during the 2020/21 campaign, after Leeds opted against a £31m move for him, and earned himself a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish giants swooped in to secure his services for a fee of around £30m in the summer of 2021 and he has been a key operator for Diego Simeone in recent seasons.

He has racked up 11 goals and 17 assists in 142 appearances in all competitions for Atletico over the last three seasons or so, and has played at least 30 matches in LaLiga in all three of his full campaigns with the club.

During his time in Spain, de Paul also became a World Cup winner with Argentina in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and was a key player for his country.

As you can see in the table above, the central midfielder started seven times for Argentina in the finals and played 102 minutes in the final against France, as his side went on to win on penalties.

He has also won two Copa America trophies with his country, either side of winning the World Cup, and this means that the midfielder has won three major trophies for Argentina since Leeds opted against a deal for him.

De Paul has proven himself on the highest stage at international level and proven himself to be a reliable player for a huge European team, in Atletico, which is why the Whites may regret not pushing the boat out to sign him in 2020.

Week of last-over thrillers as Hanuma Vihari revives Abahani Limited

All the highlights from the past week at the Dhaka Premier League, including a career-best 141* from Mohammad Ashraful

Mohammad Isam06-Apr-2022

Hanuma Vihari hits out on his way to an unbeaten century for Abahani Limited against Brothers Union•BCB

A round-up of the third week of matches at the Dhaka Premier League. Five of these matches went down to the last over, with one veteran scoring a hundred and another bagging a four-wicket haul.Key takeaways
It is getting crowded at the top of the Dhaka Premier League points table with just over a week remaining for the first phase to end. Prime Bank Cricket Club and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club are on top with 12 points, closely followed by defending champions Abahani Limited and Legends of Rupganj, both on ten points each. The battle for the last two Super League spots are also heating up, with four teams – including the big-budgeted Mohammedan Sporting Club – vying for a place in the top six.Best batters
Hanuma Vihari, Abahani’s Indian recruit, struck a century and a fifty helping Abahani to three wins out of three this week. Brothers Union’s Mohammad Ashraful reached his career-best List-A score against Rupganj Tigers, making an unbeaten 141.Sikandar Raza and Fazle Mahmud also struck centuries, while Anamul Haque overtook Naeem Islam as the top run-getter, taking a 51-run lead.Best bowlers
Left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan climbed to the top of the wicket-takers’ charts this week, having taken 17 wickets at 22.00, with an economy rate of 4.73.Fast bowlers Rejaur Rahman Raja and Tanzim Hasan Sakib took five-fors during the week, while veteran Mashrafe Mortaza’s 4 for 38 helped Legends of Rupganj to a two-wicket win over Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity.Best match
Rupganj, Prime Bank, City Club, Sheikh Jamal and Shinepukur Cricket Club all won matches that went to the last over. Dramatic finishes all of them, but the most noteworthy one was the most high-stakes of all.In the battle of the two table-toppers, Sheikh Jamal’s Parvez Rasool battled brilliantly with the tail to take their 266-run chase against Prime Bank to the last over. He struck Robiul Hoque for a four and a six, before calmly taking two off the penultimate ball to bring home a one-wicket win.Points to ponder
Mohammedan’s eighth position on the points table after seven games belies the fact that they are a high-spending team that includes former Pakistan international Mohammad Hafeez. But they have had few in-form players, and even had to drop Soumya Sarkar for the Dhaka derby against Abahani. Soumya has so far made just 100 runs in six innings, while Shuvagata Hom, another domestic stalwart, has made 78 runs in seven outings.Players to watch
Akbar Ali’s 45-ball unbeaten 89 against Mohammedan was a thing of beauty. Since leading Bangladesh to the Under-19 World Cup title two years ago, Akbar has a massive following, and all the expectations that go with it. That said, this was only his fourth fifty in 68 games across formats, but then he often doesn’t get much time at the crease. In this game he did, and he struck six sixes and five fours in a reminder to the national selectors of his skills.

Yorkshire bring in Lord Patel of Bradford as chair after emergency board meeting

Two non-executive directors step down in wake of Roger Hutton’s resignation

George Dobell05-Nov-2021Yorkshire have appointed Lord Patel of Bradford as the club’s chair after a board meeting in the wake of Roger Hutton’s resignation on Friday, with two more non-executive directors also stepping down as part of the fallout around the handling of the report into allegations of racism by Azeem Rafiq.Yorkshire’s new chair knows more than most about the evils of racism. Growing up, Kamlesh Patel had to deal with the issue on a daily basis. Now he hopes that experience will serve him well in helping Yorkshire rebuild from perhaps the most serious crisis in its history – which included revelations that the panel cleared a player of wrongdoing over use of the word “P**i” on the grounds that it was banter between friends.”When I was a boy I developed into a very fast runner,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “Do you know why? Because gangs of skinheads used to delight in what they called P**i-bashing and you either learned to run or you took a beating.”So that word – the P**i word – has real meaning for me. I don’t need to be told it’s not banter.”Patel looks an astute choice. Born in Kenya, but brought up in Bradford when his parents moved to the UK about a year later, he knows the area, loves cricket and has copious experience. Having trained as a social worker, he was subsequently appointed as Chair of Social Work England and, before that, chair of the Mental Heath Act Commission. He has previously served on the board of the ECB as a senior independent director and had been invited to join the Yorkshire board in recent weeks anyway. His Asian heritage is, of course, also relevant. The club needs to prove to potential supporters, sponsors and players that it is committed to providing a more inclusive environment. Patel provides tangible evidence that times have changed. He experienced, he says, “loads” of racism while playing league cricket in the region as he was growing up. And while he believes the situation has improved somewhat, he is under no illusions.”I grew up at a time when you used to see those ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No dogs’ signs,” he says. “I experienced loads of racism playing cricket.”I think things have improved. But sometimes it just feels more subtle now. Sometimes I still wonder why, if they’re telling me I’m a rubbish bowler, they have to make mention of the colour of my skin at the same time.”He has a tough job, though. While non-executive directors Hanif Malik and Stephen Willis – the latter of whom was on the panel that helped produce the report into Rafiq’s allegations of racism – have stood down, the executive directors, notably Mark Arthur, the chief executive, and Martyn Moxon, the director of cricket, remain. While they do so, it is hard to see the club managing to improve its reputation.Crucially, Patel remains close to Colin Graves, too. Representatives of The Graves Family Trusts, which are owed around £18m by the club, have a veto on anyone joining the Yorkshire board. So while Graves, who is understood to remain loyal to Moxon and Arthur, may have been disappointed not to reclaim the chairmanship of the club, he has accepted the appointment of Patel.”The club needs to learn from its past errors, regain trust and rebuild relationships with our communities,” Patel said. “There is much work to do, including reading the panel’s report, so we can begin the process of learning from our past mistakes.”Yorkshire is lucky to have a vast talent pool of cricketers, and passionate supporters, from all of our communities and we must re-engage with everyone to make a better Yorkshire County Cricket Club for everyone.”

Wolves agree £10m deal to sign experienced international player

Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a transfer fee that will see them sign a Premier League player with international experience, according to a new report.

It has been a quiet transfer window for the Midlands side so far, but with just over two days left of the transfer window, things could soon start to heat up for Gary O’Neil’s side. Given that Wolves have started the campaign with back-to-back defeats, the club may be looking to do a bit more business as they try and get their season up and running.

Better than O'Shea: Wolves looking at late move for "dominant" defender

He is rumoured to have a release clause in his contract

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 28, 2024 Wolves transfer news

Wolves have so far brought three new players to the club over this summer, as well as adding Tommy Doyle, who spent last season on loan at Molineux, on a permanent deal. But O’Neil is probably looking to do more business, as he will want his squad as strong as possible as they look to build on last season.

One area that Wolves seem keen on adding to is their defence, as the Premier League side were keen on signing Dara O’Shea, but they have missed out on him, as he’s now joined Ipswich Town. But according to a fresh update, Wolves have now turned their attention to Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic. They are said to be ready to “step up” their pursuit of the international defender after missing out on O’Shea.

But as well as looking at improving defensively, Wolves are also said to be interested in signing former Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha. It has been claimed that Wolves have joined the race to sign the winger, who currently plays for Turkish side Galatasaray. Given that Wolves have sold Pedro Neto and Max Kilman, they have some money to spend, and they are now among the clubs interested in bringing Zaha back to the Premier League.

Wilfried Zaha scores for Crystal Palace against Brentford.

It is believed that Galatasaray are looking to get around £9 million for the former Manchester United and Palace winger, but first they've wrapped up a deal for a reinforcement at the back.

Wolves agree £10m fee for Sam Johnstone

According to Sky Sports News, Wolves have now agreed a £10 million fee with Crystal Palace to sign 4-cap England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

It is being reported that advanced negotiations are still ongoing, but the deal is getting closer to being completed. Wolves have reportedly faced competition from Southampton, but have won the race for the England international.

The 31-year-old has been with Palace since July 2022, when he joined the club on a free transfer from West Brom. He has gone on to play 34 times for the South London side, with 20 of those games coming last season in the Premier League, as he conceded 27 goals and kept six clean sheets in the process.

Johnstone was a standout performer during his time with West Brom, as he was described as being “sensational” by former England striker Gary Lineker back in 2021.

Having broken the deadlock for most titles with their arch-rival, Scorchers may have notched their sweetest triumph having been on the road for 50 straight days due to being shut out of Western Australia’s closed borders. They faced a depleted Sixers without openers Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards, who were ruled out with Covid-19, while batter Jordan Silk failed to recover from a hamstring injury sustained against Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday where he controversially retired hurt before the match’s final ball.A third bid for an exemption allowing Steve Smith to play was blocked by the BBL, while Jay Lenton, an assistant coach for Sixers, took the gloves for the second straight match.Scorchers, however, deserved the spoils having dominated all season in a golden summer for the franchise which also won the WBBL title two months ago.Evans and Turner rescue Scorchers
Scorchers endured a horror show early and their worst four-over powerplay of the season, which yielded just 14 runs on a tricky pitch. Worse was to follow with an uncharacteristically reckless Scorchers repeatedly throwing away their wickets under Marvel Stadium’s closed roof due to heavy rain in Melbourne.Mitchell Marsh, who came in with a hamstring niggle, struggled and didn’t get off the mark until his ninth delivery. He didn’t last much longer as Scorchers appeared to be melting on the big stage.Instead of rebuilding, a bold Evans and Turner launched a counterattack and quickly smashed 33 runs off 13 balls after the seventh over to turn the momentum. English import Evans has had an under-the-radar debut BBL season but his energetic batting made him a key cog of Scorchers’ middle order. He played his best innings of the season as he fearlessly attacked Steve O’Keefe and was ably supported by Turner. The red-hot duo each registered half-centuries with sixes before Turner fell shortly after. It didn’t hurt Evans’ momentum as he unleashed several astounding cover drives to lift Scorchers to a total that appeared beyond them after four overs.Andrew Tye struck twice in as many balls but missed a hat-trick•Getty Images

Tye caps superb Scorchers bowling effort
Scorchers were without an ailed Marsh’s bowling, meaning Turner had to chip in with his offspin. He came on after the powerplay and his golden night continued with the scalp of Nick Bertus – just his second wicket of the season. As usual, Scorchers were miserly and overwhelmed the weakened Sixers batting order as all six bowlers claimed at least a wicket. Tye capped a superb season as he ran through the lower order to soon have Scorchers celebrating in style.Sixers never in the hunt
Hayden Kerr produced an all-time great innings of 98 not out to get Sixers into the final but the emerging allrounder couldn’t repeat the heroics. He fell in the second over and Sixers’ hopes slumped at 3 for 46 after the departure of captain Moises Henriques. The burden fell on Daniel Hughes, who returned from an ankle injury, and he looked in good touch although struggled to run between the wickets. But he lacked support and when his gutsy knock ended with a run-out on 42, Sixers ran out of gas as they fell to Scorchers for the fourth time this month.Sixers’ spinners star early
Sixers did start well and an upset was on the cards. They resisted using star spinners Nathan Lyon and O’Keefe in the powerplay and it did the trick.Sixers’ seamers bowled superbly and their accurate lengths outside off stump frustrated a shackled Scorchers, who were unable to target the ground’s short square boundaries. Then O’Keefe and Lyon ran rampant with two wickets each as Sixers gained a stranglehold. But Sixers were rattled by the brave batting of Evans and Turner as they let slip of the initiative. O’Keefe returned in the 16th over and picked up the wicket of Turner to finish with 2 for 43 in potentially his last BBL match.
