'A superstar Pakistan deserves': The rise and rise of Haris Rauf

Four years ago, Rauf snuck into an open cricket trial and clocked 92.3 mph in the final round; he hasn’t looked back since

Umar Farooq11-Nov-2021In the summer of 2017, three boys from a working-class family travelled by road from Islamabad to Gujranwala, four-and-a-half hours away, to participate in an open cricket trial. They arrived late and were denied entry as the stadium was filled to capacity. The trio had made the journey in peak hours on one of the busiest roads in the country — the Grand Trunk Road. There was no way they were going back without taking part in the trials. One of the scouts persuaded them to break into the stadium from one of the less-busy entrances. They broke an iron-gate lock and snuck in, mixing with the thousands of boys already inside and waiting for their turn in the nets. The three boys were all fast bowlers, all , hardened tape-ball cricketers. Each one of them was seriously quick and effectively a professional on the tape-ball circuit, freelancing for villages, and any other team that paid them well enough. The games took them around the country. They had never played hard-ball cricket, nor did they have any ambition to, but the prospect of open trials being held by Lahore Qalandars lured them in. All they had were raw pace and athletic bodies. They managed to clear the initial rounds,  but only one made it to the final round of the day. The last session had narrowed down the field from the thousands to the dozens.Related

It wasn’t about bowling accurately as much as it was about bowling as quickly as they could. The one who made it to that final round was Haris Rauf and in that round, the speed gun clocked him at 92.3 mph. Five hundred thousand had turned up over the course of these trials, of whom 145,000 were bowlers.Officially, the PCB has 3822 clubs registered all over the country, with approximately 80,000 players at the grassroots level. Unofficially, there are millions out in the open, playing cricket daily who never fall into this official circuit.

These trials are part of a Player Development Program that Lahore Qalandars launched in 2016, holding trials from Rawalpindi all the way down to south Punjab. The program has welcomed boys of all ages and from all backgrounds. Some have turned up barefoot and been given shoes. Others have turned up in and still managed to get a chance to do what they do. Everyone has had a fair chance to bat and bowl with scouts whittling down attendees each day. Those selected at the end of each trial are organised into eight city-based teams who compete against each other in a tournament that is broadcast every year. The 15 best performers in those games are picked in a development squad, who are then fast-tracked: this squad has travelled to Australia to compete against clubs there. In 2018, the development squad won the Abu Dhabi T20 trophy, an international tournament that included a full-strength Titans side, the reigning T20 champions of South Africa. While the program has taken time to mature, several players are now coming through.”To identify any talent in the world, you need a few seconds,” Aaqib Javed, the Qalandars coach and the man behind the program, says. “If something is natural in you … for instance, it takes just 10 seconds to judge the potential of a singer. Similarly in cricket, if you know what you are looking for, it takes three balls to judge if anyone has basic talent in him. This is exactly what we did in our program. There were hundreds of thousands who turned up and that was systematically filtered through down to the very best.”The process was stringent enough to catch the good ones. We weren’t looking for ready-made players. We wanted players to show potential, and we will invest in them. Rauf had pace, and bowling at 92.3 mph isn’t a joke. We saw his potential, and there followed a process of nurturing and developing him. He had the pace, but he needed two years of proper training to become a proper bowler.”Aaqib Javed – “We saw his potential, and there followed a process of nurturing and developing him”•Lahore Qalandars

Until he was 23, Rauf had no hard-ball experience. He had grown up near one of Islamabad’s biggest cricket clubs – Diamond CC – but had never enrolled himself there. The son of a welder who worked for the Public Works Department, Rauf had done his Intermediate and was in the process of completing an IT degree before cricket took over his life. He worked as a salesman at a mobile shop but would make extra money on the tape-ball circuit, playing for teams he had no attachment to other than that they were paying him to play.If you wanted a fast bowler who can hit the blockhole ball after ball with a tape-ball in those days, the guy to call was Rauf. He was only ever a phone call away and always ready to roll as long as teams could afford his travelling expenses. How did he choose which team to play for? Simple: whichever one paid him the most. A good tournament could make him up to Rs. 50,000 and more. But because tape-ball cricket is not regulated, the earnings fluctuated. There were good days and bad days as far as earning money went. His parents were never keen that he make a career out of it by playing hard-ball cricket – that was too risky a path. Risky because of the widespread belief that you can only make it with some . In a game played mostly by the working class but run by an elite, it’s hard to quash the notion that you need the right support from somewhere to elevate yourself.Cricket was something he played for fun and a little bit of spending money. The priority, while he was studying and then working, was always to make a living. A career in cricket was always the fantasy, but he was hesitant about committing himself to the path that took him there.”I had never given any trials ever before this,” Rauf had said while talking to ESPNcricinfo in 2019. “Never really trusted that there would be a fair trial, and I would be selected. I didn’t even play club cricket mainly because I didn’t find fairness as they also used to play their own boys. When Lahore Qalandars were taking trials all around the country, I missed the one near my home in Rawalpindi because I had a tape-ball match in Attock.”But my friends took me along with them to Gujranwala, and it was just an outing and a bit of fun for us until we started competing with each other on who could generate more pace as Aaqib was watching us. One of them hit around 87 or 88, and I wanted to push it further. I pushed my limit and hit 92.3 mph which caught Aaqib ‘s attention and that is where I was selected. It was just one ball.”Rauf was handed a contract and taken in by the franchise for further development. At 5″11 and 71kg, he needed to put on some serious muscle to make sure his body could handle the pace he could bowl at. Qalandars set him a strict training and nutrition plan and Aaqib took personal oversight of his training. He was sent to Australia as part of the program to feature in competitive cricket with Hawkesbury Cricket Club. He made his T20 debut for Qalandars against the Hobart Hurricanes in 2018 and picked up 1 for 23 in Qalandars’ defeat of Titans in the final of that tournament. It was then that he was picked by the franchise for the PSL, where in his first season in 2018-19, he took 11 wickets in 10 matches with an economy rate of 7.41. That included a match-winning 4 for 23 against Karachi Kings. That same year, he hit the jackpot when he landed a Big Bash contract. Dale Steyn’s debut in the BBL for the Melbourne Stars was delayed due to an injury. Rauf was already in Australia playing grade cricket in Hobart. Sameen Rana, one of the Qalandars’ owners, pushed Rauf as a replacement with the BBL authorities, telling them that if he didn’t perform, they never needed to listen to him again.Rauf was duly picked and quickly became one of the headlines of the season, more than filling his own hero Steyn’s shoes. He bowled with great pace consistently and despite playing only 10 games, ended up as the fourth-highest wicket-taker that season with 20 wickets. His strike rate of 11.3 was second only to Sean Abbott’s among those who took at least six wickets. The highlight of his season was taking a hat-trick on the same day as Rashid Khan.Back home, Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz were fading away from the scene, and within a couple of months, the PCB had signed Rauf on to an emerging central contract.

“I wanted Haris to be free from the burdens of the legacy of fast bowling in Pakistan, of Wasim, Waqar and Imran, which can weigh a new bowler down”Aaqib Javed, Lahore Qalandars’ head coach

“He is a special character,” Aaqib says. “A person who absorbs a lot and is very self-aware. He knows what he is doing and what he wants to do. I have come across so many boys, and a lot of them lose focus easily, but Rauf was committed. The clarity in his mind about what he wants is exceptional. Having talent is one thing, but the basic difference is his determination. All I did was just make Haris be himself.”Playing in an actual cricket stadium could only have been part of the imagination of this tape-ball cricketer who grew up playing on streets and in open, dusty fields. It’s still difficult to grasp that in just over two years, Rauf has gone from no experience with a hard ball into one of the hottest commodities at the T20 World Cup.”Players often come with a lot of misconceptions about the game,” Aaqib says. “They think it’s just about bat and ball, but it’s more than that. You are committing to a profession that takes everything out of you. Only a very few manage to really find the true essence of cricket.”I wanted Haris to be free from the burdens of the legacy of fast bowling in Pakistan, of Wasim, Waqar and Imran, which can weigh a new bowler down. I didn’t want him to feel overwhelmed by me or anyone else. He responded well, and I am proud of him and happy that Lahore Qalandars made a real difference and gave back a superstar Pakistan deserves.”

Harmanpreet on T20 World Cup: 'Want to give the country another reason to celebrate this year'

She wants her team to get inspired by the recent success of the Indian men’s team

Newsroom: Is this India Women’s best chance to win the World Cup?

India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur wants her team to draw inspiration from the India men’s team that won the T20 World Cup in June, when they travel to the UAE for the Women’s T20 World Cup in October. While the men’s team won the title after 17 years and lifted an ICC trophy after 11 years, the women’s team is yet to lift the T20 World Cup. They came close in the 2020 edition, when they were runners-up in Australia.”We have been really inspired by the men’s team, the way they won the T20 World Cup this year,” Harmanpreet said at an event in Delhi, on the same day the India’s T20 World Cup squad was announced. “They worked really hard for this trophy and won some tough matches. We need to learn how they maintained their body language for such matches and how they approached such games. We’re on the same road now and getting ready for our World Cup campaign. The team is working really hard and our attempt will be to give our country and fans another opportunity to celebrate this year.”The women’s side last reached the ODI World Cup final in 2017, when they lost by just nine runs at Lord’s, before going down to Australia in the T20 World Cup final in 2020, and two years later they again lost to Australia, also by nine runs, in the final of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In last year’s T20 World Cup, India went down to Australia in the semi-final, by just five runs, and when they were the favourites to win the Asia Cup in the T20 format last month, they were beaten comprehensively by the much lower-ranked Sri Lanka.Related

For the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE, India are in Group A with Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Pakistan. Their first three matches will be in Dubai, before they take on Australia in Sharjah. Will India be under pressure against Australia and the new Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka?”The World Cup is a kind of tournament for which all teams prepare differently,” Harmanpreet said. “So no team can be taken lightly and similarly no team should be overestimated either. Bilateral series have a different kind of pressure and for World Cups there is pressure as well as expectations and hopes of fans. We are working extremely hard to live up to those expectations, we have been holding camps where all players are working hard. We have also worked on the mistakes we made the last time. Now we’re ready with a positive mindset.”The T20 World Cup will start on October 3 in Sharjah with two matches on the opening day. India’s campaign will kick off on October 4 against New Zealand, before taking on Pakistan on October 6, Sri Lanka on October 9 and Australia on October 13. After the round-robin stage, the top two teams from each group will play the semi-finals on October 17 and 18, and the final is scheduled for October 20 in Dubai.

Mayank Yadav called up as India name fresh-looking 15 for Bangladesh T20Is

Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who last played a T20I in 2021, has been recalled

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Sep-20243:00

Takeaways: A first look at Mayank Yadav

Fast bowler Mayank Yadav, who lit up IPL 2024 with his searing spells of 150kph-plus pace, has earned his maiden India call-up. He has been named in the squad for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, which begins in Gwalior on October 6.Mayank’s electric speeds during the early part of IPL 2024 – where he won two Player-of-the-Match awards in the four matches he played – created a buzz around him. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler bowled only one over in his third game of the season before walking off with pain in his abdomen. He was soon ruled out of the IPL with a side injury. While he recovered from that injury, he picked up a separate injury while bowling in the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who last played a T20I in 2021, has been recalled, following a resurgence in IPL 2024, during which he was the highest wicket-taker for champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with 21 wickets in 14 bowling innings. On the whole, India have named a fresh-looking squad of 15 for the three T20Is, which will be played between the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh and the Test series against New Zealand that starts on October 16. Given their workload, players part of India’s Test squad, such as Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj – who were all part of India’s most recent T20I assignment in Sri Lanka – have been rested.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

This has opened up space for a number of young faces. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhishek Sharma, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana, who were all part of the squad for the tour of Zimbabwe in July, are back after missing the Sri Lanka tour. Jitesh will compete with Sanju Samson for the wicketkeeper’s slot.No vice-captain has been named in the squad, which will be led by full-time T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. Other regulars in the squad include Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh.Arshdeep, Rana and Mayank will make up the seam options alongside allrounders Hardik, Dube and Reddy, while Bishnoi, Varun and Washington are the main spin options with Abhishek and Riyan Parag as part-time options. Abhishek is the only regular opening batter in the squad, which leaves Samson as his likely opening partner. The three T20Is will be played in Gwalior, Delhi and Hyderabad on October 6, 9 and 12 respectively.India T20I squad for Bangladesh seriesSuryakumar Yadav (capt), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav

Sussex push for victory despite Wayne Madsen hundred

Derbyshire two down and 176 behind in second innings after being made to follow on

Sussex go into the final day of their Vitality County Championship match against Derbyshire as clear favourites to extend their lead at the top of Division Two with their sixth victory of the season. But some resolute batting by the Derbyshire batters second time round has given them an outside chance of saving the game. In their first innings Derbyshire had been 24 for 4 in reply to the massive Sussex score of 607 for 7 declared. But after being asked to follow on, 317 runs behind, they ended the third day on 141 for 2, still 176 in arrears.Openers Harry Came and Luis Reece dropped anchor with a first-wicket stand of 46 in 23.4 overs as they saw off the opening burst from Ollie Robinson and Jaydev Unadkat with the Kookaburra ball. At 29 for 0 after 16 overs the Sussex captain John Simpson – who was influenced by the fading light – switched to his spinners. And it was James Coles qho made the breakthrough in the 24th over when Reece, sweeping, was caught by Fynn Hudson-Prentice at deep backward square leg for an 88-ball 27.At 47 for 1, just before tea, the players went off for bad light, and were off the field for an hour. But tea was taken and ultimately only four overs were lost. When play was resumed Brooke Guest was more positive, striking three fours and sweeping Carson for six before he fell lbw on the back foot to the Sussex spinner. But then Came and first-innings batting hero Wayne Madsen defied the Sussex attack with an unbroken half-century third-wicket stand. In an extended morning session, Derbyshire had been bowled out for 290, having started the day on 178 for 6, still a massive 429 runs behind. Madsen, resuming on 79, scored 138, his 38th first-class century and his fourth against Sussex. He faced 210 deliveries, striking 21 fours and three sixes. Offspinner Jack Carson, following his nine wickets in the previous match against Yorkshire, had figures of 5 for 90, becoming the first Sussex spinner to return a five-for against Derbyshire since Chris Waller in 1985.Zak Chappell was first out, lbw to Carson for 25 as he attempted to slog-sweep, having added 54 with Madsen. Jack Morley was less obdurate, losing his middle stump to one that turned sharply from Carson for a seven-ball duck. But Madsen found another ally in Daryn Dupavillon, the pair adding 47 for the ninth wicket.Madsen decided to take the attack to Carson, hitting him for 16 from three deliveries, with successive leg-side sixes, before hoisting the bowler to deep midwicket. Dupavillon was last out, having hit three fours and two sixes in his 54-ball 28. He was bowled by Henry Crocombe, and wicketkeeper Simpson had to take evasive action as the ball ricocheted off the stumps.

Arsenal demand major Thomas Partey concession in talks over new deal

According to broadcast giant ESPN, Arsenal are demanding a major concession from Thomas Partey as talks continue over a new contract for the midfielder.

Thomas Partey could now stay at Arsenal with talks ongoing

The £200,000-per-week star has stayed relatively injury-free throughout an impressive 2024/2025 campaign which has seen him dazzle in multiple roles under Mikel Arteta.

Utilised at right-back during the absences of key players, as well as partnering the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in midfield to great effect, Partey’s been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers throughout the season.

Last term, the Ghana international could barely get a look-in due to fitness issues and falling down Arteta’s pecking order, and was widely tipped to leave the club four years after his £45 million transfer from Atlético Madrid.

However, this campaign, Partey has made more appearances than in any of his previous seasons at the Emirates Stadium, now proving indispensable to Arteta.

Partey’s resurgence has now sparked the club into action, with Arsenal opening talks to extend the 31-year-old’s contract as his current terms are due to expire this summer.

Arteta has confirmed to the press that he wants to keep Partey at the club for next season, with sporting director Andrea Berta now handed the task of agreeing an extension.

“Yes, there is progress with all the players. I’ll leave that to Andrea and the club to decide and to talk about,” said Arteta when asked if there has been progress over a new deal for Partey.

“The intention is very clear. I’ll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward.”

If contract talks go south, Barcelona are among the clubs eyeing a Bosman deal for Partey, so the African won’t be short of prestigious options.

Arsenal demand major concession from Thomas Partey in contract talks

As per ESPN, it is now believed that Arsenal will demand one major concession from Partey in “any” deal for a new contract, despite his exceptional form.

The suggestion is its pretty non-negotiable, with the concession being that the midfielder will need to take a pay cut to remain in north London.

This comes as Arsenal attempt to finalise a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, and Berta is widely rumoured to also be negotiating fresh terms with the likes of Bukayo Saka, so it appears the club wish to trim their wage bill where possible.

Partey is keen to remain at Arsenal, according to credible news outlets like The Telegraph, but it remains to be seen whether he’s willing to be paid less than his illustrious teammates – especially considering he’s put in consistently outstanding performances throughout 2024/2025.

Phil Salt and Mitchell Starc headline KKR's thumping win

The KKR spinners meanwhile stifled the opposition batters as usual, ensuring the chase was far from demanding

Rapid Fire: Reasons behind KKR’s improved show this season

Phil Salt and Mitchell Starc made it a Bengali New Year to remember for the Kolkata Knight Riders fans at Eden Gardens, helping the hosts thump Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets on Sunday. Starc picked up important LSG wickets to finish with 3 for 28, his best figures of the season, while Salt led the charge in the chase with an unbeaten 47-ball 89. KKR now sit second on the points table, having begun a string of five straight home games in fabulous fashion.KKR were also left chasing a comfortable target courtesy their spinners’ efforts in the middle overs; they did not let LSG break away despite having wickets in hand. Sunil Narine took 1 for 17 in four while Varun Chakravarthy claimed 1 for 30. Together, their eight overs went for only 5.88 per over.As for LSG, there were two silver linings, provided by Nicholas Pooran and Mohsin Khan. From No. 6, Pooran struck four sixes and two fours to make a 32-ball 45 to give LSG a competitive total while Mohsin picked up the only two KKR wickets to fall, both in the powerplay.Phil Salt attacked from one end even as KKR lost two early wickets•Associated PressSalt shakes up LSGAfter the game, KL Rahul described the defeat as a “proper hammering”, and the prime reason for that was Salt. Having been dismissed for a duck in Chennai in KKR’s previous game, Salt was very nearly out for a duck again when he clipped debutant Shamar Joseph to short-fine leg. Luckily for Salt, Yash Thakur dropped him and even if he hadn’t, Joseph’s front-foot no-ball would’ve given him a reprieve anyway. After that let-off, Salt finished the first over with a six down the ground, and then continued to go for it through the powerplay. That helped KKR stay on course even as Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi fell cheaply. He clubbed Krunal Pandya for a hat-trick of boundaries in the third over and that set up a 58-run powerplay. On 31, Salt was dropped again at deep-square leg in the seventh over, and it perhaps made him tentative for a couple of overs. But Salt once again found momentum in the tenth over, bowled by Arshad Khan (the bowler paying the price for having dropped him three overs earlier). Salt struck consecutive fours in the tenth to reach his fifty in 26 balls and bring up KKR’s hundred inside ten overs.Salt then began to apply the finishing touches when he struck Thakur for three fours in the 14th over, followed by a massive six over midwicket off Mohsin in the 15th. His pull for four in the 16th over off a half-tracker from Bishnoi summed up both the KKR batting innings and the LSG bowling performance. From the other end, Shreyas Iyer made up for a slow start to finish unbeaten for the second time this season. He did not need to take risks, given Salt’s brisk scoring and the two early wickets. He played aggressive shots only as the target got closer. He struck Ravi Bishnoi and Arshad for boundaries through the middle overs to move from 6 off 12 to finish unbeaten on 38 off 38. He was particularly strong off his hips as the LSG pacers erred by bowling too many times on a leg-stump line. His unbroken partnership of 120 with Salt was the highest third-wicket stand for KKR in the IPL.0:54

Starc: ‘Taken me longer than I would’ve liked to get back into rhythm’

Starc leads KKR’s bowling chargeAfter Vaibhav Arora struck early to remove Quinton de Kock, Shreyas gave Starc a third powerplay over in the afternoon heat to find another wicket. He did that when an out-of-form Deepak Hooda sliced him to backward point in the fifth over.Rahul and the No. 4 Ayush Badoni then consolidated to take LSG to 72 for 2 in ten overs, however Rahul’s attempt to up his scoring rate resulted in his dismissal. Rahul struck Andre Russell for a six to start off the 11th over but while attempting a repeat next ball, he holed out for 39 at deep midwicket. That brought in Marcus Stoinis, but his stay was short lived when he was deceived by Varun, inside-edging a catch to the off-side which the wicketkeeper Salt smartly collected. At 109 for 4 in 14 overs, LSG were at risk of finishing well under-par. The situation become more dire when Badoni top-edged Narine in the 15th for a laboured 27-ball 29. Narine would concede no boundaries as he finished with 1 for 17.But while Pooran was around, LSG still had hope, and he offered just that with his 32-ball 45. He went after the inexperienced pair of Harshit Rana and Arora in the death overs, helping LSG score 29 runs off the 18th and 19th overs. However, Starc stopped further damage in the 20th over, when he had Pooran nicking behind off the first ball. That ensured LSG would score only 52 runs off the final six overs, with Starc embellishing his returns with a third wicket off the final delivery of the innings.

A better signing than Huijsen: Chelsea preparing bid for £50m defender

da realbet: The summer transfer window is only a couple of months away from officially opening up for business and Chelsea have already begun work on bolstering their squad.

da betobet: It was recently reported that the Blues have made contact with Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen’s representatives ahead of a summer deal for the Spain international.

Chelsea are one of a number of teams interested in signing the 20-year-old enforcer, who reportedly has a release clause worth £50m in his current contract at the Vitality Stadium.

The London giants, however, are now reportedly preparing a bid for another centre-back who would be even better than Huijsen at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea plot bid for Premier League defender

According to the Mirror, Chelsea are prepared to bid for Crystal Palace central defender Marc Guehi in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Blues want to sign the England international and are ‘ready’ to offer £50m and Trevoh Chalobah in exchange for the Eagles colossus.

It reveals that Palace would be willing to take Chalobah, who they had on loan in the first half of the season, as part of a deal for Guehi and that they value their star defender at £70m, making £50m and the current Chelsea centre-back a tempting offer.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

If a deal can be ironed out for the English ace, Enzo Maresca could have an even better signing than Huijsen on his hands in that area of the pitch.

Why Marc Guehi would be an even better signing than Dean Huijsen

Guehi is a Chelsea academy graduate who already knows the club and has come up through the ranks, with players like Reece James, and that could help him to settle in quicker than the Bournemouth ace.

He is also a homegrown talent who would help towards the quota of English academy stars needed for Premier League and European competitions.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

The 24-year-old star’s performances in the Premier League in comparison to Huijsen’s this season also suggest that he could be an even better signing in the immediate future.

Guehi’s out-and-out defending as a centre-back in the top-flight is impressive and could make him an excellent addition to the Chelsea squad, as a proven defender at that level.

As you can see in the table above, the Palace skipper has outperformed Huijsen in a host of key defensive metrics, without making as many big errors.

This suggests that the former Blues academy graduate could be more effective at preventing opposition teams from creating chances against the team, by making more recoveries and clearances, whilst also winning a higher percentage of his individual duels.

When you couple this with the fact that Guehi, once dubbed “incredible” by reporter Stuart James, could hit the ground running by returning to the club he has already played for, Maresca could be better off signing the Eagles star instead of splashing £50m on the Spanish titan.

Therefore, this £50m-plus-Chalobah deal for the English titan could be a terrific piece of business by the Blues if they can get a deal over the line in the upcoming summer transfer window.
