Spurs: Paratici ‘likely’ to target Enrique

Tottenham Hotspur chief Fabio Paratici is personally ‘more likely’ to target former Spain boss Luis Enrique over the heavily-linked Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Conte future uncertain…

The future of current Spurs manager Antonio Conte is set to be one of the hot topics over these next few months with reports suggesting he may well leave.

While the north Londoners have an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, some sources claim the Italian is far more likely than not to depart by the end of 2022/2023.

Pochettino, who is currently out-of-work after leaving PSG, has been tipped as a hot contender for the role yet Spurs reporter Jack Pitt-Brooke claims Paratici may personally target another name.

The Latest: Paratici ‘more likely’ to target Enrique…

Indeed, former Barcelona tactician Enrique may be more favoured by the managing director despite chairman Daniel Levy and those within Tottenham appealing to Pochettino.

Pitt-Brooke explained on Twitter:

“If they go for Pochettino it would be driven by Levy, not Paratici. No way Paratici would hand over that much power willingly. He’d be more likely to go for, say, Luis Enrique. But then it was Levy (not Paratici) who appointed Conte in the first place…”

The Verdict: Big name…

Also currently a free agent and proven at the top level of management, Enrique emerges as a potentially astute option to succeed Conte if he does leave.

The 4-3-3 attacking boss has won nine major pieces of silverware in total, including a Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and two La Liga titles with Barca (Transfermarkt).

Enrique would not only represent a fine Pochettino alternative for little to no cost, the 52-year-old’s pedigree and philosophy as a forward-thinking tactician would seriously appeal to Spurs supporters.

If Paratici campaigns with the Spurs hierarchy to appoint Enrique, he would have a serious case to bring forward to Levy and the board.

Farke must unleash "blistering" £34k-p/w Leeds ace alongside Bamford vs Cardiff

Leeds United return to action in the Championship this afternoon as they travel to Wales to take on Cardiff City in their 27th league match of the campaign.

The Whites were in FA Cup action last weekend as they faced Peterborough United away from Elland Road on Sunday and ran out 3-0 winners.

Daniel Farke's side secured a comfortable win thanks to two goals from Ethan Ampadu either side of a wondergoal from striker Patrick Bamford.

The English centre-forward could keep his position in the side for this clash with Cardiff after that stunning strike and the German head coach must unleash Georginio Rutter in the number ten position behind him, ahead of Joel Piroe.

Bamford's season in numbers

Bamford failed to find the back of the net in any of his first 16 appearances for Leeds this season, and did not provide a single assist for his teammates in that time.

In fact, the 30-year-old striker also missed a penalty in a crucial game against Stoke City away from home, minutes before the hosts scored the winning goal.

However, the former Middlesbrough star was handed his first Championship start of the campaign against Birmingham on New Year's Day and headed in his first goal of the season from Dan James' cross.

Bamford then chipped in with a goal of the season contender, as shown in the video above, and an assist in the 3-0 win over Peterborough last weekend and this means that he has three direct goal contributions in his last two appearances.

Rutter's season in numbers

Farke could now provide the English number nine with the service that he needs to continue that rich vein of form by bringing Rutter back into the team.

The French whiz was rested – as an unused substitute – against Peterborough and should come straight back into the XI to replace Piroe due to his superior creativity.

As you can see in the table above, Rutter has significantly outperformed the former Swansea marksman in a host of key creative metrics in the Championship this season.

In fact, the 21-year-old magician ranks within the top 1% of forwards in the division for shot-creating actions (4.53), Expected Assisted Goals (0.37), and assists (0.39) per 90. He also ranks within the top 1% for successful take-ons (2.74) and the top 3% for progressive passes (3.66) per 90.

These statistics show that the ex-Hoffenheim prospect has been one of the best, if not the best, playmakers in the league so far this season.

Leeds forward Georgino Rutter.

The £34k-per-week star, who was once lauded for his "blistering" pace by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has the quality to consistently unlock opposition defences to create high-quality chances for his teammates in front of goal.

This is why Farke must unleash him in the number ten position behind Bamford to provide the English striker with all the ammunition that he needs to continue his goalscoring form.

Mitchell Starc troubled by sore calf

Australia’s spearhead Mitchell Starc will need to bowl at the touring team’s main training session on Tuesday to prove his fitness for the pivotal third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. He was a notable absentee from centre wicket net practice as Australia resumed preparations at Newlands following a week’s break. While Mitchell Marsh did bowl a couple of overs at half-pace as he continued his recovery from a groin strain, a calf complaint for Starc is a concern for Australia given that he has just had numerous days to shake off any residual niggles from the first two Tests of the series in Durban and Port Elizabeth.Typically Australia’s quicks bowl at two training sessions on resumption from a break before resting on match eve, meaning Starc is behind Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins in his readiness for the start of the match on Thursday. The young speedster Jhye Richardson and the more seasoned seam and swing bowler Chadd Sayers are the two reserve pace bowling options on tour.”Sometimes the bowlers just work their way into the games a little bit differently, his preparation might be a little bit different going into this game,” Cameron Bancroft said of Starc. “I think in the past, he’s bowled a couple of days out and had that third day as a bit of a rest day. Hopefully he’ll bowl [on Tuesday], I’m sure he’ll be ok.”[Cummins and Hazlewood] bowled really well, they’re first-class campaigners and the beauty of being part of this team is you get opportunities to face in the nets a lot some of the best bowlers in the world and we have them. Today they were really good out there, had a few days off so they loosened up and got into things a bit slower, but by the first couple of balls they were back into full swing at full tilt.”Starc has a history of suffering injuries that prevent him from playing every Test of a series. During the recent Ashes bout, he suffered a heel problem that ruled him out of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne before he returned for the final match in Sydney. Before that, he played only two of four Tests in India, and in 2015-16 suffered foot and ankle problems that caused him to miss a home series against West Indies followed by a tour of New Zealand. The sight of Marsh bowling, albeit conservatively, was a more encouraging sight for Australia, after his bowling value was underlined by a pair of reverse-swing wickets at St George’s Park.”He’s had four really important days off as it has been for everyone,” Bancroft said, “especially our fast bowlers who’ve spent a lot of time bowling over the past six months for us. Mitch has been working through his stuff and had a bowl. I assume he’ll pick that up leading up to the game on Thursday and I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

Man Utd's day-one girl is going nowhere! Leah Galton agrees contract extension through to 2026 – but no breakthrough yet in Mary Earps negotiations

Man Utd winger Leah Galton has signed a new deal as the club looks to tie down many of its out-of-contract stars, England star Mary Earps among them.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Man Utd have been working for some time to agree a new contract with Galton, with the long-serving forward set to become a free agent in the summer. However, on Wednesday, the club confirmed that the two parties have struck a deal.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

After signing the dotted lines, the English forward said, "I’m delighted to continue my journey with Manchester United and want to thank my friends, family and team-mates for their continued support – along with our wonderful fans, who have been great to me throughout my time here."

Manager Mark Skinner was delighted to see his player extending his stay at the club as he said, "Leah continues to lead by example, on and off the pitch, and epitomises everything a professional footballer should be. We are delighted to see her commit her future to the club and look forward to many more winning experiences together."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Galton has been at the club since it relaunched its women's team back in 2018. She's racked up over 100 appearances in that time and played a vital role in Man Utd establishing themselves at the top table, helping the Red Devils to hit milestones such as promotion to the Women's Super League, an FA Cup final and their first ever appearance in the Women's Champions League.

To keep the 29-year-old around is a huge boost, then, but there is still a lot of work for Man Utd to do when it comes to contract renewals. Captain Katie Zelem and forwards Lucia Garcia, Rachel Williams and Nikita Parris all have contracts that will expire in a few months' time, as does England star Mary Earps, who was linked heavily with a move to Arsenal last summer. There have been rumblings of interest from clubs in Europe for Earps during the January transfer window, too, but she appears set to stay in Manchester for the time being.

Galton is one of just five players to make over 100 appearances for Man Utd's women's team, along with Ella Toone, Zelem, Millie Turner and Earps. She is also the team's second highest goal-scorer in its short history, only behind Toone.

Watling doubt for opening Test against West Indies

Wicketkeeper BJ Watling is a doubt for New Zealand’s opening Test against West Indies due to a hip injury with the uncapped Tom Blundell in line for a debut if Watling is not available. The problem has forced Watling to sit out the last two rounds of Plunket Shield matches for Northern Districts. He will play as a batsman only against Auckland this week before what will effectively be a fitness test against Otago at the end of the month where he will have to keep wicket to be available for the first Test in Wellington on December 1.

New Zealand A
Martin Guptill (capt), Todd Astle, Tom Blundell, Neil Broom, Tom Bruce, Lockie Ferguson, Scott Kuggeleijn, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Jeet Raval, George Worker

If Watling can’t take his place at the Basin Reserve – it would be the first Test he has missed since Headingley against England in 2013 – it would likely mean a first cap for 27-year-old Blundell ahead of handing the gloves to one-day keeper Tom Latham. Blundell has previously played one T20I and has been included in the New Zealand A side to face West Indies in their warm-up match from November 25.The cloud over Watling was the only uncertainty in a settled 12-man New Zealand squad, resuming Test cricket for the first time since March, although one further player will be added to the party following the A side’s fixture. Colin de Grandhomme has retained his place as the seam-bowling allrounder while Matt Henry is the extra pace bowler behind the established trio of Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner.West Indies could face a lively welcome to their tour with the New Zealand A side including three rapid pacemen in Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson and Scott Kuggeleijn. Ferguson recently took a career-best match haul of 12 for 78 against Otago.Martin Guptill will captain the A side which also includes incumbent Test opener Jeet Raval alongside Colin Munro after his successful limited-overs tour of India and legspinner Todd Astle who was forced home from that trip with a groin strain.”While the Blackcaps squad doesn’t have too many surprises, this NZ A team certainly shows that we have depth and quality players who are pushing for higher honours,” selector Gavin Larsen said.”Watching the three quickest bowlers in NZ operating together will certainly be exciting, and all three have plenty to play for. We are looking to develop Martin’s leadership capabilities and the NZ A match is another good opportunity.”

Stokes loses New Balance contract

Ben Stokes, the England allrounder who is currently under police investigation for his part in a late-night brawl in Bristol last month, has been dropped by his kit manufacturer, New Balance

George Dobell11-Oct-2017Ben Stokes, the England allrounder who is currently under police investigation for his part in a late-night brawl in Bristol last month, has been dropped by his kit manufacturer, New Balance. The company issued a statement on Wednesday saying his behaviour “does not match our brand culture and values” and that his contract, worth an estimated £200,000 a year, had been terminated. The announcement came shortly after Stokes had tweeted an apology for a separate incident, in which he apparently mocked the disabled son of British celebrity Katie Price, and with his involvement in the Ashes increasingly uncertain. While the ECB has said Stokes will not travel to Australia until his legal issues are resolved – he was arrested but has not, at this stage, been charged – it remains unclear whether he will be part of the group gathering in Loughborough for a training camp from next Tuesday. The camp is likely it to involve some fielding practice – the potential loss of Stokes further weakens England’s close-catching – as well as discussion on what to expect in Australia and some bowling with the Kookaburra ball.New Balance provides Stokes with branded equipment, from bats to boots. In a statement, the company said: “New Balance does not condone behaviour by our global athletes that does not match our brand culture and values, and therefore we have ended our relationship with Ben Stokes, effective October 11, 2017. We will not provide further comment.”Shortly after the incident in September, which saw Stokes held overnight by Bristol police, a TV ad by brewer Greene King featuring the player drinking in a pub was pulled.Ben Stokes’ Twitter apology•Getty Images/Twitter

Stokes has also issued an apology after appearing to mock Harvey Price. A video of him impersonating Harvey, who suffers from autism, ADHD, Prader-Willi Syndrome and blindness, circulated shortly after Stokes’ arrest. He has now publically expressed his regret and, having admitted he should never have acted in such a way, accepted that he behaved “foolishly”. In a statement on Twitter, Stokes said he had contacted both Harvey and Katie Price personally and offered to get involved in their attempts to reduce online bullying.”Earlier this year I was a shown a clip of Harvey being asked on Loose Women how he responds to internet trolls,” Stokes wrote. “I loved Harvey’s directness with his responses – he said what most of us think but perhaps aren’t brave enough to say, let alone on live TV.”I foolishly attempted to copy the clip after I saw it a few times. I should never have done this and I am so sorry. It was absolutely not my intention to offend Harvey, Katie or anybody else.”I have written to both Harvey and Katie to say sorry and prior to this offered to meet in person at the end of last month with a view to also getting behind their petition about online bullying. I do hope I can put this right.”

Moeen's five secures England 177-run victory

Moeen Ali completed an outstanding series with 5 for 69 to wrap up a 3-1 victory for England as South Africa collapsed following a century stand between Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis

The Report by Andrew Miller07-Aug-20170:40

Moeen the menace for South Africa again

Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryMoeen Ali is used to dealing with a certain amount of confusion about his role in the England team. He started this series as England’s designated “second spinner”, when Liam Dawson (remember him?) was drafted in to shore up their options for Lord’s and Trent Bridge. And Moeen started this match by coming in at No. 9, after Toby Roland-Jones’ peculiar promotion as a non-batting nightwatchman in England’s first innings. But the confusion, on this final day of the Investec Test series, was all in the minds of South Africa’s middle and lower order, as Moeen first broke the spirited resistance of their senior batsman, Hashim Amla, before ripping through the defences of Quinton de Kock and Theunis de Bruyn in the space of 10 innings-wrecking deliveries. He then put the seal on an emphatic 177-run victory at 5.35pm, with the back-to-back scalps of Morne Morkel and Duanne Olivier, who was caught at slip for a golden duck to complete Moeen’s innings figures of 5 for 69, and a phenomenal haul of 25 wickets at 15.64 – the most by an England spinner since 1961.Add to that his impressive haul of 252 runs – including his onslaught on the third evening of this match (he eventually finished 75 not out as England were bowled out for 243 in the space of 17 more deliveries this morning) – and Moeen, second spinner or not, has marched unequivocally into the annals of the game’s most telling allrounders.England’s victory had never really been in doubt, given how daunting South Africa’s target of 380 had been on an increasingly spiteful pitch. But while Amla and South Africa’s captain Faf du Plessis were adding 123 for the fourth wicket in a skilful and determined stand, the prospect of the match spilling over into a fifth day had been a growing possibility – and given that today’s play featured an hour-long delay for rain, that might have elicited one or two anxious glances through the curtains. But in the end, it was all academic, as England racked up a comprehensive 3-1 series win, their first at home to South Africa since 1998. Moeen, to no-one’s surprise, was named both Man of the Match and the Series, having set it all in motion with ten wickets at Lord’s in the opening Test, while Joe Root had the honour of lifting the Basil D’Oliviera Trophy to mark a successful start to his era as Test captain. Or rather, his deputy, Ben Stokes did – Root’s hands were already taken up by the official Investec Trophy as the champagne began to flow.It was comfortable in the end, but it would not have been greedy of England to expect an even more comprehensive win, given how dominant their senior seamers, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, had been at the start of South Africa’s chase. Exploiting every vagary in a pitch that had been juiced up by an hour of rain, the pair accounted for both openers, Dean Elgar and Heino Kuhn, in a peerless display of new-ball aggression, before Toby Roland-Jones popped up on the stroke of lunch to extract Temba Bavuma with an edge so thin that he hadn’t even heard it himself.Moeen Ali made the key breakthrough and then ran through the rest•Getty ImagesAnd so Amla and du Plessis were brought together immediately after lunch, knowing that, at 40 for 3, any hope of survival realistically rested on their shoulders. Both men had proven track records when it comes to batting long and digging deep. Amla, whose national-record 311 not out came on their last tour of England in 2012, was the obvious focal point of South Africa’s resistance, while du Plessis made his name as a Test batsman in his very first innings, against Australia at Adelaide in November 212, digging in for 376 deliveries to produce a series-turning draw. But, far from embarking on a blockathon, both men displayed improbable fluency throughout what had been anticipated as a fraught and attritional session. Amla had been intent on little more than survival at the outset of his innings, needing 18 deliveries to get off the mark, but he set about loosening the shackles as the hardness went out of the new ball and the spite in the wicket was tamed.Roland-Jones, his nemesis in his previous three innings, was carted for three driven fours in a single over – the first a touch streaky, the rest a stamp of class – while a willingness to work on a new trick, even at the grand old age of 34 and with more than 8000 runs in his 107 Tests, showed that there’s plenty of life in the old dog yet.Facing up to Moeen, who was extracting some prolific turn back into the right-hander, Amla thrust his pad, with the bat as an afterthought, at a delivery that was almost certainly heading for middle stump but umpire Aleem Dar understandably accepted that he had been playing a stroke. Replays might have argued otherwise, and Amla, on 12 at the time, perhaps realised that to repeat that tactic would invite retribution. So he opted instead to unfurl the reverse sweep – a shot he had played, by some estimations, on just three previous occasions in his Test career. It was an emphatic, and effective, means of combatting Moeen’s wiles. And with du Plessis providing a durable foil at the other end, England were obliged to tinker with their fields and tactics, with Joe Root bringing himself on to bowl what were only his third and fourth overs of the series. The pair had extended their stand across 31 overs, which would ordinarily have allowed them to bat clean through the session. However, the rain delay in the morning meant an extra half-hour had to be shoehorned in before tea, and that window eventually proved decisive. The crucial breakthrough came when Moeen switched to the James Anderson End after being negated by Amla’s reverse tactics, and tweaked a sharp offbreak into Amla’s pads. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena turned down the initial appeal, but Joel Wilson the TV umpire confirmed that the ball would have been crashing into leg stump, in spite of a clear spike on the snickometer that did not appear to have been caused by an inside edge. And Moeen was back in action in his very next over as well, when the left-handed de Kock was lured into a loose drive out of the rough, and was snaffled low at second slip by Alastair Cook as the ball bit and turned. De Bruyn was next in Moeen’s sights, and he wasn’t there for long, suckered by the one that skidded straight on, and playing back to fatal effect as Stokes this time was the slip catcher.South Africa went to tea on 182 for 6, their hopes in tatters, and the finale was a formality. Anderson returned after the break to account for the obdurate du Plessis, caught behind off a loose drive for 61 to confirm a telling new record for a completed Test series – with 25 fifties but only three hundreds, this was the lowest conversion rate of all time, and spoke of both the dominance of the ball and a general lack of application with the bat.Anderson added his third of the innings, and seventh of the match, when Kagiso Rabada stabbed to cover, and looked for a moment ready to snaffle that elusive home five-wicket haul. Moeen, however, had other ideas, luring Morkel with a slap to mid-off and Olivier one ball later, to cue England’s celebrations.

Moeen's ten-for leads England rout of SA

South Africa wrapped up England’s innings midway through the afternoon session on the fourth day, leaving themselves a target of 331 to win the first Test

The Report by Alan Gardner09-Jul-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:15

‘Moeen at his best when he is aggressive’ – Root

Do you remember the first time? Joe Root certainly will after England swept South Africa aside to mark his captaincy debut with a crushing victory as 19 wickets fell in a day at Lord’s. Moeen Ali, taking full licence of the attacking brief given to him by Root, ran through a mesmerised South Africa batting order to claim 6 for 53 on the way to a maiden ten-wicket haul in Tests.Having been set 331 to win the first Test, with almost 150 overs in which to get them, South Africa were unable to even take the match into a fifth day. With the pitch offering appreciable assistance for the spin of Moeen and Liam Dawson, they subsided to 119 all out in 36.4 overs, with Temba Bavuma’s 41-ball 21 providing the most prolonged resistance. Faf du Plessis, looking on from the balcony having returned to lead the team at Trent Bridge next week, was left with much to ponder.

England unchanged for Trent Bridge

England have named an unchanged squad for Friday’s second Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge, in the wake of their 211-run victory at Lord’s.
“I didn’t know what to expect but what was pleasing was everything I asked of the lads they were very open to do and responded to it,” Joe Root, England’s captain, said.
“I wanted us to be proactive, to stay ahead of the game and when there was an opportunity, to take responsibility. Everyone at certain points did that and it can’t be a bad thing moving forward.”
Squad Joe Root (capt), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Liam Dawson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Toby Roland-Jones.

South Africa were in trouble early in their innings, going to tea on 25 for 3, with Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock their main hope of giving Root and England a fright. Only once had a team chased as many in the fourth innings to win a Lord’s Test, though Root may have recalled for a moment the occasion when he filled in as Yorkshire captain in 2014 and saw Middlesex ease to a target of 472 three wickets down on this ground. That gained him the nickname “craptain” in the Yorkshire dressing room, but it looks like England will have to come up with something more generous. In truth, Root did not have to resort to much in the way of tactical genius, as his two spinners bowled in tandem for 24 overs to finish off South Africa with time to spare on another sun-drenched evening in north London. South Africa had not lost a Test at Lord’s since 1960 but they broke that record in style. It meant their fightback during the first half of the day, when they claimed England’s last nine wickets for the addition of 114 runs became a distant memory. It could have been better still but Jonny Bairstow, who scored a vital half-century, was dropped on 7 as South Africa replicated the mistakes that were so costly to their chances in the first innings. After James Anderson had made the initial breakthrough, Heino Kuhn removed via a fine, diving catch from Bairstow down the leg side, Moeen picked up his first wicket when he brilliantly held a reflex return catch off Dean Elgar. South Africa’s stand-in captain must have feared the worst at that moment, and their fortunes sunk further when JP Duminy pulled Mark Wood straight to midwicket on the brink of tea.Moeen Ali celebrates his five-wicket haul as South Africa are rolled aside at Lord’s•Getty Images

The selection of Dawson, who made a pair with the bat, was not widely lauded beforehand but he delivered for Root when he plucked out the key wicket of Amla shortly after the interval. Moeen’s first four overs were maidens, bottling up South Africa from the Nursery End, and Dawson then produced a ripping delivery that pitched on middle and leg, spun past the groping bat and hit the back leg in front of off; Amla reviewed but in vain.De Kock and Bavuma dug in for more than 10 overs, lifting the score from 28 for 4 with a 36-run stand, but an increasingly confident England had Mo-mentum on their side. When de Kock tried to relieve some of the pressure by pulling, he only succeeded in dragging the ball into his front leg, from where it fizzed back into his stumps.Bavuma also fell trying to force an attacking shot to break England’s chokehold, a precise delivery hitting the top of off, and Moeen then had Theunis de Bruyn caught at slip and Keshav Maharaj bowled off an inside edge to record his maiden Test ten-for. Having contributed 87 to the first-innings total of 458, he became the first England player to score a fifty and take ten wickets in a Test since Ian Botham in 1980.Botham-like heroics will help keep most Test captains feeling chipper and, following his first-innings 190, Root could reflect on a perfect start to his tenure. It had been a slightly bumpier beginning to the day, however, as England lost nine wickets in 36.1 overs – though the consolation for Root was that the procession of batsmen returning to join him in the dressing room could attest to the increasing difficulty of the pitch.Bairstow was last man out, stumped off Maharaj, the spinner’s four-wicket haul a harbinger of what was to come. At lunch, England’s lead had been 279 but Bairstow and Wood scraped together valuable extra runs during a brisk ninth-wicket stand of 45. Apart from Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance, who added 10 and 11 respectively to their overnight scores, no other England batsmen managed to get into double-figures on the day.Maharaj might have removed Bairstow right at the start of his innings, only for Vernon Philander, who was fit to bowl after injuring his hand batting on the third day, to drop a simple catch at long-off. Maharaj claimed three of the seven wickets to fall in the first session, amid increasing signs of the pitch breaking up. The dismissal of Cook for 69, caught at cover attempting to lift the scoring, precipitated an England collapse of 4 for 10 in 39 balls – which would have been 5 for 19 had Bairstow’s offering been held. The evidence of the first over of the morning was that the Lord’s baize was by now a little rumpled. At least two deliveries from Philander kept low before the last jumped to hit Ballance on the glove. When Maharaj came into the attack shortly before the hour mark, the first ball of his second over went directly to slip out of the rough; the same over concluded with Root being bowled by one that didn’t turn.Cook and Ballance picked up initially in much the same mood as they guided England to the close on the third evening, a couple of tugboats towing their barge along the Thames. They had added a boundary apiece, taking their partnership to 59, before Cook suddenly weighed anchor and drove aerially into the covers, where Bavuma snaffled a sharp, diving catch.Morne Morkel continued his impressive Test by having Ballance caught behind with another exacting delivery that straightened from round the wicket and England slide’s continued with the dismissal of Root for 5 in the following over. Having seen Maharaj spin the ball sharply, Root swept a boundary but was then caught playing back and got an inside-edge on to his stumps.Ben Stokes did not have much time for reconnaissance, pinned lbw for 1 by a delivery that shot through low from Rabada. Stokes started walking as soon as it hit him, while Rabada – suspended for the next Test due to his outburst after dismissing Stokes in the first innings – kept his counsel. That left England 149 for 5 and it ought to have been 158 for 6 when Bairstow lofted Maharaj towards Philander, only for the fielder to drop it on to the rope. He gestured towards the skies, seeming to suggest that Spidercam had distracted him – but little could excuse the scale of South Africa’s defeat.

'The evidence against me is ridiculous' – Jamshed

The former Pakistan batsman said the WhatsApp conversations that the PCB intend to use against him in court were baseless

George Dobell and Umar Farooq13-Jun-2017Nasir Jamshed found the evidence of corruption against him so “flimsy” that he laughed out loud when he read about it. The former Pakistan batsman was arrested in the UK in February in connection with an investigation into corruption in the 2017 Pakistan Super League. Through its own investigations, the PCB insists Jamshed is a central figure.Four months later, the only charge the board has laid against him is for obstruction and non-cooperation in the investigations. But the PCB has indicated that further, more serious charges can be laid against him, and is waiting for the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) – which arrested Jamshed – to share more evidence with it.And Jamshed is the subject of two concurrent hearings in front of a tribunal constituted by the PCB in Lahore; the main one, in front of a three-man tribunal looking into the obstruction charges and the second, in front of a one-man disciplinary panel, is one Jamshed initiated arguing for his provisional suspension to be lifted. In the meantime, details of a key element of the board’s evidence against him have been leaked, but are, Jamshed insists, so “ridiculous” that he was “amused” when he read them in the media. Eight WhatsApp voice notes, allegedly exchanged between Jamshed and Khalid Latif – another Pakistan batsman facing charges of corruption – first found their way into the media and have now been uploaded to a standalone website. The exchanges, in Urdu, are ostensibly about one or more bat deals; the PCB’s argument is that they are code for corrupt deals.”They claim they have WhatsApp voice messages that show me talking about spot-fixing in code,” Jamshed told ESPNcricinfo in his first interview since his arrest. “But what they actually have is WhatsApp voice messages that show me talking about selling bats. There’s no code involved at all.”I’ve had an arrangement for years whereby I would sell a few CA bats and take a 10% commission. It’s no secret; I’m allowed to do it. I laughed out loud when I saw details of their evidence against me. I was amused. It’s so flimsy. It’s ridiculous.

We have every confidence in the National Crime Agency. But we have very little confidence in the PCBNasir Jamshed

“The guy they say is a bookie… works in a Honda showroom as far as I know … We spoke about him buying some bats from me, but in the end he didn’t.”If that is as good as they have, they should dismiss the case now. They have no evidence of any financial gain and, after all this time, they have not even charged me with spot-fixing or trying to fix a game. They have no real evidence against me.”Those messages, however, are not the only evidence the PCB claims to have against Jamshed. The board says there are witness statements from several players that appear to implicate him. There is also the potential NCA information, which the PCB believes could have a bearing not only on the ongoing hearings against Sharjeel Khan and Latif, but also Jamshed. In fact, the board feels it has enough to continue with proceedings against Jamshed even if he is cleared by the NCA – the PCB’s anti-corruption code being different to the UK criminal code. It has maintained since it laid charges against Jamshed, that it retains the right to level further corruption charges, and that had the board been able to meet him, it would already have done so.”The original corruption investigation is still pending and we have retained our right to bring additional corruption charges at any time we deem fit,” a PCB official told ESPNcricinfo.Jamshed lives with his British-born wife – who during these interviews often acted as his interpreter – in Birmingham, where he too is waiting for the outcome of the NCA investigation. It is expected to conclude in June, with Jamshed either cleared or informed that he will be prosecuted.”We have every confidence in the National Crime Agency,” Jamshed said. “But we have very little confidence in the PCB.”How can we trust them? They have leaked information to the media, they have made up stories about me moving house to avoid the authorities – I’ve been here in Birmingham since January – and the tribunal they have formed to hear my case is made up of former PCB employees. How can that be independent?”Nasir Jamshed has alleged he is being used as a ‘scapegoat’•AFPThe PCB’s anti-corruption code calls for a tribunal to be independent of the board. In this case, it is made up of a former chairman (Tauqir Zia), a former legal advisor (Asghar Haider) and a former employee (Wasim Bari, a former Pakistan captain who has served in a number of different board roles, including as manager of the side as recently as January 2017). None of them are currently working for the PCB, however. Latif has also challenged the constitution of the tribunal, albeit unsuccessfully so far.”I expect the NCA to clear me,” Jamshed said. “But my worry is that I could be cleared by the NCA and found guilty by the PCB. That would still prevent me from playing cricket again. I’ve asked FICA (the international players’ union) for help, but as Pakistan are not affiliated to them, there is not much they can do.”Jamshed is particularly upset by comments made by PCB chairman, Shaharyar Khan, and lawyers working for the board who say he is refusing to return to Pakistan to face charges.”He said I had changed my address and phone number in an attempt not to have any contact with them,” Jamshed said. “But I’ve been here since January. My passport and phone have both been taken off me so I can’t travel. They know that yet they continue to say I’m refusing to return to Pakistan.”The only reason I have been reluctant to meet the PCB in the UK – and yes, they did suggest a London meeting – until now is that I’m not prepared to settle.”It is this refusal to sit down with PCB investigators, who travelled to the UK in April in the hopes of meeting him, that has led to the charges of non-cooperation and obstruction.

They are so keen to show the world they have cleaned up all the corruption in Pakistan cricket they are looking for a quick resolution to this case. All I can think is that I am seen as expendableNasir Jamshed

Jamshed’s explanation of the WhatsApp messages is backed up by a couple of other sources. Jamie Boyle, the captain at Old Elizabethans CC, where Jamshed played in 2016, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that several members of the club had bought CA bats from him.”Yes, Nasir was selling bats when he was with us,” Boyle said. “There was never any secret in that. I think about four of our team ended up buying one from him.”Naeem Anjum, a first-class cricketer in Pakistan who plays club cricket in England and runs a sports shop, also confirmed he was the one providing bats for Jamshed.”It’s completely legal,” Anjum said. “I obtain a no-objection certificate from the makers and then send bats out depending on the demand. The last time I had an order from Nasir was just before the PSL.”Jamshed alleges that other players have been “coerced” into naming him to save their own careers and that he has been used as a scapegoat by a board keen to be seen as tough on corruption.”The PCB knew I was looking at a future in England,” he said. “I was hoping to play county cricket here. I would still like to after all this has been resolved.”They are so keen to show the world they have cleaned up all the corruption in Pakistan cricket they are looking for a quick resolution to this case. All I can think is that I am seen as expendable.”But some of those other players, such as Khalid Latif, have already raised their concerns about the PCB’s investigation. I’m confident the NCA will clear me and, when they have, I hope the PCB will drop this case.”Jamshed’s main tribunal hearing in which the charges against him will be heard has not begun in earnest; it was due to on May 26, but has been delayed and will resume on June 30.

Winger dropped by Ten HagTraining away from first teamJanuary exit speculated onWhy was Sancho dropped by Man Utd?

The England international winger last figured for United in their 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on August 26, with 30 minutes of game time seen off the bench in that contest. Sancho was left out of the Red Devils’ next fixture – a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal – with Erik ten Hag saying of his decision to overlook the 23-year-old: “On his performance in training, we didn’t select him. You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United.” Sancho snapped back at that comment on social media, claiming that accusations of lacking effort in training were “completely untrue” and that he had been made a “scapegoat” for some time.

Sancho has not featured for United since incurring the wrath of Ten Hag and questioning the treatment he has received from the demanding Dutch tactician. The Red Devils’ boss is said to want a face-to-face apology before he relaxes his stance and considers bringing Sancho back into the fold. There has been no call for Sancho to apologise in front of his team-mates, but United said in a statement on September 14 that he will remain absent from first-team training “pending resolution of a squad discipline issue”.

Why can’t Sancho use Man Utd’s first-team training rooms?

While working away from the senior squad at United’s training base at Carrington, Sancho has been doing solo sessions or linking up with the club’s academy players. The Red Devils’ U21 coach, Mark Dempsey, has been helping out at times. According to , Sancho is not allowed in the senior facilities at all, meaning that he has to park his car at the academy building and get ready there. He is reportedly forced to lock himself into the changing rooms at the academy due to safeguarding directives – ensuring that he does not mix with underage players.

As well as being ostracised from first-team training, Sancho is also reportedly banned from United’s canteen. Rather than mingle with club colleagues as they go about their business, the England winger instead sees his food brought to him across the walkway that links the academy and senior facilities. Sancho then has to eat out of a lunch box before making his way home.
