Man Utd could land Rice clone in swoop for £42m Mainoo partner

It’s fair to say that among the disappointments of the 2023/24 campaign, there were a handful of shining lights that pointed towards a positive future at Manchester United.

One of those was most definitely Kobbie Mainoo, who excelled at the heart of the midfield under Erik ten Hag from the very second he stepped foot on the field against Everton in November.

Kobbie Mainoo

At just 19 years of age, he has the maturity and quality to perform at the highest level against the very best, as shown by his FA Cup-winning goal against Manchester City.

With the brilliant Mainoo in mind, let’s take a look at a Red Devils target who could prove to be United’s very own Declan Rice.

Man Utd’s recent transfer activity

Jarrad Branthwaite has been the most heavily linked player to Old Trafford so far this summer, but his move could prove difficult given Everton’s extreme demands.

At the other end of the field, Joshua Zirkzee is a name that’s been mentioned in reports, as United could look to activate his £33.7m release clause.

However, it’s in the middle of the park where United are looking to reinforce, with Edson Alvarez and now Conor Gallagher listed as targets.

According to reports from Spain, Man United have entered the race to sign the Chelsea midfielder this summer alongside Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

It’s said that the Blues would be willing to sell the England international for £42m, as they look to raise funds for the player viewed as replaceable.

Gallagher could be Man Utd’s own Rice

Under the influence of Mauricio Pochettino, Gallagher became such a vital cog in the Chelsea system, regardless of what position he was deployed in.

Just like all the best leaders in the Premier League, the academy graduate led by example in every single match, displaying determination and the desperation to succeed.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Throughout the campaign, the versatile midfielder started 37 Premier League games, which would have been 38 had he not received a red card against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The former Crystal Palace loanee also proved that he can become a match-winner, becoming influential in the final third with five goals and seven assists.

It’s fair to say that Gallagher has absolutely everything you’d look for in a modern-day midfielder, and the same can be said for Rice.

As you can see from the table, it’s no surprise that Rice and Gallagher have been classified as ‘similar players’ by FBref.

England midfielder Declan Rice

Firstly, the duo are both technically gifted and have the ability to work in tight spaces, control a game, and help the side during the build-up phase, as shown by their touches, passes completed, and progressive passes.

This would make Gallagher an ideal partner for Mainoo, as between them, they’d be able to dictate the tempo of the game as well as adopt the playing out from the back approach.

On the other hand, Gallagher is known for being an absolute “machine” when it comes to off-the-ball actions and intensity, as dubbed by teammate Moises Caicedo.

Just like Rice, the 24-year-old is full of energy, and he can cover ground with ease due to his athleticism, which would be a welcomed addition from Mainoo’s perspective, especially as he was partnered by Casemiro last season, who “cannot run,” as per football creator Liam Canning.

Together, Mainoo and Gallagher would be an absolute nightmare to play against due to the intensity, technical quality, and defensive security they’d bring to the team, which United simply didn’t have enough of last season.

Overall, signing Gallagher could prove to be a masterclass by Man United, especially given that he’s a Rice clone and he’d thrive next to Mainoo, which is why ten Hag must swoop for him before the window slams shut in August.

He wants Man Utd: INEOS leading race for dream Mainoo signing

High on Manchester United's priority list before the start of the next Premier League campaign, is finding the perfect partner for their jewel in the crown, Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo who made 35 appearances in his debut senior season at the club, scored five goals, and provided three assists. His stellar season earned him his first England call up, making the squad for Euro 2024, and even starting four games at the tournament.

This is the level of talent INEOS are working around the clock to find a partner for, so they can fully unlock his potential, and create a midfield for the present and future success of the club.

Man Utd's search for a midfielder

According to a report from TEAMtalk, United are interested in free agent, Adrien Rabiot, who has set his sights on joining Erik ten Hag's side, despite interest from Liverpool and Chelsea in the midfielder.

The reports suggest Rabiot hasn't yet decided his future, as he is looking for a 'lucrative' contract, as it will likely be his last significant contract as a player. The 29-year-old is reportedly after wages similar to Casemiro's £10.5m a year.

Rabiot made 35 appearances last season for Juventus in all competitions, scoring five goals, providing three assists, and totalling 3,012 minutes of football.

A potential Rabiot and Mainoo partnership

Rabiot was said to have the "strength of [Paul] Pogba" by legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, whilst also stating he has the "dynamism of Marchisio". Comparisons to such legendary Juventus players, one of whom is also ex-United, is very heavy praise indeed.

And now it could be time for Rabiot to make the same move as his compatriot, leaving Juventus (as a free agent) and making the move over to Manchester. But how could the Frenchman – who is also a towering presence like the 6 foot 3 Pogba – provide balance alongside academy star Mainoo?

The first standout factor for this duo would be their height difference, Mainoo measuring at 5 foot 9, compared to the lofty 6 foot 4 frame of Rabiot. The little and large duo would provide a good balance for mobility and aerial prowess in the middle of the park, Rabiot averaging 1.83 aerials won per 90.

Both players do like to get forward, ranking in the top 20% for Non-Penalty Goals among midfielders in the top five leagues. Therefore, this could leave gaps in behind, and they would have to form a dynamic of which one sits, and which one attacks the box alongside skipper, Bruno Fernandes.

Mainoo's ability to beat his man, even in tight zones, makes him a powerful weapon further forward, completing 1.46 successful take-ons per 90, and ranking in the top 8% for this metric among midfielders in the top five leagues.

Adrien Rabiot for Juventus

The France international could prove to be a good fit for the Red Devils, adding height, power and dynamism alongside Mainoo – as well as Fernandes – in midfield. However, it would be interesting to see which one takes the more defensive role, or if perhaps a number six was to accompany them in a midfield three.

Aymeric Laporte to the rescue: Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr bailed out by late goal in AFC Champions League win against Esteghal in Dubai

    TELL ME MORE

Ronaldo was spotted having a long chat with Sadio Mane before kick-off. While it was hardly audible, the body language suggested that the Portuguese was urging his striker-partner for more link-ups and quick give-and-goes to break down Esteghlal. However, 45 minutes later, the duo hardly combined and the visitors looked sluggish as they strived to slice open a well-drilled defence. Although Ronaldo did create the two best chances for his side in the first-half he was seen shouting at his teammates, urging them to communicate better, before walking down the tunnel shaking his head in disappointment.

The match was clamouring for fresh impetus and Stefano Pioli responded by making three changes before action resumed in the second half. Despite the introduction of fresh faces, their performance hardly improved. The definitive final ball was still elusive and Esteghlal had little trouble keeping them at bay. However, with 10 minutes to go, Ronaldo once again emerged as the saviour with a stunning header from a corner. Although the goalkeeper somehow managed to get his hands on it, the rebound fell kindly for Laporte who made no mistake to tap the ball into a gaping net.

    THE MVP

Ronaldo was arguably the best player on the pitch in what was a largely frustrating night for Al-Nassr. The spotlight was firmly on him which opened up spaces for his teammates and the 39-year-old looked to make the most of those. Although he didn't get on the scoresheet, he was the architect behind Al-Nassr's goal which helped them earn the three points on the road.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Mane has blown hot and cold this campaign and the Senegalese was once again an anonymous figure for Al-Nassr during the continental fixture. Soon after taking the lead, Pioli took him off and brought on a 19-year-old Wesley, who put on an impressive cameo and could have even got his name on the scoresheet, but for the woodwork. Warning signs for Mane!

  • WHAT COMES NEXT FOR AL-NASSR?

After churning out a hard-fought win in the Champions League, Ronaldo and Co. will shift their focus back on domestic action as they are set to face Al-Kholood away from home on Friday in the Saudi Pro League.

Chelsea offered £205,000-per-week PSG star to grant key wish for Maresca

Chelsea eyeing new star attackers in busy summer window

Chelsea hold new talks with Premier League club over signing £70m "talent"

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 19, 2024

The official arrivals of Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Estevao Willian and Renato Veiga cost Chelsea around £93 million in total, while deals for Aaron Anselmino and Caleb Wiley most recently have added a further £25.5 million (The Athletic).

Regardless of their spending so far, it remains the case that Chelsea could still make more signings before deadline day on August 30. The west Londoners are believed to be in the market for a new winger, with Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams on Chelsea's radar.

Maresca has also made it clear he wants a new striker behind-the-scenes, according to some reports, which led to a failed bid for Atletico Madrid starlet Samu Omorodion.

Other marquee names have been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge, like Napoli star Victor Osimhen, but a move for the Nigerian appears less and less likely as the window ticks on due to the sheer size of a potential deal.

Chelsea have considered Lille star Jonathan David as a cheaper option, but the Blues even tried their hand with an audacious approach for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak at the start of this month.

Both Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson were responsible for the majority of Chelsea's goalscoring output last season, but as previously stated, it is believed Maresca is keen on bringing in a new striker to ease the burden.

Chelsea offered PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani

According to HITC, PSG may have just handed them a solution to grant Maresca's wish in the form of Randal Kolo Muani.

The outlet claims Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Kolo Muani from PSG, as they look to offload strikers and make room for Osimhen. The Ligue 1 champions are attempting to strike a deal with Napoli over the Nigerian, but will need to offload both Kolo Muani and Goncalo Ramos to free up squad space.

Randal Kolo Muani

The 25-year-old, who's been called a "complete" striker by Kylian Mbappe, bagged 23 goals and 17 assists in the 22/23 season for Eintracht Frankfurt, before joining PSG last summer.

Kolo Muani, on around £205,000-per-week at PSG, hasn't quite reached those same heights at the Parc des Princes, but perhaps Maresca could offer him a fresh start, making this one to watch.

Crystal Palace make £12m+ bid to sign "wonderful" new attacker for Glasner

Crystal Palace have reportedly submitted an offer to sign a "wonderful" new attacker for Oliver Glasner.

Crystal Palace searching for Olise replacement

The Eagles have already signed a new centre-back in Chadi from Real Betis and, more recently, Palace also secured the services of attacking midfielder Daichi Kamada, who left Lazio as a free agent.

After Kamada, Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that Glasner is looking for at least “one more" signing: “I expect Crystal Palace to do something absolutely because Oliver Glasner, apart from obviously Daichi Kamada joining, wants one more player.”

ByCharlie Smith Jul 11, 2024

Attention appears to be on landing a new attacker following the departure of Michael Olise, who has officially completed his move to German giants Bayern Munich. Steve Parish spoke highly of Olise following his exit, telling the club’s official website after the move was announced:

“We are hugely proud of what Michael has achieved at Crystal Palace, a club where he has developed greatly as a player. We respect his desire to further test himself at the highest level of world football, and I would like to personally wish him the very best for his next adventure with Bayern Munich in Germany which I’m sure we will all follow closely.”

Former Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, now at Marseille, has been linked with a return to the Premier League with Palace, whereas Juventus’ Matias Soule is also believed to be a player of interest. Now, it appears as if Parish and Dougie Freedman have made a move for a potential Olise replacement, with an offer submitted.

Crystal Palace make Marcus Edwards bid

According to reports from Portugal, relayed by Sport Witness, Crystal Palace have made an offer to sign Marcus Edwards from Sporting CP. It is claimed that the opening bid is worth €15m (£12.6m), however, that isn’t expected to be enough to strike a deal, with Sporting CP wanting up to €30m.

Sporting winger Marcus Edwards.

Edwards also has admirers in Saudi Arabia in Al Nassr, however, the former Tottenham winger isn’t keen on a move, something which could help Palace in their pursuit.

The 25-year-old, who has also been linked with a return to Spurs in recent months, has impressed at Sporting CP in recent seasons, scoring 21 goals and providing 26 assists in 110 appearances. Primarily a right-winger, Edwards can also play in a variety of attacking positions so may provide plenty of versatility to Glasner's side in the final third.

Previously dubbed a “wonderful player” who is a “joy to watch” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, is currently valued at €20m by Transfermarkt, so it may not come as a surprise that Palace’s opening offer looks likely to be rejected. However, a move could still be one to watch, especially after the club sold Olise for a reported £60m.

Imagine him & Chalobah: Sheffield Wednesday targeting attacking "threat"

If Sheffield Wednesday break the bank and make yet another signing this summer transfer window, the number of incomings through the door at Hillsborough will rise to double digits.

Wednesday's ninth capture of the busy transfer window saw Nathaniel Chalobah enter the building on a free transfer, as the Owls look to add strength in depth all over the pitch, ahead of what many in South Yorkshire will be anticipating as a positive season to come.

Away from signing the former West Bromwich Albion midfielder, however, Wednesday are setting their sights on more new recruits up top, with one target even formerly playing alongside Chalobah at youth level.

Wednesday looking at ex Chelsea striker

Football journalist Mike McGrath is now reporting that the Owls have fielded a bid for Ike Ugbo to return on a permanent basis, but other clubs are also noted to be having a look at the 25-year-old forward.

McGrath states that there is interest from other second-tier sides and even from the Premier League, but Chalobah signing on the dotted in South Yorkshire could spur Ugbo into wanting to rejoin his former loan employers even more.

Chalobah revealed after signing for Wednesday that the current Troyes man was in conversation with the 29-year-old about the potential switch and could have played a role in the former Watford midfielder choosing Hillsborough as his next onward destination.

What Ugbo would offer Wednesday

Playing a pivotal part in Wednesday unbelievably surviving the drop last season away from chatting with Chalobah, Ugbo's apparent glowing words about the club to Chalobah surely means he'd be revelling in the idea of a reunion soon, particularly if the Owls are on the up and not looking at another campaign stuck in the relegation mire.

The former Chelsea youngster would end up netting seven goals from 19 games when loaned out to Wednesday last season, popping up with crucial strikes along the way, to help make Danny Rohl's dream of keeping the Owls afloat a reality.

The South Yorkshire titans are arguably crying out for more reinforcements up top as well, owing to the fact the experienced Lee Gregory was released this summer, alongside the youthfulness of the other options available to Rohl in Bailey Cadamarteri who is only 19 years of age and new recruit McNeill who is just 20.

With Michael Smith also actively on the lookout for a new club to call his own after failing to move away in January, Ugbo's added firepower – summarised above – will be very much needed if he does move back to England.

Ugbo's 11 goals last season in Championship action, with four strikes coming his way when on the books at Cardiff City earlier in the campaign, came about from just 9.88 xG being accumulated, with the 25-year-old only needing an average of 19.5 touches per game too in order leave his lasting mark.

The £15.5k-per-week striker – as per Capology – certainly lived up to his billing from football journalist Ben Steiner in 2022 of being a "threat", starring in front of goal for the Owls with Ugbo knocking on the door of a starting spot in the Canada international side.

Whilst Ugbo would offer more goals, Chalobah would also allow Wednesday to forget about the absence of Will Vaulks in the middle of the park, with the pair looking forward to potentially playing alongside each other again, after they both began their football educations at Stamford Bridge.

Chalobah could be the man who ensures Ugbo sees more of the ball in attack. It's unlikely given the former's position on the pitch that they'd be playing too many combinations but his ability to break up the play could put Wednesday and Ugbo on their way to earning more chances in front of goal.

If he did return, it really would be another cherry on the top of the Wednesday cake, as excitement builds in the air as to what the Owls could be capable of next season if everything goes according to plan.

Imagine him & McNeill: Sheffield Wednesday could sign "magic" winger

Sheffield Wednesday will look to sign even more explosive attacking talents this summer.

Kemar Roach: 'I have never been in a situation like that before'

Small targets. Big drama. The story has done the rounds for as long as there has been Test cricket and yet another riveting chapter was added to it at Sabina Park.West Indies were set 168 to win. But they ended up battered and bruised and barely standing as Pakistan, and especially Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali, went into mode.A match that had ebbed and flowed, forever refusing to reveal a clear winner, had come to an unbelievable climax. One team needed 17 runs. The other needed one wicket. Anything was possible.”I have never been in a situation like that before, batting with the tail,” Kemar Roach, a professional cricketer of 13 years, said after play. “I am part of the tail, so for me it was to go out there and believe. That was the biggest thing – to believe and stay positive – and it worked, and I give thanks.”Roach’s strength of will translated into 30 unbeaten, match-winning runs. His experience shepherded the 19-year old Seales, who had already announced that he was ready for the big stage by picking up 5 for 55 on Saturday, through a last-wicket partnership that just wouldn’t be broken, even across four high-pressure overs.”The plan was to just stay positive. That’s me,” Roach said. “I was just trying to take on every ball as it came. This is by far the most important innings so far. I was just trying to pick the gaps and run hard. My advice to Jayden was just protect the stumps. The biggest threat is the straight ball. He did it very well. He is a star for the future. His five wickets today speaks wonders about our cricket. All the best to him, and I wish him a great career!”Seales’ contribution to West Indies’ victory – eight wickets and an equally crucial two runs off 13 balls – earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. It also left him speechless. “Test cricket has been a dream come true for me,” he managed in the end as he picked up his prize and walked away during the presentation. So it was up to his captain to come up with some suitable words, much as it had been down to him to come up with a suitable total in the first innings. Kraigg Brathwaite’s 97 off 221 deliveries was the highest individual score across all four innings of an extremely tight game. “We never lost hope,” he said. “It was truly amazing. I thought Pakistan bowled really well. It is about patience – who has more patience will come out on top.”Last week, Phil Simmons, the West Indies coach, had pulled his batters up, demanding more runs from them, but he has rarely had a bad thing to say about his bowlers. And in the end, with light fading and tensions rising, they were the ones that stood up to be counted yet again.

Beer chaos at The Oval

From Richard Seeckts

Cricinfo25-Feb-2013″It wasn’t until I got there that I realised one of the 20s was the duration in minutes of the queue for beer.” PP of Kent, 2008.On the evidence of last week’s Surrey v Sussex match, things have got worse, not better, in 2009. Twenty20 games at Surrey’s south London ground are advertised as turbo-charged cricket. The experience in the stands has not been so thrilling.Spectators visiting The Oval for ICC World Twenty20 matches should be reassured that “the problem with the (bar) tills has been rectified and we have had no further problems”. This is wonderful news, though it comes too late for those who endured woefully inadequate bar provision at last week’s Surrey v Sussex Twenty20 match, when the recent dry spell took on another meaning. That Tuesday evening saw people wanting an after work pint at the cricket queuing for up to half an hour to be served. ‘Man waits 25 minutes for beer’ is not, in isolation, a matter of great concern to anybody. However, ‘World’s oldest Test venue fails to cater for crowd of 7,500’ doesn’t sound so clever. The problem with standing in a queue for 25 minutes during a Twenty20 game is that you miss about seven overs of action, or one third of an innings. And if you fancy a second, or third pint during the evening, you’ll see less cricket than on a good day at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.I don’t know the exact nature of the alleged (and now resolved) bar till problem, but I do know that Surrey CCC infuriated many spectators last week, compounding their blanket ban on taking alcohol into the ground by making it virtually impossible to obtain inside. Surrey claim that the ground was one third full, and that five of seven public bars were open. It’s an interesting claim when the shutters were down on every drinks outlet bar one (pardon the pun) at the Vauxhall end of the ground. If true, it doesn’t bode well for an Ashes Test in August.Whatever the cause of the chaos, all major sports venues have an obligation to cater for their paying customers swiftly and efficiently, enabling them to optimise their time watching the main event. When getting a drink becomes the main event, something has gone horribly wrong. Tickets are not cheap at The Oval, a cheeseburger and chips costs £8, a pint of beer £3.50, and a replica shirt is £39.99, if your favourite colour happens to be brown. The public deserves better. The Oval was, however, amply prepared for the queues at the bars to develop into full-blown riots. 190 security / stewards were in attendance, gloriously intimidating in their fluorescent jackets, many radio-linked to Big Brother and ready to pounce on any sign of drunken (fat chance) or inappropriate behaviour. Most of the spectators were family groups on a half term treat or professional types in suits who had just rolled out of their offices. An east London football derby it was not, and yet there was a steward for every forty spectators.Needless to say they had no riots to crush, perhaps we should have asked the ‘Green Team’ to fetch the beers for us.
