European club considering move for "outstanding" £40k-p/w Tottenham player

da pinup bet: After losing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Marseille this summer, Tottenham Hotspur could be about to bid farewell to another player, with a European club now considering a move.

Tottenham transfer news

da bet sport: It's been a mixed summer for those in north London, who have so far welcomed just two reinforcements in the form of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. The latter particularly stands out as a solid piece of business, but given that the Leeds United academy graduate is still just 18 years old, it remains to be seen how much he can impact Ange Postecoglou's starting side. And whilst welcoming a young player, Spurs have sold an experienced midfielder in Hojbjerg.

The Dane may not be the last player to head for the exit door, either, as Daniel Levy gets ruthless this summer. According to reports in Turkey (via The Spurs Web), Galatasaray have now joined the race to sign Emerson Royal from Tottenham this summer, putting themselves alongside the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Milan to sign the right-back before the window slams shut at the end of next month.

Earning a reported £40k-a-week, Royal has struggled at times in north London and the arrival of Gray hands Postecoglou the right-back cover he needs for Pedro Porro. With European clubs lining up to sign Royal, it would be a deal worth sanctioning for the Lilywhites. What's more, Galatasaray could kill two birds with one stone for Spurs given that they're also reportedly interested in signing Bryan Gil – although he seems close to a move to La Liga outfit Girona.

richarlison-bryan-gil-tottenham-opinion

With the Premier League campaign approaching, Spurs have just a matter of weeks to hand Postecoglou the strongest squad possible to open his second season in charge.

Tottenham no longer need "outstanding" Royal

Considering Royal struggled for starts last term, the emergence of Gray could only make matters worse next season. As things stand, the Lilywhites simply no longer need the Brazilian, despite Postecoglou's praise last season. The Spurs boss said via Football.london: "I see it on a daily basis, others don’t, but if you watch Emerson Royal train every day, you’d think he plays every game.

"He’s just outstanding with his attitude and demeanour around the place. There’s no time for anyone to feel down. When you see a guy like Emerson, and we’ve got a few in that boat this year like Fraser [Forster] or Ben [Davies], they train so hard every day, always have the greatest disposition in terms of their demeanour, it doesn’t give anyone else an excuse to not feel up for it."

A move to the likes of Milan, Dortmund or, indeed, Galatasaray wouldn't exactly be a bad next step either, but Spurs will want to make sure that they're cashing in on their right-back even if he is surplus to requirements in north London. With a month left until the window slams shut, the Lilywhites still have plenty to do.

Gloucestershire name Steve Snell as first performance director

Appointment set to be followed by process to confirm new head coach

Matt Roller27-Oct-2021Gloucestershire have appointed Steve Snell, their former wicketkeeper, as the club’s first-ever performance director.Richard Dawson, the club’s long-standing head coach, was appointed as the ECB’s elite performance pathway coach in March, with his assistant Ian Harvey promoted to interim head coach for the 2021 season. The club announced in early August that they would recruit a performance director before appointing a full-time replacement for Dawson, inviting applications from candidates involved in other sports and with backgrounds in talent identification and development. The club captaincy is also vacant after Chris Dent stood down late in the 2021 season. Will Brown, Gloucestershire’s chief executive, said that the calibre of candidates had been “incredibly strong” and revealed the involvement of Michael Klinger, the former club captain, and Mo Bobat, the ECB’s performance director, in the recruitment process, as well as several senior figures at the club.Related

Snell, who made 73 first-team appearances for Gloucestershire between 2006 and 2010, has been on Somerset’s coaching staff since 2014, most recently working as the head of their talent pathway. He has played a role in the development of several young players, including recent academy graduates like Tom Banton, Lewis Goldsworthy and Will Smeed.Gloucestershire said that Snell would be “responsible for delivering success on the field by developing a vision and strategy that puts the team in a position to win titles” and reiterated their ambition to win a white-ball trophy within the next two years, as well as a first-ever County Championship by 2025. Gloucestershire will play in Division One next season, belatedly reaping the rewards of their 2019 promotion.”I delighted to be joining a club with ambitious plans and an extremely talented playing squad and staff,” Snell said. “We have an experienced core group of players which will be looking to build on the 2021 season. Will Brown and the board have made some exciting additions to the squad that I’m confident will help to push the club further forward, and that the supporters will continue to enjoy watching and cheering on.”Gloucestershire is a club that’s rich in tradition but is also an organisation that has exciting points of difference. It’s imperative that we respect the tradition and culture of the club but we also develop our ability to innovate, prepare and develop a cricket team that can achieve sustained success on the field.”Brown said: “We want to win trophies and I’m confident that Steve, working alongside our talented playing and coaching squad, will help us to achieve sustainable success. This is an incredibly exciting time to be a part of Gloucestershire Cricket: we’re a club on the up and we’re looking forward to the challenge of playing in Division One of the County Championship next season.”

Sunderland hit gold on star who is now worth more than Ballard & Neil

Sunderland supporters will be hoping for a dramatically better season coming up after settling for a dire 16th-place finish last campaign in the Championship which left a bad taste in many a mouth on Wearside.

Regis Le Bris' appointment was a left-field one to say the least, after the Black Cats had gone without a permanent boss for some time, but the Frenchman could be the breath of fresh air Sunderland need from the dug-out to mount a promotion charge again.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

The ex-Lorient manager will be keeping his fingers crossed that the club's star men are still at his disposal next season to make the task of competing near the top end of the division less challenging.

One of those players, away from the likes of Jack Clarke and Co is Northern Irishman Trai Hume, who has never looked back since moving to England in 2022, having walked away from his native country.

Trai Hume's time at Sunderland

Hume has amassed 84 appearances for Sunderland in that time span, with the 22-year-old ever-present all of last season in league action, as his importance shone through for the Black Cats regardless of who was occupying the dug-out.

Trai Hume

Filling in at left-back 11 times across those 46 games he managed to accumulate, as well as occasionally even playing in the heart of the defence, Hume's adaptability made him a player that could be relied upon, even when Sunderland were suffering with poor result after poor result.

The six-time Northern Ireland international, who also has six goal contributions next to his name donning Sunderland red and white, has begun to attract interest from higher-up suitors as a result, with Leeds United one party keen on the tenacious full-back.

Unai Emery's Aston Villa are also supposed admirers of Hume's work – who was even described as being "outstanding" by football journalist Josh Bunting last season – with Sunderland potentially facing a losing battle to keep a firm grip on the 22-year-old beyond this transfer window.

The only plus side of Hume being moved on is the fact Sunderland would be set to make some serious profit on the former Linfield man, having only signed the defender for a meagre fee of £150k from the Northern Irish side.

Hume's transfer value in 2024

The in-demand defender is now worth even more than Black Cats stalwarts Daniel Ballard and Dan Neil, according to Football Transfers, as Sunderland brace themselves now for bids to come their way.

As per Football Transfers, Hume is worth £6m in the Stadium of Light camp, which is a significant rise from what the Mackems first paid for the 22-year-old two years ago.

Ballard and Neil, on the contrary, are both worth just £5m respectively, despite both players also being integral to the Black Cats cause, having only missed seven league clashes between them last campaign.

1. Anthony Patterson

£10m

2. Jack Clarke

£7m

3. Jobe Bellingham

£7m

4. Trai Hume

£6m

5. Pierre Ekwah

£5m

Looking at the table above, Hume is only below the likes of Jobe Bellingham, Jack Clarke and Anthony Patterson when it comes to the most valued assets at the Stadium of Light, with the Northern Irishman earning Sunderland a pretty penny if sold on soon.

It would be a big loss for the Wearside outfit still, with Timothee Pembele the only other recognised right-back in the squad alongside Sunderland's issues in the left-back area with injury, but the Black Cats wouldn't be able to begrudge Hume moving on if Villa came knocking.

Le Bris will be nervous at the amount of possible outgoings, but with the likes of Alan Browne joining the ranks, it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom.

Kurtis Patterson hopes New South Wales captaincy aids batting revival

Kurtis Patterson hopes having the New South Wales captaincy to focus on will help free up his batting as he searches for a return to the form that earned him two Test caps three seasons ago.Since playing for Australia, and scoring a maiden century in his second outing against Sri Lanka, Patterson has endured a frustrating couple of seasons: first through injury which disrupted his 2019-2020 campaign followed by a struggle for runs last year as he averaged just 21.29 in the Sheffield Shield. He admitted considering whether it was the right time take over the Sheffield Shield captaincy from Peter Nevill amid looking for a batting revival. Having had a taste of the role at the end of last season, though, he believes having other areas of responsibility will be an advantage.”I guess being able to do it last year doing for the one-day final and the last couple of Shield games was good for me to see how I reacted and how I thought with it,” he said. “To be honest with you, half of my battle with my batting is getting myself out of my own head, so the captaincy does that naturally because you can’t just think about yourself, you have to think about the rest of the team.Related

“I certainly felt that when I was batting last year as captain that it allowed me to kind of see the bigger picture. But it certainly was something that I thought about because at the end of the day, even now that I am captain, first and foremost I’m a batter, certainly when we are batting it’s no longer Kurtis the captain I have to perform as a batter.”It’s something that I probably won’t really know the answer to until we’re in the depths of the season, but last year I felt really comfortable, it didn’t feel like it hindered my batting at all. It felt if anything like it helped. So looking forward to hopefully seeing that come through again this year.”Although Patterson’s only substantial score last season was the 102 he made against South Australia, he felt he had found something close to his best rhythm during the Sheffield Shield final against Queensland, where he scored 43 in the first innings against a strong attack in demanding conditions. That had coincided with him delving back into footage of the run of scores he had in the 2018-19 summer, which included twin centuries for a Cricket Australia XI in Hobart and the Test century in Canberra, as well as a conversation with New South Wales batting coach Chandika Hathurusingha.”I feel like I’d got to a place that I was satisfied with before the Shield final and it wasn’t until before the final that I’d looked back on my lead up, my Test series I played, and the Australia A game,” Patterson said. “I watched some footage and just tried to focus on one or two of the basic things that I did well. Really they were just being still at point of release and looking to get forward.”I had a really good chat with Chandika, just spoke about simplifying things as much as we can. I only scored 40-odd in that Shield final but in terms of just the way I felt, it felt like I was back to my normal self, which was nice in a way but also a bit disappointing that it took me the whole season to work that out.”I think that was just I was just lacking confidence last year coming off coming off the injury the year before, there was probably an extra layer of thought in my head that probably didn’t need to be there. It was a challenging year for everyone. It’s been nice to take a step back and take learnings out of it.”

The Blues crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the last-16 stage, losing 2-0 to Newcastle despite beating them at Stamford Bridge a few days earlier. Maresca opted to include Palmer in the squad as a substitute and the 22-year-old did not even get the call to come on with his side trailing by two goals.

    WHAT MARESCA SAID

The former Leicester boss explained his decision to leave Palmer out, saying: "Simply because I think Joao [Felix] and Christo [Nkunku] were doing very good. The reason why [we brought him] was in case we needed Cole but Joao and Christo were doing well so there was no need to change."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer's omission is probably deeper than what Maresca explained in his post-match press conference. The Blues are heavily reliant on the young England star and therefore must manage his minutes coming into a busy period. Palmer was also left out of Chelsea's squad for the Conference League and is seemingly being prioritised for Premier League action instead.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

A big match is on the horizon for Maresca's side on Sunday when Chelsea take on Manchester United at Old Trafford. There is no doubting Palmer will be involved in that game as the London team look to break into the Premier League's top four.

Suryakumar Yadav: How I build from here is all in my hands

He has made use of all chances at international level and wants to improve at getting deep in the innings

Saurabh Somani24-Jul-20214:04

India series reviews – ‘Suryakumar the biggest takeaway’

Suryakumar Yadav is only five-innings-old in international cricket. You wouldn’t know that, looking at him bat in any of those games. He’s looked nerve-less, decisive and crisp in his stroke-play, calm and confident in his batting.Having made his debut when already past 30 has meant, perhaps, that Yadav might not have the same length of international cricket to look forward to that the Prithvi Shaws and Ishan Kishans have, but it’s also meant he’s come into international cricket with a greater understanding of his game. He made an immediate impact in the T20Is against England in March, and given a go in the ODI side, he’s returned a Player-of-the-Series performance against Sri Lanka.India lost the third one-dayer, but took the series 2-1, and Yadav played a key hand in each of the three games. Starting out in his career, Yadav has got the fine balance of soaking it all in after years of waiting for it, versus the hunger because of a wait that lasted as long as it did.”Obviously, everyone dreams of playing for India. It has been a lot of effort, lot of grind, lot of patience behind this,” Yadav said after the third ODI against Sri Lanka. “It has been worth the wait, and I’m really happy about it. From here on, how I build it is all in my hands. I’m really excited for the journey ahead.”Yadav had always been a batter with plenty of sparkle. But he pinpointed returning to Mumbai Indians in 2018 as the turning point, after which his game has gone to a new level. It’s borne out by the numbers too. Since the 2018-19 season, Yadav has averaged 55.56 in List A cricket, at a strike rate of 131.88. In T20 cricket, his average has been 37.60 at a strike rate of 147.30.”I’ve always been batting the same way as I am now,” Yadav said. “But yes, after I came to Mumbai Indians in 2018, things started changing a bit. I got to know what my responsibility is, how do I go about my game, how can I take it one step ahead. That’s when I started practicing even more. Talked to all the players who knew me really well from the last five-six years.”Yadav’s scores in the ODIs, 31*, 53, and 40 – all scored at better than a run-a-ball – point to how quickly he got into the groove, although he did express disappointment at not carrying on in the second and third games. He was looking in command during the second game, steering India’s chase after half the side had been out, when one moment of indecision meant he was trapped in front. While India won that match on the back of Deepak Chahar’s heroics with the bat, Yadav’s fall in the third ODI – he was once again the key wicket – meant there was no similar recovery.”I’m disappointed about that,” Yadav said. “The way I started in the first game, I got good confidence. In the second game, it was the perfect situation to win a game for the team. But that time too, it was not the way I play and I got out. Really disappointed with that. In the third game too, there was a good opportunity today to hold one end and try and play till the end, but couldn’t do it. That’s two things I’m really keeping in mind, how do I build from here? But that’s how you learn and move forward.”It’s perhaps a sign of the new-found consistency that Yadav has found in his game. He’s in a patch of form where he’s not had a ‘bad’ season, but cutting down on failures has not come at the expense of any inventiveness. Yadav still executes the ramps, the paddle-scoops, the drives, the flicks through the on-side while seemingly off balance.”I’ve been a Mumbai boy,” he said. “Growing up in Mumbai, the types of pitches you get in club games and in domestic cricket are very challenging. So there you automatically think what strokes you have to play on those kinds of wickets, and the same thing I’ve been carrying to the international stage. I’ll be doing the same thing. Just trying to keep things simple, following my routines.”The game remains the same. There’s no change in the game, you play against any team, any level, you just have to go out and do the same things. What I do in domestic cricket, what I do in the nets, I try and do the same thing be it IPL, be it an international game. I just like to be myself. I like to go out there and enjoy. You must have seen, I just like to run when I get an opportunity to bat. I really enjoy that moment.”For now, Yadav is doing the running, and ensuring that even when India field a full-strength team, he’s in serious contention to be part of it, whether in ODIs or T20Is. Like he said, how he builds his career is in his hands. So far, those hands have done a pretty good job.

BBL considering radical version of timed out rule to speed up play

Players could have to face up within a certain time limit to avoid allowing the bowler a free delivery at exposed stumps

The BBL is close to introducing a radical version of the timed out rule for the upcoming season in an attempt to find ways to speed up play.Cricket Australia’s playing conditions committee is looking into the stricter monitoring of time between the fall of a wicket and the next ball and a potential penalty for players that take too long. The current Timed Out law, 40.1.1, states: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be in position to take guard or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”This law has been previously updated in CA’s BBL playing conditions to state that players must be in position within 60 seconds. However, the playing condition has never been enforced with examples of players taking more than two minutes to face up without any consequence. The BBL is now considering a 75-second limit however it is understood players would not be given timed out should they fail to meet the time allowed. Instead, one proposal is that the bowler will get a version of a batting free-hit with the batter to stand aside and allow a free delivery at the stumps. If the bowler did not hit the stumps, the batter would be able to start their innings. In reality, it is unlikely that it will come into play given batters will be on notice to get to the crease promptly, with any such playing condition acting as a deterrent against unnecessary delays.BBL general manager Alistair Dobson told ESPNcricinfo that the exact details of the rule were still being considered.”We know Big Bash fans want to watch fast-paced, exciting cricket on TV and in the stadium,” he said. “We have spent the off-season looking at ways to keep the game moving and are close to finalising what this might look like.”The Hundred introduced a rule this season to speed up play from a bowling perspective with an extra player moved inside the circle for each over that is not bowled within the allotted time, but it is unlikely that will be introduced in the BBL this season due to various broadcast commitments. The BBL has not been afraid to tinker with T20 cricket after introducing three new playing conditions last year with the Bash Boost, the X Factor, and the Power Surge coming into the competition with mixed success. All three are likely to remain this season with the Power Surge proving a popular addition last year.CA is still working through what the BBL fixtures will look like due to difficulties with border restrictions around the country. The WBBL is set to be played entirely in the states of Tasmania, South Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland but the teams from New South Wales and Victoria had the opportunity to do 14 days quarantine in Tasmania in order to start the tournament. The same opportunity is unlikely to be afforded to the men’s teams with New South Wales and Victoria set to play Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup matches between themselves in the lead up to the BBL after both states were denied quarantine options outside of their states.
