Sune Luus bats for expansion of T20 franchise cricket: 'Important to know different players and different conditions'

Women’s domestic cricket in India has already benefited from franchise T20 cricket to the point that Indian “domestic players can walk into the South African side any day,” according to South Africa’s captain Sune Luus, who played for the Supernovas.Luus, who has featured in both the FairBreak Invitational tournament and Women’s T20 Challenge last month, said while the overall standard of women’s cricket has improved across nations, India have fast become among the leading nations in the shortest format and have a steady supply for players and strong support for the game to thank for their progress.Related

“Being at FairBreak and being in India for the IPL was a massive opportunity and an awesome learning curve. Both are T20 cricket – the changes are in the conditions and the opposition you are playing against,” Luus said, on arrival in Ireland, where South Africa’s winter tour begins.”The IPL was a bit of a better standard. With FairBreak there are a lot of girls from the Associates, some girls who used spikes for the first time, who played on a turf wicket for the first time so it was a whole different experience. The most surprising thing for FairBreak was the standard of cricket. You don’t really know about Austrians playing cricket or countries like that. But to see the standard they are at and the love of the game, it was exceptional to see. You can’t compare it to India. They are fanatics of cricket. They absolutely love it. And even the domestic players can walk into the South African side any day. The standards were a bit different but overall it was good cricket.”Luus was part of the winning team in both competitions and had ample opportunity to test herself against the best. She hit the winning runs for the Tornadoes in the inaugural FairBreak tournament in Dubai, in what was a fairly one-sided final, and made a crucial decision in the field for the Supernovas in a tight final against Velocity in India. Chasing 166, Velocity needed seven runs to win off the last two balls and Laura Wolvaardt, unbeaten on 64, was facing strike. Given that Luus captains Wolvaardt at international level, Supernovas captain Harmanpreet Kaur had a question for Luus.Sune Luus, Alana King, Sophie Ecclestone, and Pooja Vastrakar ahead of the Women’s T20 Challenge final•BCCI

“She ran to me and she was like, ‘Do we bring square leg up and keep deep extra out or do we take square leg out and bring deep extra in?’ It was a very short conversation.”Knowing Wolvaardt’s strength on the cover drive, Luus, who was stationed on the boundary, told Kaur, “You cannot bring deep extra cover in. You are going to have to keep me out and we are going to have to gamble with square leg being in the circle.”England international Sophie Ecclestone, the left-arm spinner, was bowling and delivered a flatter, faster ball that Wolvaardt could not get under and inside-edged to long-off for a single. Luus was more relieved than excited at first, as she helped mastermind a title-winning fielding strategy.”Luckily Sophie, the competitor that she is, executed her ball perfectly and the game plan worked,” she said. “If it had been the other way around, she (Kaur) would have probably been on my case for that one.”It’s instances like that, where national team-mates are pitted against each other and international competitors are made to combine, that has underpinned the success of various franchise men’s T20 leagues around the world and Luus hopes it can do the same for women’s cricket.”It’s an opportunity for some of the domestic players within countries to play with international players from around the world and obviously gain experience and learn from them,” she said. “It’s important to have T20 leagues across the world to get to know different players and play in different conditions.”Just like the men’s game, as franchise tournaments grow and the calendar is squeezed, Luus recognises that international cricket may suffer. “It’s just a case of finding the balance with international cricket and finding the time to get enough international cricket in the calendar,” she said.Already, the likes of Luus, Wolvaardt and Ayabonga Khaka have only had a couple of weeks between the Women’s ODI World Cup, which ended in April, and the FairBreak and Women’s T20 Challenge. The trio have now traveled to the UK, where South Africa will be on tour until mid-August, playing in six T20Is against Ireland and England. Also on the calendar are the ICC Women’s Championship ODIs against Ireland, a one-off Test against England (South Africa’s first since 2014), ODIs against England and the Commonwealth Games. Luus said they would have to be smart with switching between formats and keeping players in form as the weeks roll on.”It’s a very difficult thing because we have ICC points up for grabs, we have a Test match coming up which is quite new for a lot of the players and in-between that we have to focus on T20 cricket for the Commonwealth Games,” she said. But, Luus agrees that it’s better than the alternative, especially as women’s cricket continues to make big strides.”Women’s cricket is becoming big in a lot of the countries and we are making our case for it to become professional in many of the countries and some of the Associate countries as well,” she said. “Women’s cricket is very much on the map. People want to invest in women’s cricket. I hope it continues. Women’s cricket deserves that.”

Ipswich could axe Hutchinson with January move for "unique" PL star

Ipswich Town will already be pondering what moves to make this coming January, praying that some deals in through the door during the transfer window could steer the Tractor Boys away from the relegation drop-zone in the Premier League.

Until then, however, Kieran McKenna will be tasked with picking his troops up from off the floor after a sobering 4-1 defeat to West Ham United last time out, as Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus toyed with the away side in the humbling demolition job.

Omari Hutchinson will know he needs to up his performances moving forward, to remain in his manager’s good books, after struggling throughout the one-sided contest at the London Stadium.

Hutchinson's performance vs West Ham

The former Chelsea youngster would have a quiet afternoon away at the Hammers, with no end product present in the 20-year-old’s game, away from some slaloming runs attempting to unlock the home side’s defence.

Hutchinson would fail to register a single shot on the home side’s goal during the 4-1 win in favour of the hosts, whilst also failing to deliver a single accurate cross into the box from two attempts, as the flashy attacker failed in his mission to breach Julen Lopetegui’s men time after time.

The 20-year-old, much like some of his other flustered teammates, has seemingly struggled with the gigantic step-up in quality, with zero goals coming his way from seven Premier League contests to date.

In stark contrast, when starring in the league below week in week out last season, Hutchinson would score an impressive ten strikes from 44 games, playing a key role in McKenna’s side unbelievably sealing promotion up to the elite division.

Long gone are the days now when the Tractor Boys number 18 would hammer home goals like this to send the Portman Road masses into raptures, with McKenna perhaps tempted to revisit this deal in January to boost his side’s attacking midfield numbers away from the former Chelsea man.

The transfer Ipswich could look to revisit

Back in the summer, the newly promoted outfit were linked with an ever-growing list of exciting faces, as the Ipswich boss went about adding in sprinkles of quality here and there to ensure his side took to the step-up well.

There might well be a regret on the Suffolk side’s end now that they didn’t try and tie up a deal for Miguel Almiron to join from Newcastle United, who is undeniably experienced at the level, having been reportedly been interested in his services back in May, as per TEAMTalk.

Although it does look as if the Paraguayan’s time at St James’ Park is coming to a natural end now – with the same outlet more recently reporting that a January exit looks in store – the table above shows how much of an asset he has been to the Magpies in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, with a stunning 11 goals picked up during the 2022/23 campaign.

Last year, Howe would go out of his way to wax lyrical about Almiron – even when his form wasn’t blowing the league away – describing the South American attacker as “unique”, with the 30-year-old clearly very highly thought of.

Almiron could well have even struck up an electric relationship up top with Liam Delap if the pair had managed to link up with each other at Portman Road, with the raw former Manchester City striker netting an impressive four goals from seven league games, even as his team struggles like they did away at the London Stadium.

Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron.

Adding in the 30-year-old could also have meant McKenna was less reliant on having to play Hutchinson in a number ten role behind the lone Delap, with the former Manchester United coach turned Tractor Boys icon then pushing the ex-Chelsea attacker back to the flanks or onto the bench.

Almiron would then tussle it out with Conor Chaplin to the rights over that main attacking midfield spot, with plenty of positives to latch onto if a deal had been successful.

There could be a chance still that this move is reignited in January, with Almiron looking to be heading for the exit door soon in Tyneside, as McKenna attempts to boost his relegation-threatened side with some new welcome additions shortly.

Aston Villa’s "outstanding" loan ace is worth more than Rogers after exit

da casino: Aston Villa have made some superb signings under Unai Emery since the Spaniard took charge of the club back in October 2022. He has overseen four transfer windows as Villans boss so far, spending a few hundred million to strengthen the squad.

da betway: That has certainly paid off, with the Midlands club now competing for the top four and in the Champions League.

The most expensive player the former Arsenal boss has signed during his tenure at Villa Park was Amadou Onana. The Belgian midfielder cost £50m from Premier League rivals Everton. The Villans have also signed Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire and Pau Torres from Villarreal.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

Arguably Emery’s best signing as Villa manager, however, is Morgan Rogers.

Rogers’ stats for Villa

Since making the move to Villa Park in January 2024, versatile attacker Rogers has been a revelation for the club. He left Championship side Middlesbrough to join Villa, in a deal worth an initial £8m, but with the potential to rise to £16m with add-ons.

It has been an exceptional start to life in the Midlands for the Manchester City academy graduate. Rogers has quickly become a key player under Emery and is now a regular starter in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

So far for the Villans, he has played 30 times and already has six goals and four assists to his name. This term in the Premier League, the 22-year-old has been in impressive form, with five goal involvements so far.

Stats from Transfermarkt

There have certainly been plenty of high-profile people who have taken notice of the electric attacker. One of those is former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher. Earlier in the season, he described the Villa number 27 as a “machine”, explaining that he looks “unstoppable” when he dribbles.

Rogers is hitting new heights each week and continues to excel in that famous Claret and Blue shirt. His value has risen to £18.2m as per Transfermarkt, exceeding the price he cost the Midlands club.

With that being said, there is a former Villans loanee who is also having an impressive season and is now worth even more than their star man.

The former Villa star worth more than Rogers

One of the biggest cult heroes at Villa Park in recent years was Tammy Abraham. He was a pivotal figure in their promotion success back in 2018/19 when he spent a year on loan at the club from Chelsea.

tammy-abraham-aston-villa-transfer

That season was simply phenomenal for the Cobham graduate. He scored 25 goals in 37 Championship games, and a further strike in the play-offs as the Villans won promotion by beating Derby County at Wembley.

Four of those finishes came in a hectic 5-5 draw at home to Nottingham Forest.

Since his loan at Villa Park expired, the striker has gone on to play for some big European clubs. Of course, he returned to Chelsea where he played for a few seasons, before moving to Italy. Abraham joined Roma from his boyhood club, and impressed despite missing a season with a bad injury.

For the duration of the 2024/25 campaign, the 27-year-old is on loan at Milan. He has scored once and has two assists to his name in seven Serie A appearances, although has played just 355 minutes. That is the equivalent of 3.9 full 90 minute games. With three goal involvements in just over three full games, his numbers are stacking up well.

With that in mind, the striker, who was described as an “outstanding” player by football statistician Statman Dave, is now valued higher than Rogers.

According to Transfermarkt, Abraham is worth £20.7m, although that has dropped given he missed a season with injury.

Arsenal could be without "underrated" star for Shakhtar after injury update

Arsenal could be without an “underrated” member of their squad for tonight’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium, with manager Mikel Arteta looking to secure the Gunners’ second victory in Europe this season.

Arsenal vs Shakhtar Donetsk – match preview

Arteta’s side endured their first loss of the season last weekend, succumbing to a 2-0 loss away at Bournemouth, with star defender William Saliba given his marching orders on the half-hour mark.

It was an afternoon to forget for Arsenal, who also watched Premier League title rivals Man City and Liverpool both secure 2-1 victories against Wolves and Chelsea respectively.

Ryan Christie’s 70th-minute strike undid all of their hard work defensively before a Justin Kluivert penalty 10 minutes from added time sealed their fate on the south coast.

Leandro Trossard was among Arsenal’s average performers at Bournemouth, but there were a few to choose from during a very difficult encounter. Arsenal will be desperate to get back to winning ways against Shakhtar this evening, but the Ukranian champions won’t be easy customers either.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has been sidelined by another long-term injury and is set to miss Shakhtar tonight, alongside the likes of Kieran Tierney, who has been named in their European squad list but remains absent with a hamstring problem.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s tie, Arteta drew attention to the number of absent players in Arsenal’s squad right now and their hectic fixture calendar as factors which helped cause their first loss of the season.

“Very clear, we put a bit of perspective into the situation,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Bournemouth.

“Obviously we want to win in any context. The reality is we made that context very difficult for ourselves. It was very difficult already with the amount of players that we had out, the schedule and the games that we had to play, but that’s the reality. For that game we didn’t get away with it. We could’ve done and it would’ve been a very different narrative. The reality is we didn’t and now the context is that we have lost one game in six months. Ok, now we have to win again, with the context that we have lost for the first time in six months, so let’s show it.”

Arsenal could be without Bukayo Saka for Shakhtar Donetsk clash

A real miss for Arsenal has been club captain and chief creator Martin Odegaard. Arteta confirmed before Bournemouth that Odegaard is in the latter stages of rehab and could be back fairly soon, but this evening’s fixture comes far too early.

Another big miss has been star winger Bukayo Saka, who was forced to miss their trip to Bournemouth last weekend after picking up an injury on international duty with England.

Ahead of Shakhtar this evening, Arteta confirmed that Saka is an injury doubt for Arsenal, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll feature.

“They are closer and both progressing really well,” said Arteta on Odegaard and Saka.

“Martin is still not fit. With Bukayo, let’s see how he feels today and in the training session that we have later on.”

Saka’s importance to Arsenal is crystal clear, and Arteta will be desperate to have him back fit and firing as soon as possible. The 23-year-old looks set to be a crucial role yet again this campaign, despite still being “underrated” by a lot of people according to journalist Charles Watts.

“I think Saka’s season has been absolutely underrated by a lot of people,” said Watts on Inside Arsenal earlier this year.

“I think he still had a really, really good season. His numbers are fantastic. He’s exceeded any other season, and this is one where you’d say he hasn’t always been at his best. He just gets booted around constantly, gets up, keeps going.”

Can runs replace talk for captains?

Neither Graeme Smith or Michael Clarke have been flush with runs in the Test series, but have had a fair bit to say about each other’s teams

Firdose Moonda26-Feb-2014Unlike the two teams they lead, Graeme Smith and Michael Clarke have been doing their talking the way us normal folks do: with their mouths. Both leaders are short on form – with 37 runs for Smith and 60 for Clarke across four innings each – so they have to assert their authority by taking gentle at jabs at each other while leaving the rest of their XI to do the real roughing up.”There’s always a game being played within a game,” Smith admitted after the second Test in Port Elizabeth. On that occasion it was a game Smith had won, despite Clarke hinting the South African captain was too conservative in his tactics. When Clarke was asked when he thought the Australians would find themselves chasing, given the gloomy forecast for the fifth day and South Africa needing a victory to keep the series alive, the glint in his eye twinkled with mischief. “I’d have had five overs tonight,” he said, to a room that swelled with laughter. Really? Of course not. Then again, maybe he was not simply taking a dig. Clarke proved his penchant for not batting on regardless when he declared after 3.2 overs on the fourth morning at Centurion Park, with only two runs added to the Australian total. With a lead of 481 and having seen “enough in the pitch,” to know the variable bounce would give South Africa no chance, Clarke sent Smith’s team in and victory was promptly wrapped up in the final session.Smith prefers to err on the side of caution. South Africa’s overnight lead in Port Elizabeth after three days was 369. Most thought it was already enough, especially with the time left in the match because of the looming rain and the brittle Australian top order. Smith did not. He kept Hashim Amla at the crease for 90 minutes the following morning, until the advantage swelled to 447. Morne Morkel had predicted the evening before that 450 was the “magical number.”That gave South Africa just over five sessions to bowl Australia out but, with play looking likely to be washed out on the final day, it meant a likely two and a bit sessions. South Africa used every last minute of those, including the extra half hour awarded by the umpires, but managed to finish the match in time. In the end, they need not have worried. The rain only arrived at lunch time in Port Elizabeth on the scheduled final day so South Africa had the time they needed and Smith did not need five overs late on the third evening to win.As it turned out, Smith said he always knew that. “The disappointing thing is that a lot of you fell for it,” he joked, to the media. “The truth is that as a captain, you know what you want to do and how to get the best out of your guys.”That much is true for both. Clarke knows how to use Mitchell Johnson in short bursts and how to set fields the photographers can have fun snapping. The four short-midwickets he had for AB de Villiers was one example, and he only reduced them to three when de Villiers made a mockery of it and hit Peter Siddle for six over all of them. Smith has become astute in managing his bowlers, especially Dale Steyn, and coped well without the fourth seamer in Port Elizabeth. He also experimented with fielders, using close catchers at short cover more than in recent times.”Graeme has learnt a lot from when he first started and you can see he is more adventurous with field placings,” Peter Kirsten, the former South Africa batsman, told ESPNcricinfo. “On a slow wicket we saw him use two short covers, two short mid-wickets and that kind of thing.”One of those short covers was in place when Clarke drove loosely in the first innings in Port Elizabeth. That shot got him into trouble in the second innings, too, and extended his run of innings without passing 25 to 11. Smith is in an equally barren stretch, with four scores under 15 and seven innings since his last half-century. Clarke has set Johnson on him with success in three of the four innings in this series so far.Smith may regard the left-armers hold over him as nothing more than “bull dot dot dot”, which is also what he called a lot of Australia’s big-talk before the series. Some of that included Peter Siddle saying Australia would target South Africa from the top-down, by going after the leader first. Australia have remained true to that promise and, perhaps subconsciously, have influenced South Africa to do the same thing to Clarke.Overall, Kirsten said it seems the captains have the measure of each other in just about every way. “They’re both strong personalities and have good strength of character. When you do as well as they’ve both done as leaders, it gives you a lot of confidence,” Kirsten said. “It’s all a bit of cat and mouse now but it’s good to have some Jose Mourinho-style talk around cricket.”Which one of Smith or Clarke is really the special one may be decided after the Newlands Test.

-O atual momento do clube é OK, nada espetacular.

Liverpool enter pole position for "amazing" 24 y/o midfielder Klopp wanted

In a move that would make up for missing out on Martin Zubimendi in the summer, Liverpool are reportedly leading the race to sign a midfielder who Arne Slot values – and one Jurgen Klopp missed out on during his time at Anfield.

Liverpool transfer news

After coming up short in their pursuit of Zubimendi in the summer, it was easy to worry about Liverpool. Their midfield issue hadn’t been solved since Fabinho’s drop-off in form and subsequent exit. Even though the arrivals of Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai helped last summer, the Reds still lacked a permanent solution at the base of their midfield until Slot’s act of genius.

Liverpool now formally register their interest in £33m Player of the Month

He is enjoying an extraordinary start to the season.

ByHenry Jackson Nov 1, 2024

The Dutchman – forced to come up with an internal solution – turned to Ryan Gravenberch and has reaped the rewards ever since. The former Bayern Munich man never really received a consistent opportunity under Klopp with just 12 top-flight starts, but has instantly been one of the main men under countryman Slot, and deservedly so.

Having made such an impressive start to the campaign, there’s even an argument that Gravenberch has been the Premier League’s standout midfielder so far.

However, that’s not to say the Reds’ midfield is now complete, though one move could potentially solve their issues. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now leading the race to sign Aurelien Tchouameni, who has struggled at Real Madrid in recent weeks to leave the door ajar for a summer exit.

The reports claim the Frenchman was a player Klopp wanted during his time at Anfield, while Tchouameni has also earned the respect of Slot, who reportedly values the 24-year-old’s ability at the heart of midfield.

Luring a player away from Real Madrid is never an easy task, but given that the Spaniards are reportedly open to offers, Liverpool may finally get the man they initially wanted to sign during his Monaco years.

"Amazing" Tchouameni could complete Liverpool midfield

A midfield three of Mac Allister, Tchouameni and Gravenberch is certainly a mouth-watering prospect. Of course, whether Liverpool can make such a trio happen remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that the France international would particularly complement Gravenberch at the heart of Slot’s side whilst making up for Klopp’s previous transfer lapse.

Whilst things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Tchouameni at Real Madrid in the current campaign, he proved that he belongs among Europe’s best during his debut season when he earned the praise of Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, who dubbed the midfielder an “amazing player”.

Signing Tchouameni may have once seemed like a dream move for Liverpool, though whilst it’s still far from a reality, the Reds have been handed fresh hope in the pursuit of the Frenchman’s signature.
