Warwickshire sign up Mohammed Siraj for remainder of 2022 season

The fast bowler is set to become the sixth India player to feature in county cricket this season

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Aug-2022Mohammed Siraj is set to play for Warwickshire over the remainder of the 2022 County Championship season. He becomes the sixth India player to be signed by a county team this season, after Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya (Warwickshire for Royal London Cup), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex) and Navdeep Saini (Kent).Siraj is currently part of the India squad that is in Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI series, which began on Thursday in Harare. After the conclusion of the Zimbabwe tour on August 22, Siraj is expected to arrive in Birmingham ahead of Warwickshire’s home game against Somerset, which begins on September 12.

Warwickshire are currently third from bottom on the Division One table, with just one win from their 11 games so far. After their match against Somerset, they are also due to play against Gloucestershire and Hampshire in their push to avoid relegation to Division Two. Siraj will be available for all three matches. The 28-year-old Siraj has established himself as a key member of India’s fast-bowling group in Test cricket since his debut on the 2020-21 tour of Australia, where he finished the series as the highest wicket-taker among the visitors’ injury-hit bowling group. He has played 13 Test matches so far, taking 40 wickets at an average of 30.77. He is also a regular member of India’s ODI attack.Siraj will hope that his county stint will help him in his bid to rediscover his best red-ball form, after a drop-off in his returns during his last two Test tours. After taking just three wickets in two Tests in South Africa at the turn of the year, at an average of 51.00, Siraj had a mixed Test match at Edgbaston – Warwickshire’s home ground – in July, picking up four first-innings wickets but conceding more than a run a ball across two innings as England pulled off a record chase.”I can’t wait to join up with the Bears squad,” Siraj said. “I have always enjoyed playing in England with India and I’m excited to experience County Cricket.”Edgbaston is [a] world-class stadium and the atmosphere it created this year for the Test was special. I’m really looking forward to making it my home in September and hopefully helping the Bears end the season well.”I would like to extend my gratitude to both Warwickshire County Cricket Club and BCCI for this opportunity.”Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of cricket said: “Siraj is a fantastic addition to the squad and we can’t wait to welcome him to Warwickshire. He is one of the best fast bowlers in the world right now and his knowledge and experience will help bring an added dimension to our line-up.”It’s been clear that we needed to strengthen our bowling attack for the crucial run-in period and I’m excited to see what Siraj can do in these three games.”

Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has contracted pneumonia, and will stay in hospital overnight. The PCB announced that their in-house medical panel was monitoring him, and that any calls on his participation in the remainder of the ongoing series against England would be made after assessing his medical reports. However, the development effectively rules him out of the entirety of the Lahore leg of the series against England, and also leaves him a significant doubt for the forthcoming tour of New Zealand, which is due to get underway in Christchurch on October 7, as preparation for the T20 World Cup.The Pakistan squad leaves for New Zealand on October 3 to play a T20I tri-series also featuring Bangladesh, with the final on October 14. They then depart for Australia for the World Cup, where, after a pair of warm-ups – including against England – they play their first group game in Melbourne on October 23 against India.Naseem featured in the first match of the current series against England, and also played a full part in the recently concluded Asia Cup. In the absence of Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is also currently ruled out with injury, he had taken over the left-armer’s responsibility up top as Pakistan’s premier new-ball bowler.Afridi, who has been undergoing treatment in London for a knee injury, is expected to be available for Pakistan for the World Cup.

Saved by Caicedo: 4/10 Chelsea ace let Maresca down vs Man Utd

Chelsea haven’t won at Old Trafford since 2013, and they will still be waiting to break that duck, as the two sides shared the points with a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening.

A relatively cagey game saw the first goal scored by Manchester United in the 70th minute when Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot after Robert Sanchez gave away the penalty.

But Moises Caicedo struck back with a thunderbolt volley in the 74th minute, equalising the game and making for an interesting final 15 minutes.

Chelsea had more of the ball, managing 54% possession during the game, whilst taking 12 shots, and only fashioning one big chance. Meanwhile, Manchester United had 46% possession, and managed 11 shots, but did create four big chances, more than the Blues managed.

Whilst this isn’t a great result for Enzo Maresca’s men, Chelsea now sit fourth in the Premier League after ten matches played, winning five times, drawing three, and losing just twice – to Manchester City and Liverpool. Thanks to Caicedo’s goal, Chelsea now have 18 points in the league, with a complete performance from the Ecuador international.

Moises Caicedo's amazing performance in numbers

As well as his brilliantly taken goal, Caicedo was generally imperious in the middle of the park, making 36 successful passes out of his 43 attempted.

He completed one key pass, made 2/3 of his long balls, won eight of his 16 ground duels contested, won his only aerial duel contested, and made three tackles in the game.

The 23-year-old has made 12 appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring one goal, providing two assists, and totalling 997 minutes played. He is clearly one of Maresca’s most trusted men, and his consistent performances have been a highlight for the Blues so far this campaign.

Unfortunately, Caicedo’s goal was an equaliser, rather than a worthy winner. Despite his excellent performance, there were some other Chelsea players on the pitch who weren’t quite at the races, and one of them was Noni Madueke.

Noni Madueke's performance in numbers

The 22-year-old winger has had a great start to life under Maresca, being the preferred choice on that right-wing so far this season, playing to his strengths, allowing him to get 1v1 with the fullback, be direct, and attack the box on every given opportunity.

In his 12 appearances so far this campaign, Madueke has scored five times across 752 minutes played. However, his performance against United was below par, failing to provide that usual directness he has done in other games this term.

Madueke is important on both sides of the ball for Maresca’s system, and he failed to deliver in both aspects today. Only completing one of his three dribble attempts was unlike him, and it felt the ball wasn’t making its way out to the right side quickly enough in transition to get the best of Madueke.

But the England international also lost six of his eight ground duels and was dribbled past twice, which shows not only was Madueke relatively ineffective going forward against United, but also off the ball, he was exploited on a few occasions.

On that evidence, it was hardly a surprise that the i’s George Simms handed him a 4/10 rating, describing how ‘Mazraoui and Martinez got the better of him.’

Despite not having his best performance, it is clear Maresca values his profile and work ethic for the team, and therefore Madueke’s spot probably isn’t at risk, but many Chelsea fans will be hoping to see him return to his best in their next game against Noah in the Conference League on Thursday.

Enzo could drop Madueke for "elite” teen who's never played for Chelsea

Chelsea have a talent with zero appearances who could permanently displace Madueke in the future.

The club crest is proudly displayed on the left chest while the shirt sponsor, Etihad Airways, takes center stage across the chest. On the back of the jersey, just below the collar, a small New York City flag.

Everton wasted £58m on Goodison star who earned more than Calvert-Lewin

Everton have put their poor start to the season behind them, with a three-match unbeaten run following the dismal four defeats in a row to kick off the year.

As such, the Toffees have clambered out of the drop zone and will be confident that they can put it all behind them, especially with a favourable (on paper) run of fixtures coming up in the Premier League. Sean Dyche will be looking ahead with renewed optimism.

Let’s not forget that Jarrad Branthwaite has been sidelined for six of the seven fixtures thus far, and with the young titan set to return after the current international break, there’s reason to be sanguine.

The defensive issues of recent months have been concerning, but Branthwaite’s return will go a long way toward fixing that for good. All this fragility at the rear has made us think about what it would have been like to have Yerry Mina at the top of his game in this Everton side – unfortunately, the Colombia international scarcely claimed top fitness across his years at the outfit.

How much Yerry Mina cost Everton

Everton signed Mina from Barcelona in August 2018. The towering defender was only 23 at the time and cost £27m, which was a steep figure but seemed worth it for a player of high-standard quality.

He had just risen to fame after his performances on his nation at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, scoring an equaliser against England in the first knockout phase before the Three Lions surprised the globe with a competitive penalty shootout victory.

However, Mina would fall heavily by the wayside on Merseyside after a lasting series of injuries ravaged his chances of living up to and surpassing that initial price tag.

Former Everton manager Marco Silva commented on the South American’s “unlucky” track record on the fitness front back in 2019, having been restricted to a bit-part role in his maiden term, but as you can see, he only enjoyed two seasons of comparatively high availability.

And when considering that he earned £120k per week during his time at Goodison Park, more than starting number nine, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£100k per week), took home both then and now, the misfire is really underscored.

Combining his transfer fee (£27m) with the centre-back’s total earnings across the five-year period he plied his trade in the Premier League, it can be unravelled that Mina cost the club from £58m in total, or, to put it another way, £760k per top-flight start.

It’s poignant, mostly because Mina – like Calvert-Lewin, who has endured his own injury woes in recent years – could have reached such loftier heights.

Yerry Mina's Everton career

Perhaps the most frustrating point of all this is that Mina is actually an excellent defender. When fit, the Colombian showcased his quality and indeed cannot be fully discredited after recovering his fitness levels at the perfect time toward the business end of the 2022/23 term.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Everton'sYerryMina

Everton were in an imperilled position, and time was running out to craft a purple patch. He scored two goals from just seven Premier League appearances that year, but started all four of Everton’s final matches and indeed had a vital say in this proud club’s future after bundling home against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the penultimate week to salvage a last-gasp point.

It fuelled Goodison for the finale, which saw Bournemouth fended off and Abdoulaye Doucoure volley in a second-half winner to preserve top-flight status. Mina played the full 90 on his final display and kept a clean sheet, winning eight of his 11 contested duels, as per Sofascore.

Former Everton player Yerry Mina

He encapsulated the phrase short but sweet, putting in some colossal performances to save a club from falling. It’s fair to say that without his efforts, the Toffees wouldn’t have found the verve to avoid the maw of relegation.

Oh, what could have been. Fans will cherish the defender’s best moments, but sadly, they were few and far between for a player who arrived with a weight of expectation and took home a pretty penny besides.

England's no-win trip north

Scotland will aim to take advantage of England’s vulnerability in a fixture that does little to aid the long-term planning of Peter Moores and Alastair Cook

George Dobell in Aberdeen08-May-2014Win and it is only to be expected; lose and it is a humiliation. Peter Moores’ second stint as England coach begins with as close to a no-win fixture as is possible.England should prove too strong for Scotland. Despite recent setbacks, England are No. 4 in the ODI rankings and reached the final of the last global ODI tournament. Their players enjoy every advantage of modern professionalism and several of them have played more than 100 ODIs. Some of Scotland’s players have to fit cricket in around their day jobs. But this game has many of the ingredients for an upset. Scotland, highly motivated and resurgent having recently qualified for the World Cup, have nothing to lose and know that, after a chastening winter, England cannot be high on confidence. It would be stretching things a bit far to say they smell blood, but they certainly sense vulnerability. Netherlands’ victory over England has shown what is possibleEngland, meanwhile, have not played any white ball cricket this season. They have never played an ODI so far north – Kyle Coetzer, Scotland’s captain, proudly described it as the most northerly ODI venue in the world – and, in doing so in early May in a match starting at 10.30am and incorporating two new balls, know that batting could be something of a lottery at times. Poor weather could also intervene – it would be a surprise if it didn’t – increasing the prospect of a shortened run chase, bowlers struggling to grip slippery balls and Duckworth-Lewis inspired frustration. It would be wrong to decry the pitch, though. New Zealand scored 400 here in an ODI in 2008 and seven men have registered ODI centuries on the ground. But the boundary is small, the outfield on Thursday surprisingly wet and the sell-out crowd likely to be heavily partisan. It all faintly evokes memories of first-class sides being embarrassed at the home of minor county teams in the Gillette Cup.One thing England should not be is complacent. Indeed, after the shock of the Netherlands defeat – a defeat that might well have cost Ashley Giles his job – and the thrashings in Australia, it remains to be seen if England’s scars have healed. It was a lack of confidence, not a surfeit of it, which was their main weakness in Bangladesh. There is a sense that Moores, at the start of this new era for England, is keen to help the team rediscover the simple pride and joy of representing their country and playing a game they love for a living. As Alastair Cook admitted, there were times in Australia, in particular, when they forgot that.”You have to remember how lucky we are to wear the shirt and play for your country,” Cook said. “Sometimes after a long period away, you forget that. Last winter is probably a reminder of that. When you lose games of cricket it becomes very hard.”Now we’ve all had bit of time away from the game, it’s been a good time to reflect and realise how special it is to be playing for England. We have to remember that at all times. Chatting to a few of the guys who are no longer playing, they say it’s the best days of your life even in tough times.”

Coetzer evokes England’s winter turmoil

Kyle Coetzer, the Scotland captain, has called on his team to “bring back some bad memories from the winter” for England in Aberdeen.
Coetzer, born and raised in the city, used his pre-match press conference to remind England of a chastening few months, which included a whitewash defeat in the Ashes and an embarrassing loss at the hands of Holland in the World T20.
“England didn’t have the winter they would have liked,” Coetzer said, “so hopefully we can bring back some back bad memories. They have some fresh faces, a new coach and a few players trying to prove themselves.
“No one’s place is cemented, so they may feel under a bit of a pressure to prove themselves. Hopefully we can prey on that and bring back a few bad memories.”
Coetzer is also relishing the opportunity to prove the strength of Scotland and Associate cricket.
“A game of this magnitude is great for the whole of Scotland,” he said. “We would like to see more games of this level, so it is hugely important for us to make most of days like this. We are always trying to prove a case for Associate cricket and we want to show what a high level it is. The progression we have made over the last 12-18 months has been outstanding and now is our time to prove ourselves.”

Furthermore, with 21 ODIs to play until the World Cup starts, places are at stake in both sides. This England team has only been assembled for this game so performances here will influence selection for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, which will be named on Tuesday. Most urgently, England need to find some reliable ‘death’ bowlers – not a strong area in county cricket at present – and decide on their top-order batting tactics.Harry Gurney, a left-arm bowler of sharp if not express pace, might be one answer. He has developed a good record in domestic white-ball cricket and could partner James Anderson or Stuart Broad in Powerplays and at the end of an innings. Ravi Bopara, who Alastair Cook revealingly named as one of two colleagues (Broad was the other) he consulted before deciding to continue as captain, is another underutilised ‘death’ option. Chris Jordan, who has looked the most dangerous new-ball bowler in England this season, rarely does the job for Sussex and struggled when pressed into service in the role in the Caribbean. There is a sense that England would like to take a more aggressive approach to the first 15 overs of their innings. The argument for such a tactic is that, on the batsmen-friendly tracks anticipated for most of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, England’s traditional steady approach will not generate the huge totals that may be needed to prevail. But Aberdeen in May is not the place to experiment with aggressive top-order batting. It may well be that the games played against Sri Lanka offer little more help, either. England continue to be hindered by their scheduling.Besides, Cook believes that the best players have the ability to adapt. So those players who are suited to seeing England through the new ball in Aberdeen should, if Cook is to be believed, also prove the men to get them off to a flyer in Perth and Brisbane.”One of skills you need as an international cricketer is the ability to play in different conditions,” Cook said. “You’re challenged wherever you play in the world. The best players adapt and find a way of delivering results. The wicket here looks good, but it won’t be an absolute belter, so going hard would be foolish.”But preparing for a World Cup in Australia and New Zealand by playing in Aberdeen in May is like preparing for a sprint by going ice-skating.All of which begs the question: why is this game taking place? The politically correct answer is that the ECB and ICC want to provide some encouragement to an Associate neighbour. But the fact that England have played only two of their previous 616 ODIs against Scotland, does not suggest that encouragement is especially effusive. If the ECB really wanted to support Associate cricket, it would lobby the ICC to push for cricket to be accepted as an Olympic sport. Until it does, matches like this are little more than a perfunctory sop.

Imagine him & Palmer: Maresca must start Chelsea ace who’s like Neymar

da pinup bet: Manager bounce. It’s a fear-inducing thing when you’re up against a team that has been struggling, only to dispose of its manager and replace them with a shiny new leader.

da premier bet: For Chelsea, this is the task. Enzo Maresca’s squad travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United in the Premier League this afternoon, seeking three points against a team boasting one measly win across eight matches in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag was sacked at the start of the week, but thankfully, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim will not alight in England until the November international break. Even so, interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will galvanise the Theatre into a cacophony of noise, having led United to a 4-1 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

Chelsea were dumped out of the domestic cup competition that evening, losing to Newcastle United after a disasterclass in defence, but thankfully, Maresca is bound to ring the changes, shifting his set-up back to its usual Premier League model.

Chelsea team news

With no fresh injury concerns for Maresca’s squad, this is a good opportunity to inflict further misery on Man United before Amorim stamps his style on the team.

That said, Jadon Sancho is ineligible to feature at Old Trafford since he is on loan from Man United, and cannot participate against his parent club as per the terms.

Omari Kellyman, signed from Aston Villa in deal worth up to £19m this summer, is also sidelined, though the 19-year-old has yet to feature for the senior side anyway.

The visitors must launch a concerted attack on the wobbly United backline, all the while standing firm against a profligate side, yes, but one that has created 24 big chances in the Premier League this year, the joint-third-highest score in the division.

Cole Palmer will hold the key to victory.

Cole Palmer will be crucial

It hardly takes a perusal through the memory bank to recall Palmer’s stunning hat-trick against the Red Devils last season, turning the Premier League match on its head with an incredible final flourish. It, perhaps, truly established the ace as one of the finest talents on the continent.

After blitzing past Premier League defences in his first full season as a professional, as if they were paper cutouts, rival supporters understandably prayed for a future tag of ‘one-season wonder’, but it hasn’t been forthcoming.

Already this season, just a few months in, Palmer, aged only 22, has posted seven goals and five assists across nine league matches, with his stunning showings even leading Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher to pronounce him “the best player in the Premier League.”

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

What a player, ay? As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 2% for assists, the top 8% for shot-creating actions and the top 8% for progressive passes per 90.

Last season’s heroics established Palmer as a force to be reckoned with, but now he’s growing into a top, top player. Refined and robust, he’s so important for the west Londoners.

Chelsea are blessed to have an attacking midfielder with such a potent threat, and though Sancho is unavailable, Maresca will still be able to unleash a thrilling frontline.

Noni Madueke will be on the right flank; Nicolas Jackson will of course reprise his role at number nine. However, Pedro Neto may well find himself benched even after impressing against Newcastle last weekend, because Mykhaylo Mudryk – the club’s Ukrainian Neymar – might be the perfect man for the left wing on this occasion.

Maresca must unleash Mykhaylo Mudryk

Mudryk has had a tough ride throughout the duration of his Chelsea career so far, but there are genuine signs of progress under Maresca’s wing this season.

Now, many might assume that Neto would be the shoo-in for a starting berth on the left flank with Sancho out of action, but this might not actually be the best idea.

The Portugal international is an electric and dynamic talent, impressed against the Magpies in the Premier League last weekend, but he faded as that one dragged on and lost eight of his 12 duels. That is something that might be exploited by his countryman Diogo Dalot, who flattered to deceive last time out but has arguably been United’s best player in 2024/25, winning an eye-catching 64% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

Man United are an aerially dominant team, ranking fifth in the Premier League this term (53% average), whereas Chelsea (47% average) languish in 15th.

Therefore, it’s perhaps not the best idea to utilise a cross-heavy star in Neto, who of course is not one-dimensional, and instead unleashes Mudryk, whose ability to weave past the last line is an uncanny thing.

With Palmer capable of incredible defence-splitting passes, and also among the finest creators in Europe, such strengths could be maximised.

The Ukraine international also produced quite an impressive performance in midweek, even if Chelsea’s defensive disaster pulled them out of the Carabao Cup.

He looked lively in flashes, and though Chelsea struggled to really get going – something that Mudryk was candidly a part of – he was certainly a bright spark, making three key passes, completing two dribbles, and winning nine duels, as per Sofascore.

That success in the duel is something that could be crucial in claiming purchase against Man United and is a large part of why Mudryk must be unleashed for this one – after all, he has a point to prove and is maybe, just maybe, starting to click into gear.

Mudryk has only started once in the top flight this year but now is his time to shine, and with Palmer pulling the strings from the centre, and that is why Maresca should boldly drop Neto after his assist last weekend to start the winger.
