WTC final: Ponting wants India to play Kishan and Suryakumar for 'a little bit of X-factor'

The Oval is known to assist spinners from time to time, and Ponting wants India to field both Ashwin and Jadeja, with Jadeja batting at No. 6

Ashish Pant29-May-2023Ricky Ponting wants India to play as many X-factor players as possible if they want to have an edge over Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Like Ishan Kishan, who, Ponting feels, is a stronger bet than KS Bharat to play as the wicketkeeper-batter in the absence of Rishabh Pant, and Suryakumar Yadav.Speaking on the latest episode of the ICC Review podcast, Ponting said his India XI at the WTC final would also include both R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, with Jadeja playing primarily as a batter at No. 6, with Suryakumar above Jadeja in the middle order.”If I was them [India], knowing the importance of this game – and you have to win this Test match – I’d be going with Ishan Kishan in this game,” Ponting said. “He provides that little bit of X-factor that you need when you might be pushing for a win in a Test match. Obviously, if Rishabh Pant is fit, he is playing, and he provides that X-factor for India. But with him not being there, and this is no blot on Bharat whatsoever, but I think Kishan just provides that little bit more X-factor, who’d do a good job with the gloves but can provide that really high-scoring run rate that is required in a one-off Test match to push for a win.Related

“I’d be going with as many X-factor players as I could and put some real pressure back on Australia.”Neither Kishan nor Suryakumar are Test regulars. Kishan is yet to make his Test debut, though he was in the squad for the home Test series against Australia earlier this year, while Suryakumar played his only Test in that same series, making eight runs the only time India batted in Nagpur, where they won by an innings and 132 runs on their way to a 2-1 series win. Both players, however, have decent first-class records. While Suryakumar has scored 5557 runs in 80 first class games at an average of 44.45, Kishan has 2985 in 48 matches, averaging 38.76. They have both, however, made their names mainly as explosive short-format batters. While Ponting did not elaborate on why he wanted Suryakumar to bat at No.5, he did say he was happy to see Ajinkya Rahane back in the Test fold.Rahane, India’s No. 5 until he was dropped in early 2022, had a good domestic season (2022-23) where he finished as Mumbai’s highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy with 634 runs in seven matches at 57.63. Rahane also surprised many watchers with his aggressive stroke play as a top-order impact batter for Chennai Super Kings in the latest IPL.”Jinks (Rahane) has had an incredible IPL as well. It’s funny, isn’t it, how IPL runs can now get you picked back into a Test match squad,” Ponting said. “Jinks has been on the outer for the last couple of years in Test cricket, but everyone saw how confident he looked and how well he played in the IPL and that was enough to get him back in.”I think they will pick Jadeja and Ashwin because Jadeja can hold that No. 6 batting spot”•BCCI”He has been there and done it before in Test cricket. It was probably a bigger hurdle for him to climb to get back into playing really good T20 cricket than it is for him to go back and play good Test cricket. His make-up is much more suited to the Test game than it is to T20 cricket. He has rediscovered some confidence and if he does get picked, I won’t be surprised to see him get runs in that Test match.”He has always been a really high-quality player and we saw him even with his leadership qualities here in Australia, in that last series to turn things around.”The 15-man India squad has three frontline spinners – all of them spin-bowling allrounders – in Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel. While Axar has showed consistency across formats in recent months, Ponting expects India to opt for Ashwin and Jadeja purely because of the nature of the pitch at The Oval, where the Test will be played from June 7 to 11.”I think they will pick Jadeja and Ashwin because Jadeja can hold that No. 6 batting spot,” Ponting said. “His batting has improved that much that they can pick him as a batter now that might just bowl a few overs if required. There is no doubt that Ashwin is a more skilled and better Test bowler than what Jadeja is, but if Jadeja can hold down that batting spot and then as the game goes on, getting into the fourth and fifth day, if it does start to turn, then you have got that really high-class second spin bowling option if required.”Historically, the Oval pitch has been a very good batting wicket. It’s generally offered something for the fast bowlers on day one, not a lot. But I have also played some games there where it has turned a lot. If it starts a little bit dry, it can turn a lot.”

Javier Aguirre’s third spell at the helm of the Mexican National Team has brought satisfaction to many fans, especially after winning the Nations League Finals – Mexico’s first title in this tournament after three consecutive victories by the United States. One of those expressing confidence in Aguirre’s leadership is former national team and Club América player Miguel Layún.

Layún praised Aguirre’s work since taking over last year from Jaime Lozano, as Mexico prepares to host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada. According to Layún, the team under Aguirre and assistant coach Rafa Márquez has the potential to bring great joy to Mexican supporters.

"Since Javier Aguirre came on board, the team has shown consistent growth – not just in terms of talent, but also in the way they approach matches. I think the players have done a phenomenal job, improving with every game. I genuinely believe Mexico is on the right path. The players understand the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity they have. We may not see another World Cup in our country again, so I’m confident they’ll give us a lot to cheer for,” Layún said.

The former fullback from Club América expressed his excitement about this new era under Aguirre and also spoke about Rafa Márquez, the ex-Barcelona legend who is now serving as assistant coach and may one day take over the national team himself.

"I love the fact that someone as iconic as Rafa Márquez is being groomed to continue this process. Right now, I don’t think there’s anyone better to instill in young players what it means to wear the national team jersey. Javier Aguirre is the ideal leader for this World Cup journey, and I truly hope results go our way,” he added.

Layún also shared his thoughts on the upcoming World Cup, where Mexico will play at home in the iconic Estadio Azteca and aim to finally reach the elusive fifth match.

"The format has changed – there are more teams, more matches. I feel that playing at home gives Mexico a real shot at performing well. Hopefully, the team does well enough in the group stage for us to see more games played here in Mexico. The dream is always to go as far as possible. Every player on that field has to believe they can beat anyone and even become world champions. Personally, I’ll always feel excited whenever I watch Mexico play, no matter what phase the team is in,” he concluded.

AFPWHAT MIGUEL LAYÚN SAID

Following the announcement that Estadio Azteca will reopen in March 2026 after extensive renovations ahead of the FIFA World Cup, Layún—one of the special guests from Mexico City's Organizing Committee—commented on the significance of the event.

“No words can truly capture what Estadio Azteca means to world football. We’re talking about a venue that will have hosted three World Cups. No matter which teams play the reopening match, they probably won’t match the weight of the stadium’s legacy. I just hope it’s a memorable event that fans can truly enjoy,” he said.

Sri Lanka survive Edwards scare to defend 213

Theekshana starred with a three-for after Dhananjaya’s 93 dragged them past 200

Madushka Balasuriya30-Jun-2023Sri Lanka survived an almighty scare as they scraped past Netherlands by 21 runs to kickstart their Super Six campaign on a nervy but winning note. It was a victory built on the back of a career-best 93 from Dhananjaya de Silva and a backs-against-the-wall bowling effort led by the excellent Maheesh Theekshana, who picked 3 for 31.But every inch of this win was contested by a persistent Netherlands outfit, who first restricted Sri Lanka to a subpar 213 and then nearly pulled off a nail-biting chase. Better sides than them have fallen foul of the twin threats of Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, who picked up five wickets between them on the day. Two run-outs, when the required rate throughout was essentially less than four an over, only adds credence to this notion. Netherlands captain Scott Edwards was left stranded on an unbeaten 68-ball 67, as he ran out of partners on a sticky surface that was taking turn and displaying some uneven bounce. The result means Sri Lanka join Zimbabwe on six points at the top of the table, with the winner of their clash on Sunday guaranteed qualification to the World Cup. As for the Netherlands, they can still get up to a maximum of six points but will now need one of Sri Lanka or Zimbabwe to lose both their remaining games.Theekshana also made an impact with the bat, sticking it out in the middle with Dhananjaya during a vital 77-run eighth wicket stand. With the game won by 21, the importance of Theekshana’s gritty 28 cannot be overstated, especially seeing that it came after Sri Lanka had been reduced to 131 for 7.Netherlands did all the running for much of the game. Starting with the very first delivery of the game, when Pathum Nissanka slashed wildly at one outside off stump to be caught at cover. That would be one of three wickets for the excellent Logan van Beek, who would also send Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka packing – all before the end of the first powerplay.Nissanka’s wouldn’t be the only questionable stroke by a Sri Lankan batter, as several were dismissed trying to hit out. This though was down to Netherlands persisting with nagging lines and lengths, allied with Sri Lanka’s inability to find singles and rotate strike consistently. The build up of pressure had batters falling while attempting to break the shackles. And, if not, the odd one that kept low would do the trick.Logan van Beek proved too hot for the Sri Lanka top-order batters to handle•ICC via Getty ImagesThis was essentially the tale of Sri Lanka’s innings, as Netherlands bowled wicket to wicket and refused to allow for easy runs. It was only Dhananjaya who showed the patience to thrive on this surface. He stitched together successive stands of 33, 29, 35 and 77 with Dimuth Karunaratne, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Theekshana respectively, to drag Sri Lanka to a defendable total. In defence of their target, Sri Lanka knocked over both openers for ducks inside the first two overs. But then the game began to slip away. Wesley Barresi and Bas de Leede – who had grabbed three wickets earlier – put on 77 for the third wicket, in a partnership that was highlighted by its industrious nature. The pair found boundaries frequently, but more than that they scrambled for every run.By the start of the 15th over they were going at a rate beyond six an over. But it would be their exuberance to grab every advantage that would be their downfall, as an ill-advised second would see Barresi run out. Barresi’s wicket would be followed by Teja Nidamanuru five balls later. De Leede and Edwards then put on a 41-ball 36.Theekshana returned to go through a gap between de Leede’s bat and pad to clean him up. He then executed a double-wicket maiden to send Netherlands tumbling to 133 for 7.From that point on it was a lone hand from Edwards, who employed the sweep to great effect and found ones and twos with ease. This would bring the target closer, but Sri Lanka were into the tail and so they chipped away. After an incredible throw to the non-striker’s end by keeper Kusal Mendis saw Shariz Ahmad run out, Hasaranga castled Klein with a googly.Edwards then looked to farm the strike alongside Dutt, but an inswinging yorker from Shanaka dispatched the latter. That Shanaka was even bowling at that stage was only down to the fact that Lahiru Kumara had been able to complete just two overs before being withdrawn with a side strain.

Szczesny came out of retirement to join BarcaGoalkeeper has enjoyed a fine debut seasonEx-Arsenal star could turn down new contractFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Joining as an emergency replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen last summer just five weeks after announcing his retirement, Szczesny quickly became a dependable No.1 for Hansi Flick's side, consistently stepping up for the team on the biggest stages. The former Arsenal star now faces a major decision after helping Barca to the brink of the La Liga title, having been offered a new two-year deal by the Catalan giants.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Szczesny's comeback from retirement has been remarkable. Signing on a one-year contract, he has gone on to make 29 appearances across competitions, leading Barcelona to Copa del Rey and Super Cup wins, and to within three points of the league title. Barca are eager to retain Szczesny's services despite Ter Stegen nearing full fitness, with Inaki Pena expected to leave the club this summer. Family and lifestyle decisions could influence the veteran's next move, with the goalkeeper joking about a potential return to golf in Marbella.

WHAT WOJCIECH SZCZESNY SAID

Speaking to , Szczesny opened up about the offer and the decision that lies ahead. he said: "I will not hide that I have an offer to continue at Barcelona for two more years. They have already presented it to me, but I have asked for time. I need to decide with my family what is best for all of us. My wife will be the one to make the decision, whether we stay or go to Marbella to play golf.

"I owe it to her to decide this together, and we have not done that yet. She makes most of the decisions, and I am not ashamed of it,” the Barcelona goalkeeper continued. "Honestly, I do not know what will happen, and I say that sincerely. We will decide this month because we need to sort out logistics, such as schools or moving, depending on what we choose. As of now, nothing is certain. We are thinking about it."

Szczesny appears set to make his decision before the end of the month, which will let Barcelona prepare for the summer transfer window. If he stays, he'll most likely serve as a backup or rotation option with Ter Stegen, with Espanyol's Joan Garcia eyed as a potential replacement should the former Poland international choose to retire for a second time.

> Veja classificação e simulador do Paulistão-2023 clicando aqui

A prioridade do clube, neste momento, é definir as situações do elenco atual.

Linsey Smith strikes with bat and ball as Vipers keep knockout ambitions in their own hands

Half-century and three wickets set up bonus-point win over Stars as Georgia Adams adds 49

ECB Reporters Network13-Sep-2023Linsey Smith scored her best List A score and picked up three wickets to beat South East Stars by 58 runs – boosting Vipers’ Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy knockout ambitions.Former England spinner Smith bagged a no-thrills 51, her first half-century in 50-over cricket, before taking 3 for 34 to set up a bonus point victory. She was the lynchpin for Vipers’ 254 – which saw Ella McCaughan and Georgia Adams score 40s and Dani Gregory take a four-for.Aylish Cranstone cracked 69 but Vipers leap-frogged Stars into second and leave qualification for the Eliminator in their own hands, while Stars will progress if they beat Central Sparks in the last round of fixtures.Vipers chose to bat but found early going slow on a tacky pitch, with only 27 runs coming in the opening 10 overs – Alexa Stonehouse picking up Abi Norgrove’s wicket and Ryana Macdonald-Gay accurate from the other end.McCaughan and Adams accelerated with 54 coming from the following seven overs before the former swung to long on and Georgia Elwiss was run out for the second game in a row.Adams continued her fine form with seven boundaries in a glossy 49, barely missing out on a fifth straight 50 when she top-edged to square leg.Emily Windsor had drilled to cover as Vipers looked limply at an under-par total on 128 for 5 but Freya Kemp’s whacking and Smith’s belligerence put them right.Kemp’s two sixes headlined the 48-run stand before slogging to long on, with Gregory completing her 4 for 55 by pinning Alice Monaghan.Smith only scored three boundaries, two of coming from edges, in her maiden Vipers fifty, however it came in 56 balls to highlight her strong running.Rhianna Southby chipped away with 21 off 24 but Vipers were bowled out in 48.2 overs with Smith caught at long on, Southby bowled and Ava Lee well caught behind. In reply, Stars grappled through the powerplay, also scoring 27, but lost captain Bryony Smith and Kira Chathli as Linsey Smith continued her fine game.Jemima Spence and Cranstone built the foundations of the chase with a 58-run stand before the former pulled to deep square.Former Viper Paige Scholfield and Kalea Moore fell to the increasingly impressive teenager Lee, while on loan from Vipers Chloe Hill was plumb in front to Mary Taylor.Left-hander Cranstone completed her first half-century of the season in 48 deliveries after an innings filled with stylish off-side stroke play.
But Adams bowled her after she had added 45 with Stonehouse, who perished soon after to Linsey Smith’s third.Bethan Miles was leg before to Adams – who took 2 for 41 – and after a 46-run 10th wicket stand, MacDonald-Gay was caught at deep midwicket.

Sams slams decisive blows as Essex oust defending champions Hampshire

Essex squeezed past defending champions Hampshire to reach the Vitality T20 Blast final via a rain-affected chase at Edgbaston. Simon Harmer, who hit the winning runs when Essex lifted the title in 2019, again applied the this time around as he drilled Nathan Ellis into the stands at long-on to complete a five-wicket victory.Having restricted Hampshire to 170 for 7 from 20 overs, Essex were then handed a revised target of 115 from 12 overs, following an extended delay for rain shortly after the start of their innings. Although Hampshire made quick inroads after the resumption to reduce Essex to 50 for 4 after 6.2, the arrival of Australia allrounder Daniel Sams brought a vital injection of power as he and Matt Critchley added 45 in 22 balls.Sams could not finish the job, well held on the boundary by Ross Whiteley, but despite Liam Dawson only conceding seven off the penultimate over to leave 13 needed from the last, Ellis – the hero in Hampshire’s dramatic victory a year ago – was hit for two sixes in three balls to end hopes of a defence.Hampshire’s innings had been a stop-start affair, held together by Joe Weatherley’s 63 off 39 balls. Spinners Critchley and Harmer picked up combined figures of 3 for 55 from their eight overs but a spirited finish from Weatherley and Benny Howell helped get Hampshire up to a par score. The rain delay took eight overs out of the Essex innings and seemed to tip the balance back towards the chasing side, with the requirement now 96 off 55 and the ball skidding around on a greasy outfield. They threatened to squander the advantage by losing 3 for 3 in the space of six ball, but Sams smashed three sixes in an innings of 29 from 17 to put them back on course for only a second Blast final appearance.Essex come out on top of DLS equation
Essex have based much of their approach to this year’s Blast on attacking come what may, so losing a wicket from the third ball of the innings would have been priced in. Adam Rossington’s flip off the hip went fine but Weatherley’s good day continued as he raced around the rope for a tumbling catch. But Essex’s start was scratchy as the clouds began to roll in, with Dan Lawrence dropped off a steepler by Dawson shortly before a heavy downpour took the players off for an hour with the score 19 for 1.The revised target left Essex needing to go at just above ten an over, and that had come down to 68 off 40 when James Fuller struck twice in the space of three balls: Michael Pepper caught at deep third off a wild hack and Lawrence edging a pull to the keeper. When Paul Walter was palpably lbw to John Turner in the next over, Essex were four down with the required rate climbing.”With wickets in hand and a smaller total, you would back yourself to get there,” Harmer said. “But in saying that when you lose wickets it’s tough to start again. You got to have your foot on the accelerator from ball one. So the way that guys like Critch and Dan Sams played, coming in there and striking from ball one was huge for us in the context of that chase.”Weatherley, meanwhile, described Hampshire as “bitterly disappointed” with the outcome. “With Duckworth-Lewis, it only takes is a couple of guys to hit a couple of sixes,” he said. “We still took wickets, if we hadn’t have done it would have looked a lot easier. It certainly feels unfair when they’ve got nine wickets in hand to get ten an over.”Hampshire start well, then stutter
Aaron Beard’s only over, the first of the Hampshire innings, went for 14 as both Ben McDermott and James Vince opened their accounts by whipping leg-side deliveries to the fence. McDermott then picked off Sams’ first two balls, the second via a domineering stride down the pitch before launching over long-off. An edged four wide of the keeper and two more off Sam Cook – one scooped over the head of short fine leg – took McDermott to 29 off 11 but he fell to his next delivery, pulling Cook straight to deep square leg.Hampshire at that point were 39 for 1 after three overs but Vince departed in the next over, chipping Shane Snater to mid-off, and Essex got a hold on the scoring to make it 55 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. The spinners then kept Hampshire in check, with Tom Prest, Dawson and Fuller all falling for middling scores and only five boundaries coming between the seventh and 16th overs.Weatherley, Howell add finishing touch
With wickets falling regularly, Weatherley had to take a circumspect approach, although he did hit one sweetly struck six down the ground off Harmer. Whiteley’s miscue off Walter left Hampshire 130 for 6 after 17, but the arrival of Howell added much-needed impetus at the death, as the seventh-wicket pair mirrored McDermott’s opening burst by lashing another 40 runs to the total. A wide full toss from Sams saw Weatherley bring up his fifty from from 34 balls, and the Hampshire No. 4 then spoiled an otherwise-decent penultimate over from Cook by going deep in his crease to slog-sweep a slower ball for six.Howell then helped plunder 14 off Sams’ closer, including a towering six over long-on the ball after being dropped by Snater, and although he was dismissed off the final delivery his 22 off 11 had given Hampshire something to bowl at. Thanks to the rain, however, and Sams late blows, it would not be quite enough.
