Everton want "outstanding" left-back who has outshone Mykolenko this season

Everton are “working” on a potential deal for an “outstanding” defender in the summer transfer window, according to an update from journalist Graeme Bailey.

Moyes eyeing new signings for Everton

The Toffees continue to be linked with possible new signings this summer, with Greece and Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis emerging as an exciting option to make David Moyes’ side more of an attacking force.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed an excellent season, scoring a combined 21 goals in the Champions League and Primeira Liga, registering seven assists across those competitions.

Meanwhile, Everton have also been linked with a shock move for Liverpool winger Ben Doak at the end of the season, which would send shockwaves across Merseyside.

The Scot is on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough and there is no guarantee that he has a long-term future at Anfield, which could lead to Everton pouncing for one of their rivals’ most exciting young players.

Whether the Reds would allow him to join their arch-rivals is up for debate, though.

Everton want to sign "outstanding" left-back

Speaking to Everton News, Bailey said that Everton want to sign Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin at the end of the season, with other Black Cats players also mentioned:

“They are one of the teams who are looking at Dennis Cirkin, the left-back at Sunderland. We know Crystal Palace and Tottenham like him.

“Obviously, Everton are looking at Sunderland with Anthony Patterson, Chris Rigg and Dan Neil. The Championship is a division which David Moyes knows very well.

“Cirkin is someone on their list, and they are doing work on the full-back position, I know that.”

Cirkin may be a Championship player, but he could be a great addition for Everton, having been such a consistent performer for Sunderland over an extended period.

Prior to this weekend’s action, the 23-year-old has scored three goals and bagged two assists in the league this season, highlighting the quality he can provide from left-back, which is five times the amount of goal contributions Vitalii Mykolenko had managed in the Premier League (zero goals and one assist).

Cirkin is a player with plenty of admirers, including former striker Sam Parkin, who has described him as an “outstanding” footballer, saying:

“I think he has been one of the most outstanding players in the division this season. When you watch him live, he is a very good athlete. I think he gets up and down; it is eye-catching, the way he moves with the ball, but his decision-making on the ball and his ability on the ball have been top-class this season.”

At 23, Cirkin still has lots to offer, and the lure of the Premier League could be great if Sunderland fail to earn promotion, so Everton should be looking at him as an excellent option.

Club place huge £17m extra premium on striker Liverpool are trying to sign

Liverpool carry a wide sense of appeal to potential targets this summer, but they may now have a new obstacle to overcome in their pursuit of one of Europe’s hottest properties.

Liverpool look to bolster their ranks this summer

The Reds are nearly there in their quest to lift the Premier League title and there is now tangible evidence that Arne Slot could add some premium talent to his side over the next few months.

According to reports, Liverpool are leading the race to sign Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen, who has emerged as one of the world’s most in-demand young defenders following his excellent displays on the South Coast.

Following news that Virgil Van Dijk has signed a new contract at Anfield, any moves to strengthen a backline already rich on quality would likely go down well among their expectant fanbase.

Winning the top-flight is one thing, but staying at the top next term in the face of a renewed challenge from the elite of English football will be what sets Slot apart, so it is no surprise to see that the Reds also have Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike at the top of their wishlist.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Europa League exit at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur may dampen his desire to stay in Germany, though they remain in contention to seal Champions League qualification via the Bundesliga.

Either way, recent developments surrounding Liverpool’s interest have taken a sharp turn that may throw up an obstacle to any prospective deal.

Worth more than Huijsen: Slot has hit the jackpot on Liverpool "monster"

Liverpool hope to employ this star for many years to come.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 18, 2025 Sky Sports: Eintracht Frankfurt raise Hugo Ekitike asking price

Per Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Eintracht Frankfurt have raised their asking price for Liverpool target Hugo Ekitike to £85.7 million, though he is still deemed ‘likely’ to leave the Bundesliga outfit this summer.

Chief executive Markus Krösche is thought to be behind the move, raising the price by about £17m to try and maximise his profitability following an excellent campaign for the ex-Paris Saint-Germain striker.

Demonstrating his lethal edge in front of goal, Ekitike has managed to place 40 of his 101 shots on target while featuring in the German top-flight and has also earned a non-penalty XG total of 17.20.

Liverpool are clearly big admirers of his talent and want to bring him to Anfield, but they won’t want to be caught in the trap of being held to ransom in negotiations.

FSG will likely have a cut-off point, though the fact Ekitike is still expected to leave may play into the Reds’ hands on this one.

Burnley look to see of Premier League clubs to sign "clever" rising star

Burnley are fighting for promotion to the Premier League and Scott Parker has wasted no time in profiling targets ahead of the summer window, per reports.

Burnley edge ahead of Championship title rivals

Following a chaotic afternoon of Championship action, Burnley emerged at the summit following a vital 2-1 victory over Coventry City on Saturday courtesy of a double from Jaidon Anthony.

Sheffield United’s unexpected slip-up at Oxford United and Leeds United’s dropped points on their visit to Luton Town have played into the Clarets’ hands, with promotion specialist Scott Parker licking his lips at the remaining fixture schedule.

Nevertheless, Burnley also have an eye on next season and potential recruits once the window opens for business. Per reports, out-of-contract Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence could move to Turf Moor on a free transfer.

Despite the Clarets’ appeal as a serious promotion candidate, West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, Coventry City and Wrexham are among other destinations on the table for the Wales international.

On the same token, West Brom star Grady Diangana is on Burnley’s radar and they have been urged to put forward a proposal for the versatile attacker by David Prutton.

Ultimately, any concrete information on high-profile targets will need to wait until the summer. Parker’s men are in a good position with the end of the campaign near, but there is plenty of work to do before celebratory champagne can be cracked open at Turf Moor.

Either way, Burnley are making tracks to lure a rising EFL star to Lancashire despite competition from Premier League clubs for his signature, per recent developments.

Burnley eyeing Bristol Rovers midfielder Kofi Shaw

According to reliable reporter Alan Nixon via The 72, Burnley are eyeing a move to sign Bristol Rovers midfielder Kofi Shaw alongside Premier League duo Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Born in 2006, the 18-year-old has made ten appearances for the Gas this campaign, while his loan spell at Yeovil Town earlier on yielded two goals and an assist.

BySean Markus Clifford Apr 3, 2025

Versatile by nature, the youngster is capable of playing across various roles in the engine room, on either flank or as a foil for the main striker.

Labelled “a clever player” by boss Inigo Calderon, he would likely be deemed as one for the future at Turf Moor, but stockpiling homegrown talent for years to come is a strategy that could save millions down the line if worked correctly.

It remains to be seen the sort of fee he would be available for if Burnley do follow up on their initial interest. One imagines he could be attainable for a relatively inexpensive fee, though only time will tell if a deal is to come to fruition.

'Wants to be involved with the national team' – Naomi Girma insists on playing, only non-NWSL player on Emma Hayes' summer USWNT

Emma Hayes was considering giving Naomi Girma time off this month, but the Chelsea center-back made it clear she wanted to be included in the upcoming USWNT squad, the manager said Wednesday after revealing her roster for three upcoming friendlies.

Girma's inclusion comes as something of a surprise as Hayes has turned to a significant NWSL contingent for the the matches against Ireland and Canada – with 24 of the 25 players in camp coming from the United States' domestic league.

Hayes said that Girma, after discussions, made it clear that she was fit enough to play, and offered her services. She also played in the USWNT's most-recent friendlies against China and Jamaica.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT HAYES SAID ABOUT GIRMA

The USWNT coach outlined her conversation with Girma: "I had a long chat with her about it, and she was like, 'Look, I feel top fresh. I haven't been going back-to-back like all the other players.' She wants to be involved with the national team because she felt she's missed the really key camps for us. And she's still learning what we're looking from her. So we took that decision with all those factors in mind."

GettyWHAT HAYES SAID ABOUT ROSE LAVELLE

Hayes also outlined the importance of the return of Rose Lavelle, who hasn't appeared for the team in more than six months after undergoing ankle surgery.

"We're incredibly excited to have her back with us for multiple reasons," Hayes said. "First of all, her personality and the character in the locker room has been sorely missed the past six months. She's supremely gifted as a football player, and playing between the eight and 10 positions. She's someone who, I think, she's maturing a top level footballer.

"It's where her game has been going in the last 12 months she's she's starting to add new dimensions in between the lines. And I'm so excited for her that she gets back to be back with the team, but also we get to be back with the team when we go to Cincinnati, her hometown – and I know she's extremely excited for that."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Hayes' comments about Girma, and her desire to play this summer, come against the backdrop of controversy with the USMNT and Christian Pulisic, who asked to be removed from the U.S.'s Gold Cup squad to rest and recover. Pulisic has faced criticism from U.S. legends for his decision.

BCCI approaches Gautam Gambhir to become India's head coach

The former India batter is presently the team mentor at KKR in IPL 2024

Nagraj Gollapudi17-May-2024Former India batter Gautam Gambhir is on top of the BCCI’s wishlist to take up the position of India men’s head coach after Rahul Dravid’s term ends at the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.ESPNcricinfo has learned Gambhir, who is currently the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, has been contacted by the BCCI to gauge his interest in the job, and further discussions are expected after KKR complete their IPL 2024 campaign. India spinners bring aggression with their slowness

Despite years of spin bowling being reduced to a chore of not letting batsmen get under the ball, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are inviting them to do exactly that

Sidharth Monga in Centurion04-Feb-20181:02

‘Kuldeep and I always look to bowl slow’ – Chahal

David Miller’s dismissals in both the ODIs look different, but there is a common thread to them. And it not the bowler, who was Kuldeep Yadav in both cases. In Durban, Miller hit Kuldeep straight to short cover; in Centurion, the dismissal was more comprehensive: caught at slip as Miller drove. In both cases, though, Miller met the ball far in front of his body. These balls didn’t drop on Miller alarmingly, he had finished his bat swing by the time the balls arrived. Consequently he didn’t play them under his head, and failed to control the shots.Look at a typical speed pitch map of India’s wristspinners, who have now sounded out a major warning to all the teams in the world, especially after doing well in South Africa too. Hardly any ball bowled by Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal is faster than 55mph. They usually range between 48.5mph and 54.5mph. Imran Tahir, by contrast, swings between 53mph and 63mph. Sometimes Tahir’s slowest ball in a spell is the same as India wristspinners’ fastest.Turns out, in this world of heavy bats, thick edges and small grounds, this slowness is a problem for the batsmen.”I’m actually pretty amazed by how slow they can actually bowl,” Dale Benkenstein, South Africa’s batting coach, said after India took a 2-0 lead in the series. “And obviously if you’re a wristspinner and you bowl slow, then it turns on any surface. But I think because of the slowness, there are also scoring opportunities. I’d rather that we look at that than just plodding around.”The challenge lies in the fact that they bowl very slow. Our spinners bowl very fast. On domestic wickets, we bowl pretty quick, and it’s so much easier to get runs. To be fair, in South Africa we don’t get a lot of spin. So, this is obviously an issue. And I think it’s time to try and introduce into our normal everyday practices to keep playing spin. They’re obviously very confident against the seamers. I guess it might take a little bit of time.”Despite years of spin bowling being reduced to a chore of not letting batsmen get under the ball, Chahal and Kuldeep are inviting them to get underit. They back themselves to do enough with the ball to induce mis-hits and get wickets. And wickets is what they, and their captain, are after.Yuzvendra Chahal in his delivery stride•BCCIChahal, who claimed his maiden five-for in the Centurion ODI, has trained himself to bowl slow against some of the biggest hitters of the ball at the tiniest graveyard for bowlers; Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, he sees it more as changing the pace rather than just bowling slow.”Playing on flat tracks, you have to vary your pace,” Chahal said. “You cannot bowl at one pace. There is bounce available on these pitches. If you bowl fast, the ball won’t turn and it will come on to the bat. That’s why Kuldeep and I vary our pace.”Especially on these grounds and wickets, you have to bowl a little slower. The ground is very small, and they have big hitters. As spinners you can’t bowl faster, otherwise they will play you as medium pacers. There are times when we have to bowl fast, but that depends on the situation. We have to read the situation.”The slowness is a means to an end. The idea is to pick up wickets in the middle overs, which is what India missed before Chahal and Kuldeep were introduced to replace the two best – at that time – Test bowlers in the world. “Whenever Kuldeep or I come on to bowl, we are only thinking about taking wickets,” Chahal said. “That’s why we are in the team, to take wickets in the middle overs. We don’t mind giving away 65-70 runs in 10 overs but if we can take two-three wickets that’s more helpful from our point of view. If we take wickets in middle overs then only the other team will be under pressure.”Virat Kohli’s unflinching belief in them helps. Kohli said he didn’t expect the pitches for ODIs to have any seam movement – which hardly happens anywhere – and he backed his spinners to turn the ball on any hard surface. Both Chahal and Kuldeep say they have been told by the management that runs don’t matter, that they have to go for wickets. ” [show me how to get hit for a six],” as the wicketkeeper tells you in all the in India.”I go for wickets, I flight the ball,” Chahal said. “I know it can go for six too, but when your captain and your team back you, it gives you the confidence to do it. Virat [brother] lets us take the field we want. He tells us it doesn’t matter if we are hit for a six, we must bowl to our strength. If your strength is to flight it, then flight it. When your captain tells you that, you don’t have to worry even if you have been hit for two or three sixes.”It’s easier said than done, though. When you are being hit for boundaries, it is easy to forget these principles. “This is a routine for me,” Chahal said. “In IPL, if I go for 40 runs in four overs, even then I should feel that I have been hit on good balls. It shouldn’t be that I am bowling to escape cheaply. That is my strength, and that is why I am in the team.”These two delightful spinners are almost a forced gift from India to world cricket. When there was clamour for wristspinners well before Champions Trophy, India kept on going with reputation and possibly didn’t want to give out a debut in the Champions Trophy. In times when aggression can easily be mistaken for posturing and only pace, these India spinners are being aggressive with their slowness. And they have full backing from the management.

Dimuth Karunaratne, the cool captain for Sri Lanka's high seas

A few months of his leadership appear, against all expectation, to have steadied the national team

Andrew Fidel Fernando17-Aug-2019The selectors are making strange picks, the board is trying to sack another coach, the sports minister is making serious overreaches, the XI changes from series to series, but from amid this chaos, which to many has seemed like the wreckage of a once-was cricketing power, Dimuth Karunaratne has eked out a small but significant patch of stability. He came to the captaincy at a time of extreme vulnerability. The team was at the start of a third leg of a Southern Hemisphere tour in which they had not won a single match after two-and-a-half months on the road. He also had a vastly inexperienced attack to call on, and a couple of key senior players were missing. Before his first series at the helm he seemed like a farmer who had inherited an operation where the crops had been burned, the barn was on fire, and whose fences had been torn apart, and yet somehow he managed to strap all his livestock to the same plough and had them pulling in the same direction. Sri Lanka became only the third team ever to beat South Africa in their own backyard. And they did it 2-0. This is the craziest result of the year. Of any year. Months later, you’re still expecting to wake up from the dream.A middling World Cup as ODI captain followed, and unless you’re the kind of hyper-optimistic fan who goes to sleep in a Sri Lanka shirt and craps blue and yellow, a middling World Cup was the best that could have been hoped for. Through the course of it, Lasith Malinga was shooting verbal bazookas in every direction, and cardboard cutouts of some middle order batsmen might have scored more runs than the batsmen themselves, and yet, the team did not look anywhere near as directionless as they could have done. That Karunaratne was the fourth one-day captain in nine months was practically forgotten. This has been an era of farcical and unprecedented turnover in Sri Lanka cricket, for coaches and captains, yes, but also for boards and sports ministers, but a few months of Karunaratne’s leadership appears, against all expectation, to have steadied the national team. In the ongoing Galle Test, a second-day middle-order collapse aside, Sri Lanka have done all the things expected of a determined Test-match outfit. They’ve hounded out the New Zealand batsmen who have looked uncomfortable. Those batting well, they’ve tied down and forced into corners. And where normally, New Zealand outfield Sri Lanka by such an extent that they may as well be playing different sports, Sri Lanka have arguably made more of the chances that have come their way, in this Test. Now, for the first time in seven Test innings, Karunaratne has himself hit a half-century. It is far from one of his best. He was dropped once at least, and could have been stumped. He played the cut like it was an addiction, and missed probably half the time. But making tough runs such as these in the fourth innings of a Galle Test, is a vital pillar in any captaincy. Although his team won in South Africa, there was no substantial contribution from Karunaratne himself. His unbeaten 133-run stand with Lahiru Thirimanne has not only moved Sri Lanka almost halfway to their target, it is also their best-ever opening stand in the fourth innings of a Test.”Both those knocks are invaluable,” said acting coach Rumesh Ratnayake at stumps. “We saw how well they bowled and how hard we fought to get this 133 runs. It wasn’t all from the middle of the bat. It’s just that they had something called ‘wanting to be there and wanting to stay there’. That was the talk from what Dimuth said before as well. Dimuth brings a lot of calmness to the team.”If Sri Lanka go on to win this match – and there is no guarantee that they will, on what is still a surface that can throw up several wickets at once – Karunaratne’s 73 not out will have provided an excellent platform. It would be their third consecutive impressive chase, with both South Africa Tests having been won batting last as well. But Test chases are infamously treacherous, and a century of convention says there is no such thing as a reliable fourth-innings outfit. But then Sri Lanka have been finding consistency in strange places lately.

Tata extends IPL title sponsorship deal till 2028

The five-year extension, from 2024 to 2028, cost Tata INR 2500 crore (US$301 million approx.)

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2024The Tata Group has extended its title sponsorship of the IPL for another five years, from 2024 to 2028, for INR 2500 crore (US$301 million approx.), making it the “highest-ever sponsorship amount in the history of the league,” a BCCI statement said. The group were the IPL title sponsors in 2022 and 2023, and are also the title sponsors of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).”The collaboration with TATA Group for the title sponsorship of IPL 2024-28 is a significant milestone in IPL’s journey,” IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal said. “The record-breaking sum of INR 2500 crore by TATA Group is a testament to the immense value and appeal that the IPL holds in the world of sports.”This unprecedented amount not only sets a new benchmark in the history of the league but also reaffirms the IPL’s position as a premier sporting event with global impact. TATA Group’s commitment to cricket and sports is truly commendable, and we look forward to scaling new heights together and providing fans with unparalleled cricketing entertainment.”The Tata Group had replaced Vivo as IPL title sponsors for the last two seasons. The BCCI had temporarily severed ties with Vivo, a Chinese mobile and technology company, following political tensions between India and China in June 2020. Vivo had originally bagged the title sponsorship for 2018 to 2022 for INR 2199 crores (US $341 million approx. at the time), but for the 2020 season, it was replaced by Dream 11, before Vivo returned for the 2021 season.Tata’s bid for the next five years is a 13.7% jump over what Vivo had paid for 2018-22.”This collaboration embodies the spirit of growth, innovation, and a mutual dedication to excellence,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said. “The unprecedented financial commitment reflects the immense scale and global impact of the IPL on the international sports stage.”The 2024 IPL will be played from March 22 and run till the end of May, just before the men’s T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1.
