Rabada on transformation: 'I'm a black player, but I'm not invincible'

“It didn’t put any more pressure on me at all, being the only black player in the team; that would’ve been torture”

Firdose Moonda30-Jul-2024If Kagiso Rabada had kept thinking that he was the only black African player in South Africa’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, he would have gone through “torture” through the tournament. He said bearing that burden “didn’t put any more pressure on me at all”. Instead, Rabada embraced his role and encouraged a broader discussion on issues of transformation.”I’m a black player, yes. If I don’t feel like I should have been there on merit and if people don’t feel that way, then it’s fine. I’m not invincible. I can be dropped as well but I believe in myself,” Rabada said from Trinidad, where South Africa are preparing for a two-Test series against West Indies.Asked whether he was aware of the focus being put on the numbers of players in the squad – and in particular the black African contingent – and whether that created more expectation on him, Rabada said, “It didn’t put any more pressure on me at all. It would be such a heavy thought, during a World Cup, thinking about yourself being the only black player in a team. That seems like torture for me. That just takes away from focus.”Related

  • CSA to address transformation issues holistically

If there’s one thing South Africa were at the tournament, it was focused. They enjoyed their most successful men’s World Cup and went on an unbeaten eight-match run to reach their first final. They lost, narrowly, to India but earned praise for their progress. However, they also faced criticism from various political and administrative quarters over the composition of the squad, which was also a major discussion point at CSA’s recent Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Indaba (DEI conference).CSA has acknowledged the failure of its policies to produce sufficient black African players, in particular, for the national squad, and has promised to respond to white-ball coach Rob Walter’s plea for the domestic system to “up the ante” ahead of the home World Cup in 2027. But the board also recognises the need to keep the current transformation numbers at an acceptable level for the sports ministry to be happy and has had to answer questions over why its T20 World Cup 2024 squad included only one black African player. So Rabada understands why he is in the spotlight.”These are certain challenges [we face] and you ask a valid question because you wonder how players must have felt in the past, how players in the future might feel. And these are things we need to address,” he said. “For me, it was just about winning [the World Cup]. But for other players, you never know how it feels. And also, what the media has to say about the situation can really mess up the players’ psychology or psyche. Those are certain things that we have to make peace with in South Africa because there’s a very unique landscape. And this whole transformation thing, it always seems to bubble up when we’re at World Cups for some reason.”A quick history lesson: South Africa have had transformation targets in place since 1999, seven years after readmission, which means the impetus to change has existed for 25 years. Initially, the national team was required to field four players of colour (any players who were not white) in every XI but since 2016, the target has become more specific but less rigid. Now, the national men’s team is required to field, on average over the course of a season, six players of colour of which at least two must be black African. The calculation of the target as an average means that the numbers do not apply to individual games, which meant they could go into the T20 World Cup with only six players of colour in the squad, and just one black African, but make up the target elsewhere in the season. This was the first time since 2016 that a South African World Cup squad only had six players of colour and the first time since 2015 that they have only had one black African player.Kagiso Rabada and South Africa fell at the final hurdle at the T20 World Cup•ICC/Getty Images

It was in fact, the 2015 ODI World Cup that caused a rethink, after Aaron Phangiso – the only black African player in that squad – went through the tournament without playing. It was also the 2015 World Cup where the transformation agenda resulted in interference in selection when then CEO Haroon Lorgat called coach Russell Domingo the night before the semi-final to remind him of the commitment to fielding four players of colour in each XI. Vernon Philander was then picked ahead of Kyle Abbott for the match against New Zealand. At this T20 World Cup, South Africa only ever fielded four players of colour per XI, and only one black African – Rabada. Although it was never explicitly stated that Rabada would be expected to play every game, had South Africa gone into a match without him, they would have had no black Africans in the side. He ended as their second-highest wicket-taker behind Anrich Nortje. The inclusion of Rabada, as a South African all-time great, in XIs is hardly ever up for debate but he explained there may be instances in which players of colour have cause to question themselves.”You ask yourself, what are some of these factors that might make a player feel that way [that they are only included because of their colour], and it’s factors such as we lost because of transformation or because we had to include players of colour or black Africans. And that always happens in World Cups,” he said. “When we’re winning series and we’re winning or losing other games, it’s not so much of an issue, so that’s where it might be a bit inconsistent. And if you ask yourself truthfully, looking back in the past, have we not won a World Cup because of transformation? You know, I mean, like, really? So sometimes things can get blown out of proportion.”Looking at 2015, it cannot be argued that South Africa lost because of transformation. The selection interference came in the semi-final, and there’s no knowing how they would have played against Australia in a final in Melbourne. The 2022 T20 World Cup was different, where South Africa committed to picking an underperforming Temba Bavuma, because he was the captain. But they had little chance of lifting the trophy in any case. They were eliminated in the group stage after losing to Netherlands in one of their worst World Cup shows. So Rabada, and CSA DEI Mudutambi Ravele, who last week asked whether the 2024 T20 World Cup squad did well “because they didn’t have black players” are right: South Africa have not lost a World Cup because of transformation. But there are still discussions to be had about how best to manage the issue of redress and a player like Rabada, who carries the current baton for black cricketing excellence, understands that.”It’s a unique system and a lot of people have different opinions on it because of where our country comes from,” he said. “And it’s not a system that is particularly easy to just understand and move on from. It’s something that has to be looked at in context.”And he is also able to separate those thoughts from the idea of celebrating achievement in whatever colour it comes. Asked to respond to South African swimmer Tatjana Smith winning the Olympic Games gold in the 100-metre breaststroke in Paris, Rabada did not miss a beat in celebrating her while identifying the similarities and differences between them.”She’s been making us proud. She’s phenomenal and really inspiring. When I look at that as an athlete, it makes me want to achieve the same feat,” he said. “She’s a white swimmer and I’m a black man, but as an athlete and as someone who wants to aspire to be better and better, I think she’s done a remarkable job. And people are watching. And they want to emulate that. Whatever field that they’re in, they just want to do the same things that these people are doing, representing us all over the world.”

NZ win big after blowing away Uganda for 40

Southee and Boult picked up five wickets between them to demolish Uganda, as New Zealand completed the small chase in 5.2 overs

Trent Boult delivered searing, full inswing, Tim Southee went at the stumps as well, before Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra tested both edges of the bat with their left-arm spin. The result was another Uganda collapse at the T20 World Cup, their inexperienced batters simply unable to contend with the quality of New Zealand’s bowling.Uganda were all out for 40 in the 19th over, with only one of their batters – Kenneth Waiswa – having made double figures. They struck three boundaries all through their innings, and were unable to find scoring options, the New Zealand bowlers frequently beating their bat.New Zealand ran down the target in 5.2 overs, with the loss of just one wicket.Boult homes in on the stumps earlyEven top batters from more established teams would have been tested by Boult’s first over. He began with a couple of inswinging yorkers to Ronak Patel, who managed to to get off strike second ball.Boult’s next two deliveries were big-swinging, and pinpoint. First he had left-hander Simon Ssesazi plumb in front, before cleaning up Robinson Obuya with a delivery that curved in through the gate. After Boult delivered that double-wicket over, conceding just one run, Southee bowled a maiden, then Boult delivered another maiden – Uganda’s top order often unable to make contact. The pair bowled right through the powerplay, and left Uganda 9 for 3, with Southee having trapped Alpesh Ramjani in front in his second over.Spinners and Ferguson wreck Uganda’s middle orderThen it was over to Santner, Lockie Ferguson, and Ravindra. Santer struck first, drawing the outside edge of Ronak, held nicely by wicketkeeper Devon Conway.Ferguson then took out Waiswa’s stumps. Even Riazat Ali Shah, and Dinesh Nakrani looked incapable of scoring against New Zealand, and by the end of the 14th over, Uganda were seven down for 27.Their only minor consolation was getting past the 39 – their lowest T20 total ever – they had slumped to against West Indies. The pursuitThe chase was largely smooth, and the only wicket Uganda got had a touch of good fortune about it – Riazat getting Finn Allen caught down the legside with a full delivery.New Zealand had trouble hitting boundaries too, finding the rope only twice in the first four overs. But with such a small target, singles and twos would work too. Conway finished the game with back-to-back boundaries off Jumo Miyagi.

Arsenal make their move! Gunners agree personal terms with Noni Madueke as Chelsea look to cash in on winger and complete latest deal between London rivals

Arsenal have reportedly agreed personal terms with Noni Madueke, as the Chelsea winger closes in on a move across London to the Gunners.

Gunners close in on MaduekePersonal terms agreed with playerWill be second signing from Chelsea this summerFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, the Gunners have agreed a five-year deal with Madueke and his camp and a formal proposal is reportedly imminent as the two clubs prepare to negotiate a transfer. Mikel Arteta would like to add the versatile winger to his ranks as he looks to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the new season.

What had been a quiet start to the summer transfer window for Arsenal has now burst into life. Martin Zubimendi has been announced in a deal worth near £60m from Real Sociedad, while personal terms have reportedly been agreed with two players in one day, in the shape of Madueke and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. Getting both deals over the line would go a long way to solving the Gunners' lack of firepower in forward positions for much of last season.

DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal have made quite a habit of signing players from London rivals Chelsea in recent times. Madueke could become the fifth player to swap blue for red in the capital since 2023, following Jorginho, Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling and, most recently, Kepa Arrizabalaga. It can be argued that none of the above were a resounding success, though Jorginho was an effective squad player and Havertz still has time on his side. Kepa put pen to paper in a £5m deal to move to the Emirates earlier this week and 23-year-old England winger Madueke could soon follow.

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR MADUEKE AND ARSENAL?

Arsenal head off for their pre-season campaign in Asia on July 19 and Arteta would likely hope to have the bulk of his transfer business completed before then. Chelsea are still competing in the Club World Cup and will likely hold off on selling Madueke until it is over, with the final taking place on July 13. But all parties are believed to be open to the deal.

Hayley Matthews' 78 helps West Indies finish series 4-1 against Pakistan

Hayley Matthews ended her dream tour of Pakistan as she started it, with yet another commanding performance as West Indies coasted to an eight-wicket win in Karachi. Smashing 78 in 59 balls, the West Indies captain made light work of Pakistan’s first innings total of 134, with the visitors getting there with ten balls to spare. West Indies won the series 4-1.West Indies demonstrated Thursday’s indifferent performance was an aberration, and were right on it from the moment they won the toss and put Pakistan in to bat. Pakistan started brightly with a 38-run opening partnership in five overs, and after Qiana Joseph cleaned up Ayesha Zafar following a 16-ball 22, Sidra Ameen and Muneeba Ali went about rebuilding effectively. By the 12th over, the hosts sat pretty at 84 for 1, ostensibly set up for a big finish. But, led by legspinner Afy Fletcher, West Indies engineered an almighty Pakistan collapse. Only Rameen Shamim, whose late unbeaten 11-ball 16 got Pakistan past 130, managed double figures after the top three. Pakistan lost seven wickets for 37 runs as Fletcher, Joseph and Matthews all cashed in, strangling the innings until Shamim’s final-over flourish. Sidra top-scored for Pakistan with a 52-ball 48.But West Indies had the momentum, and never truly ceded it. Matthews started cautiously once more, allowing Rashada Williams to inflict the early jabs. Sadia Iqbal got rid of her in the fifth over, but that brought out Shemaine Campbelle, who, together with Matthews put together a 103-run partnership, terminally ending any Pakistan hopes of another consolation win. Towards the second half of that innings, Matthews seemed to be finding boundaries at will, 11 of them sprinkled throughout her innings as she surpassed 50 and helped her side hurtle towards what suddenly looked like an inadequate target. Campbelle, meanwhile eased along for an unbeaten 33 off 35, happy to play second fiddle at a master in full flow.Pakistan did manage to get Matthews out one final time in the series, Nashra Sandhu knocking her stumps back. But by then, West Indies needed just seven to win, and Matthews’ work was done.

Mohammad Amir's six-for, Najmul Hossain Shanto's ton among BPL 2019-20 highlights

We take a look at the best performances with the ball, with the bat, and in the field

Mohammad Isam18-Jan-2020Best spellsMohammad Amir 6 for 17 v Rajshahi Royals
Khulna Tigers needed a big performance from their premier fast bowler in the first qualifier, and Mohammad Amir responded brilliantly. He took 4 for 11 in his first three overs, ripping out the Rajshahi Royals’ top order – he swung one back in to Liton Das’ off-stump, had Afif Hossain and Alok Kapali caught behind, and Andre Russell caught at midwicket after being cramped for room – to leave them at 23 for 5. Amir returned to send back Taijul Islam and Shoaib Malik, who had scored 80 from 50, to finish with the best figures in BPL history. Amir also ensured Khulna were the first team to reach the final.Wahab Riaz 5 for 8 v Rajshahi Royals
Wahab Riaz had Liton and Kapali caught behind, before Shoaib too tickled one down the leg side to the wicketkeeper. All in one over, a maiden. He later wrapped up the innings with the wickets of Nahidul Islam and Kamrul Islam. Interestingly, substitute wicketkeeper Jaker Ali took four of those catches, eventually finishing with six catches in the game. Dhaka Platoon won the game by a whopping 74 runs.Mehedi Hasan Rana 4 for 28 v Cumilla Warriors
Among Mehedi Hasan Rana’s two four-wicket hauls, this was the better show, because often Bangladeshi pace bowlers can’t really follow up one good spell with another. Rana duped Soumya Sarkar with his length before clean bowling Bhanuka Rajapaksa. He also trapped Sabbir Rahman lbw to make it three wickets in his first spell. Then when Dawid Malan had got to 80 and was looking threatening, Rana came back to have him caught at deep midwicket. That gave Chattogram Challengers a 16-run win in a high-scoring game.Najmul Hossain Shanto hit a sparkling century against Dhaka Platoon•Raton Gomes/BCBBest inningsNajmul Hossain Shanto 115* v Dhaka Platoon
Having scored 115 runs in eight innings, the pressure was on Najmul Hossain Shanto to deliver for Khulna. As they chased 206 runs against Dhaka, that pressure became even more. But Shanto finally responded, with a superb maiden T20 century, and doubling his tally in the season’s BPL. Not known as a big-hitter, Shanto mixed slogs with attractive shots around the wicket, including cover drives and late cuts. By the time he reached his century, Khulna were well and truly in a winning position, and eventually got to the top of the points table with an eight-wicket win.Andre Russell 54* v Chattogram Challengers
With a place in the final at stake and with the required rate getting away from them, Rajshahi needed a true Andre Russell special to keep them in the competition. They needed 85 off the last 6.4 overs when Shoaib Malik fell, but Russell slowly took it down, piece by piece. Against the impressive Rana in the 18th over, Russell took the game away from Chattogram altogether. He smashed him for two sixes and a four, and then Rubel Hossain for more in the following over, before smashing the winning six in the last over.Dasun Shanaka 75* v Rangpur Rangers
If this innings had come in a playoff game, Dasun Shanaka would have become an instant hero in Bangladesh. Still, his nine sixes and three fours in an extraordinary unbeaten 31-ball 75 took Cumilla Warriors from a difficult 89 for 6 to an above average 173 for 7. Shanaka got stuck into Lewis Gregory, Mustafizur Rahman and Junaid Khan in the last three overs. One of his sixes, off Mustafizur, landed on the roof the grandstand, probably the only time someone has been able to clear that part of the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Cumilla then bowled out Rangpur for just 68, to win by 105 runs.Ryan Burl moments after pulling off a special catch in the BPL•Chattogram ChallengersBest catchesRyan Burl v Rangpur Rangers
Mohammad Shahzad’s swing of the bat often goes into unpredictable directions, so when he tried to slam Kesrick Williams over mid-off, the splice took it over point. Ryan Burl ran back, positioned himself nicely and then dove to complete the catch. He even managed to keep his sunglass on.Imrul Kayes v Rajshahi Royals
It was a good BPL campaign for Imrul Kayes with the bat, and he topped it off with a brilliant running catch at the long-on boundary in the second qualifier, against Rajshahi. He intercepted a strong drive from Mohammad Nawaz towards the end of the chase, running to his right, and diving full length near the boundary rope. Chattogram went on to lose the game but Imrul’s catch was among the best in the tournament.Rilee Rossouw v Sylhet Thunder
In search of quick runs as he looked to build on Sylhet Thunder’s good start, Mosaddek Hossain threw his bat around, attacking Robiul Haque. But Rilee Rossouw jumped high at cover, and caught the ball one-handed over his head. It was just the start of a superb BPL season for Rossouw, who would go on to take another superb catch in the playoffs, apart from finishing as the tournament’s top run-getter.

Wolves now rival Saudi clubs in race to sign "great" winger once worth £70m

In what would be one of the most interesting moves of the summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly battling clubs in Saudi Arabia to sign a new winger who was once worth over £70m.

Wolves likely to have Cunha fee to spend

In Vitor Pereira’s first summer in charge, it seems likely that he will have the chance to welcome a number of arrivals or, at the very least, a couple of star names to replace Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward reportedly has a release clause worth around £63m in his current deal and has attracted the likes of Manchester United as a result.

If triggered, Wolves will receive that hefty fee before potentially turning towards the transfer market themselves. To that end, a number of names who could arrive to ease the Cunha blow have already been mentioned in recent weeks, from the likes of Samuel Lino all the way to Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

Pereira is certainly well aware of the quality that he’ll need to replace if Cunha does depart this summer, having told reporters after the Brazilian’s decisive display in a victory over Leicester City: “He is a special player.

“When he feels the happiness inside, when he is himself, he can create. He played a fantastic game. It shows he is committed with us, with his team-mates, with everyone.”

Wolves want "incredible" 25 y/o Atletico Madrid star who may replace Cunha

The Brazilian forward could depart this summer.

ByTom Cunningham May 4, 2025

Alas, no matter how special Cunha is, Wolves are likely to have the task of finding the heir to his Molineux throne this summer. Just who that might be remains to be seen, but that hasn’t stopped a fresh option from threatening to steal the headlines as of late.

Wolves join race to sign "great" Nicolas Pepe

According to FootMercato, Wolves are now battling clubs in Saudi Arabia to sign Nicolas Pepe from Villarreal this summer. The former Arsenal winger has shown glimpses of his quality during his time in Spain and could now find himself on his way back to the Premier League in a shock move this summer. Once worth a reported £72m when he joined the Gunners, Wolves may well land what would once be considered a bargain deal in the coming months.

That said, if Pepe is to replace Cunha, then Wolves must consider the risks. With two goals and four assists in all competitions in Spain this season, the winger still struggles for output just as he did in Arsenal colours. And that’s something which is unlikely to undergo a dramatic improvement at the age of 29 years old.

A player who skipped past Virgil van Dijk on his Arsenal debut at a time when doing exactly that was a task deemed almost impossible and a player once praised as “great” by manager Mikel Arteta, Pepe’s return to the Premier League would certainly be interesting to watch.

Everton now willing to pay £16m+ to sign 20 y/o midfielder alongside Delap

Everton are believed to be willing to pay £16.8m to complete the signing of a midfielder who possesses “enormous qualities” this summer.

Everton pushing to sign £30m Liam Delap

The Blues have been linked with various potential new signings of late, but Liam Delap is a name who has stood out as a particularly exciting option, as they look to bolster their attack ahead of next season.

It has been claimed that David Moyes has even held face-to-face talks with the Ipswich Town striker, who looks almost certain to leave Portman Road in the summer transfer window, following relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.

Delap has enjoyed a hugely impressive season, despite the demise of his own team, scoring 12 goals in 32 starts in the league, which is three more than any Everton player managed in the competition, with Iliman Ndiaye leading the way with nine strikes.

The 22-year-old stands out as a brilliant option for the Blues with a £30m release clause, considering he is a young striker who should only mature as the years pass, and he should be looked at as the leading choice to come in and lead the line at the club’s new Bramley Moore Dock stadium this summer.

Everton also ready to pay £16.8m for new midfielder

According to a new update from Africa Foot [via Sport Witness], Everton are ready to pay £16.8m to sign Lille midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau this summer, having sent scouts to watch him in action in recent weeks.

He is actually valued at £12.6m by the Ligue 1 club, but the Blues are willing to bid higher to get their man, seeing him as another strong option alongside Delap.

Mukau may not be as well-known to Everton fans as Delap, due to him not playing in the Premier League, but he is an exciting young player in his own right.

The 20-year-old has scored twice in six Champions League starts this season, as well as averaging 1.5 tackles per game across 22 matches in Ligue 1 in 2024/25. Meanwhile, Lille head coach Bruno Genesio hasn’t held back in his praise of him, saying:

Everton keen on stunning signing of "special" Liverpool ace in shock move

This piece of business would create shockwaves.

ByHenry Jackson May 24, 2025

“He’s an aggressive player, with a big volume of play, capable of recovering balls from the opponent’s feet. He’s also a forward-thinking player, who can get forward from the first touch and find verticality.”

Lille president Olivier Letang has also described him as a “very likeable lad” with “enormous qualities”, adding that “he burst onto the scene” and “we know his potential and his state of mind.”

Everton could do with fresh blood in the middle of the park, considering Abdoulaye Doucoure is leaving and Idrissa Gueye is now well into his 30s, and Mukau could be a great choice to add into Moyes’ squad.

  • Couple due to wed in Spain
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on Friday following an investigation spanning more than three years. The charges are related to complaints from three women. The announcement from the CPS came just four days after Partey's contract with Arsenal ran out and he formally left the club following unsuccessful talks to sign a new deal. And GOAL understands it comes just one day before he was due to get married in Spain.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Partey got engaged to English model and influencer Janine Mackson in the summer of 2024. Mackson gave birth to the couple's daughter earlier in 2024. At the end of the 2023-24 season, when Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City, Partey was seen introducing Mackson and their daughter to coach Mikel Arteta. Mackson posted pictures last month on Instagram of what appeared to be a bachelorette party in Ibiza, captioning the post 'A weekend full of love'. The post was liked by Partey. GOAL has contacted Arsenal and Partey's representatives for comment although neither immediately responded. It was not clear whether the wedding would go ahead although it is understood Partey was in Spain on Thursday.

  • WHAT WAS SAID?

A defence lawyer for Partey told : "Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Partey was first arrested on suspicion of rape in July 2022. It was announced at the time that an unnamed Premier League footballer had been arrested. However, his identity was quickly revealed online. As a result, Partey was booed on many occasions by opposition fans, most notably when he came off the bench in extra-time of the Gunners' FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United in January.
