How Pujara and Rahane repelled Lyon

Both batsmen fell cheaply in the first innings in Bengaluru but after some minor technical adjustments they put on the only wicketless session of the series so far and helped India draw level in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Kohli applauds quick-thinking Pujara, Rahane

Opposite the practice area at the JSCA International Stadium is a staircase leading up to one of the stands. Ascending one level gives you a terrific view of the nets, with an elevated, square-on view of the batsmen. Imagine standing atop a watch tower at cover point. It is a view you hardly see on TV and the one restricted to the cheaper seats in most stadiums because from here it is near impossible to judge the line of the ball and the extent of swing, seam or turn accurately. But it gives you such insights into a batsman’s technique.India’s net sessions on the two days leading up to the third Test against Australia offered an excellent opportunity to watch Ajinkya Rahane’s footwork against the spinners. Cat-like, nimble, fully forward or fully back. As has mostly been the case since he lowered his stance – a move that contributed to his twin hundreds in the Delhi Test against South Africa in 2015. His head was right on top of the ball when he stretched forward to defend. When Cheteshwar Pujara batted against seam, it was possible to observe how his hands never once strayed even six inches in front of his body when he defended the ball. He grips his bat in an unusual manner, his top hand turned so far around the handle that the back of his hand – rather than his knuckles as is the norm – faces the bowler. While this can hamper his freedom while driving, it ensures he plays closer to his body, and later than most batsmen on the planet. His defensive bat is a cushion that invariably drops the ball by his feet.Just over a week ago, these skills played their part in steering India through what has so far been the only wicketless session of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Through the course of their 118-run fifth-wicket partnership, Rahane and Pujara turned the Bengaluru Test around, slowly, calmly, with growing authority. The partnership also showcased two batsmen coming to grips with a bowler who had caused them and their team all kinds of problems the last time they had faced him. Nathan Lyon had dismissed both Pujara and Rahane while taking eight wickets in the first innings, and while there were moments of discomfort in the second innings too – Pujara was dropped on 4 – both men grew increasingly at ease, eventually keeping Lyon out for a combined 131 wicketless balls. On Wednesday, the eve of the Ranchi Test, India captain Virat Kohli revealed the technical adjustments the two batsmen had made to overcome Lyon.”I saw Pujara opening up his stance, which was an apt adjustment for him to give himself more space to play the ball,” Kohli said. “Ajinkya, again, getting inside the line of the ball and not playing through the covers. I think those are the small adjustments. KL [Rahul, who made fifties in both innings] is batting well anyway but I think those two guys stepped up their game and found a way to score runs on a difficult wicket.”And as I mentioned, that was the difference between winning a game and probably not winning it because there could have been only two results, the draw wasn’t there on the cards anyway. Such minor things can make massive differences in the game. We saw that and credit to those two guys to get runs on that sort of wicket.”Armed with Kohli’s insights, it was rewarding to re-watch Pujara’s 92 and Rahane’s 52 in Bengaluru.A slightly open stance helped Cheteshwar Pujara handle Nathan Lyon and his extra bounce•Associated PressRahane had been stumped in the first innings, while looking to step out and drive Lyon inside-out. It is a shot he plays well, but on this occasion, looking for non-existent turn, he had simply swished at thin air. In the second innings, he changed his guard: his back toe was in line with off stump rather than between middle and off. This brought him closer to the line of the ball, and ensured he was playing with the spin more often than not.It also made the sweep an easier option: from his original guard, he would have had to plant his front leg a fair way across to get his pad outside the line of off stump, thereby cramping him up and minimising the arc into which he could hit the ball. From his new off-stump guard, he did not have to stretch as far across to get close to the ball get his front pad outside the line of off stump. He could be better balanced and sweep the same delivery square or fine, depending on the field. The sweeps played their part in forcing Lyon to bowl wider, returning to Rahane the scoring option he had initially denied himself – the push or drive into the covers. At one point, the ease with which Rahane was handling him made Lyon switch to bowling around the wicket. This, for India, represented a small victory over a bowler who had tasted so much success bowling into the footmarks outside the right-handers’ off stump.A ball that spat out of these footmarks had led to Pujara’s first-innings dismissal, caught bat-pad. In his stance, Pujara’s feet had been aligned to point straight down the pitch, but a front-and-across trigger movement then left him closed-off and cramped up when the ball turned and bounced more than expected.By opening his stance, Pujara gave himself a better chance of negotiating Lyon’s extra bounce out of the rough. There were at least two occasions when this adjustment proved useful. Coupled with his usual ability to play the ball late and close to his body, the offbreaks that jumped at him now hit the part of the glove facing the bowler rather than that facing the fielders at short leg or leg gully.Being chest-on also made it easier for Pujara to play the pull should Lyon drop the ball marginally short. From the five times he played the shot, he collected three singles, a boundary and inside-edged a ball that kept low onto his pads.It wasn’t all plain sailing, of course. The slightly open stance may well have been a factor in Pujara, twice, playing inside the line of the ball and therefore outside-edging Lyon. It is possible that due to the change in his alignment, Pujara’s bat came down at an angle – from wide slip towards mid-on – on both occasions leaving him vulnerable. Had Smith snaffled up the slip catch he offered, Pujara’s open stance may well have come in for criticism rather than praise. Every little technical adjustment solves one problem while potentially creating another. On a difficult pitch, bowlers were always likely to create chances, no matter how ingenious a batsman’s plans might be. Smith, a beneficiary of multiple dropped catches while scoring a second-innings hundred in the Pune Test, knew this well. He had compiled the technical masterclass of the first Test, by playing for Ravindra Jadeja’s straighter one, minimising the risk of bowled and lbw, and not worrying about getting beaten on the outside edge.Pujara and Rahane had matched him with their own masterclass in Bengaluru. With spin likely to remain the dominant theme of the series, who will follow them up in Ranchi?

Club World Cup Scouting Report: Expect Manchester City to be on a mission after worst Premier League season in 10 years

Pep Guardiola's side might have lost their clutch on the Premier League crown, but should in the mix this summer

Manchester City, crisis club? It is sort of fun to say – or at least, see. From the neutral perspective, having someone other than the Cityzens win the Premier League, at the very least, makes for a refreshing change of pace.

And City have deserved their struggles this season. They have looked tired, out of ideas, frustrated. Erling Haaland is injured. Kevin De Bruyne is leaving. They lost the reigning Ballon d'Or winner to an ACL tear. Rotten luck? Sure. But it has made the Premier League that little bit more interesting.

The season is done now, though. City will finish third. They are winning games again, looking more like a Pep Guardiola side. Odds are, they will claim the FA Cup with a victory over Crystal Palace next month. And the Club World Cup, in some ways, could be a reset.

De Bruyne might be gone by then. New signings such as Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez will have been allowed to properly settle in. Haaland should be approaching full fitness. This machine could be whirring back into life again. Still, it might just come a bit too soon. There are no guarantees here, with tired legs and fitness issues likely to play a role.

A fully fit City should win this thing. Anything short of that? Then it's anybody's game.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be played in 12 stadiums in 11 U.S. cities, from the opener on June 14 until the final on July 13. In the U.S., fans can stream or watch matches on DAZN or TNT. Leading up to kickoff, GOAL will provide scouting reports on each of the 32 participating teams in the expanded field.

Next up is Manchester City with a look at key players to watch, and expectations for the English side at the tournament.

Ironically, Man City have rather struggled in European competition, and finally won their white whale of a trophy in 2023 after many years of glorious failure. And it was that victory that sealed their spot in the tournament, Rodri scoring the only goal in a 1-0 clash against Italian giants Inter.

ImagoThe player to watch

Who else but Haaland? The striker hasn't enjoyed his best season in Manchester blue, struggling a bit for form, and then picking up a serious ankle injury in March – just as he was getting in a goalscoring groove.

Still, the expectation is that he should be fit an firing by the time the tournament comes around. It will, in truth, be interesting to see which version of Haaland shows up. Will it be the razor-sharp Nordic force that will batter through the tournament and lead City to glory?

Or will Guardiola work his main man back into the side steadily, saving him for the big moments? It is an interesting storyline to follow in a tournament admittedly lacking in them.

A word, too, for Phil Foden. The attacking midfielder followed a Premier League Player of the Year winning season with a pretty dire Euro 2024 – and equally miserable domestic season. He needs to turn things around, and this summer could be the time to start.

Getty Images SportRealistic expectations

Win the whole bloody thing.

Somehow, the Club World Cup field has gotten weaker as the season has chugged along. Real Madrid look a shadow of themselves, while Bayern Munich and Inter have struggled either domestically or in Europe.

Only PSG look to be at 100 percent heading into the competition. But a weaker field should make for an ample hunting ground for City. They will likely do away with Al Ain, Wydad and a pretty tepid Juventus side. After that, it's the knockouts – at which point City should be off to the races.

West Ham have been in talks over signing Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, as reliably reported by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, while it is believed that Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson could be signed Hammers technical director Tim Steidten on loan.

Awoniyi is no longer Forest’s first-choice striker, despite flashes of brilliance in 2023/2024, with the Premier League’s fifth-top scorer Chris Wood currently far ahead of the Nigerian in Nuno Espirito Santo’s pecking order and loving life right now.

This could potentially free up the possibility of a move for Awoniyi, but at the same time, Nuno most likely won’t be keen on losing a capable back-up striker mid-season. Ferguson, meanwhile, is facing an uncertain future at Brighton and Fabian Hurzeler has admitted that he could depart on a temporary deal.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates

“We will negotiate what is important for him, what is important for his development, where he can improve the best, and then we will make the decision together,” said Hurzeler on Ferguson’s future.

“This decision should be what is best for the player and for the club. We sent (Facundo) Buonanotte, for example, to Leicester.

“We know that the Premier League is a very good league to improve, because it’s tough, it’s intense, especially for young players. It’s the perfect environment to adapt.”

RB Leipzig hitman Andre Silva is attracting serious interest from West Ham as well, according to reports in Germany, so there are plenty of targets who the east Londoners are considering right now, as Steidten and co-chair David Sullivan seek to provide Potter with a goalscorer.

Graham Potter "clear" he wants Jonathan David at West Ham

According to a new report by The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Lille star Jonathan David is firmly on the West Ham boss’ personal radar.

David, who’s scored a brilliant 17 goals and registered six assists so far this campaign, has bagged a career total of 169 for club and country combined at just 25-years-old.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

To make matters even more attractive for the Irons, he’s also out of contract at the end of this season – meaning he could leave for a cut-price January fee, agree a pre-contract overseas or decide on his next club at zero cost in the summer.

The Canada international’s pending availability makes him a very attractive option, and potentially one of the bargains of 2025. Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Man United are all considering an approach to David, as are West Ham.

As per TBR’s information, West Ham are ready to make an offer to David, and Potter has made it “clear” to the club that he wants them to compete for the Brooklyn native’s services.

David is quickly growing his reputation as a “world-class” centre-forward, and arguably what West Ham need. However, they’ll have to wait until later in the year to seal his signature for nothing.

Farke could find his next McLean in Leeds swoop for "special" £7m star

Leeds United still have plenty of football left to play between now and the end of the season in their pursuit of automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

The Whites failed to finish in the top two in the 2023/24 campaign, finishing third in the table, and ultimately lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley back in May.

Daniel Farke and his men will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that failure by finishing first or second in the Championship this time around, and they are on course to do so.

A thumping 4-0 win over Oxford United at Elland Road on Saturday ensured that they remain second in the table, three points behind Sheffield United, heading into Christmas Day.

The January transfer window is right around the corner, though, and the Whites could look to strengthen their chances of achieving automatic promotion by dipping into the market to bolster their options across the park.

One area of the pitch that could be addressed is central midfield, and a player Farke previously wanted at Elland Road in that position was Norwich City star Kenny McLean.

Leeds United's bid to sign Kenny McLean

In the summer of 2023, shortly after the German’s arrival in West Yorkshire, Leeds were interested in a deal to sign the Scotland international from the Canaries.

It was reported that the Whites had an offer of £4m rejected by Norwich for the former Aberdeen star, who later put pen to paper on a new contract at Carrow Road.

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

He would have arrived as someone Farke trusted as he was a regular for the German head coach in two Championship title-winning seasons, in the 2018/19 and 2020/21 campaigns, with McLean playing 114 games in all competitions for him during their time together.

The Whites would have been signing an experienced midfielder who knows exactly what it takes to get automatically promoted from the second tier, having done it twice with the Leeds boss in Norfolk.

After the West Yorkshire outfit failed to get a deal over the line for McLean, the Scotland international then played a key role in the Canaries reaching the play-off semi-final clash with Leeds.

As you can see in the table above, the 32-year-old star started all 46 of their league matches and offered quality as a box-to-box midfielder, with his contributions at both ends of the pitch.

McLean is a dynamic midfielder who can provide quality in possession, with his creative passing, whilst also being able to hold his own defensively, winning the majority of his physical contests in the Championship.

Instead of going back in for the experienced ace, Farke could find his new version of McLean in the January window by swooping for one of the club’s reported transfer targets.

Leeds United's interest in English midfielder

Back in November, The Sun revealed that Leeds are one of the clubs interested in a deal to sign Nottingham Forest central midfielder Lewis O’Brien, who is currently on loan with LAFC in the MLS.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claimed that LAFC have an option to make the deal permanent for £7m when the January transfer window opens for business, but there are English teams who would like to compete with them to sign him.

It stated that Leeds and Hull have both made enquiries about a potential swoop for the former Huddersfield Town star, who is settled in America and would like to stay there long-term.

Football Insider added that the Whites have been long-term admirers of O’Brien and that Marcelo Bielsa once wanted to bring him to Elland Road, and came close to doing so.

The report added that Nottingham Forest have deemed him surplus to requirements, hence the £7m option to buy in his LAFC loan contract, and he is set to be available in the January transfer window.

It is down to Leeds, however, to convince O’Brien that a move to Elland Road ahead of the second half of the season is a better option than remaining in the MLS with his loan club.

Why Leeds should sign Lewis O'Brien

The Whites should try to sign the left-footed midfielder because he could come in as Farke’s new version of McLean in the middle of the park, as an experienced and dynamic number eight who can provide quality in and out of possession.

As per FBref, McLean is one of the most similar players to O’Brien in the Men’s Next 14 Competitions (outside of the major five leagues and European competitions) over the last 365 days, based on their respective statistics.

As you can see in the chart above, the two central midfielders rank incredibly similarly in a host of actions, defensively and offensively, per 90 for LAFC and Norwich respectively.

They are both progressive players who want to get the ball forward to find their teammates in dangerous positions. McLean has averaged 5.78 progressive passes per 90, whilst O’Brien has averaged 6.11 per 90 in the MLS – ranking in the top 25% of his positional peers in he Men’s Next 14 Competitions.

As you can see in the table above, the £7m-rated star can also offer a defensive presence in the middle of the park, with 8.9 tackles, interceptions, and recoveries per game in the MLS this year.

The 26-year-old dynamo, who was described as “very special” by ex-Leeds coach Carlos Corberan, could come in to provide Farke with another left-footed option in that position, as the injured Ilia Gruev is his only left-footed midfielder at this moment in time.

With Joe Rothwell’s loan expiring at the end of the season, O’Brien could also be a longer-term solution for the club, which is why he could be an excellent addition to the squad.

Qais, a globe-trotting T20 specialist, had topped the wicket-takers’ list in that tournament, with 14 wickets in eight outings at an economy of 6.35. Qais has plied his trade in Australia’s Big Bash League, the Caribbean Premier League, the Lanka Premier League and England’s T20 Blast. Most recently, he was signed by Gulf Giants for the inaugural edition of the International League T20 to be played in the UAE next January.Rasooli had played only two games for Amo Sharks in the Shpageeza Cricket League, but in those two he smacked 41 not out off 19 and 51 off 30.While Saleem is yet to debut in international cricket, Qais and Rasooli have played a handful of games for Afghanistan. Qais has debuted across all three formats, but his last game for Afghanistan was on the tour of Bangladesh in March. He has demonstrated good glimpses of [what he can do] in the previously held Shpageeza Cricket League 2022, and offers an additional batting option to our middle order.”Since the Australian conditions are fast-bowling friendly, so we have added [Mohammad] Saleem, a tall right-arm quick, to add further impetus to our bowling department.”Afghanistan’s previous T20I assignment was the Asia Cup in the UAE, where they impressed by thumping eventual champions Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the first round before falling narrowly short of upsetting Pakistan in a dramatic Super 4s game. From the squad that played that tournament, Samiullah Shinwari, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Karim Janat, Noor Ahmad and Afsar Zazai miss out. Imagine him & Gakpo: Liverpool want to sign £50m ace who’s outscoring Salah

Arne Slot has engineered victories over Real Madrid and Manchester City in the past week, dispatching both without conceding a goal and consolidating Liverpool’s position as Premier League and, to a lesser degree, Champions League favourites.

The nine-point Premier League lead over Arsenal and Chelsea, united in second place, bears testament to the Dutch coach’s unflappable mentality and innovative tactics, shaping Jurgen Klopp’s talented team to his own design.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

Redmen from all angles have stepped up to bring elation to the Merseyside masses, who can scarcely believe the incredible start to the season that has suggested an illustrious finish is on the horizon.

At the front, though, is Mohamed Salah. The 32-year-old’s future is up in the air but this is hardly affecting his performances, notching a brace against Pep Guardiola’s withered crop to raise his haul to 11 goals and seven assists across 13 top-flight appearances this term. He’s posted six goal contributions from seven matches in further competitions.

It’s clear that Salah wants to renew his £350k-per-week salary, but whether FSG bypasses their strict wage structure remains to be seen. Time’s ticking. Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is prudently looking at potential successors, and he’s found an excellent choice to possibly replace the Egyptian king.

Liverpool eyeing Salah replacement

The Athletic have reported that Salah is open to extending his Liverpool contract by a single year but is frustrated by FSG’s handling of the situation. It’s not a good look, whichever angle it is viewed from.

The fact is, FSG have their parameters and will not acquiesce to Salah’s demands if they are deemed untenable. If the dreaded eventuality becomes reality for the Reds, Omar Marmoush is the player who is being lined up to take his place according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

Marmoush, Salah’s teammate with Egypt, has been in remarkable form for Eintracht Frankfurt this season and carries the kind of dynamic attacking qualities that would allow him to dovetail into Slot’s high-flying system.

The £50m-rated forward has been brilliant this season, for sure, and could forge a deadly partnership with Liverpool’s attacking options, especially Cody Gakpo.

Imagine Omar Marmoush & Cody Gakpo

Marmoush, who is 25, scored 17 goals across 41 appearances for Frankfurt last season as he established himself as one of the most promising forwards in German football.

This season, the Egypt international has been on a different level, harvesting 17 goals and 11 assists across 19 matches in all competitions, meaning that he is incredibly outscoring Liverpool’s very own Salah.

As per FBref, the 5 foot 9 ace also ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 2% for shot-creating actions per 90, thus showcasing a creative side to his game that would see him emulate Salah as an elite multi-faceted attacking outlet.

While Marmoush is typically found at centre-forward, his pace and movements allow him to operate on the left wing too, promoting his playmaking side. This could see him flourish alongside Gakpo, whose own positional versatility has been streamlined this term, and he is now reaping the rewards.

Goals against Real and Man City have taken the Netherlands international’s haul to eight goals under Slot’s wing, though it’s more impressive still when seeing that he has actually only been handed ten starting berths.

Cody Gakpo scores for Liverpool

Exclusively posting his strikes from that left channel, it’s fair to say that Gakpo is loving life under his compatriot’s wing, and is actually thriving with Luis Diaz as the pair jockey for placement on the left.

As you can see below, Salah’s defence-splitting arced pass undid the shaky City backline on Sunday, finding the surging Gakpo and sending Anfield into an exultant roar. He had no trouble bundling the ball in, and it’s something that Marmoush might have taken note of.

Gakpo’s hardly just a marksman either, once hailed for his “special skill set” by Klopp’s former assistant manager Pep Lijnders, endowed with physical strength, shifty motions and impressive technicality that might just see him forge an innate bond with the equally dynamic Marmoush.

Though it’s easy to get ahead of the track, Liverpool fans must remember that there is plenty of football still to be played this season, with twists and turns and bumps and blocks all sure to threaten the Anfield side’s place in the ascendency.

Salah might be the cream of the crop, but players such as Gakpo are proving to offer quality fit for the biggest and shiniest titles.

To lose Salah at the supposed height of his powers is unthinkable, and surely must not be allowed to happen, but Liverpool will need to replace their 32-year-old phenomenon at some stage, and Marmoush is blessed with the talent to succeed in his stead.

Alongside Gakpo and co over the coming years, it might even be a move that maintains Liverpool’s position at the very summit of English and European competition.
