Yorkshire bring in Lord Patel of Bradford as chair after emergency board meeting

Two non-executive directors step down in wake of Roger Hutton’s resignation

George Dobell05-Nov-2021Yorkshire have appointed Lord Patel of Bradford as the club’s chair after a board meeting in the wake of Roger Hutton’s resignation on Friday, with two more non-executive directors also stepping down as part of the fallout around the handling of the report into allegations of racism by Azeem Rafiq.Yorkshire’s new chair knows more than most about the evils of racism. Growing up, Kamlesh Patel had to deal with the issue on a daily basis. Now he hopes that experience will serve him well in helping Yorkshire rebuild from perhaps the most serious crisis in its history – which included revelations that the panel cleared a player of wrongdoing over use of the word “P**i” on the grounds that it was banter between friends.”When I was a boy I developed into a very fast runner,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “Do you know why? Because gangs of skinheads used to delight in what they called P**i-bashing and you either learned to run or you took a beating.”So that word – the P**i word – has real meaning for me. I don’t need to be told it’s not banter.”Patel looks an astute choice. Born in Kenya, but brought up in Bradford when his parents moved to the UK about a year later, he knows the area, loves cricket and has copious experience. Having trained as a social worker, he was subsequently appointed as Chair of Social Work England and, before that, chair of the Mental Heath Act Commission. He has previously served on the board of the ECB as a senior independent director and had been invited to join the Yorkshire board in recent weeks anyway. His Asian heritage is, of course, also relevant. The club needs to prove to potential supporters, sponsors and players that it is committed to providing a more inclusive environment. Patel provides tangible evidence that times have changed. He experienced, he says, “loads” of racism while playing league cricket in the region as he was growing up. And while he believes the situation has improved somewhat, he is under no illusions.”I grew up at a time when you used to see those ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No dogs’ signs,” he says. “I experienced loads of racism playing cricket.”I think things have improved. But sometimes it just feels more subtle now. Sometimes I still wonder why, if they’re telling me I’m a rubbish bowler, they have to make mention of the colour of my skin at the same time.”He has a tough job, though. While non-executive directors Hanif Malik and Stephen Willis – the latter of whom was on the panel that helped produce the report into Rafiq’s allegations of racism – have stood down, the executive directors, notably Mark Arthur, the chief executive, and Martyn Moxon, the director of cricket, remain. While they do so, it is hard to see the club managing to improve its reputation.Crucially, Patel remains close to Colin Graves, too. Representatives of The Graves Family Trusts, which are owed around £18m by the club, have a veto on anyone joining the Yorkshire board. So while Graves, who is understood to remain loyal to Moxon and Arthur, may have been disappointed not to reclaim the chairmanship of the club, he has accepted the appointment of Patel.”The club needs to learn from its past errors, regain trust and rebuild relationships with our communities,” Patel said. “There is much work to do, including reading the panel’s report, so we can begin the process of learning from our past mistakes.”Yorkshire is lucky to have a vast talent pool of cricketers, and passionate supporters, from all of our communities and we must re-engage with everyone to make a better Yorkshire County Cricket Club for everyone.”

Wolves agree £10m deal to sign experienced international player

Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a transfer fee that will see them sign a Premier League player with international experience, according to a new report.

It has been a quiet transfer window for the Midlands side so far, but with just over two days left of the transfer window, things could soon start to heat up for Gary O’Neil’s side. Given that Wolves have started the campaign with back-to-back defeats, the club may be looking to do a bit more business as they try and get their season up and running.

Better than O'Shea: Wolves looking at late move for "dominant" defender

He is rumoured to have a release clause in his contract

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 28, 2024 Wolves transfer news

Wolves have so far brought three new players to the club over this summer, as well as adding Tommy Doyle, who spent last season on loan at Molineux, on a permanent deal. But O’Neil is probably looking to do more business, as he will want his squad as strong as possible as they look to build on last season.

One area that Wolves seem keen on adding to is their defence, as the Premier League side were keen on signing Dara O’Shea, but they have missed out on him, as he’s now joined Ipswich Town. But according to a fresh update, Wolves have now turned their attention to Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic. They are said to be ready to “step up” their pursuit of the international defender after missing out on O’Shea.

But as well as looking at improving defensively, Wolves are also said to be interested in signing former Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha. It has been claimed that Wolves have joined the race to sign the winger, who currently plays for Turkish side Galatasaray. Given that Wolves have sold Pedro Neto and Max Kilman, they have some money to spend, and they are now among the clubs interested in bringing Zaha back to the Premier League.

Wilfried Zaha scores for Crystal Palace against Brentford.

It is believed that Galatasaray are looking to get around £9 million for the former Manchester United and Palace winger, but first they've wrapped up a deal for a reinforcement at the back.

Wolves agree £10m fee for Sam Johnstone

According to Sky Sports News, Wolves have now agreed a £10 million fee with Crystal Palace to sign 4-cap England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

It is being reported that advanced negotiations are still ongoing, but the deal is getting closer to being completed. Wolves have reportedly faced competition from Southampton, but have won the race for the England international.

The 31-year-old has been with Palace since July 2022, when he joined the club on a free transfer from West Brom. He has gone on to play 34 times for the South London side, with 20 of those games coming last season in the Premier League, as he conceded 27 goals and kept six clean sheets in the process.

Johnstone was a standout performer during his time with West Brom, as he was described as being “sensational” by former England striker Gary Lineker back in 2021.

Scorchers surge to fourth BBL title after batting recovery act

Scorchers were 4 for 25 before an audacious century partnership between Evans and Turner powered them to a competitive total

Tristan Lavalette28-Jan-2022Laurie Evans smashed 76 under pressure then quick Andrew Tye took three wickets as Perth Scorchers won a record fourth BBL title and exacted revenge over shorthanded Sydney Sixers with a crushing 79-run victory at the Marvel Stadium. In a re-match of last season’s decider, Scorchers were in serious trouble at 4 for 25 after being sent in before an audacious century partnership between Evans and captain Ashton Turner powered the hot favourites to 6 for 171.Their star-studded attack then proved irresistible to end Sixers’ bid for a historic third-straight title. Having broken the deadlock for most titles with their arch-rival, Scorchers may have notched their sweetest triumph having been on the road for 50 straight days due to being shut out of Western Australia’s closed borders. They faced a depleted Sixers without openers Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards, who were ruled out with Covid-19, while batter Jordan Silk failed to recover from a hamstring injury sustained against Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday where he controversially retired hurt before the match’s final ball.A third bid for an exemption allowing Steve Smith to play was blocked by the BBL, while Jay Lenton, an assistant coach for Sixers, took the gloves for the second straight match.Scorchers, however, deserved the spoils having dominated all season in a golden summer for the franchise which also won the WBBL title two months ago.Evans and Turner rescue Scorchers
Scorchers endured a horror show early and their worst four-over powerplay of the season, which yielded just 14 runs on a tricky pitch. Worse was to follow with an uncharacteristically reckless Scorchers repeatedly throwing away their wickets under Marvel Stadium’s closed roof due to heavy rain in Melbourne.Mitchell Marsh, who came in with a hamstring niggle, struggled and didn’t get off the mark until his ninth delivery. He didn’t last much longer as Scorchers appeared to be melting on the big stage.Instead of rebuilding, a bold Evans and Turner launched a counterattack and quickly smashed 33 runs off 13 balls after the seventh over to turn the momentum. English import Evans has had an under-the-radar debut BBL season but his energetic batting made him a key cog of Scorchers’ middle order. He played his best innings of the season as he fearlessly attacked Steve O’Keefe and was ably supported by Turner. The red-hot duo each registered half-centuries with sixes before Turner fell shortly after. It didn’t hurt Evans’ momentum as he unleashed several astounding cover drives to lift Scorchers to a total that appeared beyond them after four overs.Andrew Tye struck twice in as many balls but missed a hat-trick•Getty Images

Tye caps superb Scorchers bowling effort
Scorchers were without an ailed Marsh’s bowling, meaning Turner had to chip in with his offspin. He came on after the powerplay and his golden night continued with the scalp of Nick Bertus – just his second wicket of the season. As usual, Scorchers were miserly and overwhelmed the weakened Sixers batting order as all six bowlers claimed at least a wicket. Tye capped a superb season as he ran through the lower order to soon have Scorchers celebrating in style.Sixers never in the hunt
Hayden Kerr produced an all-time great innings of 98 not out to get Sixers into the final but the emerging allrounder couldn’t repeat the heroics. He fell in the second over and Sixers’ hopes slumped at 3 for 46 after the departure of captain Moises Henriques. The burden fell on Daniel Hughes, who returned from an ankle injury, and he looked in good touch although struggled to run between the wickets. But he lacked support and when his gutsy knock ended with a run-out on 42, Sixers ran out of gas as they fell to Scorchers for the fourth time this month.Sixers’ spinners star early
Sixers did start well and an upset was on the cards. They resisted using star spinners Nathan Lyon and O’Keefe in the powerplay and it did the trick.Sixers’ seamers bowled superbly and their accurate lengths outside off stump frustrated a shackled Scorchers, who were unable to target the ground’s short square boundaries. Then O’Keefe and Lyon ran rampant with two wickets each as Sixers gained a stranglehold. But Sixers were rattled by the brave batting of Evans and Turner as they let slip of the initiative. O’Keefe returned in the 16th over and picked up the wicket of Turner to finish with 2 for 43 in potentially his last BBL match.

As Bayern looked to break the deadlock in an important clash against St Pauli, the man to step up was young Musiala. Until his moment of magic, the visitors had struggled to break down their opponents and get the likes of Harry Kane involved in the game. But the 21-year-old picked the ball up outside of the box and hit the ball sweetly with his laces. It flew towards the goal, dipping over goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj and smashing the crossbar on its way in.

Tottenham approached by reps over signing £250,000-p/w ace who Mbappe rates

As the Premier League campaign nears, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been approached by the representatives of a rival midfielder over a potential deal this summer.

Tottenham transfer news

After a mixed debut season which ultimately ended in failure to qualify for the Champions League, Ange Postecoglou and Spurs have endured a slow summer transfer window so far, welcoming just two fresh faces. The standout of their arrivals has undoubtedly been Archie Gray, who completed a move from Leeds United to join the already-arrived Lucas Bergvall.

Tottenham in constant talks with 149-goal striker who'll cost Levy £20m

He’s been in fine form for years.

1 ByEmilio Galantini Jul 19, 2024

The 18-year-old enjoyed an excellent season in the Championship last time out to emerge as one of the best young talents that English football has to offer. Earning a deserved move as a result, it was Spurs who swooped in to win the race for his heavily sought-after signature earlier this summer. The midfielder-turned-right-back featured for the first time in Spurs colours as they swept Hearts aside 5-1 in their first pre-season friendly.

Now potentially turning their attention to more experienced options, the Lilywhites have reportedly been offered the chance to sign a Premier League rival. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, the representatives of Mason Mount have approached Spurs over a potential deal this summer, with Manchester United now reportedly open to selling the midfielder just one year on from his £60m arrival.

A Chelsea academy graduate, Mount's move to North London could certainly steal plenty of headlines but it remains to be seen whether Spurs would be willing to secure his signature and pay his reported £250,000-a-week salary. Nonetheless, there's no doubt that it would be one of the most interesting moves of the summer and one that may revive Mount's career.

"Superb" Mount would be perfect for Ange

Whilst things are yet to work out under Erik ten Hag, Mount could stand a better chance at rediscovering his best form under the guidance of Postecoglou. The Australian's high-energy system may suit the former Chelsea man perfectly, who would be provided the license to press high and finally find his creative intuition again, possibly next to James Maddison.

mason-mount-manchester-united-ten-hag-james-garner-everton-transfer

Even after a period to forget at Manchester United, it's worth noting that Mount still has plenty of fans around European football, with Kylian Mbappe once saying via The Metro when asked who he'd like to see France Football interview: "Gigi because I would like to know what he is going to do next, Messi, because he does not speak much, so we would discover things. Mason Mount, because he is a superb player that we don’t yet know much about."

It's quite the company and quite the praise for a player who desperately needs to find his form, whether that be at Manchester United or by completing a move away to Spurs this summer. With just over a month until the transfer window slams shut, Mount is one to watch.

USMNT winger Haji Wright was the hero for Coventry City Saturday afternoon, with the winger scoring a crucial winner in second half stoppage-time to defeat Luton Town 3-2. The strike, a scrappy tap-in, helped complete their stunning three-goal comeback after going down 2-0 to start the match.

His fifth goal of the season, Wright found the back of the net for the second-straight match, after bagging a goal on Oct. 22 in a 1-1 draw with QPR.

Speaking after the match with Sky Sports Football, Wright was thrilled with the goal, despite the sloppy nature of it. "I don't really care as long as they go in. It was an important goal for us, you know, we were working throughout the 90 minutes to get a result like this, and for it to happen this way is amazing."

Asked if he felt a momentum shift in the second half, the U.S. international replied "Yeah, 100 percent," while adding "Even our play in the first half gave us a bit of confidence, we knew we were creating chances and it was just a matter of time before we took one."

With Saturday's victory, Coventry climbed out of the relegation zone in the championship after a poor start to the season, a campaign that Wright deemed "frustrating."

"We still have loads of new players and our team's quite young, so, we're still trying to find that gel, to find that perfect tempo to play at and we're still finding our feet a bit, but today was a great result."

In every single match Wright has scored in this season, Coventry have claimed a result. Saturday was also the 26-year-old's second stoppage-time winner of the year, with his first coming on Aug. 16 against Oxford United.

Emotional Chris Rushworth breaks record as Durham power to victory

Durham 246 (Lees 99, Tongue 5-39) and 389 for 5 dec (Young 103, Burnham 102*) beat Worcestershire 213 (Fell 44, Leach 42*, Rushworth 5-56) and 164 (Mitchell 62, Rushworth 4-52) by 258 runs Chris Rushworth orchestrated a brilliant 258-run win for Durham in their LV= Insurance County Championship clash against Worcestershire, on the day he became the county’s all-time leading first-class wicket taker.Rushworth claimed his 528th first-class wicket for the club by removing Jack Haynes, breaking his tie with Graham Onions that he matched in the first innings. The 34-year-old notched figures of 4 for 52, while Mark Wood and Brydon Carse were equally impressive with three and two wickets apiece, to dismiss the visitors for 164.The emphatic victory moves Durham into second place in Group One in the County Championship, three points behind Essex. Worcestershire lost their first game of the season, but they remain in fourth place despite their crushing defeat.Rain prevented play in the first hour of the day, but Daryl Mitchell quickly found his rhythm to pass fifty for the third time this season. Rushworth almost secured his record-breaking scalp when Jake Libby clipped a stroke towards mid-wicket. Jack Burnham attempted to corral the ball, but he could not hang on with a diving effort.Related

Wood turned to short-pitch bowling to make the breakthrough, hitting the glove of Mitchell, which forced the opener to require treatment. The following delivery Wood went short again, and this time Mitchell fended straight to short leg.Carse made an immediate impact with his first delivery of the day, pinning Tom Fell lbw for 1. It could have been better for Durham in the first hour, but David Bedingham dropped a routine catch at first slip after Ben Raine found Libby’s outside edge. However, Bedingham atoned for his error to hand Rushworth his record-breaking scalp, collecting a low edge from Haynes to take the seamer clear of Onions. The wicket prompted emotional scenes among his team-mates and a salute to his dad in the Emirates Riverside car park.”I could not be any prouder, especially with my dad in the car park as well,” Rushworth said afterwards. “I was very emotional, I don’t think I’ve ever been as emotional as that on a cricket pitch. I’ve played in Lord’s finals and a Championship win, but that tops the lot.”It has been on my mind and you could probably tell with the spells on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Other milestones have not entered my mind before, but because this one was so big and it has been close for a while, it was getting to me. To get it done, I can get back to bowling without worrying and winning more games for Durham.”Despite the catch to break the record, Durham’s problems in the slips continued as Scott Borthwick put down Brett D’Oliveira off Wood, but the England man returned to prise out the batsman in his next over.Durham smelled blood in the water, and Rushworth jagged a delivery back into Riki Wessels to pin him lbw. Wood performed the same feat to end Libby’s stubborn resistance for 36. Ed Barnard continued the procession and was powerless as he feathered an edge behind from a fine Carse delivery, leaving the visitors seven down. After the tea break, Rushworth allowed the home side to close in on their second win of the campaign. He was on the mark to dismiss Joe Leach and Ben Cox lbw, displaying pinpoint accuracy. Borthwick claimed the final wicket to wrap a hugely impressive win for his side to put forward their credentials for the County Championship.”We were outplayed by a better team this week,” Worcestershire coach Alex Gidman said. “They played a lot better than us in their home conditions and we have to take it on the chin.”We were going to lose a game at some stage and this week Durham were a better team than us. We didn’t play good enough cricket over the four days. Their bowling attack is as good as we’ve seen this season. The lads are disappointed that we didn’t perform well enough in this game, but we’ll support them to the hilt.”
