Scott Borthwick's stunning century transcends a manic 18-wicket day at Chelmsford

It’s fair to assume that Durham were a little bit pumped for this one. Five long years ago, at the end of the 2016 season, these two clubs swapped places in the first and second divisions, and with it, their places in the national pecking order. Essex, promoted as champions, duly embarked on their run of three first-class titles out of four, while Durham’s financially-imposed relegation brought a punitive end to their own indisputable golden age – between 2008 and 2013, they had racked up each of their three Championship titles, with three further one-day titles in the space of eight years. And so, like a heavyweight title that had changed hands without any punches being thrown, there was something extra at stake at Chelmsford, in the two counties’ first first-class meeting since September 2010 – a bygone era, when Durham themselves had been the two-times reigning champions, and when Essex’s failure to force victory on the final day effectively opened the trapdoor to their own relegation.By the close of a bruising opening day, the two combatants had punched each other senseless – 18 wickets falling all told, in a sea-change from the circumstances on this same ground last week, when 21 had been grudgingly handed over in the course of four full days. And though Essex were the side finishing with a surge in the semi-darkness, with four wickets falling for as many runs before the close, it was the performances of the two Durham survivors from that previous encounter 11 years ago who had hoisted their side into the ascendancy.Scott Borthwick and Chris Rushworth have had contrasting experiences since that desperate relegation season. The former headed south to Surrey, in search of the new beginnings that might earn him a chance to add to that solitary Test cap, handed out in such invidious circumstances on England’s whitewash Ashes tour in 2013-14. The latter held firm up north, keeping the home fires burning as he marched ever onwards in Durham’s domestic annals – and with a superb analysis of 11-8-13-3 here, he moved along to 512 wickets, 15 shy of Graham Onions’ all-time record. But in a day dominated by the bowlers, nobody played a more glorious hand that the prodigal son Borthwick, who produced an urgent, emphatic innings of 100 from 129 balls, while his team-mates managed a grand total of 48 for 8 between them. Though he was crestfallen to be dismissed in the dying overs of the day, his efforts had driven Durham to a priceless lead of 52 by the close, and batting last against the chastened champions, they may yet need every run of that advantage.Borthwick cracked 15 fours in his innings, as powerful on the sweep against the spinners – the ever-dangerous Simon Harmer in particular – as he was graceful on the drive, with his high-elbowed crunch through the covers off Ben Allison to move to 96 being the absolute pick of the crop. One ball later, he whipped a leg-stump delivery behind square, and ripped off his helmet with glee. After scores of 0 and 1 in an anticlimactic return against Nottinghamshire last week, this was the home-from-homecoming that he had dreamed of. Whether it will be a victorious one, however, remains to be seen.Essex won the toss and chose to bat on the sort of morning that might have given them pause for thought against a bowling attack forged in the Arctic winds of Chester-le-Street. But then again, having endured the tedium of Worcestershire’s only innings in last week’s season opener, their bowlers had plenty reasons to pass the buck on that score, especially given the lack of complication with which Tom Westley had racked up 213 on the first two days of that game.It took Rushworth just three deliveries to suggest to Essex that life wasn’t going to be quite that placid, as Nick Browne dangled his bat uncertainly outside off, and detonated his own leg stump with a fat inside-edge. Three overs later, he extended Alastair Cook’s uneasy start to the season by thumping a well-planted knee-roll to send him on his way for 6.At the other end, Matt Salisbury – revisiting his roots after coming through Essex’s academy as a teenager – had already scalped Westley for 4, via a flat-footed drive that betrayed his team’s mindset, or lack thereof. Essex had parked such shots in grinding along to 207 for 3 on the opening day of the season, but Westley wasn’t interested in relaying his groundwork. He and his team seemed in a collective hurry to get a move on today. That became a rather more literal experience when Brydon Carse entered the fray in the 14th over. Generating sharp pace from the outset, his first-ball loosener had more heat that Paul Walter was anticipating, as he wafted an under-edged cut onto his stumps for 7. And before the over was out, Essex were 36 for 5 and facing humiliation. Carse’s well-directed short ball thumped into an upraised bat as Ryan ten Doeschate ducked for cover, and a fast flat deflection fizzed to Ned Eckersley at third slip.Brydon Carse celebrates a wicket with Durham team-mates•Getty Images

Throughout all of this, Dan Lawrence cut a phlegmatic figure at the non-striker’s end – he’d seen it all before, in rather different surroundings, throughout England’s winter exertions in Sri Lanka and India. By the time a rain flurry brought about an early lunch, Lawrence was batting like a man with a different agenda – he’d already cracked his first ball, from Rushworth, through wide long-on, and had added four more cleanly struck fours to stride along to 32 not out, with Adam Wheater solid alongside him in a sixth-wicket rescue-stand of 38.Straight after the break, however, Essex were right back in the soup. Ben Raine’s first delivery of the session was dangled outside off, for Wheater to nibble fatally to second slip for 18. But it was Salisbury’s intercession, 11 balls later, that scuttled any hopes of a fighting total – a superb delivery that bit the seam on a full and tight length, lifting past the edge of a resolute block to trim Lawrence’s bails and send him on his way without addition. At 74 for 7, there were only scraps left for Essex to fight for.Harmer couldn’t delay Durham’s march, as he prodded limply to slip for a duck, and Ben Allison fared little better, as Rushworth found his edge too to finish with the outstanding figures of 3 for 13 in 11 overs. Only Sam Cook found any meaningful resistance with a free-spirited innings of 15 from No.10, but the end to his stay was savage, as Carse bend his back once more, and David Bedingham swallowed a flap off the eyebrows to slip.Essex’s total of 96 was their lowest at Chelmsford since 2014, and after Worcestershire had ended their 11-match home winning streak last week, a far greater ignominy awaited.Durham’s response faltered early, as Alex Lees fell early to Sam Cook, who found some sharp lift on the angle across the left-hander to prise him out for 5. But Borthwick joined Will Young in what appeared to be a game-seizing stand of 87. Between them, they surged past Essex’s total with a riotous acceleration from the end of the 20th over, all but doubling the score from 46 for 1 to 98 in the space of six overs as Porter and Harmer were battered for nine fours between them. But then, on 24, Young got too frisky against a sharp offbreak from Harmer, and flicked a leg-glance straight into Lawrence’s lap at leg slip to break both the stand, and Durham’s hot streak. One over later, Bedingham skipped down the pitch to Harmer, seeking to keep up the tempo, and holed out to Westley at long-on for a duck. And when Jack Burnham was skittled by a beauty from Cook, angling in and bursting round the edge of a full-faced block, Durhan were 114 for 4 and wobbling.Borthwick, however, was having none of it. Two more crunching sweeps kept up the pressure on Harmer as he marched into the 90s, and a few overs later he had his moment of catharsis off Allison. His team-mates, however, could match neither his tempo or his endurance, as Eckersley joined the procession with a deflected lob to slip off Harmer. And with the light closing in, Borthwick’s own resistance was finally broken. Lawrence, into the attack for a twin-spin assault, fizzed through his defences before cleaning up Carse one ball later with a ripping offbreak that sent a clear message about how this contest may yet play out in the second innings. At 144 for 7, it seemed we were done for the day … but not so. With Prince Philip’s impending funeral causing the first two days of this game to be extended, the players trooped back out at 7pm to finish off their allocation, and Durham’s innings was all but finished off full-stop, as Ben Raine became Harmer’s fourth victim of a quietly predatory display. If this is what we’ve been missing out on in the past 11 years of non-combatance, then Essex and Durham have gone a long way towards making up for lost time.

Liverpool star is "the best finisher in the PL" and he's not even a forward

Manchester City issued a sobering reality check to Arne Slot’s Liverpool before the November international break. The Reds were thrashed at the Etihad, and the good work of previous matches unravelled.

Did it? Liverpool might have lost five of their past six outings in the Premier League, but there have been signs of improvement over the past several weeks, and now there is optimism that the club can kick on and rediscover the fluency that has been stripped away since the summer.

So many issues. One of which is that last season’s Premier League champions are struggling in the final third. Here is one of the biggest concerns that Slot needs to get rid of quickly.

Why Liverpools forwards are struggling

Mohamed Salah has not been himself this season. There are many different reasons why this might be. He has turned 33, but the all-powerful Egyptian should still be performing at a higher level than he has languished this term, too often drifting through matches, missing big chances and lacking the requisite defensive work rate.

There has been a lot of upheaval. The sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich having had a more detrimental effect than had been anticipated, but such a loss of electric pace and dynamic attacking play was always going to be hard to compensate for, even with the likes of Florian Wirtz added to the fold.

Wirtz has flattered to deceive, but he is a world-class player and will surely come good. Likewise, Alexander Isak has not clicked into gear after his British-record £125m transfer from Newcastle United on deadline day. The Sweden striker, 26, hasn’t had a pre-season, and injuries have limited him to a bit-part role thus far.

Liverpool’s wider creative problems and the overarching lack of coherence have made it all rather difficult, but Slot has a shrewd tactical mind and will surely unearth a solution sooner rather than later.

As a collective, Liverpool’s frontline need to do better. However, Slot must look to open up different attacking dimensions too, with one of his Red midfielders having emerged as the most accurate finisher in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool's best finisher

Liverpool have got many talented goalscorers in their ranks, but the fact that, statistically, Ryan Gravenberch is the cream of the crop in that regard underscores the need to unleash him in attacking phases with greater regularity.

Signed from Bayern Munich by Jurgen Klopp for £34m in 2023, Gravenberch put the final strokes on a much-anticipated midfield rebuild which has defined the Anfield side’s illustrious success of the past few terms.

However, after languishing on the fringes for his first year, Slot’s advent came to redefine the Netherlands international’s time on Merseyside, dropped deeper into a number six role last season and becoming indispensable en route to the Premier League title. Gravenberch was named the PFA Young Player of the Year.

However, the 23-year-old didn’t score across any competition last year, and since the summer he has been modified in his deployment, not less regimented in his deep-lying berth, and given the license to strike on goal if and when the opportunity arises.

But Gravenberch has not been shaped into a free-flowing attacking midfielder, with xG (expected goals) metrics showing that the Dutchman is statistically “the best finisher in the league this season”, having struck three strikes past the keeper from just 0.36 xG.

To put that in perspective, Salah has accumulated 3.62 xG this season, and he has four goals to his name. Gravenberch achieved a 1.12 total in last year’s top-flight season, and that yielded not one successful return.

While Liverpool appear to lack physicality and fluency in midfield this season, they have a robust and highly talented crop of players, and as Slot looks to rewrite his side’s tactical coding and escape from the current rut, this is a sign that those in the engine room must be allowed greater offensive freedom at times, thus unburdening the forwards when they are not firing on all cylinders.

Liverpool need to prove that they are worthy champions and ready to return to their former level under Slot’s wing. Too many are looking from outside and criticising Slot’s papier mâché empire, but this is a falsehood, and with an all-embracing midfielder like Gravenberch at the heart of the team, it’s only a matter of time before things click again.

Injury cloud over Jasprit Bumrah ahead of Brisbane Test

India’s tryst with injuries continues as they look to put together a fit XI for the series decider at The Gabba. A day after Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the tour on Monday, and it emerged that Hanuma Vihari (right hamstring injury) and R Ashwin (back tweak) batted through pain to save the Sydney Test, there is an injury cloud over Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the fourth and final Test starting January 15.Bumrah was seen clutching his abdomen repeatedly during Australia’s second innings on the third day’s play in Sydney. He even left the field once for medical attention. However, he bowled 25 overs in all, in a total of 87 overs that India sent down before Australia declared.Bumrah has had the most workload among fast bowlers among both sides, bowling 117.4 overs across the six innings so far in the Tests. Bumrah, who was rested for the T20I leg of the tour to play India’s warm-up fixture in Sydney, has so far featured in each of the three ODIs and the three Tests.Related

While the physio may have to work overtime to get him ready, India’s already inexperienced attack will further be depleted if he is ruled out. If that happens, Mohammed Siraj – all of two Tests old – will be the spearhead, alongside Navdeep Saini and one of the uncapped T Natarajan or Shardul Thakur. India have one other reserve fast bowler in the squad – rookie Kartik Tyagi – who has been used as a net bowler. Tyagi, however, featured in the first warm-up fixture.Meanwhile, if Ashwin too is deemed unfit, India may have to turn to Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner, or allrounder Washington Sundar, who stayed back to assist the side after being part of India’s T20I series win in December. Kuldeep, who was one of India’s finds of their tour in 2018-19, was left out of the five of the six white-ball matches and went wicketless in his only first-class game on tour in Sydney.

We felt like we gained a lot from the IPL, says UAE captain Ahmed Raza

Ahmed Raza, UAE’s captain, is not concerned about his side’s fitness or preparation ahead of their four-match ODI series against Ireland, following a 10-month break from international cricket.UAE’s last game took place in February 2020, a 102-run win against Kuwait in the final of the ACC Western Region T20 competition, but players returned to training in June and have been playing domestic cricket over the past few months.Three players named in the squad for the series were also beneficiaries of the IPL’s change in venue for the postponed 2020 season. Raza and young wristspinner Karthik Meiyappan trained with Royal Challengers Bangalore, while seamer Zahoor Khan spent time with the Mumbai Indians squad.”We were one of the first associate teams to hit the ground running,” Raza said at a virtual press conference. “Having some cricket in the last few months has helped us. We haven’t played any international cricket for a long period, but [the pandemic] is something which is new to all of us. We’re really happy to be together as a squad and are just looking forward to playing some international cricket.”[The IPL] was massive. The experience you get over there training with the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and bowling to them [is great]. We felt like we’d gained a lot when we left the IPL. It’s hard to put into words, but you start feeling different, and you’re different in your approach as well. I hope that whatever we learned in that period, we can showcase in our performances in this series.”UAE go into the series, which sees four games in Abu Dhabi squeezed into a seven-day window from January 8-14, as underdogs: they are six places below Ireland in the ICC’s ODI rankings, and have lost all six of their previous encounters against Ireland in the format.Related

They are also a team in transition. Robin Singh replaced Dougie Brown as director of cricket last year, and has managed to spend time with the group despite being stuck in India for several months due to a lockdown and working as Mumbai Indians’ batting coach during the IPL.Their squad is also still coming to terms with the suspensions of five players over the past 18 months due to corruption charges. As a result, the 17-man squad named on Wednesday has a youthful look to it, with Aryan Lakra, Alishan Sharafu, Kashif Daud and Adithya Shetty all winning their maiden call-ups. Chirag Suri and Khan are both fit after injury concerns.”You want to win every game you play, and this series is no different,” Raza said. “We want to win all the games and win the series. We’re playing in our own backyard and looking at the squad, there’s a good mix of youth and experience. We have to keep an eye on the 2023 World Cup down the line. Looking at the four or five youngsters in the squad, they all playing in the Under-19 World Cup and put in performances.”UAE squad to play Ireland: Ahmed Raza (captain), Chirag Suri, Rohan Mustafa, Muhammad Usman, Muhammad Boota, Zahoor Khan, Junaid Siddique, Waheed Ahmad, Zawar Farid, CP Rizwaan, Aryan Lakra, Karthik Meiyappan, Alishan Sharafu, Basil Hameed, Kashif Daud, Adithya Shetty, Vriitya Aravind

'He blows me away!' – Pedri names Bayern Munich star as the one player he'd sign for Barcelona

Pedri has never shied away from praising talent, but his latest admission makes one thing clear, there’s one player he’d sign for Barcelona above anyone else and that is Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala. The midfielder, currently recovering from injury, openly hailed Musiala as a rare talent who “blows him away,” sparking fresh debate about two of Europe’s most gifted young players.

  • Pedri names Musiala as the only player he'd sign for Barca

Appearing on the YouTube channel , the Barcelona midfielder was asked which single player he would sign if he had full control. He was quick to admit and name the one player on his mind: “A player who blows me away is Musiala. He’s very good.”

The addition of Musiala to the already star-studded squad is exciting, but the reality is far more complicated. Musiala extended his Bayern contract until 2030, and even with a release clause reportedly in place, the figure is far from small with €175 million, dropping to €100m only in 2029.

Pedri was also asked about his favourite player from La Masia, to which he replied: "The one I like the most is Dro, he is very good, he has a lot of quality and it seems that he does not have a hard time doing things."

  • Getty Images Sport

Why Musiala impresses Pedri and why the transfer won't happen

Musiala is one of Europe’s most complete young attackers – versatile, technically sharp, and dangerously productive in the final third. His ability to glide past defenders and contribute goals makes him a standout even among elite talent.

But the admiration isn’t one-sided. Bayern once wanted Pedri. In 2020, shortly after Barca’s infamous 8-2 Champions League defeat, former Barca sporting director Ramon Planes revealed that Bayern requested a video call to push for Pedri’s signing.

Pedri acknowledged the interest but said it was never realistic: “It's true that Bayern were interested in me. But I have an unconditional love for Barca. I’ve always wanted to play here. That's why it was very difficult to imagine going to another club.”

So while Pedri dreams of Musiala in a Barcelona shirt, both players are entrenched pillars of their current clubs, neither likely to move anytime soon.

  • How Pedri and Musiala became elite young stars

Pedri and Musiala emerged almost simultaneously on the European stage, with both players making their senior breakthroughs in 2020. Pedri arrived at Barcelona from Las Palmas and adapted instantly to top-level football, while Musiala progressed rapidly through Bayern's youth system after his move from Chelsea.

Their rise to prominence was equally swift. Pedri’s 2020-21 season turned him into a regular starter across all major competitions, marking him as Barcelona’s most influential young midfielder. Musiala’s breakthrough in 2021-22 confirmed him as Bayern’s next major attacking talent, earning consistent minutes and producing decisive contributions in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Since then, both have become central to the identities of their respective teams. Pedri anchors Barcelona’s midfield with his positional intelligence, composure, and ability to control the rhythm of matches. Musiala provides Bayern with a more explosive dimension, using his dribbling and acceleration to unsettle opponents and create scoring chances.

By 2025, Pedri has accumulated roughly 200 appearances with 28 goals and 23 assists, reflecting his influence as a playmaker and organiser. Musiala, with around 200 appearances, 64 goals and 39 assists, has established himself as a more direct attacking threat with higher scoring output.

Pedri brings control; Musiala brings chaos. One dictates the game, the other breaks it open. Their contrasting styles explain why Pedri speaks so highly of Musiala’s talent.

What lies ahead for Pedri and Musiala

Both stars are currently on recovery paths. Pedri suffered a hamstring tear shortly after El Clasico. Initially ruled out for six weeks, he’s progressing faster than expected and could return sooner, though Barcelona are cautious about avoiding a relapse.

Musiala, meanwhile, is recovering from a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle sustained in July 2025 during the Club World Cup. He has returned to light grass training and is expected to be fit for competitive action by December 2025.

Their importance to their clubs cannot be overstated. Pedri remains the backbone of Barcelona’s midfield while Musiala is Bayern’s most exciting attacking hope.

For now, both remain central figures in their respective projects and any talk of a Barcelona-Musiala union remains nothing more than admiration from one elite talent to another.

January moves loom: £86m duo look set to never play for Chelsea again

Just a matter of weeks ago it looked like Chelsea were in the title race but things have rather unravelled for Enzo Maresca and Co in recent weeks.

The Blues did pick up a point against Arsenal with ten men but results since then have been bleak, losing 3-1 to Leeds United and drawing 0-0 with Bournemouth.

Cole Palmer’s return to fitness has been timely, but according to the manager, he’s still not up to full speed just yet.

The latest Chelsea injury news

Palmer returned from the bench against Bournemouth at the weekend but in a fresh blow to Maresca and Co they have decided that the attacking midfielder will not travel with the squad for the Champions League trip to Atalanta.

That said, no fresh injury has been sustained. The manager has confirmed the forward is simply being rested as part of his recovery.

Palmer had missed a period courtesy of a groin injury and then had to spend an extra week out after breaking a toe at home.

That said, he is now slowly working himself back. Maresca said: “Cole is in part of his process in this moment. He’s not available, he can’t play two games in a row in three days. So we planned that, and it’s just a way to protect him.”

As far as Liam Delap is concerned, the news isn’t ideal there. The striker injured his shoulder against the Cherries and will now miss a period of time.

Commenting on the striker’s situation, the Chelsea boss stated: “Liam, fortunately, there is not any fracture, so that is good news. In terms of how long he will be out, we are not sure at this stage to be honest.”

What Delap's injury means for Chelsea

Well, it certainly means that Joao Pedro is likely to play a lot of minutes over the festive period and there could well be a rare slice of minutes for Marc Guiu who has barely kicked a ball this season after being recalled from his early-season loan spell with Sunderland.

That said, it’s unlikely we’ll see a recall for a certain Raheem Sterling who remains out in the cold alongside centre-back Axel Disasi.

A January exit looms for both players and it would be a surprise if we saw either in a Chelsea shirt again.

Maresca said in his press conference: “In terms of Raheem, once again it’s the same thing I said about Axel, they are Chelsea players. Now also we are in December, January is coming, so anything can happen, obviously.”

Sterling signed at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £47.5m back in the summer of 2022 but has not lived up to expectations, scoring just 19 goals in 81 outings. A season-long loan spell with Arsenal in 2024/25 failed to get his career back on track either.

As for Disasi, he had a loan spell with Aston Villa in the back end of last campaign but has not been seen in Chelsea blue this season. He once cost the club a whopping £38.5m but there is seemingly no way back for him.

Chelsea flop has fast become their biggest liability since Bakayoko

Chelsea and Maresca need to move on from the walking disaster as soon as possible.

Florian Wirtz parks Liverpool struggles to pull the strings in thumping Germany win that seals 2026 World Cup qualification

Germany needed only to avoid defeat to guarantee their 2026 World Cup spot when they faced Slovakia at the Red Bull Arena on Monday night. Following a sub-par campaign, which included a 2-0 loss in Slovakia back in September, Die Mannschaft booked their trip stateside in fine fashion as Julian Nagelsmann's side slaughtered the Falcons, easing to a 6-0 victory.

AFPTell me more

Germany looked to settle early nerves and it was the home side who forged the first half-chance with just three minutes on the clock, with Florian Wirtz's cross headed over Serge Gnabry. Wirtz himself then fired over from inside the Slovakia box, before the dominant hosts found the breakthrough in the 18th minute as in-form Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade headed Germany.

Midway through the first half, and Germany were two goals to the good through Gnabry, latching onto a perfectly weighted Leon Goretzka pass. And the match as a contest was settled 10 minutes before the break as Leroy Sane scored his first and Germany's third – Wirtz played a superb ball over the high Slovakia defensive line for Sane. Wirtz and Sane linked up again for Germany's fourth as the former picked out the latter at the back post in a rampant opening 45 minutes.

The hosts added a fifth midway through the second half. Ridle Baku replaced captain Kimmich in the 64th minute and made no mistake from close range having been teed up by Gnabry to score his second international goal of his career. Dubravka did all he could to keep the scoreline somewhat respectable as he palmed away a low Goretzka drive in the 73rd minute. But he failed to keep out Assan Ouedraogo's deflected effort as the teenager became the second youngest scorer for the Germany national team a little over a minute after his second half introduction.

Having struggled at club level and come in for criticism for a series of sub-par displays following his Liverpool move, Florian Wirtz showcased just why the Reds spent big to secure his services over the summer. Wirtz was a creative force in Leipzig as he tore the Slovakia backline to shreds, linking up superbly with Leroy Sane on the opposite flank. Liverpool fans will be hoping he can transfer this flying Germany form to club level when domestic duties return this weekend.

The big loser

The experienced head in the Slovakia backline, Milan Skriniar looked anything but. The 30-year-old won't want to remember Monday's showing in Leipzig in a hurry. Indeed, Skriniar was at fault for Leroy Sane's second and Germany's fourth in a pitiful performance from the former Inter and PSG man.

Weatherald pushes Ashes case with 183 for Australia A

Opener shared a 209-run stand with Australia A skipper Jason Sangha who also made an unbeaten 121

AAP22-Jul-2025Darwin-born Jake Weatherald sealed a happy homecoming and put his name in the conversation surrounding Australia’s opening batter conundrum for the Ashes with an imperious century for Australia A against Sri Lanka A.Starting day three of the second four-day game on 45, Tasmania’s Weatherald powered to 183 in a magnificent 275-ball innings punctuated by 16 fours and two sixes.Australia A captain Jason Sangha made an unbeaten 121, his third first-class century in his last five innings dating back to the end of the Sheffield Shield season. The pair’s 209-run third-wicket stand, after Kurtis Patterson made 59 in a 134-run second-wicket stand with Weatherald, took Australia A from 76 for 1 on resumption to a strong 379 for 3 by stumps on Tuesday, in reply to Sri Lanka A’s 485 for 6 declared. With the Darwin pitch ideal for batting, the chance of a result looks slim, with the series poised to end 0-0 after game one finished in a stalemate. Most discussion out of the match, then, may centre on Weatherald after the 30-year-old made hay on the Marrara Cricket Ground pitch to score his 13th first-class century.Coming after his 54 in his only innings in game one, the knock was a timely reminder to national selectors as they weigh top-order options for this summer’s home Ashes after a bleak tour of the West Indies for openers. Usman Khawaja has averaged 15.37 in his last eight Test innings and will turn 39 during the Ashes. The 19-year-old Sam Konstas fared even worse when recalled to partner Khawaja in the recent 3-0 Test series romp in the Caribbean, averaging 8.33 and looking well short of the finished article. Nathan McSweeney – dropped after averaging 14.40 through his first three Tests last summer against India – made 94 for Australia A last week to push his case for a possible recall, but failed on Monday in the second match, making 12.Jason Sangha brought up a century from No. 4•Cricket Australia

Into calculations for a top-of-the-order Test debut in the Ashes comes Weatherald, who opened for Australia A and raised his century on Tuesday off 146 deliveries, scoring in virtually every part of the ground. The left-hand batter is coming off the finest summer of his career, in which he topped the Sheffield Shield competition with 905 runs. His three Shield centuries – as with his effort on Tuesday – showed his capacity to push on to make a big hundred, scoring 186 against Queensland, 155 against Victoria, and 145 against New South Wales. On Tuesday, he and Patterson progressed their second-wicket partnership to 134 before Patterson was caught at point for 59 reaching for a wide delivery from paceman Asanka Manoj.Weatherald and Sangha piled on 209 for the third wicket before Weatherald was bowled by offspinner Nuwanidu Fernando.
