The five-year extension, from 2024 to 2028, cost Tata INR 2500 crore (US$301 million approx.)
ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2024The Tata Group has extended its title sponsorship of the IPL for another five years, from 2024 to 2028, for INR 2500 crore (US$301 million approx.), making it the “highest-ever sponsorship amount in the history of the league,” a BCCI statement said. The group were the IPL title sponsors in 2022 and 2023, and are also the title sponsors of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).”The collaboration with TATA Group for the title sponsorship of IPL 2024-28 is a significant milestone in IPL’s journey,” IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal said. “The record-breaking sum of INR 2500 crore by TATA Group is a testament to the immense value and appeal that the IPL holds in the world of sports.”This unprecedented amount not only sets a new benchmark in the history of the league but also reaffirms the IPL’s position as a premier sporting event with global impact. TATA Group’s commitment to cricket and sports is truly commendable, and we look forward to scaling new heights together and providing fans with unparalleled cricketing entertainment.”The Tata Group had replaced Vivo as IPL title sponsors for the last two seasons. The BCCI had temporarily severed ties with Vivo, a Chinese mobile and technology company, following political tensions between India and China in June 2020. Vivo had originally bagged the title sponsorship for 2018 to 2022 for INR 2199 crores (US $341 million approx. at the time), but for the 2020 season, it was replaced by Dream 11, before Vivo returned for the 2021 season.Tata’s bid for the next five years is a 13.7% jump over what Vivo had paid for 2018-22.”This collaboration embodies the spirit of growth, innovation, and a mutual dedication to excellence,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said. “The unprecedented financial commitment reflects the immense scale and global impact of the IPL on the international sports stage.”The 2024 IPL will be played from March 22 and run till the end of May, just before the men’s T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1.

Mayank Agarwal has scored two centuries and a fifty for Karnataka so far in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season•PTI
Mayank Agarwal, the Karnataka captain, was admitted to a private hospital in Agartala on Tuesday after he complained of stomach pain and burning sensation in his throat and mouth after consuming liquid from a bottle that he believed contained drinking water, while onboard an IndiGo flight. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Agarwal was travelling from Agartala to Surat via New Delhi for Karnataka’s fifth-round Ranji Trophy fixture against Railways starting on Friday. Agarwal was deplaned and rushed to hospital after a bout of vomiting inside the aircraft, even as the rest of the Karnataka squad continued their onward travel.ILS Hospitals, where Agarwal was admitted to, later confirmed that he is “clinically stable” and being “clinically monitored”. They said that Agarwal was experiencing some “oral irritation” and “swelling on the lips”. He will be under observation for 24 hours. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is in touch with officials from the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) and the doctors attending to Agarwal. The Karnataka team manager, on Agarwal’s behalf, has also requested the Tripura police to investigate the incident. A written complaint has been signed and issued to K Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police (Tripura West) and a case has been registered under the jurisdiction of the New Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala.”While sitting on a flight, he saw a pouch in front of him and thinking of it as water, drank it,” Kiran told PTI. “He had swelling and ulcers in his mouth. His condition is normal, and his vitals are stable. His manager has made a complaint. We are registering the complaint and will investigate the matter.”Agarwal is set to undergo a few tests following which a decision will be made if he can return home to Bengaluru over the next couple of days for further examination. This all but rules him out of Karnataka’s upcoming Ranji fixture. In a press statement, IndiGo confirmed that the flight had to return to Agartala due to a medical emergency: “IndiGo flight 6E 5177 operating from Agartala to Delhi returned to origin due to a medical emergency onboard. The passenger was offloaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. The aircraft took off again for its destination at 1620h.”Agarwal has so far struck two hundreds and a half-century in the ongoing season. Karnataka are currently placed second in Group C with two wins, a draw and a defeat in four matches. Nikin Jose, the 23-year-old batter, is the designated vice-captain in the squad and is likely to take over the captaincy.
There will be no domestic trophies for Manchester United this season as they have already been knocked out of the FA Cup and the League Cup, whilst being out of contention for the Premier League.
Their top-flight season has been particularly disappointing as they are currently sat in 13th place with just ten wins and 12 losses in the division so far.
Manchester United manager RubenAmorimduring the press conference
The Red Devils have struggled in numerous areas, hence why they are so low down in the table, but goalscoring has been a significant problem for Ruben Amorim’s team, as it was for Erik Ten Hag’s.
Manchester United have only scored 37 goals in 29 matches in the Premier League, which is the second-lowest tally (behind Crystal Palace’s 36) in the top 14 teams in the division.
Despite beating Leicester City 3-0 last time out, goalscoring remains a problem for United moving forward and it has been an issue throughout the squad, not just in the forward department.
Why Manchester United have scored so few goals
The Red Devils have created 42.79 xG worth of chances in the Premier League so far this season, which shows that the overall team have underperformed in front of goal.
Essentially, United have not done enough to make the most of the high-quality opportunities that they have created in matches, and that has cost them throughout the season – as evidenced by their goal output and league position.

As you can see in the table above, four of the five players with the most xG in the Premier League for the Red Devils this term have underperformed, with only Amad Diallo elevating the quality of his chances to score two more goals.
These statistics can either suggest that United are creating chances for the wrong players and should be looking to create more for other stars, or that the board – simply – need to invest in the squad to improve their attacking options in the upcoming summer window.
Manchester United's RasmusHojlundwith assistant head coach Carlos Fernandes during training
Rasmus Hojlund, signed from Atalanta for £72m in the summer of 2023, is the club’s number nine and has only scored three goals in 24 appearances in the top-flight, underperforming against his xG.
Manchester United are, now, reportedly interested in adding another centre-forward to their ranks in the summer, and that could be very bad news for the Danish marksman.
The latest on Man Utd's pursuit of Bundesliga star
According to Football Insider, Manchester United are one of a number of European sides showing an interest in Eintracht Frankfurt number nine Hugo Ekitike.
The report claims that the Red Devils are planning to add a new striker to their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window, and that they are keeping close tabs on the Bundesliga star.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It adds that Frankfurt will demand a ‘huge’ fee for their centre-forward, although it does not state exactly how much, and reveals that Newcastle United and other ‘elite’ European teams are in the race to secure the former Paris Saint-Germain ace’s signature.
This suggests that Manchester United will face plenty of competition as they plot a swoop to land the France U21 international to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Ekitike, who has been compared to the likes of Alexander Isak and Omar Marmoush, rejected a move to Newcastle in 2022, which suggests that the Red Devils may have the edge over the Magpies in this race unless the 22-year-old forward has changed his mind on a switch to Tynecastle since then.
The news that United are plotting a ‘huge’ swoop to sign the Frankfurt centre-forward should, now, come as very bad news to Hojlund, as it could end his chances of nailing down the number nine position as his own moving forward.
Why signing Hugo Ekitike would be bad news for Rasmus Hojlund
The Denmark international has been competing with Joshua Zirkzee for the striker role this season and they have combined for just six goals between them, which shows that neither of them have been the reliable forward that Amorim has needed.
Because Zirkzee has also struggled for goals, Hojlund has had plenty of chances to start games – starting 17 times in the top-flight – but those opportunities could be limited by the arrival of a new marksman.
Ekitike, who scored a hat-trick against England’s U21s during the break, is a centre-forward who has the potential to nail down the position as his own as a regular starter, leaving Hojlund and Zirkzee feeding on scraps as substitutes or as rotation options in cup competitions.
Analyst Ben Mattinson recently claimed that the 22-year-old star “is one of the best strikers out there” and it is hard to argue with that when you look at his form for club and country.
Along with his hat-trick for France’s U21s, Ekitike has produced 19 goals and eight assists in all competitions for Frankfurt this season, including three goals from 2.58 xG in the Europa League.

As you can see in the table above, the French starlet has significantly outperformed Hojlund at league level so far this term, with ten more goals and four more assists.
These statistics suggest that the Ekitike would come in as a huge upgrade on the Danish marksman and that is why his arrival at Old Trafford in the summer transfer window would be very bad news for the former Atalanta man.
It could result in his game time being heavily restricted, as Amorim may want his best number nine to start week-in-week-out, and that could force the £72m signing to consider his long-term future at the club.

Therefore, Hojlund may hope to enjoy a strong end to the Premier League and Europa League season to show the manager and the board that he has what it takes to be the first-choice, because his form to date suggests that the signing of Ekitike is very much needed.

Hanuma Vihari has been named captain of Rest of India for the Irani Cup against Ranji champions Saurashtra beginning October 1 in Rajkot.Vihari, who led South Zone to the Duleep Trophy title in July, has three of his team-mates from that squad – batters Mayank Agarwal, B Sai Sudharsan and fast bowler Vidwath Kaverappa – for company. KS Bharat is likely to be the first-choice wicketkeeper, with Dhruv Jurel as a back-up.Abhimanyu Easwaran, who made 798 runs in the Ranji season, misses out as he’s recovering from typhoid. The other surprise miss is Kerala allrounder Jalaj Saxena, who topped the wickets chart with 50 scalps. With several India A players away with the national team at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, the selectors have rewarded young batters Yash Dhull and Rohan Kunnummal with berths purely on potential, despite them having endured poor Ranji seasons.Dhull managed just 270 runs in 10 innings at the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy while Kunnummal managed 203 runs in nine innings. Vihari himself had a patchy season, scoring 490 runs in 14 innings for Andhra, but the captaincy is possibly a further sign of him still being in the mix as far as back-ups go for the national team.Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 0, 6, 0 and 48 at the season-opening Duleep Trophy, will also potentially have an opportunity to make amends. He’s expected to occupy one of the middle-order berths.Where Sarfaraz bats in the XI could be a sign of the kind of role the senior selectors see him playing in the near future. At Mumbai, he’s been prolific at No. 5 over the past three seasons. Allrounder agrees he’s not in Australia’s best side but won’t seek a rest after the World Cup as he tries to win back his Test spot
Alex Malcolm05-Nov-2023Cameron Green says he has no issues with being in and out of Australia’s World Cup side on form, but will not seek rest after the tournament as he confirmed he will play Sheffield Shield cricket for Western Australia and in the Prime Minister’s XI against Pakistan as he aims to find some red-ball form ahead of the home Test summer.Green made a vital 47 in Australia’s win over England in Ahmedabad on Saturday having been called into the team after Mitchell Marsh travelled home due to the death of his grandfather while Glenn Maxwell was ruled out with concussion. It was just the third game Green has played in the World Cup so far. He was expected to be an integral part of Australia’s best XI but a dip in form leading up to the tournament saw him dropped after the opening match against India. With Marsh returning to India on Sunday and Maxwell set to be clear of his eight-day concussion protocol on Tuesday, Green fully expects to be running the drinks again when Australia face Afghanistan in Mumbai.”I’ve had no issues,” Green said after the win over England. “I think it’s always been through the right selection calls. I absolutely love every single time I play for Australia but we want to put the best team out there on the field and unfortunately, I’m missing out but we’re obviously playing some great cricket.”Green’s omission from the ODI side followed his omission from the Test XI during the Ashes when Marsh pinched his spot after a stunning performance at Headingley when Green was absent due to a hamstring issue.Green’s decline in form across the year has been startling but it has been understandable given the extraordinary travel demands he has experienced. By the end of the World Cup, he will have spent nearly six full months in India, more than any other Australian player, on top of two months in England.Cameron Green aims to push for a Test recall after the World Cup•Getty Images
He was in India non-stop from February 1 until May 27 due to Australia’s Test and ODI tours and the IPL. He then only had two nights at home in Perth before heading to England for the World Test Championship final and the Ashes. He then travelled to South Africa at the start of September and was back in India again on September 18 and will not leave until Australia’s tournament ends in mid-November.He has been rested from Australia’s five-match T20I series against India that begins just four days after the World Cup final on November 19. But he confirmed he would not be resting at home in Perth. He is instead intending to play in WA’s Shield match against Queensland at the Gabba, beginning on November 28. Green also intends to travel to Canberra shortly after that match to play in the four-day game against the touring Pakistan side for the Prime Minister’s XI from December 6 to 9, in a bid to put himself in the selection frame for the first Test in Perth starting on December 14.Green said there has been no discussion with the selectors about his Test place as yet but he was adamant he did not want to rest.”I’m planning on playing the Shield game up in Brisbane and then we’ve got a PM’s XI game … so not too much rest to be fair,” Green said. “Just keep grinding and keep playing cricket.”Despite the obvious concerns over his workload and having spent nearly nine months overseas this year alone, Green was adamant he wanted to continue playing as much as he could to continue to improve.”I think it’s very tough. You want to play as much as you can for Australia and unfortunately, the schedule this year is pretty jam-packed,” Green said. “But I’m absolutely loving playing for my country and I think there’s a bit of a gap maybe next year. It’s been a long 18 months.”Maybe you get a bit complacent when you’re in the team all the time. You’ve got to keep reminding yourself you’re playing for Australia, and you’ve got to perform all the time. Whenever you miss out, you always want to improve and that’s what we love doing. So hopefully there’s a few improvements on the way.”Even if he is not in the first-choice XI, Green is likely to remain with the Australian team throughout the summer for the five home Tests against Pakistan and West Indies as well as three ODIs and three T20Is against West Indies in February. At the end of February Australia head to New Zealand for three T20Is and two Tests just prior to the start of the IPL where he will return for his second season with Mumbai Indians. The IPL runs straight into the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and United States in June before a break may finally come in July of 2024. But Green has no regrets about adding the IPL to his gruelling schedule.”One of the greatest things that happened to me was being part of the IPL and the confidence I gained from that was pretty huge,” Green said. “I definitely felt it going into the Ashes series, how I felt around the group and about my cricket as well.”It’s been a great year so far. It’s been long, challenging. But when I look at where I was at the start of the year to now, I’ve definitely grown as a cricketer and as a person.”

Joining as an emergency replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen last summer just five weeks after announcing his retirement, Szczesny quickly became a dependable No.1 for Hansi Flick's side, consistently stepping up for the team on the biggest stages. The former Arsenal star now faces a major decision after helping Barca to the brink of the La Liga title, having been offered a new two-year deal by the Catalan giants.

Szczesny's comeback from retirement has been remarkable. Signing on a one-year contract, he has gone on to make 29 appearances across competitions, leading Barcelona to Copa del Rey and Super Cup wins, and to within three points of the league title. Barca are eager to retain Szczesny's services despite Ter Stegen nearing full fitness, with Inaki Pena expected to leave the club this summer. Family and lifestyle decisions could influence the veteran's next move, with the goalkeeper joking about a potential return to golf in Marbella.
WHAT WOJCIECH SZCZESNY SAID
Speaking to , Szczesny opened up about the offer and the decision that lies ahead. he said: "I will not hide that I have an offer to continue at Barcelona for two more years. They have already presented it to me, but I have asked for time. I need to decide with my family what is best for all of us. My wife will be the one to make the decision, whether we stay or go to Marbella to play golf.
"I owe it to her to decide this together, and we have not done that yet. She makes most of the decisions, and I am not ashamed of it,” the Barcelona goalkeeper continued. "Honestly, I do not know what will happen, and I say that sincerely. We will decide this month because we need to sort out logistics, such as schools or moving, depending on what we choose. As of now, nothing is certain. We are thinking about it."

Szczesny appears set to make his decision before the end of the month, which will let Barcelona prepare for the summer transfer window. If he stays, he'll most likely serve as a backup or rotation option with Ter Stegen, with Espanyol's Joan Garcia eyed as a potential replacement should the former Poland international choose to retire for a second time.
Wrexham have been handed an audacious transfer boost as Tottenham star Ben Davies refused to commit his future to Spurs. The experienced Wales international, who has been a fixture at Spurs for over a decade, has acknowledged that decisions about his next move may soon be out of his hands.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Davies has been a stalwart at Tottenham since his arrival from Swansea City in 2014. Over the years, his dedication and adaptability have made him a trusted figure under several managerial regimes, from Mauricio Pochettino to Thomas Frank. Now in the twilight of his Spurs tenure, Davies finds himself in the final 11 months of his current deal. Although the club recently exercised their option to extend his contract for another season, the absence of long-term renewal talks suggests the possibility of a summer departure with Wrexham and Leeds United among the possible destinations.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Wrexham, currently on a rapid rise through the English football pyramid, are chasing a fourth consecutive promotion and are just a step away from realising their ultimate dream of playing in the English top flight. Backed by significant investment thanks to Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and global exposure through their Disney+ documentary series, the Welsh club has lofty ambitions and acquiring a Premier League-calibre defender like Davies would be a major coup.
WHAT DAVIES SAID
While on pre-season duty with Spurs in Hong Kong, Davies was asked whether he expected to see out the final year of his contract. The 32-year-old said his current priority was to help Tottenham this season, but remained non-committal when asked directly about seeing through the full term.
"That one is not necessarily under my control. I reported for pre-season and I’m excited to be here," he told
"My focus is now on how I can help this club this year, and if something changes, I’m sure I will be picking up that phone call, but right now I don’t see anything else."
DID YOU KNOW?
Adding to the intrigue at Spurs is the status of Davies’ closest friend at the club, Son Heung-min. The South Korean superstar, who recently completed ten seasons with Tottenham, is also entering the final year of his contract. Like Davies, Son had his deal extended by the club earlier this year, but his long-term future remains in flux.
