A dream for Botman: Newcastle in talks to sign £50m defender

This summer is a crucial one for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United if they are to make a return to Champions League football for the 2024/25 campaign.

The Magpies have built a brilliant foundation with a very competitive squad for the Premier League, but injuries have decimated the squad during the previous season, restricting the club to a seventh-placed finish and missing out on any European football.

Fixture congestion undoubtedly contributed to Newcastle’s bloated injury list, with the lack of squad depth being highlighted at multiple points during the season.

New additions are desperately needed at St James’ Park during the off-season, bolstering Howe’s squad, matching his and the Saudi PIF’s ambitions to become one of the best clubs in world football.

The defensive unit is in need of investment, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both out until the turn of the year following their respective ACL injuries.

Lloyd Kelly has already moved to Tyneside on a free transfer from fellow Premier League side Bournemouth, but he could be joined by one other player who’s caught the eye in recent months.

Newcastle reignite interest in defensive talent

According to A Bola via Sport Witness, Newcastle are back in contact over a move to sign Sporting Lisbon centre-back Ousmane Diomande following previous interest in his signature.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-news-newcastle-premier-league

The Ivorian has excelled in Portugal last campaign, starting on 26 occasions and scoring two goals – a record that has put the Magpies back on red alert.

It’s previously been stated that Diomande has an €80m (£69m) release clause, but the latest update from Portugal confirms that Sporting are potentially open to letting him depart for €60m (£50m) – an absolute bargain for a player of his talent and potential.

Fellow Premier League sides Liverpool and Arsenal have previously been credited with an interest in the Ivorian, but Howe must prioritise a move for the youngster this summer, with the talent having all the qualities to be the perfect partner for Botman upon his return from injury.

Why Diomande could be the perfect partner for Botman

Botman has been an excellent addition to Howe’s side since his £32m move from Lille a couple of years ago, but he’s desperately been lacking a partner at the heart of Newcastle’s defence.

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman.

Whilst he may be an expensive signing, Diomande, who’s previously been dubbed as “one of the most exciting CB prospects” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, he would certainly improve the backline whilst also potentially being a better addition than the Dutchman.

The defender averaged 1.7 tackles per 90 last season, as per FBref, also winning two aerials per game, demonstrating his excellent defensive ability despite his tender age.

Despite his successes off the ball, the 20-year-old has also excelled with the ball at his feet, averaging a whopping 5.2 progressive passes per 90 – a tally that ranks him in the top 8% of centre-backs in Portugal. This would allow the Magpies to transition into a more possession-based side next season should he arrive at St James’ Park.

Diomande is also capable of dribbling the ball out from the back, averaging 0.9 progressive carries per 90, with his excellent ball-playing skills providing a new dimension to Howe’s defence that it’s desperately been lacking.

His ability is there for all to see and Howe's side now desperately need to push in the race for his signature to avoid missing out on one of Europe's top young talents – with the aim of establishing a long-term partnership with Botman.

Whilst Diomande may cost the club nearly double what they paid for Botman, it would be a worthwhile investment, with the Ivorian having the talent to star at the back alongside the 24-year-old for Newcastle for many years to come.

The second coming of Saqib Mahmood, the 'King of Barbados'

The last few months have shown England that Saqib Mahmood is a bowler they can once again call upon and rely on

Cameron Ponsonby11-Nov-2024For a lad from Lancashire, Saqib Mahmood has more connections to Barbados than most. From a professional perspective, this is where he made his Test debut in March 2022. In a high-scoring draw, Mahmood stood out with a performance that seemed to lock him in for years. He was the point-of-difference bowler England had been screaming out for. Where everyone else wanted the new ball, he bowled with the old. When everyone else bowled 82mph, he bowled 87mph. Chris Woakes at home, Saqib Mahmood away. Set your watch to it.But then the injuries came. Consecutive stress fractures meant the best part of two years out and a ‘what-if’ storyline developing for a bowler who was meant to be England’s present and future.Related

Rihanna has to wait, it's family time for Salt and Bethell

And from a personal perspective, he’s spent a lot of time here. He’s great mates with Jofra Archer, the pair often using the island as a training base. Have a bowl, hang out, and go to the spots you don’t know about because you’re not a local. For the ODI series that began in Antigua, Mahmood flew out to Barbados ten days early to prepare. He even enquired about playing a match for Archer’s club side, Wildey CC, to aid his preparation. The ECB approved, but the match was scheduled over two weekends and meant it wasn’t possible.”I hadn’t played 50-over cricket in so long,” says Mahmood, “so I was wondering if I could get a game.”His love of the Caribbean has attracted attention from his team-mates, with Mahmood refusing to reveal the nickname his peers have given him.”I’m not saying it,” he laughs. “Because it’s going to end up as a headline.”Fortunately his team-mates aren’t so discreet.”Sam Curran’s been calling him the King of Barbados,” confirmed Jos Buttler with a smile.Saqib Mahmood ripped out three in a ten-ball set in the Hundred final•ECB/Getty ImagesIt is fitting then, that the King of Barbados’ second coming as an England cricketer comes on the island. Across the two T20Is at the Kensington Oval, he took six wickets. A brutal opening spell on Saturday reduced West Indies to 18 for 3, before an attacking, and occasionally wild, spell of bowling on Sunday netted him 2 for 20.”He feels if the ball’s got some movement, he wants to push it up there,” Buttler said of Mahmood’s three overs which included six wides. “Obviously that’s sometimes harder to control, but he chased those wickets which we asked of him.”It’s hard to gauge where Mahmood sits in the current international set-up. His position as England’s pitch independent bowler has been usurped by Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, with both also being more capable with the bat.But the last few months have shown England that he is a bowler they can once again call upon and rely on. His performance in the Hundred final was one of the competition’s first ‘I was there’ moments. Three wickets in seven deliveries, with his four-ball working-over of Kieron Pollard as good as it gets.

Remarkably, it is over five years since Mahmood first played for England – a T20I against New Zealand in 2019 that preceded two-and-a-half years of being ever-present in squads but an irregular on the field

“You’ve got one of the best players to have ever played the game,” his captain Sam Billings summarised at the time. “And you’ve had him on toast.”Mahmood’s decision to sign a white-ball-only contract with Lancashire raised eyebrows. On the surface, it looked like another domino to fall in the direction of the proliferation of franchise cricket, but this is false. He has himself said that he still aspires to play Test cricket, with a large part of his decision being made in loyalty to Lancashire so they don’t pay him for something his body might not allow him to do.”I think that’s been taken out of context slightly,” Mahmood said of his decision. “If you look at my injury history over the last couple of years, I’ve obviously had two big injuries. And there was a time this year where I said to the guys I didn’t really want to play any red-ball cricket because I was nervous about my body.Saqid Mahmood bowled a blistering spell in the first T20I•Getty Images”In the end, I played a couple of Champo [County Championship] games, but what this contract allows me to do is, if my body isn’t up to playing red-ball, then I don’t feel bad for not playing. But red ball is definitely still on my agenda.”Obviously there was a bit of backlash from Lancashire supporters who were annoyed, but I can assure them that I still want to play red ball.”Remarkably, it is over five years since Mahmood first played for England – a T20I against New Zealand in 2019 that preceded two-and-a-half years of being ever-present in squads but an irregular on the field. In total, he has 27 international appearances across formats, averaging five matches a year.England have long relied on the Bajan population to boost their ranks. First there was Chris Jordan, then there was Archer before Phil Salt and now Jacob Bethell, who are counted within England’s international cricketers. But now, three years after the island voted to become a republic, they can rely on a fifth.

Leeds are brewing the next Kalvin Phillips in exciting 17-year-old starlet

Leeds United have always gained great pride from allowing their homegrown starlets eventual minutes in the first team.

Kalvin Phillips would become a household name in the Premier League after making his Elland Road breakthrough, with Archie Gray also going on to be a £30m purchase by Tottenham Hotspur after he exploded into life in the senior picture at the Whites.

With Daniel Farke also recently stating that the development of youth is one of the “cornerstones” of the club’s ongoing philosophy, it wouldn’t be a great shock to see a new Phillips or Gray emerge in the very near future.

Amazingly, another member of the Gray family in Harry Gray, is already making considerable strides to break into the men’s set-up.

Harry Gray's rise at Leeds

With the young pair also having Leeds royalty deeply ingrained into their family tree in the form of great uncle Eddie Gray, it appears as if Elland Road is just woven into their DNA.

Before anyone gets too carried away, the 16-year-old striker has only made one fleeting cameo in Farke’s first-team to date, but his future does look very rosy in West Yorkshire, with his early goalscoring form in the Premier League 2 this season only adding to his immense hype.

From just four games this campaign in all competitions, Gray has helped himself to a blistering four strikes, with his weighty goal tally for both the U18s and U21s now standing at a very impressive 15 goals from 22 outings.

Branded the “real deal” by analyst Ben Mattinson, it does only feel like a matter of time now before the teenage sensation is leading the line for Farke’s men, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin potentially pushed all the way for a starting spot very soon by the England U17 international.

However, he isn’t the only hotly-tipped youngster at this moment in time in the U21 picture.

Leeds could even be brewing their next Phillips when looking at this very promising midfield talent who just signed his first-ever professional contract at his boyhood employers.

Leeds' next Phillips

While his career path has hit many a bump since exiting Leeds in 2022, with just 31 Manchester City appearances coming his way in three years, it goes without saying that he is the standard that many of the new rising crop at Thorp Arch still try to hit.

Indeed, under Marcelo Bielsa’s transformative guidance, Phillips would turn into an extremely hot midfield commodity, with a senior Three Lions call-up even falling into the 29-year-old’s lap, before moving on to the Etihad for a substantial £40m.

While Ollie Pickles is way off hitting those heights at the moment, he will hope – sometime down the line – that he can experience these same amazing highs, having just penned his first-ever professional contract at Elland Road that runs until 2028.

The 17-year-old hotshot warranted that deal coming into play, too, with Pickles even donning the captain’s armband for the U21s last time out to show off similar leadership skills to those of Phillips in the main team.

The similarities don’t just end there, however, with Pickles also showing off a similar eye for a goal and an assist to that of the former Bielsa favourite, with a standout five-goal contributions tallied up from the central midfield position from just ten outings.

Arguably, his added adaptability to slot into a right-wing or left-wing spot if needed also stands him in good stead to replicate Gray’s sharp rise, with the Spurs number 14’s malleable nature turning him into a constant regular under Farke.

Still, with previous interest in his services coming from the likes of Gray’s new employers, it could be that Pickles goes on to be another major sale for Leeds in the midfield department, like Phillips.

Before anything more concrete pops up over Pickles leaving, however, the teenager will have to prove himself in the senior side, with chances potentially handed to him in the near future.

Frank must drop "painful" £25m Spurs star who's holding Xavi Simons back

Last season, Tottenham Hotspur were made to bemoan defensive injuries. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven missed extensive periods through injury. As did full-back Destiny Udogie.

Is it any great surprise, therefore, that Ange Postecoglou’s backline looked such a mess? Perhaps not, but the Aussie was still stubborn enough to refuse change.

Thomas Frank certainly seems more flexible with his style of football but one of the first things he has corrected is that leaky backline.

Only three teams, Arsenal (3), Manchester City (6) and Sunderland (6), have shipped fewer goals than Spurs (7) in the top-flight this term.

Yet, are things beginning to unravel in similar circumstances to Ange? Like the club’s former boss, Frank has now suffered his first big injury blow at the back.

Romero limped off during the warm-up of their game with Aston Villa and after initially being selected, was not fit enough to start. Without their captain, the Lilywhites suffered a 2-1 defeat.

Frank won’t fret quite yet, but he must find a way to get more of a tune out of his attack. Big-money summer signing Xavi Simons will play a big part in that.

Why Spurs need to see improvement from Xavi Simons

Even before James Maddison suffered a terrible ACL injury during pre-season, Frank and Co had made efforts to bring Nottingham Forest talisman Morgan Gibbs-White to north London.

We all know how that saga ended but Spurs’ pursuit of a new dynamic number 10 seemed cursed at one point.

It looked for all the world as though they were set to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. A deal was agreed and he was allegedly on his way to Spurs. Instead, a last-minute U-turn saw him head to boyhood club Arsenal. The solution was Simons.

The Dutchman had been courted by Chelsea but it was the Blues’ London rivals who eventually concluded a deal, snapping him up for £52m, a move that made him Spurs’ fifth-most expensive signing of all time.

This was an exciting acquisition. After all, he did score 11 goals and register eight assists for RB Leipzig in Germany last season.

Sadly, we’re yet to see the best of him in white. He is yet to complete a full 90 minutes in the Premier League and his only goal involvement, an assist against West Ham, came on his English top-flight debut. The Netherlands maestro has not scored or assisted since then.

For such a big-money signing, Frank needs to see more from him but it’s not as though he isn’t trying. Perhaps there’s a simple solution to all of this; Spurs need better players in their forward line.

How Spurs can get more out of Xavi Simons

How supporters must long for the days of Harry Kane and a prime Heung-min Son.

The duo aren’t showing any signs of slowing down away from Spurs with Kane simply in the form of his life this campaign, netting 19 times in 11 games for Bayern Munich.

As far as Son is concerned, he’s been lighting up MLS with his displays for LA FC. The South Korean has nine goals and three assists in his first ten outings for the club.

So, to see where the Spurs forward line is now will no doubt make a few fans hide behind the sofa. Combine the loss of Son with injuries to Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski and you have a real patched-together front line.

Dominik Solanke has played just 31 minutes of league football due to injury in 2025/26 while Richarlison has only beaten the goalkeeper once in his last seven Premier League matches.

As for the French youngster, Wilson Odobert, he is yet to score at all across ten games in all competitions.

With such a glut of misfiring players, is it any surprise that Simons has endured a difficult beginning at Spurs?

A look at the numbers tells us that the Dutch midfielder is struggling without a fluid forward line. Worryingly, he’s playing fewer passes per 90 minutes than he did last season at Leipzig. That ultimately means he’s creating fewer goalscoring opportunities for his teammates.

He needs the players in front of him to make better runs and there is no better example of that than the aforementioned Odobert.

The former Burnley man, signed for £25m, is still a particularly raw prospect. He’s exciting and fleet-footed but he needs to be doing more to help Simons out.

The big-money summer arrival traditionally operates in the pockets of space on the left-hand side and it’s on the left flank where Odobert tends to operate. The clip below demonstrates precisely what we’re talking about.

Mathys Tel has the ball on the edge of the box and all he needs is for a few defenders to be dragged away by an overlapping run from Odobert to potentially feed Simons in acres of space.

What does the Frenchman do? He surges right into the area where Tel is aiming for, reducing the space and cutting out a chance to get a shot or pass away.

Had Odobert made an overlapping run, he’d have created more room for Spurs’ number 7 and potentially even received the ball himself. As Jamie O’Hara said after the game, he and Tel can be “painful” to watch.

The 20-year-old is a marmite figure. He did a fair bit right against Aston Villa, completing four of his five dribbles but he needs better end product.

He missed an OPTA-defined big chance on Sunday and only completed one key pass. If Odobert can marry his trickery with the ability to make better runs and make himself an option for Simons then things will improve.

Until then, however, it would be better if the Netherlands star operated from the left flank instead or someone like Brennan Johnson operated there.
