Tom Lace shows promise on debut after Kent's lower order fill their boots

Matt Henry’s career-best helped Kent pile up 561 before Derbyshire’s top order provided a solid base in reply

ScorecardHaving been limited to just 11 days of first-class cricket on this ground all summer, Derbyshire members will be grateful for this pitch on one level, even if the chances of a home win are fairly remote. At least, barring a collapse that would be spectacular even by Derbyshire standards, there is a better than even chance of cricket at the weekend. What’s more, there are worse places to be on a sunny September Saturday than on this ground. It has been a much maligned venue over the years, in common with its neighbour down the road in Leicester, but while there is no pretending it is the Tunbridge Wells of the East Midlands, the air of musty decline that used to hang around the place is a thing of the past.Kent are enjoying being here for sure. For the first time this season, they picked up a full complement of batting bonus points, which may yet be invaluable as they seek to close the gap on the top two in what remains of the season. From 365 for 6 overnight, they batted on until all out for 561, adding almost 200 runs at more than five an over. They passed the 400 mark in the 103rd over, only a few deliveries into a partnership between Matt Henry and Grant Stewart that added 119 for the eighth wicket in 20 overs.Henry, whose return to the Kent side has been anticipated largely for his bowling, which yielded 49 wickets in six Championship matches in his first stint with the county earlier in the season, revealed that he can be a pretty useful asset with the bat when everything falls into place. Swinging his arms enthusiastically at anything there to be hit, turning only his fifth first-class fifty into a career-best 81.There were four sixes to rouse spectators, one of which, off Matt Critchley’s legspin, sailed high over the pavilion at deep midwicket, to be followed immediately by another, slightly squarer, into the adjoining car park. He looked good for a maiden hundred, even after Stewart’s departure for a somewhat more measured and rather attractive 85, left him with only one more partner, until another attempt to threaten the pavilion glass off Tony Palladino instead flew off a thick edge to cover. The willing workhorse Palladino dismissed Adam Riley to end the innings with two wickets in two balls and complete the 15th five-for of his first-class career. Remarkably, five of these have been against Kent, including his career-best 7 for 53 on this ground in August 2012. Only this one, though, had cost him more than 100 runs.It left Derbyshire needing to score 412 merely to avoid the follow-on, a total they have reached only once this season. Kent’s ambition was to bat only once and it still might be realised but Derbyshire are at least in a position from which it ought not to.The unblooded Middlesex youngster, Tom Lace, whose arrival on loan as a replacement for Nottinghamshire-bound Ben Slater had some regulars chuntering about home-grown players not being given a chance, more than justified his selection with an eye-catching first-class debut. The 20-year-old, a natural opener with a sound, classical technique – highly thought of by his home county, where he has played since he was 10 – was off the mark to his first ball from Henry and settled any nerves with a nice cut for four in Harry Podmore’s opening over at the other end. He picked up half a dozen more boundaries, mainly off-drives or flicks off the legs, before Ivan Thomas nipped one back to have him leg before for a very promising 40.Thomas consistently asked the most questions among the Kent bowlers, claiming the only other Derbyshire wicket to fall by bowling Billy Godleman for 71. Henry bowled quite full, looking for swing, and left himself open to be driven as a consequence. There was enough in the pitch late in the day for Riley to bowl unchanged for the last hour, joined by Denly’s legspin at the end, but Wayne Madsen and Alex Hughes have so far emerged unscathed.

Rob Manfred Defends Dodgers Amid MLB Fan Criticism Over Spending Spree

Just one offseason after stunning the sports world by signing Shohei Ohtani to a then-North American sports record, $700 million contract, the Los Angeles Dodgers followed it up by spending more than $450 million in guaranteed money this offseason to upgrade a roster that won the 2024 World Series with a class of free agency imports headlined by two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.

The Dodgers have more than $2 billion worth of guaranteed money tied up in just seven players on its roster, an unprecedented half of which the franchise has decided to dole out in deferred payments through 2046. The Dodgers' wealth—they possess MLB's highest payroll by a wide margin—and strategy of deferred payments has allowed the club to stockpile talent, while also irking the fanbases of smaller market teams.

Speaking to reporters at MLB's spring training media day in Phoenix, Ariz., on Tuesday, Manfred addressed such concerns while defending Los Angeles's spending.

"The Dodgers have gone out and done everything possible, always within the rules…to put the best possible team on the field," Manfred said. "I think that's a great thing. That type of competitive spirit is what people want to see."

And yet, perhaps the most jarring representation of baseball's haves and have-nots is the fact that the Dodgers' $1 billion in deferred payments amounts to more money than the is worth. No other team has more than $50 million deferred. Opposing fanbases wonder how any team can compete with Los Angeles, whom they feel is exploiting a broken system.

"It’s clear we have fans in some markets that are concerned about the ability of the team in their market to compete with the financial resources of the Dodgers," Manfred continued. "If we’ve been consistent on one point, we try to listen to our fans on topics like this. And I have heard people, believe me."

In the eyes of Manfred, MLB's commissioner since 2014, the problem is bigger than the Dodgers.

"If I’m going to be critical of something, it’s not going to be the Dodgers," he said, via Jack Harris of . "It's going to be the system."

How Royal Challengers and UP Warriorz can qualify for the playoffs

Also, do Gujarat Giants still have a realistic chance?

S Rajesh19-Mar-20237:14

Devine scores the best knock of WPL and Mumbai finally get beaten

How can Royal Challengers overcome their net-run-rate deficit and take third spot?
Currently, Royal Challengers have an NRR of -1.044 after seven games and Gujarat Giants have -2.511 after the same number of games, while UP Warriorz have -0.117 after six. Given that Warriorz already have six points, Royal Challengers only have a chance if they win their last game and move to six, and if Warriorz lose their last two, against Giants and Delhi Capitals. If the three results pan out in that fashion, then three teams will be level on six points, bringing net run rates into play. For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume a 40-run margin in each of those three games, with the winning team scoring 160. Then, the NRRs will look like this: Warriorz -0.612, Royal Challengers -0.628, and Giants -1.893.That means Royal Challengers will need a slightly bigger margin in one of those games – a win by 43 runs for example, instead of 40 – to go past Warriorz’s NRR.Thus, Royal Challengers still have a shot at qualification, but they need several things to go their way, both in terms of results and their margins.Gujarat Giants’ NRR is -2.511•BCCIDo Gujarat Giants have a realistic chance?
Giants are so far behind on run rate that they might as well start planning for next year. Even if they score 160 and beat Warriorz by 100 runs, they will still need Warriorz to lose to Capitals by 112 runs to move ahead of them on NRR. Apart from these improbable results, they’ll also need Royal Challengers to lose their last game to Mumbai. What do UP Warriorz need to do to qualify?
Warriorz will be through if they win one of their last two games. They might even make it with two defeats, if they lose by narrow margins (as mentioned above).Do Delhi Capitals have a chance of taking the top spot away from Mumbai?
If Capitals beat Mumbai on Monday, then both teams will be level on 10 points with their last game coming up on Tuesday: Mumbai against Royal Challengers and Capitals against Warriorz. Thus, Capitals have a shot at the top spot, though their NRR is poorer (1.431 compared to 2.670 for Mumbai). However, if Capitals lose on Monday, then Mumbai Indians will be assured of the top spot.

Newcastle make offer for gem who’s more dominant in the air than Dan Burn

Newcastle United have now tabled an offer to sign a new talented defender in January, according to a fresh report, as they look to beat Manchester City to his signature.

Newcastle looking for a new centre-back

It is no secret that Eddie Howe is keen to add another centre-back to his ranks, with the club trying and failing to land Marc Guehi over the summer transfer window.

They could yet return for the Crystal Palace defender, but there is now believed to be more interest in his services, which could make any potential move to Tyneside difficult.

Currently 12th in the Premier League, other sides are in a better position to offer the potential of European football next season, with both Liverpool and Chelsea thought to be weighing up a move for the England international.

This could force Howe’s side to pivot on their transfer targets, and they may instead look for a younger, more promising talent who would command a lesser fee than Guehi, allowing them to spend in other areas of the squad.

Abdukodir Khusanov is one player that the Magpies are considering, while they are believed to hold a long term interest in Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande.

Howe is keen to add fresh faces to his side in January after he admitted that his squad needed freshness: “I think freshness is important in a squad – I won’t sit here and deny that. Sometimes, the same squad can produce a staleness and a negative product.”

Despite this, it is unclear the budget that the Magpies will have to use in the winter window, which could force them to sign some younger gems rather than established stars. Now, they may have found a potential bargain.

Newcastle make offer to sign young defender

That is according to SportItalia [Via Sport Witness], who report that Eddie Howe’s side have tabled an offer to sign Juma Bah, currently playing in Spain with Real Vallodolid.

The 18 year-old defender is on loan from Sierra Leone side AIK Freetong, and has featured 10 times for his temporary club this season, drawing plenty of admiring glances and being labelled “quality” by his side’s official X account.

Standing at 6 foot 5 inches tall, he is unsurprisingly dominant in the air, winning more aerial duels than Newcastle’s Dan Burn and winning a higher percentage of them too.

Manchester City are thought to be among his admirers, but Newcastle have looked to beat Pep Guardiola’s side to the punch. According to the report, they have already tabled a €10m bid to sign the defender in the January transfer window.

Any deal would involve Vallodolid having to buy Bah first, before then selling him on at what would likely be a substantial profit. However, Newcastle’s offer was not deemed substantial enough and Vallodolid “turned it down” and are “demanding more money” to let him leave.

Despite this, they are open to letting him leave in January, which could provide an opportunity for any interested party to steal a march on rival interest and land him at a potential bargain fee.

Thunder win low-scoring thriller, will face Heat in Eliminator

Sydney Thunder survived a wobbly chase to secure a BBL finals berth after a tense three-wicket victory over Melbourne Stars at the MCG.The finals positioning came down to the last match of this riveting regular season with Thunder needing a win to leapfrog Hobart Hurricanes, who had pushed into the top five after a remarkable two-run victory over Brisbane Heat earlier in the day.Eerily similar to that game in Launceston, it went down to the wire after a nervy Thunder almost botched their chase of 120.But Thunder, who have been up and down all season, did enough in a see-saw of a contest to claim fourth place and will host an elimination final on Friday against fifth-placed Heat.It ended another underachieving season for Stars, who finished bottom of the ladder with just three wins.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Thunder stumble over the line

Chasing a low target, Thunder had early wobbles with David Warner’s run of low scores continuing after being undone by extra bounce from quick Luke Wood.Warner lasted just three deliveries and has made just 63 runs from five innings since his long-awaited return to the BBL. He is likely to have one more chance to better those returns at elimination final.Thunder were boosted by the return of batter Jason Sangha, who was out for five weeks due to a broken collarbone. But Sangha couldn’t get going and was stumped off a sharp delivery from spinner Adam Zampa.Thunder kept losing wickets and appeared to be headed for the same fate of Heat earlier in the day. But a hard-hitting 28 off 18 balls from Daniel Sams and composed batting from skipper Chris Green and Nathan McAndrew got Thunder over the line and into the finals.

Zampa gives it his all

Zampa has had a rough season after taking the Stars’ captaincy reins from injured Glenn Maxwell. But he remains their talisman and did his very best to thwart Thunder’s finals hopes. He enjoyed a spinning MCG surface and turned the match by outfoxing Alex Ross and Sams to leave the contest in the balance. It wasn’t a flawless effort with Zampa dropping a sitter to reprieve Green on 1 in what proved a costly missed chance. The Stars did what they could to fight all the way to the finish and perhaps in that respect they made it a reasonable send off for coach David Hussey.Adam Zampa celebrates dismissing Jason Sangha with Marcus Stoinis and Joe Clarke•Getty Images

Qadir shines, Sandhu injured

Thunder vindicated Green’s decision to bowl after a disciplined performance from the attack. They bowled well in partnerships from the get go to shackle last-placed Stars, who appeared to be going through the motions in what was a dead rubber for them.Legspinner Usman Qadir, the son of legendary Pakistan spinner Abdul Qadir, stole the show with a three-wicket haul. He bamboozled Stars’ struggling batters with flighted deliveries and combined well with Green, who was typically miserly to finish with 2 for 19 off four overs. Qadir has proven a reliable part of Thunder’s attack after being drafted into the squad for injured spinner Tanveer Sangha. The team’s hierarchy will be well pleased with the performance of the attack after seamer Gurinder Sandhu limped off the ground with a suspected calf injury having bowled two overs. He appears in major doubt for Friday’s final.

Stoinis’ struggles caps tough season

Marcus Stoinis’ season might have been doomed from the start when he fell first ball in the opening game against Thunder shortly after contracting Covid-19. He made just 14 runs in his next three innings before finally rediscovering his belligerent best with a couple of powerful half-centuries. But a hamstring injury derailed his momentum and Stars’ season was basically shot when he returned.Stoinis was hoping to at least end things on a high and find some form before he heads to the UAE’s ILT20. He targeted Qadir in the sixth over and clobbered a six down the ground but couldn’t repeat the dose later in the over to hole out. It summed up a disappointing season for Stoinis, where nothing seemingly went right and he finished with just 190 runs at 23.75 from nine matches.

PCB invites department teams to return to domestic cricket

Pakistan’s first-class cricket is set to return to a model featuring both regions and departments

Umar Farooq24-Jan-2023

Department teams were removed from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy following the Imran Khan-led revamp of domestic cricket•PCB

The Pakistan Cricket Board has invited the country’s private and government departments besides three military institutes to be part of the domestic circuit. The PCB has initiated a restructuring of domestic cricket, and a return to the 16-team hybrid first-class model featuring both regions and departments. The PCB has already abolished the previous six-team model after the completion of the 2022-23 season in the first week of January.”The Pakistan Cricket Board has formally written to 27 leading departments, seeking their interest in participating in the PCB Domestic Cricket Season 2023-24, which will start in August,” the PCB confirmed through a press release. “In the letters, the PCB has not only invited the departments to confirm their participation in the upcoming season at their earliest convenience [which] can help them prepare the season’s calendar but has also encouraged them to set up strong cricket sides, assuring them maximum coverage and publicity through the traditional and new media.”Related

Umar Gul: We need departmental cricket back in Pakistan

'There's been famine for the last four years' – Najam Sethi out to revive domestic cricket in Pakistan

In the new structure, eight regional teams and eight department teams will play in the premier first-class tournament, the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Every season, the regional and department teams finishing bottom get relegated and two toppers (one region and one department) from the Grade 2 tournament will be promoted. Although the 2023-24 season effectively starts in August, the Pakistan government had given the new head of the PCB, Najam Sethi, 120 days (starting from December 21, 2022) to reset the set-up and go back to the 2014 constitution.Racing against time, the PCB management committee is making every effort to return to the previous model, reviving the 97 districts that make up the 16 regions. There are around 3200 clubs already functioning across the country and are the major feeders of players into the regional system. The Pakistan government recently removed Ramiz Raja and his Board by revoking the 2019 constitution the PCB was operating under and brought back Najam Sethi to head the management committee, giving it full executive powers to work on reviving the constitution of 2014. Aside from the changes in the board and its structure, that constitution will also bring back department sides into the domestic circuit – they had been removed in 2019 after former Pakistan captain Imran Khan became the Prime Minister of the country (the PM automatically becomes the PCB’s patron).Umar Gul and Misbah-ul-Haq were among prominent voices calling for department cricket to be reinstated•Getty Images

Even though the PCB has reached out to the departments, it’s not clear if the departments are willing to revive their teams in the current economic climate. There might not be much appetite for such organisations to hire a squad of cricketers. A number of department sides had shut down their sporting operations even before Imran’s changes, with Habib Bank Limited (HBL) and United Bank Limited (UBL) among the prominent ones to do so.PM Shahbaz Sharif, the PCB’s current patron-in-chief, had already issued a directive in October last year to all 18 government departments/institutes to restore the governance of their sports structure in Pakistan and restart the financing of sports departments. The pick-up on that has been slow – ESPNcricinfo understands that Ramiz Raja as chairman had written to private banks to ask about reviving their teams but they had shown little interest. Various government departments are dependent on government budgets and haven’t allocated a budget since the PM’s notification.Several government departments that function autonomously – such as State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Sui National Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV), Sui Southern Gas (SSG), Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) – can easily allocate funds though it’s unclear if they see it as a priority. The PCB’s letter is an attempt to know their intentions. It is understood that not all 27 departments will be willing to return but the PCB requires at least 16 in the system under its proposed domestic structure. PSL franchise Lahore Qalandars are among the private teams willing to launch a team in the Grade 2 set-up to complement their player hunt program.According to the 2014 constitution, the Board of Governors (BoG) will have ten members including four regional representatives (the top four teams from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy), four representatives of service organisations (the top four department teams) and two members to be nominated according to the patron’s discretion. To form a Board the PCB also needs to have an active domestic circuit. The abolition of departments in 2019 led to resentment in the cricketing community of Pakistan. A group of former board members and cricketers including Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez and Umar Gul have been urging the government to revert to the previous domestic structure that included departmental teams such as Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), SNGPL and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). The model introduced on the insistence of Imran led to a large number of players losing their livelihoods from their employment with departments.
